Stanley has collaborated with Mattel for a Barbie collection of cups

Forget everything you had planned for September, the world as we know it is about to explode. Stanley, makers of steel thermoses since 1913, has been on a tear this year getting consumers to go nuts for limited editions of their quencher cups. There have been stampedes, grand theft, and corporate firings over these things, and that was just for two solid-colored versions made for Valentine’s Day. Earlier this month Stanley partnered with LoveShackFancy on four floral-patterned cups, and I feared mayhem would ensue. What a fool I was. Little did I know that the mother of all alliances was just around the corner: Stanley has collaborated with Mattel for a Barbie collection of cups. BARBIE. (and one Ken.) There will be eight different patterns celebrating Barbie across the decades, retailing for $60 each. The cups will drop one a day from September 16 to 20, and you can sign up to get notified. There will also be “immersive” pop-ups in LA, Houston, New York, and London over the next month. This Barbie is hydrated.

Happy 65, Barbie: The drinkware company will be launching a Barbie-inspired line that celebrates the 65th anniversary of the fashion doll, the company announced Tuesday. Many of the eight cups will highlight a different decade in the Malibu doll’s history, one celebrates the first Black Barbie, and Ken is also represented. The new line comes on the heels of last year’s wildly popular “Barbie” movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

$tanley is raking it in: Stanley cups, meanwhile, have turned into a status symbol, with many fans of the brand stopping at virtually nothing to get their hands on the latest product. The company’s success has led to $70 million in sales annually, CNBC reports. Together, the two brands will launch their Stanley Cup quencher line this September.

Barbie Icon: The Barbie Icon quencher has a signature “bright pop of Barbie pink,” and Stanley says that this cup was made to celebrate.

1959 Original: If you are feeling nostalgic, this quencher might be for you. Representing the 1959 Barbie doll, this cup has the signature black and white colors that were in the fashion doll’s swimsuit. Stanley also said that this cup’s “pool blue and hot pink accents complement the iconic cat-eye sunglasses.”

‘60s Twist ‘N Turn: This Stanley has, “a soft, sorbet gradient and tangerine lid and straw combo,” the company says. The quencher shows the Twist ‘N Turn Barbie moving to the popular dance moves of the ‘60s.

‘70s Superstar: If the ‘60s were not for you, you can make your way to the disco with this nostalgic design. This Stanley Cup quencher is dedicated to the Superstar Barbie, and has a “hot pink and purple gradient with a pattern of gold, dainty stars that echo the sparkle and star-shaped stand of the doll,” the company said.

‘80s Dynamite: Stanley Cup also celebrates the first Black Barbie doll with the rich colors that she wore in her debut. With rich colors, gold accents and disco lights, the quencher displays a vibrant red bodysuit and wrap skirt that the doll came out in, the drinkware company said.

‘80s Peaches ‘N Cream: All the Malibu Barbies can enjoy the Peaches ‘N Cream Barbie-inspired quencher, which has “a peach blossom pattern (that) reprises the floral accessories and artwork of the doll,” the company said.

‘90s Rockers: Inspired by the Barbie and the Rockers dolls, this quencher has, “bright, retro graphics that are ready to rock.” In a new wave style that is quintessentially Barbie,” the drinkware company said.

‘80s Western Ken: Stanley did not forget about all the Kens in the world. With the Western Ken doll, children were inspired to take on new adventures. The quencher brings the doll to life with, “a midnight-black color and a print that mimics the contrast stitching and silver buckle showcased on the doll,” the company said.

I’ve been snickering all year over the mass hysteria that’s been garnered over Stanley cups, which at the end of the day, are still just water bottles. But this changes everything. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think Stanley has finally sucked me into their national human behavioral experiment. I WANT A BARBIE STANLEY. No, that’s a lie. I WANT TWO. The 1959 Original and ‘60s Twist ‘N Turn make my vintage heart sing! When asked what her favorite color was, six-year-old Kismet responded “Black and Hot Pink!” Stanley and Mattel are tapping into the core of my amygdala and it’s making me thirsty!! And there’s more: in the marketing photo for the 1959 Original, the bookcase in the background is accessorized with spaghetti poodle figurines. I have spaghetti poodles! Has Stanley hacked into my brain? Or my apartment? I’m sorry to sound so dramatic, but the very ground beneath my feet has irrevocably ruptured and split open my psyche so that I barely recognize myself anymore. This whole year I thought I was a Bubba water bottle girl, but now I’m having all these crazy, new, exciting feelings about Stanley. Not that there’s anything wrong with liking more than one kind of water bottle! Egads, I need a long, 11-hours cool, 40 oz cup of water that I can knock back from a comfort-grip handle…

They are very cute. I won’t go out hunting for them, but if I walk by any on an aisle cap, I’m sure they will go home with me. I think I like the black and white the best but the black/multi is so delightfully 80’s!

I kind of hate that I do like the prints and they’re cute. Dang it. Nobody needs a 60 dollar water cup.

I’m sitting here with my neutral cheetah print Simple Modern but totally digging the Original Barbie cup! Not buying it though 😄

  3. Digital Unicorn says:

I really want the black and white stripey one – I guess I too have been sucked into the great water bottle frenzy of 2024.

All I need now if for them to do a Star Wars collab and am done!

Oooh, they’re 40 ounces? I didn’t realize that. Tempting! Still, I’ve resisted and will continue to resist, I just don’t need more stuff. I have a few corksicles and some travel mugs from shutterfly (you can buy nice ones covered with your favorite personal photos!) and one of those plastic cups with the plastic straw from starbucks (which I heard are totally uncool now), and I try to use what I have.

My husband told me that taco bell apparently had free stanleys (or will have?) in coordination with a baja blast promotion, which, if I managed to get one for free, then I’d be pretty psyched, but I’d probably try to sell it!

I thought this trend was finally starting to die. I walked into my Target over the weekend and they were fully stocked (20-30) in the “Magnolia” collaboration Stanley cups.

  6. Suze says:

Those are cute and I am tempted, but I remind myself that I have a time-marked glass water bottle for work, and an insulated Camelbak 40oz water bottle for home, and I am good. I do not need an overpriced status symbol.

    But they are cute.

  7. Flamingo says:

I really love my Owala 32 oz. water bottle. I carry it around everywhere. And I got it before it went viral! The Stanley Cup is just too big and clunky for me. The Barbie ones are cute, and I am sure will be snapped up for collectors. But seems a summer too late for me.

  8. Eden75 says:

Cute and all but I have about 20 too many water bottles as it is and I refuse to pay that much for one.

Besides, I have the 1970’s Stanley metal thermos I can drag out if I really wanna be cool.

I kept reading the article and when I read Stanley Cup I was wondering what Barbie has to do with hockey. And I don’t even follow sports.
