The reaction to the shooting at Donald Trump’s political rally on Saturday has been interesting to watch. I mean, I’ve tried to tune a lot of it out because there’s a lot of whitewashing of Trump’s character, history and his own dangerous and violent rhetoric. The outsized reaction is especially strange since Trump is not the sitting president, he’s a convicted felon and he represents the biggest threat to democracy, bar none. He should be defeated in the voting booth, absolutely, and I’m not saying otherwise. But don’t allow this attempt on his life to give people an opening to completely rewrite who Trump is and what he stands for and his actual history. Anyway, there was an international reaction to the attempt on Trump’s life, with world leaders expressing sympathy and offering statements publicly. King Charles has apparently written to Trump privately rather than offer a public statement:
The King has written privately to Donald Trump after the former US president survived an assassination attempt, Buckingham Palace said. The former president was left with a bloodied ear after “multiple shots” were fired in his direction at a rally in Pennsylvania.
One spectator was killed and two others critically injured in the shooting, later described by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as an “assassination attempt” that could be considered an act of domestic terrorism. The Secret Service said its personnel had killed the man identified as the shooter, with authorities still investigating his motives.
The King’s message to Trump was delivered on Sunday via the UK Embassy in Washington DC.
Buckingham Palace said the contents of the correspondence will be kept private.
It is understood Charles’s message was in keeping with Sir Keir Starmer’s conversation with Mr Trump, in which he condemned the violence, expressed his condolences for the victims and their families, and wished the former president and those injured a quick recovery.
On Sunday morning, the Prime Minister said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter: “I am appalled by the shocking scenes at president Trump’s rally and we send him and his family our best wishes. Political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack.”
[From The Telegraph]
I find it interesting that Charles didn’t offer a public statement, or the palace didn’t offer a general statement like “The King sends his best wishes.” I’m sure the letter is just boilerplate sympathy, but it’s fascinating that the palace didn’t want it on the record publicly. Charles and Trump have met a few times and Charles even hosted a dinner for him during Trump’s time in the White House. Hm.

The new UK prime minister Keir Starter called Trumpet privately.
“Good show, old chap”
I don’t understand why he sent a private message and then told the press about it. He should have just sent a public message. The Conservatives love Trump so I don’t get why the Royal Family would be cagey about this.
Yeah, I’m sure that private letter will stay private with Trump being such a starf*cker. He’ll post it on his sh*tty social media.
Have they managed to blame Harry yet?
They couldn’t. Harry can shoot.
@Renae – Very good. 😆 😆
It was the decent thing to do, not to mention logical. World leaders don’t like assassinations.
Will he write privately to all the victims of Project 2025 if Trump gets back to power?
So the news cycle is now dominated by Donald Ducked In Time being shown sympathy by various world leaders ?
Can’t wait for Charles to have his own “security incident” for sympathy points since the cancer news is dying out.
Maybe he was writing Trump for tips.
Much as a I despise the very ground that Trump tramps all over, I don’t approve of assassination as a means of selection and leaders really don’t. Trump tests that ideology though.
I cannot think of anything more useless in a situation than a letter from King Tampon. It’s pretty pathetic to clout chase like this just to add your name to the Big Story.
The King will just have written the normal blah blah blah, nothing of interest.
Or reminded Trump to protect Andrew, since both Trump and Andrew partied years with Epstein – and minor girls.
Just saw a very interesting theory about why Chuckles might wish to privately cosy up to the Orange one and it makes for interesting reading where H&M are concerned.
Flower, well, if it has to do with Harry’s Visa it will be awkward. Harry’s Visa was approved by Trump’s administration.
@Saucy&Sassy worst case scenario assuming the orange maniac was back staining the walls of the WH he can’t do ANYTHING to H&M legally, but we saw how Trump has in the past used them as political footballs and that is what worries me, especially as they now have two school age children.
If anything happens, many countries would be happy to receive Harry and Meghan, starting with Canada and France.
So he can write Donald, but never cares about Harry’s life and security. And doesn’t even take calls.
Kaiser, your commentary regarding “The outsized reaction” to the shooting is brilliant. Trump is pure evil. It’s not shocking to me that someone tried to take the former president’s life.
