Halle Berry: Blake Lively asked if I would play Storm but Ryan Reynolds never called

Deadpool & Wolverine, which now holds the honor of being the highest-grossing rated R movie worldwide, is a “multiverse” movie that references different timelines from the Marvel comics. As such, it cleverly incorporates some really great cameos and appearances from actors who played Marvel superhero roles that were made by 20th Century Studios. I know Ryan Reynolds has caught a stray or two in all of the Blake Lively/Justin Baldoni drama, but I still loved D&W, and appreciate everyone who worked on it.

Halle Berry, who played Storm in the 20th Century X-Men movies, somewhat inserted herself into the conversation last week. While doing press for her new movie, Netflix’s The Union, Halle was asked if there had ever been any plans or talks about her reprising her role as Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine. Halle responded by saying that Blake had approached her about it, but she’d never actually heard anything from Ryan.

Halle Berry revealed in a recent interview with ComicBook.com while promoting her upcoming Netflix movie “The Union” that she was never asked by Ryan Reynolds to reprise her “X-Men” movie role of Storm in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The record-breaking Marvel blockbuster featured the surprise returns of several heroes from Fox’s Marvel era, from Jennifer Garner’s Elektra to Wesley Snipes’ Blade.

“No,” Berry said when asked if there were talks about playing Storm again in the latest Marvel movie. “Blake [Lively] asked me one time — I ran into her at a Marc Jacobs fashion show — and she said, ‘Would you ever be in my husband’s movie as Storm?’ I said, ‘Yeah, if he asked me,’ but he never asked me.”

Hmmm. After hearing Halle’s story, my impression is that Blake shot her mouth off in some schmoozy Hollywood “my agent will call your agent” way and had no idea what she was talking about. I wouldn’t have complained if Halle’s Storm was in it, but I don’t necessarily think it made sense for any of those X-Men to show up. D&W director Shawn Levy is on record saying that Sir Patrick Stewart was never considered to return as Charles Xavier. The only two characters to return from those movies were Sabretooth (Tyler Mane) and Pyro (Aaron Stanford), and if you watched the movie, they had small roles that made sense in context.

My thoughts are – and please, feel free to let me know if you disagree – the cast of the Bryan Singer X-Men got a nice little reset ending with Days of Future Past. They didn’t need the resolutions or nods that we saw in D&W because we got it in that movie. There was no reason to include any of them in this movie beyond the goodbye bloopers reel that played over the credits. I think in Halle’s case, Blake just opened her mouth to seem important when she had no business doing so.

Very curios how the Simple Favor 2 press tour will go isn’t it coming up

Not really, that’s sometime next year. And by that time given the short memory of online discourse and the fact that nothing new is likely to happen, all that I’ll happen is we will hear the exact same things again. And again. And now I’m bored. 🥱

According to the director it’s going to be released on Prime and not in cinemas like the first one. I don’t think that Blake Lively’s ego is going to be able to take it.

When a movie is as massively successful as Deadpool & Wolverine (and it is MASSIVE) you can be assured of two things: everyone will get asked about it and everyone was “almost” in it. That’s not even a knock on Halle, that’s just the way these news cycles run.

I mean it does sound like they considered a million different possibilities. Blake may legitimately have gone home and said to Ryan “oh I ran into Halle Berry and she said she’d play Storm again. If you’re still trying to figure it out.” They didn’t even have Hugh Jackman until a month before they announced the movie. Lots in flux and zero evidence she was ever actually in the mix.

I agree though Days of Future Past was a nice last scene for her Storm.

I saw the movie and I was very much looking forward to it. But the movie was a hot mess. I know I am in the minority by saying that because obviously the numbers “don’t lie” but hot mess is perfect for a movie that has so much chaos jammed into two hours. And Ryan’s humor in DP 1 and 2 were good, but he over did it in 3. And if the execs are listening: enough with multi-universe – it is (in Trumps eloquent words): WAY over played – way!

I’m with you Seraphina – hot mess indeed. I loved the opening sequence then… wtf.

Well I mean Hugh Jackman played Wolverine in all the OG X-Men films. And those are the X-Men that Wolverine talks about in Deadpool & Wolverine – not the days of Future Past cast. And Storm is actually mentioned in the film. So it actually would have made sense. It certainly would have been fun to see, but I think Garner’s Electra is the character that Ryan wanted to spotlight.

“ Halle Berry, who played Storm in the 20th Century X-Men movies, somewhat inserted herself into the conversation last week.”

I’m curious about the framing of the sentence.

Halle Berry was asked a question. Halle Berry responded to the question. I don’t quite understand how that is Halle Berry INSERTING herself into the conversation. Was Halle Berry supposed to not tell the truth?

    • Rosie says:

Hi, @is that so? – No harm or ill intentions towards Halle! Just an awkwardly-phrased sentence. Nothing more, nothing less. 🙂

100% that was TV Actor Blake flexing her power to the Halle Berry movie star, Oscar winner. Blake needs to take it down a notch. Crowns don’t stay on your head forever. And Hollywood has a long memory how you treat people.
