The Twitter/X app has been delisted from the Mac App Store and is no longer available

Ahoy! There’s more Twitter/X drama on the horizon! According to reports, the Mac version of the website’s app is no longer accessible in the App Store, meaning that it has likely been “officially delisted.” This means that if you need to download Twitter (or, ugh, X) onto your Macbook to use as a desktop app, you can no longer do so. Instead, you will have to go through your browser if you want to use the service. If you already have the Macbook App version downloaded, you should still be able to use it right now. However, since it hasn’t been updated in over a year, it will only last until an iOS update renders it incompatible.

X (formerly Twitter) can no longer be accessed in the Mac App Store, suggesting that it has been officially delisted.

Searches for both “Twitter” and “X” on Apple’s platform no longer surface the app. The URL no longer works, either. Instead, it displays a pop-up message indicating that it is unavailable. This means new users can no longer download the service, instead having to rely on the browser-based version.

Some who already have the app installed reported they can still use it. Others, meanwhile, have reported that utilizing the iPad version on MacOS could potentially cause its own issues.

X has not confirmed when the app was delisted and has not yet responded to TechCrunch’s request for comment.

Today may mark the end of the company’s Mac app — which many users have complained was buggy. After Elon Musk rebranded Twitter to X in 2023, the new name was implemented across all platforms except for the Mac app, which had not seen an update in roughly a year.

It’s unclear if X plans to disable functionality for the Twitter for Mac app altogether. We’ll update when more information is available.

[From Tech Crunch]

I have both a Macbook and an iPhone and tested Twitter’s app out on both. I can still open Twitter from my phone and the app still shows up for me in the iPhone App Store, but if I go into the Mac App Store, I also get the error message mentioned, saying that the Twitter app is “no longer available” in my region. It’s not surprising to me that Elon “Always Looking at the Bigger Picture” Musk wouldn’t give two craps about keeping his platform available through all devices. I always found the app to be buggy, though, so on desktop/laptop, I’ve been using Twitter in my browser since the very beginning. I just deleted the long-dormant app from my Applications folder, so that felt nice to send to the trash.

In early 2023, Twitter revoked third-party apps’ access to API (Application Programming Interface), which basically killed most of the third-party client apps from running it. I had friends that used Twitterrific from its inception and were upset to lose it. I also remember TweetDeck, which let you view different accounts at one time and morphed into XPro. Part of me wants to laugh about how badly Elon Musk has purposefully run Twitter into the ground while the other part of me is sad that something that was (and still can be) a source of news, camaraderie, and community is being slowly phased out before our very eyes.

Twitter should be considered a utility—and regulated, as such. Elon is treating it like his personal b——.

    • pottymouth pup says:

Musk has turned it into a de facto campaign site for Trump. He’s also openly calling for insurrection (if there was ever a reason to denaturalize someone, this is it)

      • lolalola says:

Wouldn’t that be great?!? I’d love to see some actual consequences for his bullsh*t.

  2. Kokiri says:

Twitter was so good, once you found the right combination of accounts to follow.
There was no better place for immediate news, especially for catastrophic events.

It’s a cesspool now. He’s destroyed it, & I also blame Jack for cheering him on.

    Such a repugnant man.

Elno destroyed a valuable product, that could have been seen as a public utility by some, but like so much touched by billionaires, the end result is a loss for the small guys. See also facebook/instagram etc. X (in its current form) serves the bots, the trolls, the extremists and the conspiracy theorists. If you didn’t already have the app, you probably don’t need it anyway. Here’s to a little global oversight & regulation of this, and other social media.

  4. ML says:

Elon has been using Twitter like a dictator to attack people and spread misinformation. At some point, this was bound to happen. At least some of Trump’s followers are now going to be cut off from a viable source of fake news, which will hurt the former guy.

I feel like shrieking and screaming! Can someone please explain why no one has arrested Elon yet? This is actively illegal and obviously it can influence the election! So is this:

There he’s gathering info on swing state voters instead of signing them up to vote.

@ML This made me so angry when I heard about it and is another reason I follow independent media (never thought I’d get most of my news from YouTube either). But more and more, people are reporting these illegal activities to the US Attorney General (Merrick Garland – I know don’t get me started) as well as their federal, state and local representatives. I’ve always believed that the sole reason that Elon bought Twitter was to influence the upcoming US election. If you can never be a country’s president, buying/controlling that country’s Prez is the next best thing, esp if you have a useful idiot like 45. Instead of trying to deport Harry, the Heritage Foundation should be looking closely at this moron.

Thanks for posting these links. We have to keep exposing and amplifying their illegal activities bc when these issues blowup on sm, mainstream media is then forced to cover it.

  6. Rnot says:

The value of Twitter IS the users and the size of the network. Every time you interact with Twitter you’re creating value for Elon Musk. Every time you read a tweet you’re giving more power to Elon Musk. I realize that it’s digital crack, but Elon is posting deepfakes in an election year. Stop helping him by using his product.

  7. Catherinski says:

I’m pleased to see our Michigan attorney general, Dana Nessel, investigating Musk’s PAC for collecting voter data and misleading them into thinking they have registered online to vote.

And Michigan has joined several other states to investigate his AI chatbot for disinformation. 👍

  8. Hypocrisy says:

Well if the app disappears or becomes unusable from my phone and iPad I won’t be using a browser to open it.. that would involve remembering the password 😳

  9. TN Democrat says:

Attorney Generals: Please look into who helped Muskrat finance the deal to buy Twitter at a wildly inflated price and why he may be motivated to thwart democracy. Google Play Store: Please follow suit for Android phones. Tesla stockholders: He is tanking Tesla and needs booted. The people he appeals to aren’t the type who will buy electric cars.
