Sad news: the paperback edition of Prince Harry’s Spare will not include any new chapters. According to the Bookseller – who is probably getting their information directly from Penguin Random House – the paperback edition “will have the same cover image as the hardcover edition, a newly designed package and the contents of the book are unchanged.” Meaning, nothing was removed or updated, and no new chapters were added. Would you like this information to be given to you in the most tabloidized way? Congrats, the Mail’s Royal Editor Becky English had a new piece about how “no new chapters” will be seen as an olive branch.
Prince Harry is finally set to bring out the paperback edition of his vitriolic memoir, Spare. However the Royal Family is likely to breathe a sigh of relief after it was announced by his publisher that the book would not be updated from its hardback form, a somewhat unusual move for an international bestseller.
Unfortunately, however, its October release will clash with King Charles’ high-profile appearance at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa, the first time he has attended since acceding the throne and becoming head of the global organisation. The meeting will be held from October 21-25 with Harry’s paperback being published in the US on October 22 and then the UK two days later. Buckingham Palace announced back in July that the monarch planned to attend despite his ongoing cancer treatment as part of an Autumn tour in October that will also take in Australia.
Publishers Penguin Random House announced yesterday that Spare’s new imprint would be published in 16 languages worldwide. It will have the same cover image as the hardcover edition, a newly-designed package but ‘the contents of the book are unchanged’.
Questions had been raised as to whether Harry would, like many authors, update the paperback edition with a new chapter, particularly considering how much has happened in the last year. In that time, his relationships with his family [have] continued to break down, the King has been diagnosed with cancer – which saw Harry make a transatlantic dash to London to see his father for barely 30 minutes – and his children, Archie and Lilibet, have become Prince and Princess. The fact that Harry has chosen not to add to the revelations may be seen by some as an attempt to try and smooth over family ructions.
Spare, which was first published on January 10 last year, became an instant publishing sensation and sold more than six million copies, in both print and audio, across the world. It holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest selling nonfiction book of all time, not least because Harry became the most high profile family member to ever ‘kiss and tell’ on the monarchy.
However while the book, ghostwritten by journalist J.R. Moehringer, was a financial success for the prince, his reputation is widely considered to have suffered as a result. Many considered both the book and Harry’s round of equally vitriolic media appearances to publicise it a betrayal too far and criticised his version of events.
It generally takes between six months to a year for a paperback edition to come out after the initial publication in hardback. They can be produced and sold more cheaply, and are designed to attract more readers. Whether Spare will do this considering its runaway success as a hardback remains be seen.
They think if they keep pressing their palace-given talking points that “Harry’s reputation suffered” or “Harry is so controversial” or “Americans love King Charles and hate the Sussexes,” then it will be so. Meanwhile, Spare was a huge success, Harry was happy that his story was finally out there, he got a huge ovation when he went on The Late Show, he got a standing ovation at the ESPYs, and the paperback edition is going to steal the Windsors’ thunder throughout October and probably November too. Now that being said, I wish Harry added new chapters. I love that he hasn’t changed anything (all of those scandalized tabloid editors can suck it) but I definitely wanted some new chapters. Maybe he’s saving some stuff for a second book, fingers crossed.

I think it’s more of a “royal talking point” in order for them to “save face” , as in:
“See, WE made it so, by “exiling /excluding him, and the “threat” of losing titles enough of a “punishment” for Harry to “come to heel” and not publish ANY new revelations! It’s all OUR doing! He’s not adding because of OUR stance!”.

If there are no new chapters, a paperback version makes zero sense. I get that contract-wise, a paperback is part of the deal when a novel/memoir is published, but if you have no updated stuff to add, why the worry? Also, The publisher and Harry are still making tons of money from the hardback, so this pointless.
Unless the denial is aimed to keep the noise from the hateful British tabloid press at a distance, from now til the release date? We’ll see.

While I would love new chapters and updated stuff, it’s par for the course, unless you’re member of the royal rota that churns out books that are basically retreads of BM points. Not all hardcover books (whether fiction or non-fiction) go to paperback with new chapters. RR’s are big on this because their dumpster hardcovers don’t sell like SPARE did. Trix are for kids.

Harry and Meghan have been telling us since 2022 that the documentary and Spare were the last look back projects. Why are people surprised by this news?

