I didn’t put it together until now that Zahara Jolie belongs to the same sorority as Kamala Harris. Oh my god!! Last year was Zahara’s freshman year at Spelman College in Atlanta. Last fall, Zahara decided to pledge to Alpha Kappa Alpha, the AKAs, which count Kamala Harris as one of their most famous sisters. Well, Zahara is back at Spelman and about to start her sophomore year. At the Welcome Back Jam, Zahara and the AKAs did a dance:
College life suits Angelina Jolie’s daughter Zahara very well — she is absolutely thriving! The 19-year-old, who the Maleficent actress shares with ex-husband Brad Pitt, is starting her junior year at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, a historically Black women’s college.
Last year, she made waves during her initiation into the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority — the first intercollegiate historically African American sorority — which came with the revelation that she dropped her father’s last name and is instead going by Zahara Marley Jolie. And now, upon the sorority’s back-to-school festivities, she’s leaving fans impressed all over again.
As Spelman students returned to school, one of Zahara’s classmates took to TikTok and shared a round of videos highlighting different sororities’ dances for the school’s Welcome Back Jam. In the video showcasing AKA’s dance, Zahara is seen second in line, showing off her impressive dance moves as she and her sorority sisters performed their hip choreography.
I’m including the video below – Zahara has moves and she looks like she’s having a ball with her AKA sisters. I always wonder about these kinds of coordinated group things at back-to-school events. Are the college kids practicing during the summer? Did Zahara have to fly into Atlanta early for practice sessions with the AKAs? And for college marching bands, did they work on their arrangements and practice during the summer? Because I’m already seeing so many marching band arrangements to Kendrick Lamar’s newest songs, and it feels like a lot of kids worked on that over the summer.

I was going to say the same thing. She looks like she is having a great time in college. Hats off to Angelina because these kids mostly seem very well adapted and happy and we know Brad hardly interacts with them and probably only sees his biological kids. Also I know Shiloh is a big dancer and took lessons so I wonder if Zahara took lessons too. Although maybe she is just naturally coordinated
So I am Southeast Asian, and have been 100% impressed with how Angelina’s first son, Maddox, was given a nanny from his culture so that he could learn the language and understand the customs of his birth country. Angelina had the resources to give him that, and she did. Same with Zahara — she never skimped on making sure the adoption wasn’t a white-washing, but a true celebration of her kid and who she is.
To answer your question yes you do sometimes practice over summer, and strolls which is what they’re doing , are also passed down and you’re taught them as you join. Some strolls are known and have been done for decades, like the mirror and ivy movements done in the video, “snake” that Alpha Phi Alpha does or the ” shimmy” and shoulder roll Kappa Alpha Psi does( I know these have official names, I’m just not sure of them sorry for any D9 people )I love to see her having a great time at school though!
I did marching band in college.
Yep, there’s band camp for a week or two before the semester starts so everyone can learn the music and choreography for the show. Those can be all day long, depending on how intense the school’s band is. Some schools only do a move and then basically play in place for a bit, then move again, while other schools have pretty intricate choreography.
I’m so happy that she’s enjoying this moment and having a ball. My grandma was a Golden Soror with AKA. She tried to get me in as a legacy in the graduate chapter before she died, but someone blocked it. I still have regrets at not being able to do this before she died.

There is little need to practice before school starts. We learn these steps and strolling during the membership intake process and they are performed at meetings, member marriages, and gatherings throughout the year. You can see members from 18-80 doing a stroll routine.
