Just for the record, I’m not hating on Rachel Weisz. I love Rachel. I think she’s amazingly talented and cool, and I wish she would make more movies. Also, for the record, I’m not hating on pale girls. Not everyone has to be tan. Not everyone has to be fake-bake orange. I like that Rachel is a pale girl, and proud of her pale skin. That being said, pale girls do have to be hyper-aware of what colors and makeup styles wash them out to the point of looking like a walking corpse. Just for equal opportunity slamming – I have dark, olive skin, and I have to avoid lots of greens, yellows and oranges because those colors make me look like I have jaundice. All’s fair.
So Rachel chose poorly for her makeup and her dress. The makeup would have been easily repaired had Rachel avoided the bright red lipstick that only accentuates her pale skin, making her look washed out. As for the dress… well, this thing is a mess. Bad cut, bad style, bad color (for Rachel), bad length, bad fit, you get the idea. Just a crappy choice. Rachel’s hair looks pretty, though. Shiny and healthy. My hair is the same length, and I really like the length.
Despite Rachel’s deathly visage at the premiere, I’m still looking forward to The Lovely Bones. I was thrilled when Rachel was cast – she’s absolutely perfect for the mother of the murdered girl. Unfortunately, the film keeps getting bad reviews. If you’re familiar with the book, you know that nothing about the story really says “suspense thriller/crime drama”. But that’s what they’ve made the film into – which kind of sucks. Hopefully, beyond that plot problem, the rest of the film might be good. Fingers crossed.
Once again, here’s the trailer for The Lovely Bones:

Ha ha. I have exactly the same colouring as her – eye colour and skin colour, but I’m blonde. I have to be VERY careful to avoid certain make-up and clothing choices. Yellows and oranges are OUT. So is eye make-up in pink/purple. Tried pink eyeshadow once. Looked like a hungover zombie.
She’s incredibly beautiful so I don’t feel too bad she got it a bit wrong this time. 🙂
I think she looks gorgeous here, as usual. I don’t get what is wrong about this look. Rachel is a beauty and a great actress. I also really like her husband, Darren Aronofsky, who’s a fantastic director.
I’m proud to be as pale as she is. But pale skin is very high maintenance, because every vein, scar and spot is visible. I also tan very easily and I live in a sunny country, so, to keep my skin snow white, I try to stay away from the sun and I use sunscreen (SPF 50) the whole day. A tan makes me look Lindsay Lohan dirty. So, not a good look. 🙂
I disagree with Kaiser, I think she looks gorgeous here but I may be a bit biased, cause I have a very similar colouring to hers. And her eyelashes (I don’t care, real or not) are to die for!
I don’t believe I’m going go see this film. I loved the book and reread it a few times and got my man to read it also, but, for some reason, I just cant get excited by the trailer. It looks crappy. And I cant stand the way they make Susie’s heaven look.
@hatsumomo, I agree with susie’s heaven, but this will have to be better than that crapfest they called Elle Enchanted-way to ruin a classic.
I’m going to try this one.
I am the same too so I always avoid really bright colors. I also never wear red lipstick, I tend to look like a Twilight style vampire lol. I still think Rachel Weisz is just beautiful and I loved her in The Mummy movies.
Well Kaiser, I’m with ya. She is usually strikingly pretty, but I think she looks like death in these pictures. I think the problem is the foundation, though. You can get cover up for pale skin that isn’t actually grey…
I have the same coloring, hair and all and I can’t tan, I buuurn.
That dress is too short, but if it were a bit longer, maybe hit her just above the knee, it might be okay. Well, in a different color. Maybe a pretty coral.
No one besides Christina Aguilera looks good in that lipstick. Anne Hathaway keeps trying and she looks just as hard and ghastly. It’s just the wrong shade of red for us pale chicks.
She’s stunning, ‘though the dress looks like a napkin from a chinese restaurant.
Red lipstick is good on pale skin, but the skin must be perfect, no freckles or shadows under the eyes, and of course bright white teeth.
I have similar colouring – dark hair, and actually paler than this. I suspect she’s done what I have so many many times – looked in the bathroom mirror and thought, “Wow, how dramatic” and not realised that, in the real world “dramatic” equals “1920s silent movie drag artiste”.
