Accusations and recriminations are already ringing out throughout the Democratic Party. How did Kamala Harris lose this demographic or that demographic, why did millions of white women still vote for Donald Trump, why did Trump make such inroads with the Latino vote? One of the most startling post-mortems on the election is the analysis of the “Gen Z vote” though. Democrats have always, always made direct appeals to younger voters with the implicit understanding that younger people are always going to skew more liberal than their parents and grandparents. Not Gen Z. Young white men aged 18-29 voted for Donald Trump in droves. As it turns out, an astonishing number of white men under 30 are basically Hitler Youth, radicalized by Joe Rogan and internet fascists.
Donald Trump and his authoritarian vision for the country swept to power on Tuesday. While several demographics played into the Republican takeover, a survey of 120,000 voters conducted by the Associated Press found that young men played a critical role in his win, voting decisively for the MAGA leader.
Men between the ages of 18 and 29 turned away from Democrats in droves, shattering illusions that Gen Z—a cohort that statistically reads fewer books, comprehends less information, and predominantly gets their news from social media—skews more progressive than previous generations. The key demographic of young men has shifted nearly 30 points to the right since 2020, when they voted for President Joe Biden by a margin of 15 percent, according to the AP.
Millennial men also continued the growing trend of deference toward Trump at the ballot box. In 2020, men between the ages of 24 and 39 voted for President Joe Biden by a margin of 20 percentage points, according to data from the Pew Research Center. Even that result was a radical shift from the demographic’s politics four years earlier, an increase of eight percentage points in Trump’s favor from 2016.
A 30-point swing in four years is fundamentally insane. While Kamala Harris won other youth demographics, she didn’t win by the kinds of margins she expected to, especially given the campaign’s very youth-oriented social media and campaign style:
Despite the Brat Summer hype, all the clever and demure posts from KamalaHQ, and the promise of generational change, in the end it turned out that Gen Z wasn’t very interested in Kamala Harris. It became clear early enough on Tuesday evening, when the exit polls arrived and certain counties were going sideways for Democrats, that Harris was underperforming old man Joe Biden’s 2020 numbers with younger voters.
Back then, Biden won 18-29 year olds by a massive 25-point margin. Harris won them by only 13 points. Put bluntly, her performance among young voters was an abject disaster for Democrats and a troubling omen for the party’s political future. The youth gender gap that was supposed to favor Harris—with an army of young women showing up under the battle flag of abortion rights—never really materialized. Yes, Harris won young women by 20 points, but she was supposed to do better: The gold standard Harvard Youth Poll had her winning those women by 30 points just a few weeks ago. Meanwhile, Donald Trump won young men by 10 points, flipping them from Biden. And for the first time in decades, Republicans won young white voters outright.
The results confirmed what I’ve been seeing all year in my reporting, for Puck and Snapchat: Trump and Republicans have made real inroads with Gen Z. But not just with the “Trump bros,” who have occupied so much of the media conversation, and not just by hanging out in the manosphere talking to Joe Rogan and Theo Von. Sure, young white dudes broke for Trump. But Harris also underperformed with almost every kind of young person: white women, Black voters, and young Latinos, who went for Harris by only 6 points. Harris even ran behind Biden in cities and counties that are home to big college towns, at the University of Wisconsin, at Penn State, at East Carolina, at the University of Georgia, and so on.
Puck goes on to say that young people’s biggest concern was “the economy,” rather than social and cultural issues which usually drive the youth vote. I don’t buy that, but whatever. I’ll admit that I’m f–king shocked by these demographic shifts. As an old Xennial, I thought that young women would be radicalized post-Dobbs, radicalized by the cultural misogyny that permeates through MAGAland. I thought that younger men would either stay unengaged, or they would follow their female generational peers. I was wrong, and the Harris campaign was wrong.

Young women don’t fully understand what it’s like not to have rights or power over their own bodies because they’ve always had it, and are ignorant of the hard work previous generations of women had to do to get that. Young white men see their privilege eroding, their ability to say and do whatever they want without consequences, and women having higher standards that they’d actually have to work to meet – they don’t want to have to do any of that. They want their privilege unearned, and they want women to feel lucky to be with them.
White women are in for a rude awakening. Nick Fuentes has already posted “Your body. My choice.” on X.
