Today is the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when Allied troops rocked up Nazi-controlled Normandy. There are D-Day commemorations held in Normandy every year, but for the big anniversaries (50th, 60th, etc), there’s a real effort to bring together as many world leaders as possible on Omaha Beach, the site of the deadliest part of Operation Overlord for American troops. British and Canadian troops were obviously involved in D-Day, and there are special memorials and commemoration events held on other beaches and at other sites.
These photos are of President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron greeting King Charles and Queen Camilla at the British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer. Apparently, Charles and Camilla will not join the world leaders on Omaha Beach today in a somewhat last-minute change. They were originally scheduled to do just that – go to Ver-sur-Mer AND Omaha – but now they’re saying it’s too much for Charles given the fact that the man still has cancer. At Ver-sur-Mer, Charles gave a moving speech in which he echoed his grandfather’s words:
Eighty years ago on D-day, the 6th of June 1944, our nation – and those which stood alongside it – faced what my grandfather, King George VI, described as the supreme test. How fortunate we were, and the entire free world, that a generation of men and women in the United Kingdom and other allied nations did not flinch when the moment came to face that test.
On the beaches of Normandy, on the seas beyond and in the skies overhead, our armed forces carried out their duty with a humbling sense of resolve and determination – qualities so characteristic of that remarkable wartime generation.
Very many of them never came home, they lost their lives on the D-day landing grounds or in the many battles that followed. It is with the most profound sense of gratitude that we remember them and all those who served at that critical time. We recall the lesson that comes to us again and again across the decades – free nations must stand together to oppose tyranny.
This vital start to the liberation of Europe was a vast allied effort. American, British, Canadian, French and Polish formations fought here in Normandy. Among the names inscribed on the walls and pillars of this memorial are men and women from more than 30 different nations and many faiths.
United, they fought together for what my grandfather, King George VI, described as ‘a world in which goodness and honour may be the foundation of the life of men in every land’.
[From The Guardian]
This actually made me a bit emotional, Charles echoing his grandfather’s words, thinking about Prince Philip’s service during the war (in the Pacific theater) and all of that. Also: Camilla’s hat is ridiculous. It didn’t have to be that big and cartoonish.

Camilla’s hat IS ridiculous for such a solemn event. It would be whimsical if she wore it somewhere festive like a horse race.
I just watched Biden’s speech live and it was fantastic.
It looks like she’s been trying to cosplay Charles’ grandmother lately.
It looks like a pile of white cake frosting. And unless she was trying to make the veterans laugh, it’s a terrible choice.
My first thought was has she placed two hats on top of each other? When i zoomed my mind went straight to soft ice.
Of course she is, because Kate Missington has been compared to her husband’s grandmother a lot in the press.
Charles wearing his fake uniform on such an occasion is really hard to handle.
The people who died as well as those who survived this incredible day and the start to the allied take back of Europe deserve better than that.
I was wondering about that as well. Did he ever serve? He looks like he’s wearing a costume and if he never served, it’s incredibly insulting to trot out cosplay for such an event. His side-piece looks pissed to be somewhere that doesn’t involve booze or horses.
Agreed I’m sorry its very distracting and looks silly. He should just be in a suit like the other leaders.
@Josephine Charles served in the Navy and the Air Force.
This particular uniform makes him look like a dictator.
@miranda those were my thoughts exactly.
@Rhonda If it’s not the rank he achieved in actual service then it is a fake uniform. WTH does any of this have to do with returning shopping carts?
I’m just laughing @kaiser saying the hat didn’t have to this big and ridiculous. Whereas I’m like this hat didn’t even have to be… She didn’t even have to wear a hat really. Brigitte did not need one. Hats don’t always have to be worn🤷♀️. That said yes it would be whimsical and cute for another setting.
Yes to both, her hat is so bad! Wtf. Biden’s speech was so good, he understands sacrifice for the military and national defense.
