Prince William flew solo at his charity polo match last Friday, interesting

Last Friday, Kensington Palace announced that the Princess of Wales would skip Prince William’s charity polo match that day. This is William’s annual polo match for charity – he barely plays polo anymore, but in recent years, he does this charity match to benefit a dozen different charities. It was notable that Kate didn’t go, just as it was notable that she didn’t attend the Wimbledon women’s final, but then she spent hours at Wimbledon on Sunday.

While I’m sure William was fine on Friday without Kate, the polo match would have gotten so much attention if she did show up. Alas, these photos will probably get buried by the British tabloids, especially since William took George to Berlin to watch England lose in the EURO final. Something I noticed this weekend, especially with Kate’s look-at-me appearance at Wimbledon, is that regular non-royal-watching people are starting to notice that the vibes are off in the Wales marriage. The number of tweets I saw from tennis people remarking that “it’s giving low-key divorce” was remarkable. It’s also interesting that the last time we saw Prince Harry play polo, those were some of the most glamorous photos ever, and they made international headlines.

I also found it notable that in Kate’s absence at the polo match on Friday, there wasn’t a big showing from William’s cousins. Only Peter Phillips came out, with his new girlfriend Harriet. No Zara, no Eugenie, no Beatrice, no Gabriella Windsor, nothing. The British tabloids must be so bored. They must be itching to talk about what’s really going on.

At least the wedges were represented. Lol. Cosplay much, PP new girlfriend?

I don’t understand why they didn’t get Sophie or Zara to help hand out the trophies to make it more interesting. Unless William has a side piece ready to promote, I think he’s going to learn the hard way that many casual readers just want to see pretty pictures and comment on what the ladies wore. H&M bring that in spades so he’s going to need to bring some glamour (or his kids) if he insists on trying to compete.

Last year’s polo match aftermath when Fk tightly gripped both of his wife’s arms to prevent her from giving him a smoochy kiss was excruciating. Both were probably keen to avoid a repeat of non kissing gate rather than add fuel to the rumours of an estrangement?

    • Gabby says:

Or that video where she went in for the embrace and he just grabbed the trophy from her and ran off. Good times, good times.

There’s power in information. Clearly the ones holding the cards here is the BM.

They know something is going on, why can’t they just say it? Get partial absolution from all the shit they helped caused.

Expose Will and Kate and the rest of that wretched family! Stop protecting them!

It’s crazymaking isn’t it? One expects the real story will out at some point down the line but why act this way at all? Who do they think they are fooling with all this?

    • Steph says:

Not only that, but the real story would bring in a hell of a lot more views. Which means more money. I really don’t understand the incentive to keep protecting them. It’s got to be some kind of legal matter or like the way (either ABC or NBC) blocked Virginia’s Epstein story for years. It will come out eventually though.

I have a question about the design of the trophy : who are they made by ? They gave the same kind of plush toy to William last year and it makes me laugh everytime. I lowkey love them.

I think she didn’t go because they wanted to avoid a repeat of some of the pictures from last year. the pictures were awkward but the videos were much more revealing – especially the one where William walks away from her and her smile drops completely – you can’t tell me KP hasn’t seen the video of that clip with “oh no! oh no! oh no no no no!” playing and they do not like it.

    • Jais says:

It’s just funny bc the video clips are always more revealing. They can usually find one shot that the papers can spin into a festive glance or the look of love or whatever. But it’s the videos that are the problem. The trooping vid showed a couple mostly ignoring each other with one moment where they looked towards each other and exchanged words. And that one moment made the papers 😂

That video (with the creepy music) was everywhere online after last years polo event. They can’t fake it so it’s better to just not do those types of events. Even the pics looks bad when you compare them to the type of iconic modern movie poster pics that just came out of the polo event for the Sussexes in Florida.

    • Gabby says:

Can someone please post that here again? It never gets old.

I would love to be a fly on the wall when KP staffers first saw it.

Japanese geisha made a point of covering their mouths when they laughed which looks demure and cute but also masks the stark difference between the natural colour of their teeth against the opaque white make up on their face. William is having that problem with the shoulders of his uniform.

    • Steph says:

I noticed that too. I think it’s the uniform over all (the blue is a really cool shade as well so it makes his teeth look more buttery too) plus the ultra white background.

  8. Agnes says:

Egg even looks dorky playing polo, something I didn’t think possible.

    • Roo says:

He has the aura of Stewie from SNL saying “I’ll do it” in that one photo on the horse.

  9. Amy Bee says:

How come William couldn’t get his cousins to attend the polo match? Is it that he didn’t like that they got all the attention for attending the garden party?

    • Dee(2) says:

Have they ever attended any of the polo matches, even the ones that he was doing with Harry back when the Sussexes were still working royals? I feel like they never came to those things, which is why I didn’t understand why people were making such a big deal of them going to the garden parties as if it meant they were on William’s ” side”. Zara, and Beatrice and everyone always went to the garden parties and Ascot it was the only way you got to really see them since they weren’t doing events like William, Harry, and Kate and weren’t going to state dinners and things like that.