@snideyeense – exactly this. The backlash against women always found its footing in mediocre white men but now, through social media indoctrination young men, especially young white men, hate and want to control women to a startling degree…
the zoomers think that the states will decide on abortion and that there will be no national abortion ban. oddly even zoomed women in red states seemed to feel safe with that
what I have learned about zoomers who are going to college right now is that they are either students who are very engaged in learning or they are the students who don’t read the assignment because they don’t think they need to have any depth or breadth of understanding and have no desire to actually learn things. The latter kids want everything boiled into a fun tiktok & don’t want to be held accountable. I have friends who are college professors both of whom had to fail at least half their freshman English classes because the kids not only didn’t do the reading assignment, they had no problems admitting they hadn’t obtained the reading material and figured they’d ace the course bullshitting in class. When told that the final would be based on info in the reading assignments, half of them still didn’t read the material and couldn’t understand why they’d actually be failed for not doing any of the work. The scariest part is how much of the refusal to do the work to understand the material that a lot of professors let slide. I see it in my nephews and it frightens me. The older one is curious, but lazy, shows idea of learning pretty much mimics Joe Rogan; the younger one is majoring in mechanical engineering and last year he was utterly incapable of having a conversation about anything but some sports and tiktok things (and even those conversations felt like I was talking to a 9 year old) so I’ve been riding him about the need to actually put an effort into learning about the world around him even more than his parents. My friends have kids in the same age range as my nephews and, thankfully, they are more engaged in learning but from what I’m hearing from friends it sounds like zoomers 18-25, especially the guys, are evenly split between those who actually try to learn and think critically and those who seem to emulate a Joe Rogan mentality
Harris received 13 million fewer votes than Biden. White women were a huge problem.
I think this is a large part of it. I also think that for a lot of these people, they might not remember the first Trump term. Like if they’re 20 or 22, they were 16-18 when Biden was elected, and then 12-14 when Trump was elected. They probably didn’t pay that much attention the first time around to the craziness, or they don’t understand why climate agreements are important, or why NATO is important.
the issue with getting your news on social media is that the apps work very quickly to set your algorithm. You watch one video about how great Trump is and then every other video in your feed is about that, or is anti-Harris. You can curate a feed that just tells you what you want to hear.
Ut’s terrifying to think that these people are going to vote for the next 50 years (if we have elections.)
There was something going around how the young voters didn’t know about the Access Hollywood tape, because they were too young, so I think it makes sense a lot of them didn’t remember or didn’t know how bad it was.
Unfortunately they’re about to find out for themselves.
And along with them not remembering what a Trump presidency was like, these young men and women haven’t know a time in politics since they were old enough to grasp it/hear about it when Trump wasn’t around. He probably doesn’t seem like an absolutely insane candidate that is wildly out of the norm to them because he’s been one of the candidates for all the elections they can remember/might have paid attention to. It’s like they don’t take politics seriously or understand that it’s not just a circus/form of entertainment/team sport type of hype event….but then, why would they when a literal CLOWN has been the loudest voice and largest presence in politics for as long as they’ve known what politics is? It’s like growing up on social media….they don’t know the before times, they have no memory or experience of them, so living your entire life on and for social media is just normal to them and not weird, unhealthy, or outlandish.
My son is a freshman at a university in Michigan. He has 3 roommates who are all from Mi, so even if they didn’t register at their dorm address and are registered at home, they’d all be casting votes in the swing state of Michigan. My son is the only one of the 4 who voted Kamala (and straight Dem the rest of the way). 2 didn’t vote at all and 1—the one my son was sure would for Kamala, too—voted 3rd party because he didn’t like anyone else’s stance on Palestine (or that’s the excuse he offered).
The kid across the hall said he wrote in “P Diddy” for President and showed a picture of his ballot to prove it. That kid used his vote as a way to create a “hilarious” meme. That was a very illustrative example of both thinking of politics like an unserious circus because that’s all they’ve ever known it to be, and living life for social media likes and clicks because that’s all they’ve ever known life to be. Using one’s vote to make a controversial joke with the express purpose of being able to photograph it and post it.
Men in their 20s start realizing that women are better than them in almost every way — they work harder, are better with people, are more creative, care more, do more, can see the bigger picture more. They don’t want the competition in the work force, and they are angry that women reject their sorry selves on the social side. And I say this as the mother of two young men, but fortunately for them, they were raised as whole people.
Yeah and a lot of it is about sex.