Even Chuck did a good job, though his pettiness over Biden is next level. Biden skipped his coronation like all US presidents have done. Grow up, Chuck!
I thought that Charles’ speech was a typical boilerplate speech which high-up Brits make at about this time of year, honestly.
What I found odd was that he needed to say “my grandfather, King George VI” twice in such a short speech. Surely, having established which grandfather he was talking about earlier, it would have sufficed to simply say “my grandfather” after that?
Camilla’s hat reminds me of something you’d see in a Dr Seuss book
@TRex – yes, Dr Seuss hat comprised of beret parked on top of wide brim hat with collapsible crown.
@Magdalena – Agree that Chuck’s speech sounded boilerplate. Especially so after watching Disney+ (NatGeo) “Erased: WW2’s Heroes of Color” and finding out contributions of British Empire’s Indian Army in Episode 3. Series is executive produced by Idris Elba, sounds like it will show up on Hulu also.
Well that’s all well and good of a speech but it does nothing to repair how he never acknowledges the wounded veterans that are part of Invictus. I still believe he isn’t going to Omaha Beach because he is angry with Biden.
THIS☝🏾
@Susan Collin – I totally agree. It’s also worth noting our PM isn’t going either he’s sending the Foreign and Defence Secretaries instead. I think it’s disgraceful that both the king and his PM have chosen to skip this major ceremony. This shouldn’t be about imagined feuds or campaign trails; this is about those who gave so much in order for us to have the freedoms we now enjoy
Wait, what? I must have missed something – what is his beef with Biden?!
It’s personal. Biden is extremely proud of his Irish roots and is known to take subtle digs at the monarchy. That’s probably the reason Jill Biden was stuck in the back at the coronation, but I don’t think she cared.
@Lucky Charm – Biden didn’t go to the Conanation. What made it worse was that Biden was in Ireland that week but, couldn’t find the time to attend. Jill Biden did attend and was stuck in the back.
As far as I know the UK still haven’t held a state dinner with the president even though Biden did attend one in France.
There’s also Camilla’s indiscretion when she told her friends in the press about Biden “farting.”
Then to top it all Biden isn’t too keen on royalty in general AND Jill Biden read (and enjoyed) Spare. So, take your pick! 😆
Probably skipping the coronation in favor of a trip to Ireland.
Honestly, in addition to the specific issues mentioned by others, I’m sure the courtiers are miffed Biden doesn’t bend the knee enough for their liking. Britain’s expectations of our “special relationship” seems to be that we act like a colony while they are the empire, just like they look down on the commonwealth nations who they think are only there to serve British interests. Imagine thinking the POTUS should get involved in your ridiculous and petty family feuds, but yet the palaces couldn’t wait to run to the tabloids to leak they had asked Biden to snub Harry and make sure he wasn’t given a ride to the coronation.
Pres & Dr Biden always do what is proper but they aren’t going above and beyond to cater to this nonsense. Remember the drive by sidewalk “meeting” with keen statesman William in Boston? Biden is Irish to his soul.
Biden’s Pennsylvanian-Irish, his people probably belonged to the Ancient Order of Hibernians, had a shillelagh over a portrait of JFK in the den, and learned the motto “Burn Everything English But Their Coal” at their grandpa’s knee.
NONE of the USA presidents had ever attended BRF Coronation. It’s not just because Biden’s Irish. Brits & KC3 singled out President 46 & had it bad for Joe’s not attending was ridiculous.
Yes, and also this: British newspapers such as the Telegraph have been writing “King Charles will LEAD the world….blah blah blah…” regarding these events. Charles must have been put on notice that he would NOT, in fact, be “leading the world”, but that President Biden or other elected officials would. In other words, becoming king did not suddenly make him more important than certain foreign leaders. They’re just using the illness to mask his fit of pique.
No one from the British royal family ever attends American presidents’ inaugurations. There was no reciprocity for the Brits to expect. Jill Biden’s attendance at the coronation was a diplomatic grace, which the British did not appear to meet with equal grace.
