John Rich: Johnny Cash wouldn’t be allowed in Nashville anymore, because of woke

John Rich is part of the country music duo Big & Rich. I listen to some country music but not Big & Rich, although they’ve been around for a while. They actually predate the “Nu Country” movement AND the “Bro Country” movement, I’m pretty sure. Bro Country is the male-dominated country music which is just about getting drunk and shooting things, all wrapped up in a flag. Nu Country is like… country music made by women who support reproductive rights AND drinking. Anyway, I didn’t mean for this to be a half-assed dissertation on country music, but my point is that Big & Rich have been around for something like 25 years. They’ve seen how much the industry has changed. And John Rich apparently does not like the changes. He thinks wokeism has come to Nashville and Johnny Cash would hate all of it! From Rich’s interview with Prager U:

“The wave of wokeism that’s hit this country and especially the entertainment business, that made its way to Nashville. So these artists are being told by their publicists, their managers, the heads of the records labels: ‘Hey, we know you think these things about America, that you’re against this woke stuff that we do (the don’t call themselves woke, of course) but we know you’re not for that, but hey, Don’t even think about putting out a post that pushes against that, don’t say x,y,z on your microphone on stage, no you cannot record that song because it says this.’

“And they completely just control artists and the artists only has two choices: Do they wanna go have a career, it’s been their dream, do they play the game, go forward and just don’t step on these landmines? Or, do they go out and hit the trip wires and light the place up,? And lose their record deal, and not get invited to the awards show, and radio won’t play them, but… basically erase their career. That’s what they’re faced with. Is there freedom in art in Nashville, total freedom? Absolutely not.”

He also went on to say that an artists like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Loretta Lynn couldn’t exist today: “If you’re wondering why it seems like people are pulling back and not giving you the full deal, there’s no Johnny Cashs, or Waylon Jennings, or Loretta Lynns, there’s a good reason for that… none of those people would have been allowed to exist today.

[From Whiskey Riff]

As Whiskey Riff points out, Johnny Cash is the wrong person to use if you’re complaining about wokeism run amok. Cash was very progressive for his day – he was anti-war, pro-prison reform and he was incredibly supportive of civil rights and Native American rights. Cash really was an OG woke social justice warrior. Loretta Lynn was singing feminist anthems too and she was always a vocal advocate for women’s reproductive rights.

But wokeism in the country music industry is like “maybe you shouldn’t sing a song about lynching people in a small town” or “maybe you shouldn’t step to an actual veteran like Kris Kristofferson.” Is that really wokeism or is it about begging people to act with some kind of common sense?

This fool again. 🙄 Just admit you know nothing about country music history and get the names of your betters out of your mouth.

    • Kelly says:

big and rich were part of the Musik Mafia movement in the early 00’s, which ironically was really about diversity. They had a black rapping cowboy, a little person DJ, a blue artist. I think their original mission was to bring exposure to artists that were ignored by the machine of major labels and they really rode hard on the coattails of the most popular member, Gretchen Wilson. Their movement fizzled pretty quickly because it turned out most of them made really, really bad music. John Rich has spent the years since whining about one thing or another to try and find excuses why he’s not as popular as Taylor Swift. In reality, there’s a ton of liberal country artists out there and Nashville as a city is blue. He’s just an idiot who can’t accept he’s not that talented.

    • Lau says:

I do love it when these idiots just pick the wrong examples to try to prove a point, they always fail ! Tell me you haven’t even look at Johnny Cash’s wikipedia page without telling me that you have never even looked at Johnny Cash’s wikipedia page (because I don’t expect them to even come near a book).

  2. Hypocrisy says:

Nashville and the entire state of Tennessee has become a cesspool of hate and a sanctuary city for Nazis. I think Johnny Cash would be proud to not be accepted by people led by hatred.

    • beff says:

Nashville is a blue city. Don’t forget that Garth Brooks also has a bar in town that welcomes everyone – and serves Bud Light still. LOL.

      • BQM says:

Yeah I was in Nashville last year and it’s a pretty diverse and cool city. Took in an awesome drag show.

      • tealily says:

Yes, but there are still literal nazis marching publicly in the streets there.

  3. Jais says:

Like what does this man want to say that he thinks he’s not allowed to say? I don’t think woke is the problem here.

  4. Kitten says:

Lol shit is so funny…dude has been in the industry for how long and he still doesn’t understand that corporations care only about profit–nothing else–just profit. If the music industry is telling their artists to keep the racism, misogyny and bigotry out of their songs, it’s because they know that those things don’t translate into ticket and album sales. Turns out that most people don’t really care for that shit! It’s not just the Wokey-wokes.

All these conservatives hating on free market capitalism….who woulda thunk it smdh

  5. Miranda says:

Artists like Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings were categorized as “outlaw country” because of their resistance to the conservative Nashville establishment of their time, which was trying to dictate what they could say and how they could play (see, for example, Johnny Cash refusing to change a lyric about being stoned in “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down’ during a live performance). I’m a lifelong woke-ass Big City Girl and I know this. So, you, know, maybe learn your genre’s history and STFU?

    • tealily says:

Right?? I was ready to agree with this headline, thinking he meant Cash was too woke for Nashville, not the other way around.

  6. Normades says:

When Trump used Johnny’s music at his rallies his family put out a very firm statement that not only was he not authorized to use his music but that Trump’s values were completely the antithesis of Cash’s. I would love to hear his family tell this douche bag to keep their father’s name out of his mouth

  7. Nicole says:

Prager U is all you needed to mention in this article. They are the online “Conservative” right wing Christian classroom for home schooled children. It’s people like them that give Evangelicals a bad name.