They grow up with music videos of one man being surrounded by 20 half-naked beautiful women.
If they don’t get that same attention, they feel robbed and they blame women.
Yes, that’s what I think. I couldn’t get a loan without a man countersigning regardless of my earnings.
I could only get a job from the ‘women’ job column of the newspaper. I got sacked for getting pregnant and they didn’t need an excuse, that was normal.
Looking forward to some younger people waking up.
Gen Z here (albeit from South Africa) and unfortunately this does not surprise me. Young men these days have basically been raised by the likes of Andrew Tate and Nick Fuentes, even all the way in SA. The manosphere has created a global phenomenon of abhorrent misogyny that permeates everything from the debates in classrooms to young men on dating apps openly seeking “submissive women”. As for young women, we’ve had the immense privilege of living lives that feminists before us fought for and we take it for granted. We think the rights that we enjoy are simply the natural order of things rather than the result of battles fought for decades. You have young women actively rejecting feminism in pursuit of “soft life” and “trad wife” fame on social media.
It’s the same with Gen Z here in Germany.
A steady diet of Andrew Tate’s misogyny and algorithms promoting hate of all kinds— coupled with peer pressure for boys, young people (many of them female) having no ambition and no goals, not caring about the environment and being hostile towards refugees.
It’s mostly them who are voting the fascist Alternative for Germany into the state parliaments, despite them quite often having left-leaning Gen X parents. But somehow our age group doesn’t seem to be able to get through to them.
They’re disinterested, and quite a few of them openly display hate towards the disabled, people who somehow don’t conform to their ideals, or people who don’t look like them.
Hi Nanea! Our government coalition collapsed today, and new elections next year. With our luck and the current trend to the right, I’m afraid AfD would also win
Young women need to remain SINGLE and not marry. Men hate us and they prove it time and time again.
This is sadly true. And the men don’t even realize or don’t want to realize.
I think there’s about to be a big Celibate Movement among young women TBH.
But they’re not and happily signing up for the “trad wife” nonsense.
I’m already seeing growing numbers of women on TikTok planning to join the 4B movement here in America.
I would go further and say young women might be better off boycotting men altogether following the examples set by women in other countries to stop ongoing civil wars. And the tactic worked.
Well, the 4B movement in the US is rapidly becoming a thing. 4B= No dating, no sex, no marriage, no babies. If TikTok is any indication, women are locking their kitties down for the foreseeable future. Getting IUDs or their tubes tied. Buying guns.
@n
It’s working extremely well in South Korea. Their birth rate has been plummeting so bad that this year there were no new children entering kindergarten. Schools are shutting down.
And look at China and their one child policy for decades. Their preference for boys has left them with a generation of men with zero marriage prospects. And a generation of women who can afford to be picky or don’t want to fuck with them at all.
I’m not young and have had a hysterectomy, but I am afraid to even date right now. I’m in a reddish area in a blue state, and I want to put NO MAGA in my profile, but I don’t trust men to be truthful about that (or even read it). And it goes beyond just no MAGA, but I would need someone who actually cares, actually votes to help others. And so many men just don’t care or actively hate women. 4B sounds pretty appealing, just continue living my life in peace on my own.
With the risks that now come with pregnancy, women need to be much more careful about having intercourse.
Men are not going to like having to wear condoms or not getting some at all like with the 4B movement, but that is what they wanted.
My 19 year old daughter wants nothing to do with the toxic white male population of Gen Z.
on election night, Nick Fuentes tweeted:
“Your body, MY choice. Forever.”
I shared a screen shot of that tweet on bluesky yesterday and someone replied that the boys at the middle school his wife works at were chanting this to the girls at school
these boys understood full well that Fuentes was not talking about bodily autonomy limited to abortion and that he means sexual violence & women as chattel
My nieces were telling me about how openly sexist the boys are in their middle school. It’s as bad or worse as what we dealt with in the 90s.
I am not American, but we never had stuff like that in the 1990s.
We were supposed to be equal. Of course it wasn’t perfect, but nowhere near what I’m reading here. Some guy going off like that would have been thought to be very weird.
I remember being in TX in the 90’s when Clayton Williams -a business man from Midland TX- was running for governor. He hosted the press during the opening of hunting season where it started to rain around the campfire, prompting him to joke that bad weather on the hunt was “like rape– when it’s inevitable, just sit back & enjoy it” And it immediately ended his political aspirations.