Charles looks ridiculous too with his unearned medals and fancy scepter.
It is a weird sight to behold.
Chuckles looks out of touch. He may have served but didn’t see anything close to combat. It’s simply not dignified to wear a uniform and medals that were handed to you. Side Chick dressed to be noticed in that breezy garden party outfit topped off with another Dr. Seuss-inspired hat. Whenever she smiles, I think horses have nicer teeth. I’ll never understand why people with money don’t bother to fix their teeth.
To be fair, Charles was the heir to the throne and they wouldn’t have sent him anywhere near combat, just like they wouldn’t send William.
Maybe Charles was trying to be in step with Camilla’s hat ‘s absurd level of ridiculousness , parading w/ his silly scepter & fake metals while surrounded by hundreds of aging men & women faced the most brutal conditions of WWII.
Rule Rutania!
I saw the scepter and had to look up why he was carrying his cheerleading spirit stick to a memorial. It’s one thing to do these somewhat silly looking throwbacks on your own island but it looks ridiculous at an otherwise entirely modern international event, just like his tin pot dictator uniform.

“Cheerleading spirit stick”. LOL
First let me say I’m glad KCIII is there and it’s right he is there. However, I do have a problem with him wearing a uniform with so many meaningless medals. There are men (and women) there who fought on those beaches who have less medals than he does. It’s bliddy ridiculous. IMHO he should have worn a suit. KCIII is still the king regardless, he doesn’t need to “dress up.” Macron is the president and still has gravitas in his suit and tie.
Yeah, juxtaposed with Macron and Biden who are able to convey gravitas and respect without all the medals, it looks silly. They’re royal so they wear a bunch of unearned medals. It’s such a weird self-own in terms of fake importance.
Really well said, Jais. That’s it exactly, Chuck looked like a cosplay dictator who has never seen battle wearing his costume. I’ve heard attempts to defend it, but it just looks out of date, colonial, and inappropriate.
He should have come dressed like other leaders and let his speech take center stage, because it was actually good.
At this point, @withtheamerican, these people are gonna do what they’re gonna do. 💯 he looks like a cosplay dictator but he don’t care. 💯 Camilla looks like she escaped from whoville but she don’t care. They want to stand out for attention. All these appropriate looking people from Biden to Trudeau to Macron and his wife and here comes the bumbling fools, Camilla and Charles, stubborn in their need for attention and in their belief that they are important. They are not. That said, I think Camilla’s hat is hilarious…for a garden party or some quirky British event. Absolutely not for a Dday memorial. Lordy, wth? Classless clowns.
I agree wholeheartedly. This particular uniform also looks very cartoonishly dictatorish, which is likely not the vibe he was going for.
Looks like he’s going for the Field Marshall Rommel look!
So tacky. Such poor taste.
Charles can parrot words all day but he can’t move an ounce of emotion through me. I’d need to have a modicum of respect for him for that to happen.
Also Winston Churchill was prime minister in 1944. Here’s Charles quoting “my grandfather” who, as king, only read the words written for him by Churchill’s government. This family. Everything is always all about them.
And before I get swarmed, yes, Churchill was a horrible racist and colonialist.
THIS. To not even mention the UK’s “famous wartime prime minister” is a choice. I thought the tories (including royals) LOVED Churchill?
I don’t think this man ever had cancer at all and it was pretty stupid for H to jump on a plane to see him and I think Harry realized after he got to the UK that something is amiss.
He looked truly awful and still doesn’t look right. I can believe that he had cancer. My Dad was an incredibly healthy and vibrant man and developed cancer at 86 years old. And Chuckles seems like an unhealthy individual, so not far-fetched to believe he has cancer.
If he truly cares about veterans then he should support IG with his whole heart and been proud to attend the service with his son last month AND help to secure the games for Birmingham!
