It’s sort of shocking to me that CNN continues to let Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper host CNN’s official New Year’s Eve coverage. This is the third year in a row, and they even brought Kathy back after last year’s hilarious debacle, where Kathy screamed at a heckler: “Screw you. Why don’t you get a job, buddy? You know what, I don’t go to your job and knock the d–ks out of your mouth!” Honestly, that was my favorite bullsh-t scandal. This year’s scandal is kind of “meh”.
So, anyway, Anderson pulled out some enlarged photos of some of the year’s biggest pop culture dipsh-ts, and had Kathy comment on them. They went through a couple, and then Anderson showed Kathy the photos of the Heenes, and “Balloon Boy” Falcon Heene. Kathy started in on them, but Anderson interrupted her to say “My favorite moment was when Balloon Boy – Falcon – interrupted to say ‘Who is Wolf?’” Kathy replied: “Fal– F-ckin? Falcon? How do you say it?” And all Anderson did was giggle (he giggles a lot) and say “You’re terrible. Really terrible.” Thankfully, no one seems to be getting their panties in a twist about this:
Does saying the F-word on live TV even matter anymore? Maybe not if you’re Kathy Griffin and expected to say outrageous things that will make Anderson Cooper look adorably abashed on CNN’s live New Year’s Eve special — because they both ignored it so smoothly. F-word? Live TV? Yawn.
Griffin and Cooper, whose New Year’s Eve pairing on CNN has become an annual tradition, were doing their usual jokey banter, discussing various moments of infamy from the past year, and particularly the saga of Balloon Boy (how hard is it gonna be for that kid to get a date in a few years, eh?). Cooper and Griffin were at their post in Times Square discussing Balloon Boy Perè, Richard Heene, and then the little one himself, Falcon Heene. Here’s how it went:
COOPER: Falcon Heene.
GRIFFIN: Fal — F-ckin? Falcon? How do you say it?
COOPER: (shaking head, eyes downcast) You’re terrible. Really terrible. And that was it! F-bomb on CNN live, New Year’s Eve. No biggie. Welcome to 2010. Or is there more to it? It should be noted that Griffin was famously unprintable before — last year she shot down a heckler by saying, again on live TV, “I don’t go to your job and knock the d-cks out of your mouth.” This year, she promised to forfeit her salary if she said anything naughty. So maybe it’s only naughty if Anderson Cooper acts shocked. Or maybe it’s 2010 and EVERYTHING’S DIFFERENT. Or maybe we’re just used to the F-bomb on live TV by now.

So, yeah. The bigger story is that Kathy might have f-bombed her way out of getting paid, but I doubt CNN is going to hold her to it. Besides, how much does CNN even pay Kathy for New Year’s Eve? Like, five bucks and a pint of Aristocrat vodka? Oh, and I think Kathy came close to “outing” Anderson too. Granted, I was drunk when I watched about 20 minutes of CNN’s coverage, but from what I remember, there were lots of double-entendres about tops and bottoms and “coming out” to see things.
I have a feeling Anderson Cooper keeps requesting her to come back, that’s why she’s there. Gay men love this chick!
Kathy has no class, don’t want any class and proably will never have any class. She is what she is. A female without class. I have never got what people thought was so funny about her. I try to find something good about just about everybody. For her I am still looking. Maybe before this decade is out I will find something. No big deal anyway it goes.
She didn’t exactly say “fuck”, just played around it. No big deal really.
I think that Kathy is very funny in a snarky, bitchy, maliciously judgmental way. She always has something humiliating to say about her fellow celebrities, but she does so in a funny way that is both mean and charming at the same time.
What makes her so peculiar is that all the things she says are true, but she never goes too far. I think that being nasty without appearing horrid (and keeping it funny all throughout) is a talent, and she has it.
Still, I agree with you K-Love: she has no class. The thing that what’s refreshing about her is that she admits it herself, and doesn’t apologize for it. She’s there to give her public what they want – embarrassing stories about celebrities and tacky jokes, and that’s exactly what she does.
I think she’s better than all those outrageously vulgar celebrities who go to great lengths to pretend that they are angelic creatures, and get upset when someone blows their cover, because it shows that they aren’t worthy of worship after all.
@ K-Love –
How ’bout this? Due to her mysterious popularity, she’s been able to afford all her plastic surgery. Is that nice enough?
On the lack of class, totally agree w/you!