Those were the days.
The radicalization of young men online is a global danger. These vile podcasts are doing so much damage. On top of that I saw an article the other day stating that in the U.S. more and more young men are starting to attend church. And it’s not the love thy neighbor and help people kind of church. More like your wife should be barefoot and pregnant at home and you have dominion over all type of church.
This is not good.
How will that economy look to them when they are all paying out big child support checks? It is also disappointing to me that the environment (the very air and water needed for life) is so unimportant to young people. You also hope for younger generations to be less racist and misogynist than older ones. I guess, that hope is shot also.
They won’t have to pay out big child support payments. The MRA groups have been complaining about this for years – we’ll go back to the 50s when women who divorced would not get custody of their children, and would not get child support. That’s if they can divorce at all. Have a baby out of wedlock? That’s your problem, not the father’s.
People are still assuming that even with Project 2025, all other legal and cultural norms (like child support and paternity tests/responsibility) will hold true. They won’t. ALL our privileges will be gone. “Well, then, we just won’t marry!” Cool. We won’t be able to own property or have a bank account without a man cosigning it. We won’t have a choice. Look at Hungary. Heck, even look at Iran. That’s where we’re headed.
I wouldn’t be surprised if laws change to make men not have to pay child support. After all, it’s always the woman’s fault for getting pregnant (massive eye roll).
Big child support payments? Lol. Men in conservative states don’t typically pay huge child support payments or even close to the percentage they are supposed to pay. Judges make women accountable for children and give the sperm donors every excuse not to pay their share. The men are allowed to abuse the system and in many cases terrorize their partners to avoid paying for the consequences of their sperm donations. That is one the ironies of the red states screaming about the immortality of abortion, birth control and no contest divorces. Republikkkans loathe women and children and do not care about their circumstances.
I’m in a blue state (NY) and my exhusband has never been held accountable for not paying child support for Kiddo. I have told them where he is. Heck, one time he was in police custody in NY and they didn’t move on him (he owes 10s of thousands of dollars to Kiddo). Men have always managed to get away scot free.
as everyone else said, they won’t be paying child support (unless they want to). Divorce/separation and custody will completely be on the terms of men. This will be as it was in the early 19th century and earlier in which men are not held accountable when a woman gets pregnant out of wedlock (she will be ruined but, unless it’s a guy messing with the daughter of a well connected man, he will escape judgment), rape will be OK especially when done by someone with “good family connections,” men will be able to just walk away from wives/children with no responsibility and men will also be able to completely take children away from their mothers. Even the high society women won’t be completely safe in this; rich men who wish to avoid divorce will just have their wives committed. Domestic violence charities will probably have to devolve back to underground networks
This isn’t surprising if you really go into social media and the other online places that younger people congregate. While there are obviously tons of progressive, engaged young people, there are a lot who are unengaged, and even more that have been swayed by propaganda. Which is why when people are always like I can’t wait until this older generation dies out, the younger people are going to save us, I give them a little bit of a side eye. There’s just as many bigots that are young people as there are people in their 50s and 60s. The online indoctrination is something that I really don’t think a lot of older millennials and X’ers even really grasp. I tell my 13 year old niece all the time just because someone is pointing at text over their shoulder while putting on lip gloss Tiktok video does not mean that what they’re saying is true.
It’s definitely the social media. My 20 year old son (who is generally smart and cynical) was quoting Andrew Tate and tik tok conspiracy theories from YouTube. Musk’s takeover of X was calculated to indoctrinate. It’s working. These kids don’t read. This is how they consume (dis)information. And everything they saw told them women can’t be leaders and Kamala was not a good candidate. Nothing was breaking through.
Tate, rogan, most of tiktok influencers, including those working with beauty companies, books that glorify abuse, trad wives, this is their victory. They are uneducated and have no interests beyond the superficial.
Gen Z became like most boomers way too young.
You don’t owe your son anything anymore by the way.
If he’s this disrespectful to women, no need to be nice for him and cook him dinners (or whatever it is you do for him).
I am so sorry you have to go through this.
I agree, Dee (2): “Which is why when people are always like I can’t wait until this older generation dies out, the younger people are going to save us, I give them a little bit of a side eye. There’s just as many bigots that are young people as there are people in their 50s and 60s.”
