It’s still so bonkers that Daniel Day Lewis turned in THAT performance in Phantom Thread and decided to dip. After his brilliant, delicate, amazing portrayal of Reynolds Woodcock in Paul Thomas Anderson’s film, DDL was like… I can’t do this anymore, I’m retiring. He announced it and everything, that he was done with acting. That was seven years ago and we’ve barely heard anything about him since. Well, this week, there was some news. He’s acting again! He took a role in a film he co-wrote with his son.
Three-time Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis is set to appear in another feature film, seven years after he abruptly announced the end of his acting career.
The film, Anemone, will be directed by the actor’s son, Ronan Day-Lewis, from a script that the pair co-wrote together. Few details about the movie are available, other than it focusing on intergenerational family bonds, especially the dynamics between fathers, sons and brothers.
Daniel Day-Lewis, 67, will star in the film alongside veteran English actors Sean Bean and Samantha Morton. Over the weekend, Bean and Day-Lewis were spotted riding a motorcycle together on a street in Manchester, England, according to the Manchester Evening News.
In 2017, Day-Lewis was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of fashion designer Reynolds Woodcock in his last film, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread. In the same year, Day-Lewis, a celebrity who has long guarded his privacy, said in a brief statement that he would no longer work as an actor.
Ronan Day-Lewis, 26, is a painter and filmmaker. This will be his first feature film, according to a statement from Focus Features, which is making the film with production company Plan B.
[From NPR]
True story: he should have won another Oscar for Phantom Thread and it’s insane that he didn’t. I had to look it up because I justifiably blocked it out: that year, Gary Oldman won for playing Winston Churchill in a fat suit. That was so disgusting. It was a really bad movie too. Anyway, yay, DDL is coming back! I’m excited to see what this is, and I’m intrigued by the fact that Daniel apparently co-wrote it? Does this mean he’s really back to work? Or will he just come back for this and then retire again?

Looking forward to this.
I’ve been firmly in camp DDL ever since My Beautiful Laundrette and My Left Foot, and was a bit sad that he retired.
I loved DDL in those performances, but The Unbearable Lightness of Being made me his forever fan.
Me too…loved Juliette Binoche too in that.
This is the first time I’ve seen My Beautiful Laundrette mentioned in ages! That was one of the first movies I took my husband to before we married. He said it was a “film” rather than a movie.
I am so here for it! I love Daniel Day-Lewis! I am simply in awe of his talent. If I had to pick a favorite movie of his, it would probably be In the Name of the Father … Though My Left Foot was also great. Even in Nine, which was such a mess of a film, he turned in a convincing performance.
Seems like he’s trying to help his son get established in the industry. It could also be that he realised that retirement wasn’t for him.
If you’re gonna nepo-baby this is the way to do it. Dad can’t turn son down.
The Phantom Thread is one of my favorite movies. That many has so many layers and is so so so good. I need a rewatch! LOL.
Maybe it’s he oldest reason of all; he needs the money.
It was his second retirement, really. He once quit acting, took an apprenticeship as a cobbler, and didn’t return until Martin Scorsese came knocking for Gangs of New York, which was the start of the dreaded Scorsese/DiCaprio years.
He is one of the most impressive actors I have ever watched. He’s like a chamaeleon or a shape shifter. There isn’t even a hint of Daniel Day Lewis when he portrays a character.