I applaud her for eschewing the fake tan but with this colouring you don’t mess about – you can either do strong eyes or strong lips, but for God’s sake not both. The lipstick’s not the problem here, it’s the pencilled eyebrows that make her look rough. Seriously, put your hand over that part of the picture and she looks so much better.
I was thrilled when Rachel was cast – she’s absolutely perfect for the mother of the murdered girl.
Thanks for spoiling the plot for me! Perhaps this is mentioned in the trailer — in that case nevermind, lol — but I’m just saying, not everyone has read the book. Be careful about plot spoilers.
SHE’S pretty — the make up is not.
There is no “warmth” to her coloring, especially with that color dress and stark foundation. So I just see dark hair, dark eyebrows, dark lips. Maybe a better blush? Does anyone wear ROOOOOUGE anymore?
The book was very good, but sometimes good books have to be dealt with carefully or not at all. EVERYTHING can’t be adapted/translated.
EDIT: The plot wasn’t spoiled. She’s dead from close to the beginning, her family is established early on.
You left out one point on the dress, is that it makes her look fat. After looking at it again, she does need to lose weight and hit the gym, the dress does not lie. I have never thought she was pretty, very ordinary looking, so she needs to work it to look good. She can’t afford mistakes like this.
Iggles – If you watch the trailer, you know the girl is murdered. If you read the back cover of the book, you know the girl is murdered. It’s not a spoiler.
She’s a gorgeous woman-and the problem is the dress is for a teenage girl. It’s WAY too short, and strangely layered.
@diva:
WHAT?!was it irony, or a joke?
I wish I was that gorgeous. Death warmed over? I think not.
I don’t think it’s the lipstick, I think it’s the eye makeup. I have similar colouring to her, and red lippie looks good on me, better than most other makeup. Although I tend to just wear mascara with it, not grey eyeliner/shadow.
Iggles – it is in the plot and will be mentioned in every movie description before the film is released it happens early on and triggers everything that happens in the movie. It’s not like she is murdered at the end. So don’t worry Kaiser didn’t ruin it for you… but Peter Jackson might have 😉
Unhealthy? Do you even know what you are talking about? These pictures looked like it they were photo shop. Most of the photos from the premiere has Rachel looking very healthy and elegant.
Rachel and Darren are not married. She has said they are quite happy with things as they are. Their 3 year old son is a real cutie and looks like her. She looks very pretty here to me.
I think it is the pictures too. But I don’t think they are photoshopped. The lighting maybe? In all the other pictures I looked at she looked great, in most you could see the shade of red she picked was flattering, which is hard to find.
When I was looking through the premier photos I noticed how great Peter Jackson looks, I forgot about his transformation. He has come so far since the Lord of the Ring days and has managed to keep it off. Congrats Peter! It is impressive to lose that much weight and even more so to keep it off for the better part of a decade.
Lenore, you’re right. I had my finger over the eyebrows and she looked great. The eyebrows are the main problem…and the dress. Bad color and horrible style.
Death warmed over?! She looks fabulous! I am sick of all the pale skin-hating. We pale girls are beautiful! Would you rather her skin be a Posh shade of orange?
Rachel actually has lovely warm brownish toned skin – she is quite exotic looking in my opinion. I’ve never thought of her as being a pale person, so I’m puzzled by this whole thread. I can link to hundreds of photos of her showing her skin as brown toned, but my posts tend to disappear when I do that, so I won’t.
This is probably the only site that had a problem with what Rachel was wearing. Plus the photos are not what they seem, especially when all you have to do is to go to other sites and see that she’s not as pale as the pictures are here. Its photoshopped.
wrong and wrong. she is beautifully styled in these photos. and olive skinned folks should wear orange, but be careful with greens and yellows, yes.
I think she looks lovely.
I think she wants to be seen as a vampy more seductress type of woman instead of the stay at home type she’s usually does. There’s a magazine interview she recently did where she talks about Agent Provocateur lingerie and burning I Conjure Candles’ Vixen Candle.
I think she looks great!
She’s had too much restalyne put in her face. She looks like a different person now, not nearly as pretty.
I think that’s just a bad photo. Any other photos I’ve seen she looks stunning in.
