Will ‘The Bikeriders’ turn Austin Butler into a major movie star?

I haven’t paid much attention to the hype around The Bikeriders, but here you go. The Bikeriders was written and directed by Jeff Nichols and it stars Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Jodie Comer and Michael Shannon. Great cast, honestly. Unfortunately, they got two British actors to play Americans-in-the-1960s. I didn’t realize it until now, but this film is a period piece about the rise of a motorcycle gang and, like, motorcycle-gang culture. Here’s one of the trailers.

I’ve already seen people talk about how this will be Austin Butler’s big star-making role. While he was Oscar-nominated for Elvis – and he was still talking like Elvis years after he played the man – it feels like Austin’s biggest buzz came from his turn in Dune 2. He was honestly great in that movie and I liked that he was sort of playing against type rather than leaning into his good looks. The Bikeriders is different – they’re basically trying to make him into the second coming of James Dean. He’s styled to look SO pretty in the film. And in his promotional appearances, he’s leaning into the pretty too. The pics in this post are from the London premiere and Rome photocall. He looks good.

I would say he’s already a movie star

Totally agree. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anyone so ridiculously good looking. Up there with Tyrone Power, Ricky Nelson, Freddy Mercury.

      • ella says:

Agree. I think he will definitely make it as a big movie star, Oscar winner, etc. He poses no public relations threat and is liked a lot it seems. All of the best actors are often functional addicts and misogynists but not him, if he keeps it that way. And most of all he’s talented.

    • Angel says:

Totally agree. He is so beautiful & if you saw him host SNL, dude has range & will do anything. He is so charming in interviews and super driven (Denzel sai he had the whole script memorized, everyone’s lines when they were in a play together). I think with Elvis, he hit movie star status and w all the good parts he is choosing, he is the next big thing.

    Loretta, I agree.

Yeah . . . it’s a no for me. I just don’t find anything about this guy interesting. Being a star is about being more than a good actor, it’s also about the ability to be compelling and he just isn’t. High on his own supply (as evidenced by the extended Elvis accent)? Sure. Intriguing? Nope, hard pass.

    • NJGR says:

Yeah, to me he seems pretty bland. And that sad little pornstache isn’t helping.

    • Ben says:

I agree Terra. Gay guy here and many of us have been drooling over the Barry Keoghans and the Josh O’Connors for a while now. I feel nothing when I see Austin. Hollywood have been trying hard to make Austin happen. He’s conventionally handsome. True movie stars are an endangering species in my opinion. To me that’s a Keanu, a Clooney.

    • KN says:

I agree, Terra! He’s a good actor–I was definitely impressed by his performance in Dune. But I don’t see the charisma and star power that movie stars have.

  4. Kitten says:

He’s hot and I would and that’s all I have to say about THAT.

  5. starrwebb10 says:

No, I really don’t think he has the talent to hold up the “Movie Star” label for years to come. He is beautiful to look at, but have you watched him act in anything other than Elvis? Im nearly through Masters of the Air and he is ruining the show for me!

  6. mary mary says:

Is Tom Hardy not doing promo for this movie? Because, to me, this is a Tom Hardy movie (?), which I’ll absolutely watch… for Tom Hardy.

  7. Digital Unicorn says:

While he’s both easy on the eyes and a pretty good actor with some range am not sure he has the ‘A list blockbuster\ movie star gravitas that his team are pushing him into – he’d do well in low budget indie type roles. Its the same with Timothee C – he’s being pushed in the same direction and is as wet as water. Out of the 2 of them – Butler is the better actor who could have a lasting career if he continues to pick his roles carefully.

  8. Libra says:

Is he still with Kaia Gerber?

  9. Square2 says:

Austin seems like a good fellow. However, purely from the point of acting, he can be a movie star only if he choose the right roles. He can portrait a big personality person (Elvis) or a villain (Dune Part 2), but he can’t do “quiet” (Masters of The Air). He was not good in the romantic scenes (episode 1) in MOTA. He is not a James Dean; Dean’s acting had more range.

  10. Mel says:

I liked his performance in Elvis, he was the best thing in a boring movie. He was good in Dune but I think I’d rather set myself on fire than sit through this movie. YAWN!!!!

  11. JFerber says:

He seems thirsty as hell to me. He REALLY wants it. He does nothing for me. I don’t think he has IT, but he’ll do anything to get to the heights he wants. I wonder if Kaia Gerber will be there for the whole ride or if he or she will drop it once he does or does not make it. I think they’re both using each other. Just my opinion.

  12. Mee says:

I’ll never forget what Siskel/Ebert said about movie stars- the audience response is what makes a star. They took note of the audible reaction to Brad Pitt in the theatre during Thelma/ Louise. Women gasped at his looks. Clooney built his through ER. Hanks was talent and down home charm. Women could trust Julia R. Austin is a) young b) puts on an act off screen. And he’s plain dull. Just slightly above Scott Eastwood.

  13. Berryshortcakes says:

    No, the film is boring.
I got to see it at a film festival last year and I almost fell asleep!

  14. Denise B. says:

I adore Austin and will always believe he deserved the Oscar for “Elvis.” That said, I am dismayed at what to me seems his current “strong silent type,” too understated, whispery approach to acting. Speak up! Also, after being Mr. Seductive in his earlier 20s roles, Austin now won’t even kiss “Cathy,” the woman he’s supposed to be nuts about in “The Bikeriders”! He needs to get more authentic. Don’t worry about the character’s inner life; project your own.

  15. Mea says:

he’s got a jonathan rhys meyers look going on in the press photos
