Martha Stewart calls Ryan Reynolds ‘not so funny in real life’

No rest for the wealthy! Fresh off the release of Martha, the illuminating documentary out now on Netflix, Ms. Stewart is back on the promo trail shilling another project (more on that later). Martha just appeared on the Bilt Rewards Rent Free game show, wherein she had to try and match Bilt Rewards members’ top three answers to different questions. So like Snatch Game, but with less makeup. Our queen brought the sass, though! When asked which three celebrities would be chosen as the most fun to hang out with, Martha begrudgingly included Ryan Reynolds, who happens to be her neighbor in Bedford, NY. Well, technically she first identified him as the actor who “covers himself up in his movies and you don’t see his face.” BURN. But then, with no prompting by host Ankur Jain whatsoever, Martha offered up more commentary, claiming that Ryan is “not so funny in real life.” HA. And there’s even more, enjoy:

When Stewart was asked what celebrities she thought surveyed respondents would choose as the most fun to hang out with, she told Bilt CEO and founder Ankur Jain, 34, that she was confident her close friend Snoop Dogg was high on the list.

The cookbook queen then said Reynolds would likely also be a popular choice.

“He’s probably on the list just ‘cause he covers himself up in his movies and you don’t see his face — Ryan Reynolds, is he one of those?” Stewart queried.

“And you want to know something? He’s not so funny in real life,” she added. “No, he’s not so funny. He’s very serious.”

Stewart went on to say that she’d pick Brad Pitt and George Clooney because “I’d like to hang out with those guys.”

When Jain threw Taylor Swift’s name in the mix, Stewart was all in on the “Fortnight” singer. “I was only thinking men,” she said, explaining why she hadn’t named her. “Taylor Swift is lovely.”

With Taylor on her mind, Stewart put Swift at the top of her list, with Snoop Dogg taking the second spot.

“Then I would take Ryan off it, and I would put in somebody else,” she said.

Asked by Jain who she would add, Stewart replied, “George Clooney, ‘cause he’s fun. George is really nice to hang out with.”

After Jain told Stewart he was surprised she doesn’t find Reynolds funny, she provided some additional context to her opinion.

“He’s a good actor,” she said. “He can act funny, but he isn’t funny. Maybe he can get to be funny again.”

Perhaps realizing the interest her remarks would draw, she added, “I’m going to get in trouble. He’s my neighbor.”

Reynolds and his wife, Blake Lively, 37, have a home in Bedford, NY, near Stewart’s famed farm.

Stewart took part in Bilt’s “Rent Free” game show as she continues her tour promoting her new cookbook, “Martha: The Cookbook: 100 Favorites Recipes, with Lessons and Stories from My Kitchen,” which was released Oct. 22.

[From NY Post]

Dear reader: my sincerest apologies: I’ve been so blinded by my anticipation of the Martha documentary that I completely missed the fact that she’s also releasing a new cookbook, her 100th. And if you noticed the incorrect usage of colons in the previous sentence, then congratulations, you know more about proper punctuation than Martha and/or her publishers. As for the wit of Mr. Reynolds, or lack thereof, he issued this rebuttal over the weekend:

The Deadpool & Wolverine star responded to her surprising comments in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, writing, “I’d disagree with her. But I tried that once. The woman is unexpectedly spry. She really closed the gap after a mile or so.”

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

Judging solely on that tweet, I’m afraid I’m inclined to agree with Martha! I feel like I’m missing some insider info that would make his response make sense. But one thing seems abundantly clear: Ryan Reynolds absolutely did something that pissed off Martha! Did he plant a tree in his yard too close to the property line so all the foliage is falling onto her land? Did he pluck a flower from Martha’s garden to give to Blake Lively? What did you do, Ryan?!?

Meanwhile, if you thought Martha’s opinion of her own documentary had softened since its release… you’d be mistaken. The NY Times contacted her for a quick soundbite, and she went on for 30+ minutes about all the mistakes Academy Award nominee director R.J. Cutler made. He chose the “ugliest” camera angle on her. He neglected to highlight how “Nobody ever showed puff pastry the way I showed it,” in her magazine. And why wasn’t her trek up Kilimanjaro mentioned?! Why indeed, Cutler?

Even worse was Ryan Reynolds’s pathetic attempt at a clapback, cementing the fact that he truly is not even the slightest bit funny

AND Hugh Jackman replying to Ryan’s post

    CRINGE 😬

    • Lee says:

Exactly! Apparently it looks like both Ryan and his wife’s carefully PR crafted images are crumbling down this year.
And tbh with his reply he proved Martha has a point.

    • goofpuff says:

I mean, its kind of entertaining to see all the cringy exchanges that go against their carefully crafted PR brand. Celebrities are definitely just as bitchy as everyone else 😀

    • Reverse says:

Yep, I think Ryan Reynolds is actually a pretty good actor but that’s it. He’s apparently super surly in real life. His mean-guy stories abound on Reddit. I remember a Reddit story about how a “civilian” with a tray of coffees claimed Ryan bumped into them before leaving them reeling with spilt coffees without saying a word or bothering to help.

He and Blake try to be edgy and witty in a dark, sarcastic way but they’re not very educated or well read or worldly enough. He’s also been very lucky in business, but that doesn’t necessarily make him smart; US celebs have the top suits from Wall St and consulting sector clamouring to set up deals with them.

