The SAG awards are generally considered more low-key than the Globes and the Oscars, so there will always be some ladies who show up in suits and cocktail dresses rather than gowns. Although, to be fair, most women do attempt some effort of a gown, to mixed results. I actually thought many of the television ladies got it right – from Julia Louis-Dreyfuss (in Dolce & Gabanna), to Holly Hunter (I love her) to Kyra Sedgwick (love her too), there was certainly a buffet of attractive television stars looking good. But some of my least favorite fashions from the SAGs were surprising to me – they were women who usually got it right. As far as best-dressed went… well, nothing really stood out as totally fabulous, so most of this list is going to be bad.

Anna Paquin stood out to me as one of the worst dressed. The dress could have been cute, if she had worn it to the MTV Movie Awards or something. But it was inappropriate for the SAGs, and I just didn’t like the pattern of the fabric.

Michelle Monaghan’s dress was another one of my least favorites. Maybe if it didn’t look half-finished, and actually had two working sleeves, it could have been nice. But the one long sleeve with the hair and everything, I just didn’t care for it. She’s a pretty girl, though. She could do a lot better.

Meryl Streep’s dress, upon first viewing, seemed like a long version of a 1970s housedress. But once I got a closer look at it, Meryl looks kind of fabulous in it. She really decked herself out with hair, makeup and jewelry, and it kind of worked. I will say this though – Meryl is the only woman who could have pulled this off, even a little bit.

I don’t get what’s up with Kate Hudson’s parade of white gowns lately. Is she still in her Bride Wars character? This one – a long-sleeved, backless number was very pretty, I thought, and my biggest complaint is the bridal thing. A few people are making some noise about Kate “gaining some weight” but I thought her body looked great. You could tell she wasn’t wearing panties, though, when the camera did a close-up of her backside.

The rest of the Nine girls looked pretty too. I wasn’t as in love with Marion Cotillard’s dress (as I was at the Globes), and Penelope was in her now-signature black. Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman kind of threw down the gauntlet with a bohemian-seeming strapless gown and flowing, curly red hair. Love it!

Sandra Bullock looked pretty, I thought. The dress wasn’t amazing, but it was pretty and simple, and her makeup and hair were flawless. It was a good night for her:

I thought Christina Hendricks dress was so much prettier than her Globes dress. The makeup was too severe, though. Still, a gorgeous girl:

Sometimes I just want to shake Drew Barrymore and yell “You are not high-fashion!” She’s not. And she looks dumb when she tries. And what the hell is up with the hair?

This one really pains me, but Dame Helen Mirren might be my worst dressed. This dress was just hideous, it photographed poorly, and it aged Mirren terribly. She’s a beautiful older woman with a bangin’ body, and she usually gets it right. Oh, and that thing that looks like a wrap? It’s not a wrap. It’s attached to the dress. How ugly.

I like Mariska Hargitay so much, which is why I’m liking this dress. If Kate Hudson tried to pull this hot pink mess, I would slam her for it. But it’s Mariska, and it was her birthday, and she’s got a lovely figure, so it’s all good:

At what point is Patricia Arquette not on the worst dressed list? This woman… I love her, I think she’s very pretty in an unconventional way, she’s a wonderful actress, but Jesus, Patricia. Either fire your stylist or hire somebody really good to help you. Because this is a disaster.
