Last week, parts of Sharon Stone’s cover interview with the Tatler came out, and people got pissed. I was one of them. In the course of the interview, Sharon Stone was talking about aging in Hollywood, and she sort of went off on a tangent about why Meryl Streep has such a flourishing career. Stone said: “I think that’s why Meryl Streep is working so much, because she looks like a woman we can all relate to. I look at her and I think, ‘I’m chasing my kids, I’ve moved my parents in with me, I’m coping with food spills – that looks like me in real life.’ Meryl looks like an unmade bed, and that’s what I look like. To me, that looks true.”
While many of you pointed out that perhaps this should be interpreted as Stone’s odd way of complimenting Meryl, I still think it’s a really f-cked-up, bitchy, snide insult. Stone is basically “complimenting” Meryl on looking totally average (in Stone’s mind), while the unspoken, nasty, passive-aggressive statement is really, in Stone’s mind, that she doesn’t get the same work as Meryl because she (Stone) is such a ravishing beauty, while Meryl isn’t. Meryl is “relatable” because she’s not beautiful, and women can’t “relate” to Sharon because she’s so gorgeous. That’s how I interpreted her comments initially, and I stand by it. I still think it was a horrible thing to say about Meryl Streep.
Anyway, Sharon gave an interview to PopEater where she’s trying to half-heartedly eat sh-t for how we “took” her comments. Here’s Stone’s statement to PopEater:
Sharon Stone is fighting back against a magazine quote in which the actress seemed to bash Meryl Streep, as Stone tells PopEater exclusively that the publication took her quote completely out of context. “It is not ok with me for someone to take a statement I made with good-natured intent and to try and make it in to something politically incorrect,” Stone tells PopEater.
The quote in UK’s Tattler Magazine (via Huffington Post), had Stone saying: “I think that’s why Meryl Streep is working so much, because she looks like a woman we can all relate to … Meryl looks like an unmade bed, and that’s what I look like. To me, that looks true.”
Stone refutes how that quote is being portrayed, telling PopEater: “My love and support for what she [Streep] represents for women right now is extraordinarily important.”
Her publicist agrees, adding that “the full context of what Sharon said about Meryl Streep in her interview with Tattler Magazine was meant as a compliment. Sharon greatly admires Meryl as a person, an actress, and as a friend.”
The ‘Basic Instinct’ and ‘Casino’ actress also allegedly says in the Tattler interview: “I look at her and I think, ‘I’m chasing my kids, I’ve moved my parents in with me, I’m coping with food spills – that looks like me in real life.'”
Also in the Tattler interview, Stone denies having any plastic surgery done, but then is quoted saying she did have work done once. “I have had zero, nothing done to myself: no lifting, no Botox, no injectables,” she said. “I did try something once and I saw myself in a movie and didn’t like the way I looked. I thought I looked like I had a giant balloon head, and I felt it wasn’t for me.
[From PopEater]
So, basically, it’s all our fault for thinking Sharon Stone is a bitch. And not only is it our fault, Sharon wants us to know that “it’s not okay” for us to read her comments and think she’s a bitch. We were supposed to intuitively know that Sharon, in fact, meant the exact opposite of what she was recorded saying. Here’s what Sharon could have said: “I was trying to give Meryl a compliment, but it came out wrong and for that, I apologize. I love and worship her. She is a million times the actress I could ever dream of being, and she‘s gorgeous.” But no! Sharon thinks we’re being too “politically correct” while hiding behind another bullsh-t statement about Streep’s career representing “women’s rights.” She never denied saying or thinking that Meryl “looks like an unmade bed” and that’s why this non-denial denial is full of sh-t. Just like Sharon.

I don’t think she’s very articulate. She just blurts out vaguely appropriate adjectives and ideas. But I agree about the subtext of her comments, partly because she’s always seemed so full of herself, especially when she was considered hawt, ten or fifteen years ago.
Like I said the other day –
Sharon Stone is ugly on the inside and out.
Meryl has more talent in her pinky finger than Sharon Stone. And that is why she continues to get acting work.
Sharon is jealous. And nobody wants to hear it.
Sharon Stone has very little talent, and now that she is a middle aged woman she is not being cast because she was usually cast as a sex pot.
Jennifer Lopez is headed in the same route. That is why young actresses fight so hard not to be typed as only sexy.
Meryl Streep started her career in formidable roles, and she is a real actress. While Sharon Stone was never a serious actress in the first place, and should not be complaining now.
She looks like SJ Parker after photoshop treatment.
@ Lisa: Well said.
