Jennifer Lawrence endorses Kamala Harris, she’ll ‘protect reproductive rights’

As so many male journalists busy themselves with defending the unethical behavior of Olivia Nuzzi, it struck me that very few DC journalists are doing much of any reporting on the very real consequences of Dobbs in many states. Too many states have passed near-total abortion bans, bans which have already killed women. There is a palpable rage among female voters who are actually paying attention and seeking out information about the steep rise in mortality rates among pregnant people, about the women bleeding out in hospital parking lots because they were denied care, about the children and rape victims who were forced to carry their predator’s child. Well, Jennifer Lawrence is getting involved. She’s been radicalized! She endorsed Kamala Harris as she discussed producing two documentaries, one of which is about abortion:

Jennifer Lawrence is backing Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race. The main reason, she tells PEOPLE, is simple: “Abortion is literally on the ballot.”

“I’m voting for Kamala Harris because I think she’s an amazing candidate and I know that she will do whatever she can to protect reproductive rights,” says the Oscar-winning actress, 34, urging others to do the same. “That’s the most important thing, is to not let somebody into the White House who is going to ban abortion.”

Ahead of the national election, the self-described feminist is producing two to-be-released documentary films that exemplify those political values: Bread and Roses, which follows three women living under Taliban rule in Afghanistan, and Zurawski v Texas, about abortion care supporters who in 2023 sued the state of Texas.

“As online trolls like to point out every time I get involved in politics, I didn’t go to school, I dropped out of middle school, so I don’t have a classic education,” says Lawrence with characteristic candor. “So storytelling is where I get most of my education.”

The women depicted in Zurawski v Texas, “who have gone through what no human being should ever, ever endure,” Lawrence says, similarly represent the human side of political oppression: “They put it on display so that it doesn’t happen to other women. They’re not thinking about their suffering. They’re using their suffering to help other people, and it’s heroic.”

The case of Zurawski v. Texas, which the state’s Supreme Court ruled against this May, began when Amanda Zurawski nearly lost her life as doctors were legally banned from removing her unviable fetus in 2022.

“Women are dying,” states Lawrence. The film, which she co-produced with Hillary and Chelsea Clinton, can “enlighten people’s idea of what abortion is and why certain people need abortions — and why it’s so important to keep lawmakers out of families and out of people’s doctors’ offices… These laws are made by random white men and they’re not made by healthcare providers.”

Lawrence hopes both films inspire audiences to contact their leaders, donate, volunteer — and most of all, she says, exercise their civic duty. “Take action by voting,” she says. “The most important thing that we can do right now is just vote.”

I love it when celebrities just keep it simple, they aren’t trying to sound like Aaron Sorkin scripted their political endorsement. I hate it when celebrities yammer away about “both sides” or actively spread misinformation and dangerous conspiracies. Jennifer Lawrence is like: just f–king vote, it’s important, if you care about women dying because of anti-choice laws, if you care about your reproductive freedom, just f–king vote. I really hope that message breaks through.

This is a good thing. I hope it reaches the eyes and ears that it needs to.

Good. I’m glad she spoke up about this and endorsed. Like I’ve said before, no one has to say anything about politics publicly if they don’t want, but dang, I am loving and respecting the ones who do.

Preach Jennifer — the more famous voices joining the Kamala chorus the better the outcomes for women whose rights and bodily autonomy are being taken away. Squash Trump/Vance and all the MAGA rethugs under your heels like the vile cockroaches they are.

I also like that she kept it simple and focused on reproductive rights. SCOTUS took a fundamental right away and now women and girls are suffering and dying. It impacts their partners and families as well. Aside from democracy itself, which is on the ballot, this is THE most important issue to me. We need to be screaming this from the rooftops.

I won’t ask anyone to comment, but most of the people on this site probably know someone who has had an abortion for whatever reason. I myself was looking at the prospect when I was pregnant with my second and a test came back with some worrying signs. I did an amnio and it turned out things were fine, but it hung over my husband and me for a week. The longest week of my life. We live in Texas. My son is getting married next year. I have told him that if and when he and his fiancé have a child, they should have a plan in place in case things go wrong with the pregnancy. It’s insane that we have to be having this conversation in 2024, but here we are.

Hopefully Harris will win, get a Democratic Congress and find a way to get around the traitorous Dobbs decision and protect our rights. We can’t afford to wait for Thomas and Alito to finally kick the bucket and free us from their insidious tyranny.

Mr. Bathory’s cousin just shared a few weeks ago that she had two ectopic pregnancies, which of course had to be terminated. All of her kids were IVF babies. We had no idea but I know she’s now choosing to share this because it’s important to her that people know reproductive rights affect people every day.

I’m filled with rage about Dobbs & I appreciate Jennifer Lawrence highlighting this. Every voice helps.

I read a comment somewhere today that said “I don’t vote with my uterus.” Well, honey I DO!!!

  6. lucy2 says:

Good for her! I admire her speaking up and producing the documentaries.

  7. ML says:

JLaw comes from a red state, Kentucky, and her endorsement and the reasoning behind it is highly appreciated.

    • pyritedigger says:

I believe her family are MAGA and she’s talked about that causing major disagreements which made her distance herself from them. I find that relatable, certainly more relatable than Chappell Roan’s bs.

  8. Traveller says:

Very happy to hear of her endorsement. It is such an important and pivotal election and those with a public platform can help make a difference.
    Vote Blue.