The teary-eyed servicemen in wheelchairs who must still harbor personal horrors from that day is what got to me. So, I agree, Charles speech of remembrance rang false given the fact that he ignores the injured veterans of the IG. Also, as others have noted, the medals and uniform are an insult to those who actually sacrificed in service of their countries. And Camilla’s mad-hatter crown is annoyingly frivolous.
A senior MET officer officer is currently facing a misconduct hearing for wearing a medal he is NOT entitled to wear re serving in the Falklands war when he was only 15! He also appears to have extended his military career, claiming attendance at a prestigious college and various high level postings which he APPLIED FOR but did not get. I shook my head when I read the charges he faces because if found guilty of lying on his application form, aggrandizing his military service record and achievements he will be disgraced and sacked.
https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/falklands-britannia-royal-naval-college-northamptonshire-police-royal-navy-british-b1160597.html
I was very humbled and moved by the grace and courage of the veterans who were speaking yesterday and today. I don’t know how Chuck and Will can flaunt a chest of medals in the company of such gallant men and women. The Met officer is being held accountable if he is falsely claiming service and yet the Royals are lorded for military cosplay and bottle top medals: it does not seem right or fair.
Two random observations:
Charles is really shrinking. He’s now shorter than Macron.
Also – he is NOT a good colour. He looks distinctly ill and the powder they keep covering him in to disguise it is not helping.
The only reason british were able to pull this off because so many countries are under british empire and they used many poc for this war but they never honor them. Also this ww2 piss me off because winston churchill killed many indians and caused famine and used those grains for war.
Yes. Have been watching great series on Disney+ (NatGeo) “Erased: WW2’s Heroes of Color.” Episode 3 is about British Indian Army. Sounds like the series will be shown on Hulu. More than 8M people of color served with Allies, frequently in subservient roles, almost always segregated, then forgotten in histories.
If you haven’t listened to his full speech, Biden at least noted the contributions of POC in his speech: “…hundreds of thousands of people of color, and women, who courageously served despite unjust limitations on what they could do.” He referenced by name three people who were present and noted their contributions; two African American men, one of whom was a Tuskegee airman, and one woman.
Thanks windyriver.
Will make sure to watch Biden’s full speech.
@kirk – I watched the replay on the White House YouTube channel from the time Biden and Dr. Jill walked in with the Macrons. Some interesting aspects of the overall ceremony.
The invocation was done by a female Army chaplain.
The Watch was read at the end by a female lieutenant commander, Navy.
The first speech was by the Secretary of the American Battle Monuments Commission, a former politician from Hawaii, Charles Djou, who is Asian American.
The Secretary of Defense spoke just before Biden. He’s Lloyd Austin III, a retired four star general, Army, who is African American.
After his speech, Macron personally greeted and pinned a Legion of Honor medal on eleven veterans, each followed by a personal greeting from Biden. Two of the honored veterans are African American. (Support personnel did an excellent job unobtrusively helping each man to stand for the presentation.)
Just before Biden spoke a short video was played with war footage and recollections from other veterans. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg were in the audience and I’m curious if they produced it.
Much of what was said in the speeches referenced the fight against tyranny, obviously with respect to the WWII aggressors (Biden also mentioned the current Ukraine situation). But it was impossible not to think about the worldwide aftereffects of Britain’s own tyranny over the centuries – making Charles’ decision to show up in uniform – carrying that ridiculous scepter – yet more offensive.
The chestful of unearned medals are a bit much, but royals gotta royal. I saw Bidden give his speech at Normandy and it was inspiring but what was really inspiring was Macron giving Legion of Honor medals to the surviving US veterans.
I wonder why Biden wasn’t there? America suffered the most casualties on D Day. You’re welcome Europe *bald eagle scream*
Biden was there. He gave a very moving speech.
This was at the British Memorial. Biden is at the American Cemetery.
I hope you’re being glib on the casualty remarks. America sat out the war for years until it was attacked and then joined the war effort. It wasn’t doing Europe a favour.