    • Doppelgangers R'Us says:

Yeah. I saw PragerU and I wanted to spew. They are working hard to brainwash the next Generation.

As someone who listened to Country music when Johnny Cash was a God of Country, this poser doesn’t have a clue.
Even Merl Haggerd would have told him to shut up. And Merl was never been the most “woke”. He was just good at recognizing stupid.

BTW Merl was my cousin and he and my dad could have been twins.

    • pottymouth pup says:

I feel the need to point out that Prager U is the brainchild of Dennis Prager is who isn’t Christian, he’s of the Ben Shapiro variety of Orthodox Jews that are happy to lend credence to the notion that Christian Nationalism should be appealing to Jews too.

  8. Neeve says:

Oh dear,I actually thought he was a decent guy on Celebrity Apprentice.

  9. Bev says:

Remember, this goober was on the Celebrity Apprentice licking Trump’s boots. Speaking of, he should be woke enough to rethink his foot wear selection.

  10. Grant says:

One of Loretta Lynn’s biggest hits is one celebrating the proliferation of the pill, which was incredibly “woke” in the 70s … and still progressive today given conservatives’ assault on IVF and rational family planning (astonishing to write this in 2024). If she wasn’t able to exist today, it’s not because of liberals — I’ll say that much.

Also, Jason Aldeen released a song that was basically a racist ode to lynching so I’m not buying that Nashville is telling up-and-coming country artists that they can’t say X & Y for fear of being canceled. None of that seems to apply to Jason Aldean or his fascist wife, or Kid Rock, or Travis Tritt, etc. etc.

  11. beff says:

Kris Kristofferson almost punched Toby Keith for talking shit at Willie’s 70th bday party. Told Kris ‘not to perform any of that lefty shit.’ Kris served our country honorably and wasn’t taking it. https://medium.com/@livinglifefearless/is-the-long-rumored-toby-keith-vs-kris-kristofferson-story-true-5f76db52ddd3 Not sure if you can link to articles on Celebitchy.

He also stood up for Sinead O’Connor at a Bob Dylan tribute concert at Madison Square Garden. Those men – the OG Highwaymen – were actual patriots, in the trenches and lived the life they sang about. These pansy ass bro country dudes suck.

If you’re looking for “good” country: Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Brent Cobb, Chris Stapleton.

  12. Bumblebee says:

Do conservatives really want to claim Nashville? I heard it’s turned into a city full of drunk tourists pedaling up and down Music Row. Oh, and good old boys throwing chairs off rooftop bars onto cops. Barring people from Nashville is not the threat this hypocrite thinks it is.

  13. Maria says:

I’m so glad you called out Johnny Cash’s legacy standing for civil rights. The man has countless “protest songs”. He actively spoke out against the KKK when they tried to bring him down for his wife appearing black (turns out she did have black ancestry and so does he). You’re absolutely right to say he was incredibly progressive for his day.

I hate when hateful POS who know nothing about the history or point of view of their supposed favourite artists, and bastardize their legacy in the name of hate. Gtfo of here.

  14. Amy Bee says:

Reading this piece if he was talking about the same Johnny Cash that I knew. Johnny Cash was as woke as they come. It’s interesting that he didn’t talk about Willie Nelson who still exists and basically contradicts his narrative.

  15. Is That So? says:

    Agreed.
The man don’t seem to know what he’s talking about.

Woke hasn’t shut out Willy Nelson. Why assume it would shut out Johnny Cash.

Also, Johnny Cash’s was in a battle with the KKK over his first wife. Johnny said she was white the KKK said she was Black. [most likely “a n***r”.

  16. Lindsay says:

The epitome of a p***y *ss privileged b*tch.
Woke/cancel culture are concepts not concrete actions.
And of course human beings evolve and begin to recognize the harm of excluding marginalized groups.
Johnny Cash was/is one of the very few musical artists who implicitly understood that more modern music, song and dance have a rich history of ancient tribal beats.
But I definitely don’t expect this pasty, bland White boy to understand this.

  17. olliesmom says:

I can’t recommend watching the Ken Burns PBS film “Country Music” enough if you haven’t seen it already. It is excellent and covers the history and origins of American country music from the early 20th century through the 90’s. So interesting and informational.

Being vocally liberal hasn’t shut out Garth, Tricia, Tim, Faith and Willy out of country music. Even Dolly has had her moments. Good music is good music.

  18. TN Democrat says:

Lort. Listen to their lyrics, you smuck. Corporate greed stuck listeners with awful, douche-bro acts like Jason Aldean and Big and Rich who lean into magat nonsense. Every act he actually listed were woke in some ways. Imagining Johnny Cash’s response if the orange menace ever icked up June Carter Cash the way he did Jason Aldean’s wife. (Johnny wouldn’t have stood by grinning like an idiot).

  19. babs says:

The podcast Cocaine & Rhinestones is pretty great and shines a light on how punk early country music was.

  20. Bad Janet says:

That is so ridiculous. They really do think this is a culture war against good ol country folk. It is not. We just don’t like assholes who either don’t see people they aren’t connected to as fellow human beings, or refuse to contribute to a better society. And that wasn’t Johnny Cash. He was an imperfect person who got better with age and I don’t think he would like having his name in this little sh*t’s mouth.
