Jennifer Lopez steps out in Mexico City, says she sometimes feels ‘misunderstood’

Here are some photos of Jennifer Lopez attending Tuesday’s Mexico City premiere of Atlas, her latest Netflix film. She looked a lot “softer” at this premiere than she did at the LA premiere one day earlier. She basically wore hot pants and a big ruffled cape, but her hair and makeup are much improved here. This is sort of an underrated or under-appreciated quality for Jennifer: no matter what’s happening in her personal life, the hustle & grind must go on. She will always show up to promote her projects.

All of this Atlas promotion is happening concurrently with her marriage drama, with Ben Affleck reportedly moving out of their shared home and needing some space from J.Lo. While there’s been a lot of speculation about Ben & Jen’s movements, the timeline and the lack of Bennifer sightings for 47 days, I’ve yet to hear one solid story for exactly WHAT happened. Like, a fight, a blowup, one big thing which “caused” Ben to move out. At the LA premiere, J.Lo didn’t answer any questions about Ben, but she said something which is getting a lot of notice:

While speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at her new movie’s premiere on Monday, May 20 at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, Lopez, 54, said she sees similarities between herself and the character she plays, Atlas Shepherd.

Atlas is “a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence,” per the film’s synopsis. After joining a “mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past,” her “only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it.”

Admitting she would “always” “infuse a little bit” of herself into the character when playing Atlas, Lopez tells PEOPLE, “We are so different because she’s like … doesn’t wear any of her emotions. She’s so closed off and I am too much emotion sometimes.”

“But at the same time we are both very strong and sure of what they feel,” the musician continues. “At times. She was very sure. She was like, ‘This is what’s happening, please listen to me. Please tell me.’ And felt very misunderstood at times. I can also relate to that a bit.”

Commenting on knowing what she wants to achieve when it comes to creative characters, Lopez says, “I’m very sure of what I want and sometimes I’m not. Sometimes I’m very doubtful of myself, but I follow my instincts more than anything and I find that when I go against that, is when I go wrong.”

Jennifer… feels misunderstood. I can see that, and I do think a lot of people misunderstand her. I’ll say it again – watching Halftime (her documentary filmed in 2019-20) really altered my view of Jennifer and what she’s all about. In some ways, it feels like what happened directly after that moment has been a backslide for J.Lo.

Now I’m curious about Halftime. Can anyone fill me in?

    • mary mary says:

it’s just a bunch of “it was MY show” “I was the one supposed to shine” “why didn’t they let MEEEEEE do it alone?”, and so forth

    • StillDouchesOfCambridge says:

It was very everything that I thought of Jen and nothing’s changed.

  2. Kirsten says:

No, stop — you have terrible instincts. Go against them all of the time, lol.

  3. K says:

    She’s really gorgeous
    Wow.

  4. cel2495 says:

    she lost weight… still beautiful.

Not sure she is “misunderstood” I work on her brand for Khols back in the day and she was not nice at all. I am saying years ago before all this “Jlo is a mean girl” things came out. A friend also worked on her Gigly or whatever that horrible movie she did with Ben Affleck was called, poster and she complained about the photoshop in her waist area not being enough and her back acne showing ( yes she has back acne or at least had it back then). She flipped out and he almost lost his job.
another time, when she was married to Marc Antony, they stayed at Le Parker Meridian Hotel in Midtown. Another friend worked there and told me that she was upset because Marc stopped to sign a little kid ( around 10yrs) a photograph and she pissed off told him to “hurry up” and move along cause she found the little boy asking for an autograph annoying. there are many other stories like this. So not sure what part she feels people misunderstand her. She is not a nice person.

    • Christina says:

Yes, Cel2495. The public image is always more important to her than the people around her.

She is driven and depends on her beauty and hustle to get the attention she feels she deserves, but is it worth it? I used to like her because she brought visibility to smart, beautiful Latinas. She made how we look mainstream. She made it okay to be curvy, and she was glorious on In Living Color. She represented white Latinas well. I’m not such a big fan anymore. People at the top are, generally speaking, there because they prioritize and compartmentalize away their humanity.

There was a thread about how she and Affleck are Leo’s and about horoscopes in another CB post. She and I share a birthday with Zelda Fitzgerald and Amelia Earhart. I work to avoid the tendencies she has. Seeking the spotlight can be dangerous if the ego isn’t properly managed. I think that homegirl needs therapy and needs to know who she really is. Her sense of self is too anchored to her outsides, in my opinion.

      • cel2495 says:

@Christina, Totally agree. She was so ill mannered and mean, her demands insane and completely out of touch ( room temperature water, no one to look her int he eyes, white roses everywhere for a 30 min meeting and more) just crazy shit. By many accounts, it seems that even when her husband has other problems , he is known for being nice to staff and the service industry ( restaurants, drivers etc). Not sure how her behavior is tolerated by him. I know for a fact that having a partner that is ill mannered makes it hard to live with them. i had a boyfriend that was like that with people ( not me) and after 5 months of watching this and asking him to correct this behavior i could not deal with him and dump him. Maybe just maybe he thought that after 20yrs she changed and had grown but sadly found out that she is the same she was 20yrs ago, entitled and mean.

  5. Walking the Walk says:

The dress is fire, the shoes…why?

    • Huckle says:

she doesn’t have to hem the dress maybe?

      • Flamingo says:

Or can’t hem it, which is why so many actresses look ill fitted in designer dresses since they are just loaners and can’t be altered.

  6. Christina says:

She looks thin and unhappy, like she is forcing back tears. Always gorgeous, always responsible to contractual obligations. She should see a therapist so that she learns to like herself. Being liked is what attracts so many to public life. She is so successful, but her face today makes it not seem worth it. In the thread above, Cel2495 tells some of the many stories of how mean she can be. Is it worth it to lose your humanity?

  7. seraphina says:

I agree with @Chrsitina, above. She looks thin and, I would say “down”. Like she is not exuding the same force and energy she usually does. Almost like she’s being worn down. But that is one picture, so who knows what story we would take away from the other pics.

  8. Peanut Butter says:

I don’t think there’s a whole lot of misunderstanding about her. On another note, those shoes are a crime.

  9. theotherviv says:

Is it just me or does “brilliant but misanthropic data analyst” sound like something I did’t imagine JLo play? Did she cast herself? How did this happen? Is this real.

  10. Skyblue says:

Atlas looks like something I will hate-watch based solely on the trailer. I realize it is a big universe and plenty of room for more than one woman who is distrustful of AI, but c’mon! Atlas looks like a glitzy version of Alien/Aliens. Ripley is the only woman I trust to kick-a$$ in outer space.

    • FastForward says:

I’m curious about how AI is being represented in pop culture so I think I’ll actually watch it. I can’t stand her in romantic comedies and other non-action films though (I thought Anaconda was fun and I will also catch The Mother at some stage). But it’s true the concept of her in a body armour is like Ripley’s dock worker moment (but then also Iron Man, Edge of Tomorrow, etc.)

  11. Jaded says:

    Those shoes are vile.

  12. Polly says:

    She is deeply, deeply insecure.
