Whoever had “lip readers will gain notoriety” on their 2024 bingo cards is off to a great start. Two viral moments emerged from the Golden Globes last week, thanks to folks on the interwebs acting as lip readers. The first was during the show when nominee Selena Gomez excitedly spilled some tea to pals Taylor Swift and Keleigh Teller. It appeared Keleigh’s response to Selena was “Timothée?” as in Chalamet. Some thought Selena said Timmy wouldn’t take a photo with her. Days later Selena commented that she was talking about different friends of hers who had hooked up, and we hoped she was referring to Meryl Streep and Martin Short. The other lip reading incident happened on the red carpet between John Krasinski and wife/nominee Emily Blunt, when online sleuths wondered (aloud) if John said to Emily “I cannot wait to divorce you.” Personally, I think John had recently spoken to Jamie Dornan and was actually saying “I can’t wait to kiss a horse, too.” In any event, Selena and Emily are definitely aware of the headlines, and they joked around about them while attending the AFI Awards last Friday:

Selena Gomez and Emily Blunt are joking about a new awards season strategy after rumors spread about conversations involving both actresses at the 81st Golden Globes.

On Friday, Jan. 12, Gomez and Blunt attended the American Film Institute Awards at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles. They posed together for a photo with one hand covering their mouths as they stared into the camera.

Gomez later shared a screenshot of the image as an Instagram Story. “We shall not speak lol,” she wrote to caption the photo.

Fans have speculated on social media this week about what was going on with each actress regarding two separate conversations seen taking place at the Golden Globes.

In one incident, Gomez chatted with Taylor Swift and Keleigh Sperry. Though fans could not hear what the women discussed, some social media users thought they could see Sperry say “Timothée.” This led to speculation about Timothée Chalamet and his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, and Gomez’s reported frustration at missing out on a chance to take a photo with Chalamet. Fans called for lip readers to weigh in on what they thought the conversation was about.

The Only Murders in the Building star later addressed the rumors herself by commenting on an E! News Instagram post, writing, “Noooooo I told Taylor about two of my friends who hooked up. No that that’s anyone’s business.”

In a separate incident at the Gloves, a TikTok user shared a video of John Krasinski and Blunt posing on the red carpet. The TikTok user, Kyle Marisa Roth, suggested that the A Quiet Place stars discussed the end of their marriage, with Krasinski reportedly telling his wife, “I can’t wait to divorce.” This rumor inspired other lip readers to share alternate things they believed Krasinski might have said.

As frustrating as the botched lip-readings must have been for Gomez and Blunt, at least they still have a sense of humor about the drama.

Yeah, this was a great way to respond. It’s not a stuffy statement of denial through reps. Instead Selena and Emily are being tongue-in-cheek (presumably, we can’t see behind their hands), essentially taking the wind out of the headlines. Like Kaiser said in her coverage last week, neither of the purported dramas made that much sense. Keleigh’s big reaction to Selena’s gossip was way too much for “He wouldn’t take a picture with me.” And Emily and John are seasoned celebs, they would not be talking divorce on a red carpet — let alone the Golden Globes red carpet. Please. This photo of Selena and Emily covering their mouths says, “We’re responding with the seriousness these stories deserve.” Well played, ladies.

Yes, but what do all those totally legitimate body language experts think? Can someone please classify whether they are touching festively or not?

But, I do acknowledge there can be expert lip readers, but not usually on the tabloid payroll or trolling the red carpet.

Quick! Someone get one of those charlatans who talk to the dead! They can ask Selena and John’s ancestors what’s the real tea! Who needs lip readers or body language when you’ve got hovering spirits?
