Ellen DeGeneres is quitting show business after her Netflix standup special

Unpopular opinion, perhaps, but I think Ellen DeGeneres absolutely could have made a major comeback at some point. It’s just that her attempted comeback this year hasn’t worked, and now she’s probably going to pack it in for good. The last season of her talk show – 2021-22 – collapsed under the weight of all of the accusations against Ellen and her producers. I believed many of those accusations, that Ellen had fostered a toxic workplace and that producers abused their authority and that many people hated working there. After the show ended in 2022, Ellen went away for a couple of years, then she decided to come back to standup. She filmed some of her shows for Netflix comedy specials and I’m not sure there’s much of an appetite for them, given the subject matter. The subject is: Ellen on the back foot, trying to make jokes about how people thought she was mean, and they were being mean to her or something. It wasn’t even a pivot, nor was it funny, probably because she’s still trying to process what the hell happened. Well, she’s done with all of that, it seems:

Ellen DeGeneres said during a recent stop on her “Ellen’s Last Stand…Up” tour that she is done with fame once she plays her final shows, which will be filmed for a new Netflix special (via People and SFGate). During the audience Q&A part of the show at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa, one fan asked if DeGeneres would return to movies after the tour ended or perhaps try her hand at Broadway.

“Um, no,” DeGeneres answered matter-of-factly. “This is the last time you’re going to see me. After my Netflix special, I’m done.”

Another fan pushed DeGeneres to once again voice the character Dory from Pixar’s “Finding Nemo” and “Finding Dory,” but DeGeneres responded: “No, I’m going bye-bye, remember.”

DeGeneres kicked off the “Ellen’s Last Stand…Up” tour earlier this year and recently canceled four dates on the lineup. She’s been using the shows to address the misconduct accusations that hit as “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” was coming to an end after a nearly 20-year run.

The talk show ended amid a series of reports detailing allegations of racism, sexual misconduct and intimidation behind the scenes. Variety also reported on crew members’ frustrations with how the production handled compensation during the COVID pandemic. DeGeneres gave an on-air apology and three producers were fired after WarnerMedia conducted an internal investigation.

My question: if Ellen is, as I said, still processing what happened over the past four years, why did she even attempt this standup comeback at all? Why not wait and go to therapy and figure out what’s next and really think about it? She still has tons of A-list friends and she still has fans. People would have loved to see her stage a real comeback after she grew and became a better person. Oh well.

    Bye Ellen. Bye.

I believe in giving people multiple chances, but if you refuse to acknowledge you are the problem and won’t make an effort to change, then I’m done. You can’t continue to be harmful and expect my support – go be mean and rich at home.

    • Barbiem says:

      Exactly
She acts like a huge victim and doesn’t acknowledge her role at all.

      1000%

Bish, bye. When you take your mean ass away from the spotlight forever, make sure you stay gone.

  2. Kelly says:

Shades of Nixon..you don’t have Ellen to kick around any more, because, gentlemen, this is my last press conference.”

    Such a victim. Yep, bye.

well I’ll be quitting Netflix after the Ellen special…..bc rumor has it that Joe Rogan is getting a standup special on Netflix this year too and I’m sick of justifying my subscription when so many terrible ‘comedians’ are getting huge payday’s from our subscription fees.

*** check out the 6-part documentary ‘Sprint’ primarily focused on the sprinters that run the 100 & 200m dash…it’s been so good and our little fam is really pumped to watch the track and field events at the Olympics this year!

Tots and pears, a bushel full of tots and pears for Ellen, bless her heart.

She is a poster child for “when people show you who they are the first time, believe them.”

  5. Jill says:

Yeah…sounds like she’s throwing a little sh*t fit. If she wants to go away and be done with it all, that’s her right and I hope she’s happy. The way she comes off here though, makes it sound like she’s a little pissy that she couldn’t spin her way out of the mess she created and is taking her toys and leaving.

Goodbye Ellen don’t let the door hit you in the buttocks on the way out. Maybe learn to treat employees with kindness and respect. Thank youuuuuuuuu!!!

If you want an idea of how much people are juat over Ellen, she’s already had to cancel 4 shows on her tour. No reason given (of course), but there were many tickets still available for the remaining shows.

Ugh, just go away and be rich! You have Disney spinoff money, FFS!

This failing “don’t you still love me??” tour is just sad.

I wonder how her stand-up gigs are doing. She canceled a few of them? Meaning they’re weren’t doing well? Is she getting any offers to do any other projects in TV, streaming, movies? Another talk show? I think her decision to quit is that no one is interested in working with her. Couple that with accusations of being a friend of Diddy’s — she got heckled by some for that association. Anyway, I think it’s less “I’m done with Hollywood” than Hollywood ain’t calling. I pray for Portia. With Ellen not working, she’s going to have to put up with that narcissistic ego.

Finally glad to see the back of her.

    Again.
    Bye bitch.

  11. JEB says:

Bye. And that’s great, she’ll be fine-she has enough money and doesn’t need to make more to maintain her very privileged, luxurious lifestyle with her partner. So she’s not going to be greedy and go enjoy life? Cool, thanks for not subjecting us to more of your crap. Bye.

I wish people were so definite about Trump being a “Hell, no” after he’s said and done far, far worse than Ellen.

  13. M&gan says:

Good riddance. The world doesn’t need people like her in the entertainment industry.