I think it boils down to plain jealousy. Stone would kill for the career and the respect of her peers which Meryl has.
But hey, she’s a smart woman and she knew that her comments would get a reaction; hopefully some acting jobs will come of all of this.
Meryl Streep is ‘working so much’ because she’s a good actress. Sharon, conversely, is not ‘working so much’ because she is not a good actress. But read again the quote, ‘My love and support for what she represents for women right now is extraordinarily important’, i.e., it is Sharon’s love and support that is extraordinarily important and not what Ms. Streep represents for women? What a megalomaniac.
I know that it is normal for her age, but if you are used to pics who are photoshopped to the limit, then that last picture of Sharon scares the hell out of you.
I call Sharon out on claiming Meryl is a friend. I doubt Meryl knows who Sharon is beyond a vague recollection that she once was in some movies 20 years ago.
The only talent that Sharon Stone has is opening her legs. That’s how she has gotten most of her screen roles, but now, at her age, directors and producers have a more attractive and younger selection of starlets. Stone can’t sell a film anymore.
I assume the headline said “It’s Sharon Stone!” after a string of people asked why Sigourney Weaver was on the cover?
@ Phowie
Hah!!!! You nailed the most revealing little nugget in her statement.
Stone considers her opinions “extraordinarily important.”
But I think that almost nobody enjoys Streep in a political sense i.e. what she “represents” for women. People pay to see her movies because she picks great projects and entertains with intelligence, humor, and consummate skill.
I don’t see how there’s any other way to interpret her comments other than she’s a royal beyotch.
I agree she’s incredibly jealous because Meryl has had such a long and successful career, and Sharon’s fizzled a long time ago. Her comments were almost like her trying to convince herself of why that happened. What she needs to realize is that it has to do with talent.
That photo on the cover doesnt even look like Sharon Stone! It reminds me of Lauren Hutton.
@Victoria—That is exactly what I was scrolling down to post! It’s obvious the Photoshop retoucher went tooooo farrrr.
“It’s Sharon Stone”
Who cares.
No fillers, botox or surgery, huh? Who needs it when you have Photoshop like that cover? She didn’t even look like that when she was 20!
Interesting. BUt who is on that cover??? Haha
She tries too hard to convey that she is smart and we are not.
Meryl Streep is an artist to whom Sharon Stone cannot hope to compare. Anyone can spread their legs and get attention (if that’s all they want). Serious actors (or any professional for that matter) want to be respected and desired for their talent and skills. From the first time I saw MS in KramerVsKramer I knew she was an artist and even if she hadn’t become mainstream I would have gone to see her films because she is brilliant. I have not seen any SS films mainly because the one thing I heard to recommend her work had to do with an exposed crotch shot and I was grossed out and a little embarrassed by her immodesty. Beauty is only skin deep and with all the cosmetic procedures available now, even that can be faked. True artists study, practice and perfect their craft relying on that skill set to obtain work. Just like any other professional.
Sharon stone is in trouble!!!! I really pity the poor woman, how can she survive after reading all these negative comments abt her…**sad**
I think you people misunderstood her first comments.
That can not be Sharon Stone on the cover, it looks NOTHING like her, at any age. Kinda reminds me of a younger photo of Donna Mills.
Jessica Biel Take note: no one is ever “too beautiful” and look at what happened to Stone’s career when she started to believe the hype.
Stone has always needed to shut up. She is an idiot. Even if she meant to compliment Streep, and I don’t believe she did, then If she doesn’t know better than to say “meryl is beautiful” when that is all she meant, then she is a bigger idiot than I ever gave her credit for.
whose with me? Is she too stupid to realize that (after all these years and so much press for the dumb things she says) that how you say things means as much as what you say?
@juiceinla – I agree – why couldn’t she have said “Meryl is beautiful AND women relate to her.” Sharon’s comments suggest she thinks it’s either/or.
It always amazes me too, that after decades in show business and probably hundreds of interviews, celebrities say things like this…to the PRESS!!! It’s not like a private conversation, it’s going to be published and out there.
@Lolabella, you’re probably right – it gets her attention.
Well, we shouldn’t harp on her too much about Meryl. Northern CA just had a 6.5 earthquake so Sharon should be releasing a statement saying it’s bad karma for being a bunch of terrible human beings.
She’s the Megan Fox of the ’80s (since she’s not really relevant anymore).
it is sad to be a woman of a certain age and realize you made serious mistakes when choosing the course of your career. my belief is that if you have talent there is no need to degrade yourself (i.e., take your clothes off, etc.)blow people away with your talent not your T&A. Even if you are not successful in the biz at least you can be proud of your accomplishments and not cringe when photos surface ten years from now (as another “actress/model” mentioned on this site can attest). There’s an old saying: if you’re willing to sell yourself, we’ve already established what you are, now we’re just haggling about the price.