A lot of this is how information is consumed – young people are heavily online – they don’t watch TV or read traditional news in any way. During the election I was consistently stunned to see videos from college campuses asking students who they were voting for – didn’t matter, male or female – Trump always came out on top. That was the warning sign.
Those young white men feel like they’re falling behind—that all the advantages they’ve had for centuries are being stripped away, so of course they want to go backward.
I have a kid at Berkeley and was so surprised to hear there were many shouting matches in the dining hall over the election. Far right republicans at Cal?
Absolutely! I found plenty of Trump supporters in what people think are the most “liberal” places. And why not. As other posted, if you have people who didn’t live through what it was like to face gender discrimination or race discrimination or social class discrimination, then they lack the understanding /experience of how bad it was.
The best thing about the Trump “revolution” is people will get to experience that. Maybe not so much some of the Berkeley kids as they are cream of the crop, but the rest of the ones at the bottom. Whether the country and people survive Trump and his MAGAs isn’t a guarantee. We may be worse off. The US may well turn into a permanent s**t hole nation and yes, like all the morning after news pundits have been saying, we did it to ourselves.
Some scholarship students come from MAGA-heavy regions. I’m remembering Brock Turner – from Dayton OH – who was at Stanford on a swimming scholarship & on track to make the Olympics before he sexually assaulted a woman attending a frat party.
@ MRS ROBINSON. oh yes Berkeley has had a Republican far right problem for years!!!! Milo…whatever his last name spoke there years ago.
Ps. Stanford has a rape problem. As in women get raped, an ‘investigation’ is conducted, the kind where no one is interviewed, and the rapist stays in school, the survivor leaves.
Why god why. This is just crazy.
Is women really that hated over there in your country??
And um maybe they think she’s not American enough for Gen Z male Americans? Which is even despicable to ask JFC 😮💨
Yes, women absolutely are hated here. WOC even more so. The “white male in charge of everything” is unfortunately still the ideal for many, especially those men who feel they are losing their privilege to women, minorities, LGBTQ or anyone else they seem inferior to themselves.
This is so depressing. We always think the younger generation is going to do better and be better, and then you read this. We’re never going to outgrow these racist, bigoted, sexist fascists.
Many of us adopt the politics of our parents and Gen X is the most violently conservative generation right now so it’s really not surprising that they’re raising kids to believe the same.
I’m remembering in the 80s how Reagan’s economic policies DECIMATED White Men with him going after unions & Farmers…and how every POS GOP POTUS DECIMATED White men (and everybody else) with their trickle-down economics…so hey…White Men being broke & broken is a price their willing to pay as long as WOMEN stay in their fucked up mysogynistic place. It’s as simple as that.
The economy hasn’t worked since the last time the Republikkkans elected a looney elderly man president during a hostage crisis. Trickle down economics has ruined the country and livelihood for millions as farms and small buisness got sucked into corporations. Wages have completely stagnated in rural areas. I do not earn significantly more than my grandmother did in the 1980s while prices have tripled and quadrupled in that time frame. The inflation/greed since covid has been catastrophic to my household. I am not usually a Bernie Sanders follower, but he made the point that the economy doesn’t work for most people and the rage is being directed at Democrats who have taken their base for granted for far too long.
My god I hope your comments become needlepoint because TRUTH!
All of this 🎯
I remember that time as well. And you know what they kept voting for Reagan anyway because he was white and they stupidly thought he was for them.
The problem is that Dems have not figured out social media the way the far right has. That is how young people get their news, and they don’t have enough life experience or general knowledge yet to challenge what they hear.
Oh well. Gen Z has the most to lose. The US economy will not get stronger. Opportunity will shrink. The entire world order is about to change, and much of what they imagine their life will be will no longer exist.
It is all a bit like the garden party scene in Gone With The Wind where the guys are over the moon about how great going to war will be.
For the first time in my LIFE I started getting my political news off YouTube & TikTok where it is RAMPANT…and I’m talking about Gen Zers run these accounts with MILLIONS of followers & clicks…so I don’t think this is a messaging issue…THIS is a “lack of humanity & decency” issue & no amount of messaging will change THAT!
And they will take it out on women/girls.
The misogyny was a big part of why Trump won. That’s the dirty secret among all these groups. The resentment that more women are going to colleges than men and being hired at what appeared as better jobs than men. Dudes don’t want to hear of the wage disparity between the sexes (or race or ethnicity either)., the glass ceiling, the bamboo selling, etc. Never mind that when women make less than men for doing the same work, it’s a hit to household income, so the boys/men in the family take a financial hit too.
