King Charles and his current wife have not stepped foot in Australia or New Zealand since 2018. It’s been even longer for Prince William and Kate – April will be the tenth anniversary of their last tour Down Under. Charles and Camilla were supposed to spend their first two years traveling to all of the British realms and all of the British Commonwealth countries. They have not. Personally, I think Charles would have been perfectly willing to go on a travel blitz, but Rishi Sunak told him to stay home, and Camilla told him she doesn’t want to travel anymore, now that she’s queen. All of which should have meant that William and Kate would be sent to all of these countries to represent the crown. Except W&K refused to do so. Well, long story short, the palace has been trying to hype Charles and Camilla’s October 2024 trip to Australia for months now, and finally there’s a confirmation from Oz:
The King will visit Australia later this year, Anthony Albanese, the country’s prime minister, has confirmed. The King and Queen are expected to visit the country as part of a long-haul trip in late October, when they attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa.
A government spokesperson told The Australian newspaper that “the prime minister enjoys a warm relationship with the King, and looks forward to welcoming His Majesty to Australia later this year”.
Buckingham Palace declined to comment. It is understood that travel plans are at a very early stage. The visit will be the King’s first to Australia since his accession and the first by a ruling monarch since Elizabeth II in October 2011.
It will come at a sensitive moment for the Royal family, amid increasing speculation that Australia will become a republic. The most recent opinion poll, held just after Elizabeth II’s death, suggested that 46 per cent of Australians favoured a republic, while 54 per cent preferred the current system of government.
Mr Albanese voted in a referendum in 1999 for an Australian citizen to replace the British monarch as the country’s head of state. The results were similar to the recent opinion poll, with nearly 55 per cent voting to maintain the current system and 45 per cent favouring a republic.
Ahead of the King’s Coronation in May, Mr Albanese told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation: “I haven’t changed my position on that and I’ve made that very clear. I want to see an Australian as Australia’s head of state…That doesn’t mean that you cannot have respect for the institution, which is the system of government that we have. And I believe, as the Australian prime minister, I have a particular responsibility to represent the nation in a way that respects the constitutional arrangements, which are there.”
[From The Telegraph]
Aussie monarchists are apparently mad at Albanese because he’s a republican who shows respect to the British monarchy, but… doesn’t that just make Albanese good at his job? If I was in Albanese’s position, I’d want the royals to visit too – Charles, Camilla, William and Kate do not travel well and they all insist on neo-colonialist staging and ludicrous setpieces, all of which will accelerate Albanese’s fight for a referendum to ditch the monarchy. Albanese could not find a better reason for an Australian republic than Charles and Camilla. It will also be interesting to see if Charles and Camilla travel anywhere else before this October trip. Like… shouldn’t C&C visit Canada? My God.

Hopefully, Charles and Camilla showing up to do colonialist cosplay will convince the remaining Aussie monarchists that they need an Australian as head of state. And maybe the indigenous community will come out in force so Camilla can wait in the car a lot.
Albanese does make me proud to be an Australian (world-stage wise – during Abbott and Morrison it was incredibly cringeworthy every time they opened their mouths). He is really good at the diplomacy of dealing with an unnecessary monarchical structure that is inexplicably popular (I suspect/hope that will change as the next generation comes of voting age and the boomers die out).
I am not a member of the indigenous community, but hopefully I will have an opportunity to get out there with one of those yellow signs!
Canadian here…..I suspect we are on borrowed time and either C&C or W&K will soon grace our shores. I know they recently sent Anne and Sophie so maybe they think thats enough but I think it will be W&K. Eventually they will need to send those two to a Commonwealth country and I think Canada would be a relatively safe choice. I suspect Summer 2024 with the kids in tow.
Ugh, I hope they don’t come here. I loathe the thought of spending tax dollars on such utterly pointless excess. Take the money we would spend and put it toward indigenous reparations instead.
Also Canadian. God, I hope they don’t come here – what a colossal waste of money.
Looking forward to the Vancouver/ Whistler Invictus games instead!
KC will do what his mother did when she took the throne. He will visit each and every one of his overseas realms and open the respective parliament, seeing as this is part of a sovereign’s job duties.
Ooooh, if they come to my part of Australia (Melbourne) there’ll definitely be protests and I’ll be there with a Not My King yellow sign. I’m quite excited by the thought!
Ooh! I’m in Hobart but have been looking for an excuse for a Melbourne getaway! I’ll definitely keep my ears out for organised protests.
Hi fellow Melbourne (and Tassie) CBs,
I would also love to be part of the protest!! Let’s make this happen 😃
Yes more colonist cosplay please!! Let’s show them Aussie’s and the indigenous peoples that we are still in charge. Chuckles should stay home and watch what his upstart son is doing. When the cats away the mice will play.
The Mirror reported last month that the KIng and Queen will allegedly visit Canada this Spring but that paper never gets anything right so we’ll have to see if it’s true,
(sigh)
I had so much hope that 2024 would kick off with some/any good news.
What happened to the Anti-Monarchy push in Australia?
Directly after QE passed, the move to become free from the BRF in Oz and Ireland had gained some popularity, lots of press. Then Pfft.
Down with the Monarchy. Tax the 1%. Better standard of living for the people.
Things need to change, this SSDD has got to stop.
Should they travel more? I guess? But what’s the point, really. Feels like a losing battle. They’re heads of state, yeah, but aren’t they then supposed to visit places that will somehow help the UK? Which doesn’t necessarily mean a commonwealth country. They like to boast about the commonwealth but they don’t really care about it, except as a symbol of a past empire. So aren’t they going to choose countries to visit in which the govt needs them to visit to try and get better trade deals or something. Which might be a commonwealth county but might not be. Idk, maybe I’m not understanding this head of state thing well.
Why are they bothering, people are getting more and more fed up with all this Royal rubbish. To much money on to few people, when the money wasted on keeping them in luxury could solve so many problems for so many people it’s disgusting. Along with so many large houses going to waste as well. Hasn’t australia and all the other commonwealth countries got better things to spend their money on than pandering to the vanities of the British Royals
Most of Canada couldn’t care less about those useless wankers. If they do come here I would strongly advise that they have serious meetings with our First Nations’ peoples who have direct treaties with the monarchy. To date royal visits have been nothing more than performative with vague statements of friendship but little else. For residential school survivors, there’s a lot of bitterness about why QEII didn’t intervene when children were being forcibly taken from their families with the intent of obliterating their culture, language and spiritual beliefs. My guess is whoever visits — K&C or WanK — it will be yet another flop tour.
William will finally be able to set foot on Australian soil !
Well what do you know, at the end of the day Charles only has himself to send on the important visits. (but no one is interested….)
I don’t think he has a problem travelling by himself, ge just knows it’s not a good look to leave the QC behind. As for Camilla my thoughts: hahahahahaa. She visibly hates long trips and I love it for her. Zero sympathy from me. They can’t send Peg, because they are running out of excuses why Keen can’t go with him.
Yaaay. So glad we get to spend our money on these losers. Can’t possibly think of anything better to use our taxes on 🙄.