I get that most of you are simply venting your opinions about Stone vs. Streep, but c’mon, people, Stone’s original comments have to be yanked out of context and completely truncated to be even faintly rude. Was the magazine photo photoshopped within an inch of it’s life? Of course. It’s a freakin’ magazine cover, fercryinoutloud! Is the unretouched picture below the image of an actual 50+year-old woman? Yup. That’s what fine lines look like. Seen ’em before. Got ’em myself. You folks need to seriously get over yourselves. Bring on the flames.
A lot of people (including the original poster and just about everyone on this board) DID take her comments as rude and you shouldn’t have.
Sharon Stone is insane but I doubt she was trying to be rude.
Meryl Streep isn’t “beautiful” in the traditional sense. I would never call Meryl Streep beautiful. The only movie I’ve seen her in where she looked really beautiful was the Devil Wears Prada. Otherwise, she’s got a very plain face but oodles of talent and charisma.
Her talent and charisma are what make her a beautiful person. But she does look like an unmade bed. It’s not an insult it’s just a plain fact.
And from what I’m reading here, most of you are trying too hard to be politically correct.
Who the fuck is that on the cover?
Her ‘publicist agrees…” um…duh!
Give it up, Sharon. you were called out.
meryl streep is getting lots of work because she is the BEST freaking actress in the WORLD and we LOVE her! we meaning EVERYONE!
i think she is beautiful. she has beautiful skin, gorgeous exotic eyes, a lovely mouth, unusual and interesting fine nose and great bone structure.
PLUS the TRUE beauty of her inner spirit lighting it all up.
sharon stone is OK. she kinda tried too hard for the sex symbol thing. not a lot of range there, but she’s good. should never have made the unmade bed comment. no doubt she regrets it like mad.
Meryl Streep looks similar to Paris Hilton to me -when she was younger. I think she is attractive. Better than average.
Sharon Stone says some pretty snide things but I have to admit, she still looks amazing. I think it’s a shame her career has tanked. She was a pretty good actress. Amazing in Casino and Basic Instinct. Maybe it’s more her personality &attitude and not her age that has cost her roles? She just comes off as so full of herself. Meryl comes off as much kinder and down to earth and that’s why she continues to get roles.
Sharon Stone is much prettier than horsed faced Jessica Biel. Stone has never made comments about being , “too beautiful.” She’s not that stupid and arrogant.
Joke’s on you Sharon, your opinion’s of no consequence because Meryl is Queen!
That cover is so retouched I thought it was Madonna.
Actually, I think both Meryl and Sharon are beautiful in what society thinks is conventional and ideal (i.e., blond, white women). As someone else said, Meryl is has more talent in her pinky then Sharon does. Sharon’s not a bad actress, she’s just limited. I don’t think her doing nude scene takes away from what little acting ability she has (then again, I’m not hung up about nudity).
I’ve read both articles and commented on the last(read it,its kick ass) but the thing i still don’t understand is how she thinks Meryl looks “average”. Are you shitting me? Who the fuck do you know that is as gorgous as MARY LOUISE STREEP,Um lets see no one!Meryl “plays” relatable characters, yes that kinda her thing. Great actresses can make people relate and feel the way the actress is acting. For example In Bridges of Madison county i cry when she is crying, i cry because i can feel her pain radiated in the movie. In anything sharon stones done, not so much. And another thing that gets me is Sharon says “Meryl looks like an unmade bed, and that’s what I look like. To me, that looks true.” Um im sorry anything that relates you to looking anything like Meryl is indeed FALSE!! I think that maybe when she refered to Meryl as an unmade bed she was talking about herself, can you not see her nasty wrinkles. Sharon is younger the Meryl and looks about ten years older. Only that age is masked by Sharons ablity to be a fire crotch. Anyone who doesnt think that Sharon is a whore after her apology is retarded and needs to have a reality check. Sharon is a dicklick and deserves to have everyone of the horrabliy amasing insults said to her fugly facee.
I will end this with, mess with the ALL MIGHTY MERYL AND YOU’LL GET BURNEDDD!!
Well, I love Sharon Stone, and especially loved her in Casino. She is a wonderful actress, dresses hot, and I am sorry she fell so ill. Bravo for her at any age!!!
I like Sharon Stone and I think she is a very under rated actress. I agree Meryl is a good actress but she is very conceited and full of herself.