A lot of people just want to shove off their failings on others. It’s easier for the psyche.
They can hug their resentment tight but it doesn’t change the fact that women are responsible for just under 50% of our nation’s economy. Their lives don’t get better when you remove women from the workforce because it reduces US GDP by $8 trillion a year. If women, en masse, all stop work for a single day, the ding to the economy is $20 billion.
The economy is code for “I’m not voting for a black woman” Harris had a clear economic plan which economists agreed with. This is about white men not wanting black and brown to prosper too. And to all of you who have family who voted for Trump because of the economy and you don’t challenge them, you are part of the problem too.
Exactly 💯, Bluesky.
It’s about not wanting “Mommy” telling them what to do. A tale as old as time.
I remember back in the Obama campaign, when I knew some activists they’d always say, “The problem with white people is that they’re cool until one day, they wake up and realise that they’re white.”
This is the first generation of white people who saw what equality was looking like, and that if it continued, they wouldn’t be special anymore, so they decided to vote for Trump.
It’s telling that the only people who voted for Kamala in marked numbers were Black and Jewish people, the rest of the races went for Trump.
So yeah, white people (Gen Z, Millenial, etc) woke up and realised they were white, what it meant in America and voted for their caste.
Like Sunny (sp?) from the view said, that vote was one of cultural resentment.

Kudo’s to the women who raised these young men. Clearly, they did a wonderful job.
Proud to say my 25 and 27 year old kids voted for Harris.
My amendment 25 bet is 18 months.
Noticed Cocaine Don was on Fox this morning.
So, somehow it’s still the woman’s fault when a man chooses to vote for Trump? Not the men who, you know, actually voted for him?
I actually don’t think they will 25th amendment him. He’s too much of a useful idiot. He’ll distract everyone with his insane and stupid activities so Vance and his billionaire overlords can enact Project 2025 with less attention on them.
I saw an interview with one white female college student who voted for Trump. She said she voted for him because he said he wouldn’t nationalize abortion bans. 🤯 Meantime, at Arizona State, young white men were voting for him because his campaign provided free MAGA hats. This is our future, folks.
Thanks to all the Gen Z’s who voted for a better future for all of us.
That young woman should have her college credits revoked because she clearly does not know how to read or listen. He absolutely is going to try to put in a federal abortion ban, and her generation is going to be effed up because of it.
I’ve never been so glad to not have a uterus anymore and be moving out of that age range. My heart breaks for the young women who aren’t.
I’ve seen a lot of posts from women who assumed that the state’s rights thing was legit. I guess people have to experience things for themselves though. If and probably when the Republicans ban abortion at a national level, that will override any state laws. Even in red states where they voted to protect abortion, we have seen their lawmakers overrule the vote. This country is ruled by sick and sadistic people. Women need to stop halfway listening to things and stop believing what some fast talking twerp on social media says.
The Democratic Party lost the 2024 election the moment Kamala Harris became the candidate. The people don’t want to vote for a woman, let alone a woman of colour.
I remember a neighbour, years ago, who ranted about the candidates for an election – 1 white man and 3 women (also white). He hated the white man, said he was no good, but there was no way he could vote for a woman so he’ll have to vote for the man. And, he was going to tell his family to vote for the man, so that’s 5 votes for the man.
That’s it. Issues didn’t matter. Character didn’t matter. Just the fact that she was female.
I also think all of the worry about “Joe Biden is too old” came from that same energy. Clearly, they have no problem with old white/orange men. Their problem was with the idea that the old white man would die and a woman – and a woman of color, specifically – would become the president.
🎯
I’ve seen this same chart and I’m…skeptical. Turnout was way down for both parties, but especially for the Democrats. They’re on track to receive 15 million fewer votes and for the Republicans it’s about 3 million. Turnout amongst 18-30 was in the toilets for Democrats. Trump is probably gonna earn maybe a little more in the raw vote, but it’s showing as a huge swing because his 18-30 voters turned out and Democrats 18-30 vote did not.
My 17-year-old son has been saying for months that young men would never vote for Kamala. He had all sorts of reasons — Gaza, not liking being called “fascist” or stupid by their sisters and female friends, college costing too much, housing out of reach, jobs difficult to get, etc. He also says the media that young men consume is rife with conservative BS.
