Shiloh Jolie has officially changed her legal name & dropped ‘Pitt’ from her surname

On her 18th birthday, Shiloh Jolie filed to change her legal name and drop “Pitt” from her surname. That has been a surprisingly big conversation ever since, with Brad Pitt furiously doing damage control around the fact that his six kids hate his guts and want nothing to do with him. Shiloh went out and hired her own lawyer, and she followed all of his legal advice, including the California law which states that Shiloh had to announce her prospective name change in a local newspaper, which she did in the LA Times. After nearly three months of wrangling and tabloids feeding on the drama, Shiloh’s name change is now official!

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter Shiloh has been granted her name change.

The 18-year-old, who was born Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, will now legally go by Shiloh Jolie, PEOPLE has confirmed. The teenager first filed to drop “Pitt” from her last name on her 18th birthday in May.

Alongside Shiloh, Jolie, 49, and Pitt, 60, share five other kids together — Maddox, 22, Zahara, 19, Pax, 20, Knox, 15, and Vivienne, 15.

In July, Shiloh’s petition to change her name was postponed after a court delayed her hearing due to an incomplete background check.

“Unfortunately, the court was unable to complete the background check ahead of today’s hearing, so the hearing was rescheduled for August 19,” her lawyer Peter Levine said at the time in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. “Everyone undergoing a name-change request needs to have a background check conducted by the court clerk, and because of clerical error, Shiloh’s hearing has been continued to a new date.”

I hope she went out and bought herself a cake and some takeout and celebrated with her family. While I don’t think Angelina Jolie was the one driving Shiloh’s name change, I doubt Angelina is that broken up about it. I hope Zahara is still in LA for this too, although she’s probably heading back to college soon. Speaking of, by all accounts, Zahara just goes by “Jolie” at school as well. Vivienne, Maddox and Pax have all informally dropped Pitt too. I still wonder if the other kids will follow Shiloh’s lead here.

Poor Brad, who always wanted a daughter even though he already had one. 🙄

  2. LaraK says:

Shiloh looks so much like Angelina it’s scary. Esp in that last photo.

But yeah, good for her. I’m guessing the other kids will just quietly drop the name too and live their lives.

  3. Nanea says:

It’s a good thing that this is happening now, to remind people people what an abusive, alcoholic POS BP is.

Right before his new movie with that sleazy backstabber GC comes out.

  4. Jais says:

Congratulations to Shiloh Jolie, a beautiful name.

    I applaud this young woman.
When my abusive father was alive and I didn’t have enough money, I wanted to change my lastname. That would have caused a war in the family, unfortunately I was too young, and I was not independent, I had to let it go. Now that last name is mine, I did something with that, and that’s ok.
But if she can, go for it.

Remember when the tabloids were all parroting each other saying, “when Shiloh turns 18, she wants to shake things up by moving in with her dad”. Well she certainly shook things up. She was on the plane that fateful day and who knows “ what else” she and her siblings witnessed over the years. Not to mention the constant barrage of BS stories, about her and her fam, spoon fed to the gossip rags by her POS dad’s PR enablers. Maybe this change will give her some peace of mind.

Yay good for her! I am loving reading all the stories of people who have changed name their for similar reasons. People’s reactions have been funny

Yes we are all aware her father is Brad Pitt and that dropping his name doesn’t change it. We all do not have to live with hearing/seeing a name were uncomfortable with on a day to day basis though.

  8. Katya says:

The other kids should follow Shiloh’s lead as Jolie-Pitt is their legal name. Just dropping it socially is easy but can be problematic.

  9. ML says:

Hopefully publications like People will now write her name correctly.

Congratulations on keeping the name that fits Shiloh!

  10. Leah says:

Good for her! I hope she celebrated!

It sounds like she dropped Nouvel, too. Shiloh Jolie is a beautiful name. That said, there is a lot of pain behind this decision. I wish Brad Pitt had risen to the occasion and been the best husband and dad ever. It’s tragic, hurtful, and awful to have an abusive toxic father. Good for Shiloh taking whatever steps she needs to heal…but still, the whole thing is very sad.

  12. CLOVE says:

I am happy for her and hope this is the start of her moving beyond that abuser!