Also, America’s late entry in the war effort did impact both the size, freshness, and resources of its fighting force relative to other countries.
Exactly, Sunny! My grandfather always called himself (jokingly) a D Day dodger because as a Canadian he was already in Europe fighting BEFORE D Day, and had been overseas since 1939. D Day was pivotal and deserves to be recognized but it’s disheartening to read how dismissive many now seem to be towards the men and women who had been fighting the Nazis long before June 6, 1944!
If we’re just talking about D-Day, the US did have the greatest number of casualties of all the Allies. Of all involved, Nazi Germany had the most.
No one is dismissing the people who fought before June 6, 1944. It’s being recognized because it was so pivotal and was the beginning of the end for the Nazis, even though it took a very long time obviously after that for the end to really be reached.
@Sunny – I specifically said D Day.
I love a subtle Colbert Report reference. Which seemed to have been missed by many.
I think what even more ridiculous than Camilla’s hat was Charles dressing like a member of the military.
So embarrassing that Charles wears medals and uniforms in front of war heroes
The South American military.
It’s disgraceful. And so disrespectful to the war heroes who saved democracy for the world.
Similar to the registry wedding outfit only the hat was better back then. Hat worn at event is too ostentatious.
Camilla is a vampire and that’s why she needed such a big hat, otherwise her face might have melted in the sun.
I suspect in the top photo, First Lady Macron had to turn her head, so she wouldn’t be caught laughing at Big Hat Ho and her toy soldier. Blessings and gratitude to those who truly served.
President Macron looks good! ☺️
Bit off topic, but it’s about this event.
I’ve been reading an article in the Guardian about the commemoration at the British Normandy Memorial, which described, among other scenes, the speech a 100 years old British veteran delivered today.
The Guardian also shared how a British piper was brought ashore in an amphibious vehicle at 7:25 a.m., the time the operation started on 6/6/1944 and how everything took off from there:
“British paratroopers recreated an airdrop behind German defences, although they were rather incongruously required to show their passports to French customs as a consequence of Brexit.”
from https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/jun/06/i-have-never-taken-his-sacrifice-for-granted-words-of-d-day-veterans-stir-crowd-in-normandy
And there are photos of the events, including Dr. Jill and President Biden here
https://www.theguardian.com/world/gallery/2024/jun/06/d-day-80th-anniversary-in-pictures
The one that got me was the sunrise this morning at Omahaha Beach, so peaceful compared to the battle that was fought there 80 years ago to liberate Europe.
Charles does indeed look ridiculous wearing his jubilee medals amidst the veterans who served that day and his speech was meh. I don’t care for Rishi Sunak’s politics but he was pushing the wheelchair of an 100 year old veteran and he asked everyone who could stand, to stand and applaud the veterans, far better optics.
The Macrons have been killing it this entire event and thank God that Bone Spurs Trump was nowhere near it.
Good catch on the hypocrisy of KC and Invictus, although the speech was well-written and moving. On a sidenote, I appreciate all of the attention being paid to D-Day today—I hope those crusty MAGA assholes can connect the dots between Nazism and the world’s ongoing desire to defeat it. I’m feeling optimistic.
He did not give a speech. He stood there and read from a paper in that horrid nasal, arrogant voice. They all do; they just read from a paper. Not one of them can give a real speech.
Why does Camilla always look like a toad, no matter what she wears? Madame Macron and her husband look so chic. I can’t forget a commenter from yesterday asking about Camilla’s hat from yesterday “is that a pink taco on her head?” Please forgive that I don’t remember the name. But I’m still being tickled about the comment. So funny. Camilla’s dresser must be a toad herself, doesn’t like her, or has given up.
Also, I find all the ceremonies and speeches moving, but when reading the words of Charles, I said to myself, apparently one may talk of goodness and honor without trying to live with those values in one’s own life. And what the heck does Charles have in his hand? Is he carrying a baton? What for? What does that symbolize?