I love Kathy, she is super funny. I will admit I think at times she is a bit much. Also Anderson is super cute and I think his giggle is about the best thing on TV. I watched most of their show and I don’t think she actually said the F-word …almost
The story I read included the following quote, “Asked whether Griffin would be invited back next year, CNN spokeswoman Shimrit Sheetrit said planning for the 2011 celebration hadn’t yet begun.” I’d love to hear her try to pronounce
“Shimrit Sheetrit”! The entire story is hilarious! It’s good to waste some media time taking our minds off of what really is going on in the world today…
Aristocrat vodka *gag*
I’d be Anderson Cooper’s Hag any day, but Kathy has grabbed that spot, damnit!
Homegirl is a FIRECROTCH!!
Don’t get the big attractin people have for Anderson. He’s okay looking, but nothing that special.
I am pretty sure I watched this but I cannot remember a single thing that was said. Damn you, Mimosas!
what is baffling to me is why CNN continues to hire her, year after year, despite being 100% aware that her whole gig is to shock audiences with outrageous observations and extreme profanity, but then try to essentially muzzle that.
if they wanted a tame, boring host that doesn’t swear, then hire someone else. it seems like a no-brainer. they get what they pay for and shouldn’t complain when kathy is just doing what we expect of her.
i myself enjoy her spending an hour and a half trying to make anderson cooper really uncomfortable on air, and he’s a great sport about it. you can tell they’re buddies in ‘real life’.
If she thinks saying the f-word is edgy, she needs to rethink her strategy. As for Cooper, I thought he was out already; weren’t pictures of him and his boyfriend posted a few weeks ago? Maybe I’m confused.
I think Kathy is really funny in small doses but she should continue to do CNNs NYE every year… I was thinking about who would watch CNN on NYE but really Seacrest can be pretty painful sooo…
Kathy just seemed to be trying too hard to get the f-word into the broadcast. Really, she’s smarter and funnier than that. Mispronouncing Falcon? A bit of a stretch. But AC seems to find her funny and she brings out the funny in AC. While he said “You’re terrible” he meant quite the opposite.
Still, I think the f-word is still considered ‘shocking’ because some people make WAY too bit a deal over it. Used in a non-vulgar context it can enhance any sentence!
I’ve seen and heard worse than her
Can’t stand her. I think she reached the high point of her career on Seinfeld.
I love Kathy!! She’s so awesome and such a bitch. She speaks the truth and does NOT mince words. What she said to that heckler last year was sooo hilarious! I forgot about it and when I read it just now I laughed out loud seriously hard! Oh Kathy.
I’m burned out on the pair of them. Oh well it could be worse we could have big mouth Rosie O’Donnell instead.
I find her voice irritating. Sometimes, she can be funny, though.
She shares way too much information about her personal life for me. I heard her interviewed talking about how her brother was locked up for being a pedaphile, I really don’t think that was necessary to call attention to that fact and embarass her mother.
She tries too hard.
Tiresome.
Right on she has herself a decent career. Bless those who able to get past the manufactured damage she has done to her looks and that shrilling voice. I can not get past either but I do not begrudge anyone a paycheck.
As for Anderson yea not aging well at all.
She’s a very funny person. That clip was just stupid. Too bad people in our society think the F-word in and of itself is a source of humor. It’s akin to little children saying “fart” or “booby” and giggling endlessly … So annoying.
I love kathy she makes fun of people and she is 100 porcent honest , she knows her faults and she is not afraid of getting banned from a show for telling the true about the host.
Kathy is exactly like an odious rhinestone brooch -obnoxious, sparkly and cannot be ignored.
I think she’s funny at times (great soundbites here and there) but she’s too noisy/squawkish to have to sit through, listen to and endure.
Too much like a spastic live cartoon for me.
Hasn’t Anderson been “out” for a year or better? I remember hearing about it quite some time ago so I’m puzzled that everyone acts like it’s still some big secret.
ever since she was on mtv cribs shes been on my shit list
Really, she’s smarter and funnier than that. We all have bad days:)
i wish Kathy was co-hosting on 360 – i can’t stand that freaky, smug & self-satisfied wench he continues to work with! she is ICK!! Kathy, please do your handiwork & get rid of her!!!
I like her 🙂 She’s funny!
I also think “trying” to say the F___
word old and a tired way to get a laugh.
However Anderson and Kathy are funny together. Coopgriffin…
Thanks for the auspicious writeup. It if truth be told was once a entertainment account it. Look complex to far brought agreeable from you! However, how can we be in contact?
