One-hit wonder of the decade: Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day”

“One-Hit Wonder.” Not exactly the label most musicians strive for, is it? While every recording artist wants that signature smash hit, nobody wants to be known for one song only. But Daniel Powter, whose ubiquitous “Bad Day” became the soundtrack for every American Idol contestant who was sent packing, has been named “One-Hit Wonder of the Decade” by Billboard. That puts poor Daniel right up there with the Number 1 One-Hit Wonder of the 1980s: Dexy’s Midnight Runners for “Come on Eileen.” That’s gotta hurt!

As far as one-hit wonders go, Daniel Powter is king of them all – for this decade, at least.

Powter, whose hit “Bad Day” reigned on top of the Billboard pop charts for five weeks in 2006, was named as the decade’s top one-hit wonder by Billboard.

The magazine describes one-hit wonders as acts whose second hit did not reach the top 25; they only included acts from 2000 to 2007, since someone from last year might just be taking a break.

No. 2 on their list is the Terror Squad for “Lean Back”; No. 3 is Crazy Town with “Butterfly”; No. 4 is MIMS with “This Is Why I’m Hot”; and No. 5 is D4L – remember them? – with “Laffy Taffy.”

Wow, I don’t even remember that last one. This is what happens when you stop listening to pop radio. But here’s the good news: Daniel Powter wrote “Bad Day” himself, so every time the song is played on the radio, or when it was played ad nauseum on “American Idol,” or covered by Alvin and the Chipmunks, Danny boy got paid. Considering the song went gold in the U.S. and platinum in several other countries, Powter is laughing all the way to the bank.

Here’s my favorite take on the song:

I’m really glad it’s been lucrative for him. I like the song and I even thought the rest of the CD was pretty interesting. Even if he only have one hit, that’s closer to the dream than many singer/songwriter’s out there.

    Good for you Powter!

I remember when that song first came out. The song resonated so much with everyone because we could all relate to it. Then, sadly like every other decent song, it was PLAYED TO DEATH and then I begun to loathe it. LOL!

Good for Daniel that the song is so lucrative for him.

The Alvin & The Chipmunks version of this song is so adorable. (Yes, I watched the movie, don’t you judge me!)

That video is hilarious; I’ve wanted to do every single one of those things at some point in my office (especially destroying the phone of the annoying co-worker who spends all day on the phone and won’t STFU!)

Is it sad that I know, and listen to, D4L songs other than Laffy Taffy?

And Bad Day just cannot compare to Come on Eileen, I cannot count the number of times my sister and I have belted out that song on long car trips!

What is the 90’s one hit wonder? Ice, Ice Baby? The Macarena? Baby Got Back?! Soooo many options

Hint to all wanne be hit writers (even if for just one): Write a song that can easily fit a common scenario at sporting events. No matter what kind of sport in what type of arena, this song will be played, I guarantee you, as soon as a penalty comes down.

Lollabella, I agree – it wasn’t a bad song, but got SOOOOO overplayed I now can’t stand it.

you know at least it’s better to be a one hit wonder than a on hit wonder. at least you had one hit song

  7. LolaBella says:

@lucy2: Seriously the Alvin & The Chipmunks version totally made me like the song all over again. I dare you to click the link below and not smile! LOL!

on this side of the pond Dexy’s were at least a three-hit wonder :p

I don’t know why people make fun of one hit wonders. At least they had a hit. Most people can’t even get a record deal much less have a hit. I loved “Butterfly”. Don’t even remember “This Is Why I’m Hot”.

So this is the guy who sings this. I flipping hate this song.

  12. LolaBella says:

This song is up there with ‘You’re Beautiful’ by James Blunt. They killed it on the radio and then every single wedding I went to the groom dedicated it to the bride! I just wanted to poke my ear out with a Phillips head at one point; it was so overplayed!

James redeemed himself in my eyes, however, when he sung a parody of the song called ‘My Triangle’ on Sesame Street.

Dan Powter used to be in my high school, used to swim in his pool. I wish I could be happier for him but he was a mean jerk in high school. I do hope he succeeds. He used to be part of a high school group called Fun Guys as the rumour was they used to dabble in shrooms.

I hate this song. It MAKES me have a bad day when i hear it. hate it hate it hate it! BOOOOOO

  15. boosielver says:

  16. canadianchick says:

,You’re right James he is Santino’s twin, just needs to hit on Nicky Hilton and the Santino vibe is complete.

  17. Jazz says:
