Colombia’s VP Marquez: The Sussexes’ tour successfully highlighted tourism

It’s been more than a week since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Colombian tour concluded and the British media has spent that time furiously imposing their narratives on the tour. They claim it was “controversial” and that Prince Harry and Meghan are “embarrassed” by the criticisms, criticisms which were openly provided by “the palace,” according to the British media. But according to VP Francia Marquez, the tour was a huge success (it’s true) and she designed the tour to highlight tourism to Colombia.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s tour of Colombia was designed to encourage tourism, according to the country’s vice-president. A lengthy statement released by the office of Francia Márquez hailed the international attention the quasi-royal tour had generated and said the couple’s presence had helped demonstrate that Colombia was an “attractive tourism destination”.

The government release also said the tour had shown that the country had moved away from the violence with which it has long been associated and was now worthy of international investment and business.

“The message is overwhelming,” it said. “We will continue working to establish Colombia on the international stage as a reference point of creativity, cultural diversity and above all, as a country that knows how to rebuild from differences and is ready to receive millions more visitors.”

Such claims will only serve to fuel the view that the Duke and Duchess were used as “political pawns” to boost Ms Márquez’s reputation ahead of next year’s election, when some speculate she may run for president, and to divert attention from various domestic scandals.

[From The Telegraph]

“Such claims will only serve to fuel the view that the Duke and Duchess were used as ‘political pawns’…” They’re not mad that Harry and Meghan were used in a political manner, they’re mad that the Sussexes were used effectively by Colombia and Nigeria to highlight tourism, Invictus and various local charities. They’re mad that the left-behind Windsors can’t travel internationally without making horses’ asses out of themselves or being utterly ignored.

In addition to providing a tourism boost, the Sussexes have announced targeted donations to various Colombian charities and initiatives. Archewell donated new drumming sets to Escuela Tambores de Cabildo in Cartagena. Archewell is also donating to the community in San Basilio de Palenque, and Archewell is also “supporting the expansion of the socio-emotional Gym program at Colegio La Giralda.” And finally, Archewell released a recap video of their trip. This really is an amazing ad campaign for Colombia!

Stay salty, nasty tabloid stalkers. You’re not getting access and no one outside your island cares what you think. I hope Harry’s lawsuits bankrupt at least one or two of these trash tabloids.

Is the fact that H&M gave so much to the country the problem because it highlights that the “working” royals don’t bring much attention or give to countries they tour?

    • goofpuff says:

Bingo! The “working” royal tours are all about W&K’s vacation on the host country’s dime and how to get money from their citizens to cover their new wardrobe and jewels “for the trip”. aka Royal Grifters.

Its never about the actual country or its people.

I love what H&M are doing with the charties and how Archwell is showing its support beyond just the tour.

    • TheFarmer'sWife says:

How can you forget that the “working royals” give their photos as gifts? OMG, that is beyond tacky, but it gives real insight into how the “royals” view themselves and their place in the world…which is totally out of mind and out of touch.

  3. Maxine Branch says:

What a glorious few days this trip was. The Sussexes can take their charisma anywhere and wherever they land, there is a halo around them with their bright smiles and interaction with their host country. In addition, Archewell Foundation always brings gifts to leave with the communities.

  4. garrity says:

This complaint is utterly hilarious in light of the fact that one of the most common defenses of the expense and over-the-top pageantry of the British monarchy is that it *drumroll please* . . . . brings in tourist dollars.

  5. Inge says:

    I love Harry’s smirk when he’s drumming.

Also someone I know is off to Colombia soon and someone else was really worried about him. He tried to say that he’d be ok and he checked, but when I mentioned that Harry&Meghan were there it suddenly was ok 🙂

  6. Nanea says:

Looks like the ploy used by Francia Márquez to boost tourism via H&M was *very* successful, as so many Squaddies and -adjacents have already booked vacations, especially to Cartagena and Cali.

(… and it will probably result in another boost when The Night Manager II with Hiddles comes out next year on Beeb/Prime. They’ve be filming in Bogotá and Medellín, and have recently relocated to Cartagena)

  7. Eurydice says:

The British media never tire of displaying their stupidity. It’s like they’ve never heard of mutual benefit.

  8. Amy Bee says:

The British press is still upset about this trip. I love this.

  9. Dee(2) says:

That video is absolutely doing the job VP Marquez hoped. I’ve been to Colombia a few times for work and this is making me want to just go for me. What really comes across though is legitimately how much fun they are having. It doesn’t appear as if they didn’t have serious or important moments, but that it was all part of genuinely connecting and having a good time. And I think the lack of access for the BM is the problem, but also for the BRF it’s that none of their tours look like this. Although I’m positive we’ll see this copied if they can dust off the PPOW to go anywhere domestic or international, since they’ve copied everything else the Sussexes have done.

  10. Draadje says:

To be fair to the VP, I had never heard about San Basilio de Palenque before, even though I’ve been to Cartagena, so at least for me I have a new COL destination to visit.

  11. wolfmamma says:

What a great video for Colombia and the Sussexes. Well done.

  12. Lau says:

Man, Sophie didn’t have any impact when she visited Colombia earlier in the year. It’s really hilarious how they are completely ignoring her, she must be seething.

  13. Convict says:

Sorry for being O/T, but I can’t believe how much Meghan glows with good health. Whatever she is doing, she needs to keep doing it. It all looks natural too. Cf Waity Dolittle. Work and purpose outside of oneself is good for the soul.

  14. acha says:

LOOK AT OUR GINGER BOY DANCING!! He can actually keep up with Meghan, which is amazing, good going Prince Harry!

    • Barb Mill says:

I was wondering if Meghan was having him have dancing lessons for the trip.
I saw a longer video on twitter and he was really doing well.

      • Moniquep says:

Some of the moves they did for their wedding dance, so they’ve been doing them for awhile. They were so comfortable and in tune with each other. Did you see even the guys from TMZ were impressed!

      • aftershocks says:

Unlike his brother, Willy, Prince Haz has always known how to dance! 🕺

  15. TQ says:

Amazing video summing up a highly successful tour, shining a light on the wonderful energy of the people and projects happening in Colombia. Typically classy H & M to highlight the projects and donate thereafter. Haters gonna hate.

  16. B says:

The same way the left behind royals copy Sussex fashion and photos is how they could copy their work ethic or operations but they don’t. They’d rather demonize philanthropy as if that will win them allies or convince anyone the Sussexes were wrong to leave and pursue a purposeful life.

  17. Ennie says:

I’m in Mexico, and going to Colombia is hot right now, a lot of people I know are visiting and enjoying Colombia.

  18. Berkeleyfarm says:

Sort of OT, but I love the little girl with the pink glasses. I think it’s odds on that her family has nicknamed her “Duquesa” (Duchess) now!

    • Moniquep says:

She reminds me of the little boy in Lesotho, back when Harry first visited in his gap year. He attached himself to Harry like white on rice. Wherever Harry went the boy was attached to him. I believe Harry kept in communication with him for years, the last I saw was when Harry went back and met up with him when he was 15.

      • Beverley says:

You can’t fool children. They know on a gut level which people are good and which aren’t. And that boy knew Harry was good people.

  19. Lavendel says:

I could imagine attending a drumming course there and one of the beautiful fairs and festivals. There is certainly very good food and great excursions in the surrounding area. Without Harry and Meghan, I wouldn’t think of Colombia for a vacation. That’s great 🌻