Yeah they called them their look back projects, and other than Will Reeve asking him directly about his father’s cancer diagnosis at Whistler, and Jane Pauley referencing the Oprah interview to address Meghan’s discussion of suicidal ideation in reference to The Parents’ Network neither has really said anything about the family in years. Harry is absolutely still focused on the media side of it, but I think he’s gotten to the it is what it is part for his family. Meghan has CLEARLY been done for years and is polite in public when she needs to be.
I think the actual language was that they had “moved away” from look back projects. That’s not a promise to never move back to them, especially for Meghan who is still processing the trauma.
To me that means not to expect any tell all books or interviews for years. Doesn’t mean they will never revisit the events of 2018/19 but we shouldn’t expect anything in the near future.
Ummmm…I don’t see this as a reason to be relieved. I see booked #2 called, “Spared”, and I see it getting published after charles passes and William ascends. That way Harry doesnt “hurt” his Pa more but William is held up to the light. For the good of the country Harry loves, or just a book about being a Pa himself. I don’t think he will rehash his moms death or Meghan’s difficult times with the palace.

Obama recently released his memoir in paperback and no new chapters were added. Becky recently proclaimed Harry wouldn’t release the paperback because he was ashamed of his book, this idiot knows nothing. He added a chapter to the hardback after the Queen died so maybe that’s why this version won’t have additional chapters.
I was in our local bookstore this weekend and saw Obama’s in paperback and immediately thought “I wonder when Harry’s is coming out.” His memoir literally just came out in paperback and it was released, what, a year or two before Harry’s?
I don’t think right now Harry feels the need to add more. The way Spare ended up working out, with the Queen’s death being included – it felt like there was closure there. It was the final chapter – literally – in Harry’s life as The Spare. he has moved on. People mistake his lawsuits for not moving on, but again….that’s a mistake.
@Ginger: You make a good point about the additional chapter about the Queen’s death possibily being the reason why there won’t a new chapter in the paperback version. It also shows that the press was wrong when they said that the book was delayed because Harry was having second thoughts about the book after the Queen died. The real story was Harry wanted to include a chapter on the Queen’s death.
They think if they keep using the word “vitriolic” to describe the book and the interview it will miraculously be seen in the most negative light despite its global success and the positive reactions which Harry has received wherever he has gone since publication. There wasn’t a single vitriolic word in the book, despite my own wishes. He did far more damage to them by remaining positive and letting the usual suspects reveal themselves for what they are.
He’s had a lot happen in the past 18 months so an update chapter would have been nice. Maybe a little more incentivizing for those who already have the original hardcover, but it is what it is.
I really hope he’ll do another book once his tabloid court cases are put to bed and the best bits of those other 400 pages in the vault probably after Charles passes. It’ll annoy TF out of William and I think possibly there’s a little piece of Harry that won’t mind that.
My petty side wants all of that. I love how they’re handling things moving forward. Aspirations. I’m kind of at the point where I don’t want to know how much horribly H(Meghan especially were treated). I would love secret tapes to be revealed.

Popular books are almost always released in paperback because some people prefer that format.
They are cheaper.
They are not necessarily cheaper. I just bought a hardback because the paperback was not cheaper.
It’s cheaper to buy for those people who may want a hard copy (not digital) but don’t want to pay double for the hardcover.
Honestly, it wasn’t until very recently that I learned paperbacks sometimes have new chapters.
I think generally speaking the appeal is that paperbacks tend to be cheaper and are easier to carry around or pack when traveling.
It’s usually the case, but not always the case, that paperback is cheaper. We’ll see on this one. I doubt it will be much cheaper, but the appeal may be that it’s lighter to carry.
Personal preference. If it were only for books added to no fiction books would come out in paperback.

Hey, I have J.R. Moehringer’s book in paperback, one of my siblings has it in hardcover. Neither of us questioned the point. We understood that the book was well worth reading.

Spare was really good, but I didn’t need new chapters for it. It’s obvious he and Meghan have moved on. His family, not so much.
Because some people have made Harry and Meghan avatars for larger systemic Injustice and get angry when they don’t react in the way that they want them to. But I agree you can’t be mad at the British media for writing stories every single day about them and make fun of William for his weekly Daily beast column and then also not understand why Harry doesn’t want to add chapters to Spare.

I have preordered the softcover book and will be putting the hardcover book in a safe space at home. Would not bother me as much it’s the softcover got damaged in handling.

Harry and Meghan have both said that they’re done with the look back projects and alot of best-selling books don’t get revised for the paperback edition. Any new information about Harry will found out in the court cases. I think the book and the docuseries are good companion pieces. A lot of people prefer paperback versions of books so I think the book will do well. I love how everyone has conveniently forgotten the book where King Charles put the Queen on blast for being an absentee mother. Not to mention, he describes Phillip as cruel and not meeting his emotional needs.

They also conveniently forget when they are maliciously criticising Harry for his lawsuits, that W&K sued in a foreign jurisdiction (to avoid backlash), having a magazine closed down and people fired. I believe there were also threats of criminal proceedings by the French authorities. W&K never cared about the consequences, or their own foolishness, as to Kate doing her usual flashing of her nether regions in public.