Blake, in particular, is not very bright, to put it politely. And rather obviously narcissistic and self-congratulatory in that I’m-a-winner-I-hate-the-peasants and “I can’t pretend to make $20,000 a year”-Gwyneth-Paltrow way – at least GP will say that out aloud.

Can’t stand Blake Lively or her husband, but I will watch Ryan Reynolds in “serious” films.

  2. Ariel says:

I would bet part of her annoyance is that his kids are loud.

  3. CROWHOOD says:

She cracks me up. I know people get upset that she is out of touch or unaware of her privilege, and I understand that. I also think we have gotten to the point with people (neighbors, celebrities, politicians) where everything is stark dichotomy. The moment there’s a disagreement on approach or delivery the person is written off. And I think I’m personally in a season of my life and career where I’m deeply aware of how “likeable” women have to be and I relish watching a woman clearly not give a shit about it.

    • JanetDR says:

      Agreed!

    • MY3CENTS says:

I’m waiting to get to the Martha point where I tell it like it is and don’t give any F. I’m sure it’s like wine, gets better as you age.

    • Becks1 says:

This is why I enjoy her. She is not trying to be super likeable, I don’t think she ever did try. Is she elitist and out of touch at this point? Yes, but I think her appeal is that unlike someone like Gwyneth Paltrow (also elitist and out of touch) she’s not trying to be anything but that.

  4. Sydneygirl says:

We watched Bruce Almighty the other night and it’s incredible how much Ryan Reynolds has “borrowed” from Jim Carrey: the mannerisms, facial expressions, the sarcasm. I honestly don’t know why I didn’t see it earlier.

Pissing off Martha Stewart? I wouldn’t like to be on that s**t list.

    • Giddy says:

Agreed! Never be the target of Martha’s ire! I’m not sure what she would do…cover you with fondant, or block your view with a designer hen house, but it would be bad. Never piss off Martha!

  5. MsIam says:

I find both of them (Reynolds and Stewart) supremely annoying.

  6. Aurora says:

I’ve always thought Ryan Reynolds is terribly thirsty and overrated, and I might be biased bc of how unceremoniously he broke up with Alanis the minute he started to be shipped as a Hollywood heartthrob. The fact he felt he needed to clap back to a simple exercise of opinion from a woman old enough to be his mother, just cements my opinion.

    • KNB says:

Aurora, I agree 100%. And I’ve always thought he’s not the least bit funny, though he tries very hard.

  7. Mel says:

Glad he is being called out. He is not funny and never has been. He is incredibly rude, entitled and controlling. I saw him being a jerk to someone who approached him in NYC and I am so glad I never fell for his good guy act. Also, what he did to Tim Miller the director of deadpool was not OK. Wonder if that is where his wife got the idea to do the same to that Baldoni guy.

  8. Wendy says:

I don’t find Ryan Reynolds funny — having said that, I actually don’t think she was being snarky, I think she was saying that overall, he is very serious and not the wise cracking buffoon he seems to ALWAYS be in public.

OR she hates his guts…. yea, that was probably it.

  9. Feebee says:

His tweet made me laugh so I guess I’m in the minority here. I’m sure Ryan is plenty serious off camera. He’s built quite the portfolios of companies/ventures.

I don’t know if something particular happened or not but if she prefers George Clooney’s company, she can have him. Ryan didn’t come out and publicly shit all over Biden so George clearly has his unfunny side too.

  10. Digital Unicorn says:

Reynolds is just as entitled and annoying as his wife, birds of a feather and all that.

He got lucky with Deadpool and has ridden that wave as far as it can take him. He’s not a terrible actor but he’s not the big talent he thinks he is.

Glad that the Reynolds bad behaviour is being called out. He’s a snowflake who can dish it but can’t take it.

  11. Nikki says:

It’s hilarious how unfiltered and increasingly nasty Martha is getting in her old age. She’s the queen Camilla of the lifestyle world, notorious for ruthlessly f-ing over so many people in her business, starting with her original catering partner. I think Ryan’s tweet was very funny and also well-played. Good natured and with a bit of a sting. Calling her spry is code for old biddy. Minority opinion but I like him.

  12. therese says:

I know, but we don’t have many people like that anymore. Most people are spun cotton candy, and so edited as to give one a tooth ache. I enjoyed her “documentary”. It was interesting. She is interesting. I don’t know that she is cuddly, but she is beautiful, she wears beautiful clothes, what she does is useful to other people, and my goodness!!! she is tough. She brings beauty into this world. It is possible she was railroaded and imprisoned wrongly. I truly don’t know, I honestly don’t know about insider trading. Right or wrong, she handled it beautifully. That ship is not going to sink if she has anything to do about it. And who doesn’t carry a resentment or grudge if they have been hurt by someone. Her younger counterparts do. Let her be. She’s 83.

  13. Blarg says:

Can someone explain his response to me like I’m five years old? I do not get it. And I find it more irritating the more I think about it.

  14. Get Real says:

There’s a difference between being funny and being sarcastic. “Spry” is a shady word meant to imply aging.
Reynolds is just a db who got lucky.