I work with an organization that studies radicalization, and they’ve reported for the last ten years or so that Neo-Nazis and other extremist groups (and I imagine Russian and other malicious actors) have heavily targeted the social aspect of gaming to radicalize young men.
My son would have voted for Kamala if he’d been old enough to participate, but even though he’s resisted the nonsense aimed at him so far, he’s a more reluctant liberal than the rest of us, thanks to this BS, which also encourages both-sides-ing in order to depress turnout.
Talk to your sons, nephews and young men in your life and let them know how they are being manipulated.
I have a 20 year old son, and have been fighting against the online radicalization tsunami online since he was 11/12. Like, actively engaged in following it, talking to him about, trying to point it out and course correct. He’s not overtly maga, but he would be if I wasn’t been constantly trying to push back. Now getting into religion. I can see what’s going to happen when he gets time and distance and it breaks my heart. And infuriates me.
The federal government looks at the economy through statistics. Voters, including Gen Z, equate “the economy” with quality of life – can they afford what they need and want. So this part makes sense to me.
The rest, I don’t know. Maybe we were complacent in thinking young people will always be more liberal? The Trump campaign actively courted the young male vote, a group that doesn’t tend to vote all that much. Maybe young women have a different attitude about reproduction? Or they can’t imagine those rights being taken away? It’s hard for me to wrap my head around that. My generation lived in terror of getting pregnant – it was pretty much the end of one’s hopes and dreams.
“Puck goes on to say that young people’s biggest concern was “the economy,” rather than social and cultural issues which usually drive the youth vote.”
:
A close family member who works in the city’s fine arts museum could attest to this through what she witnesses on the job every single day: The youth who visit are dressed / styled for a selfie photo shoot & spend their time posing in front of the art to upload to their SM pages – projecting a quality of life. None of them seem to care about the art itself. Their focus is to capture a look & to be able to afford whatever is needed to garner the “Likes”.
Late boomers and Gen X and the generation they raised going all in on whiteness. That’s the story. I have never seen crappier parents than Gen X. The first to know how to use a computer and the issues with internet and they have allowed their children 8-12 hours of day of pure unadulterated poison. And why wouldn’t they? They mainline the same thing.
As a Gen X with no kids, but have witnessed my friends with kids, I have been so disappointed with my friends. They would rather plop a phone or tablet in front of their kids than teach creative play, imagination, etc. I have ONE friend who limits screentime for their 13 and 10 year old. We as Gen Xers didnt have internet growing up and we still were behaved. I don’t get the let’s let them be distracted by the tablet. I had a vivid imagination, read books, played a little video games, and drew/colored/created.
Also in NC and I was shocked at how close the Mo Green election was.
I was convinced Kamala was going to win by a landslide bc all the ads, signs, etc down here are blue.
We tried to early vote a few times and the lines were hours and hours long. We voted day of and there were about 100 people in line. There were groups of black women coming to vote together..for Trump!! And the Trump stands and those handing out the republican voting guides were ALL non white and I literally looked at my husband and said oh, shit….we knew then that it wasn’t going to go her way. Pretty much every person in line..different races, men, women, etc were giddily talking about how excited they were to vote for Trump. It was crazy.
Yikes! We’re pretty insular here in Massachusetts. We count on everything going Democrat and maybe once in a while a Republican-Lite makes it through. But we were shocked to find that Trump actually got more votes here than we imagined.
I actually wasn’t shocked because for the first time in 8 years I saw large groups of Trump supporters stationed along rotaries and along highways and byways with their collections of obnoxious flags. I was on Route 1 last week and got stuck behind a literal PARADE of Trump trucks. I’ve never seen anything like it here in MA. Of course, Saugus went to Trump so it’s not a huge surprise they’d be concentrated in that area.
Overall, I’m still really proud of New England. My dumb town went 56-43 Harris. Made me wish I still lived in Boston which went 77-20 Harris. But yeah, focusing in the fact that our state went 61-36 for Harris brings me a bit of much-needed comfort and reassurance right now. Also reminded me that I have zero desire to travel outside of this region. None. I prefer to spend my money in blue states.
Same here in NJ. It was way closer than it should have been.
Truth. People here refuse to acknowledge the problem crossover to minorities and both genders. This won’t help. To turn things back truth must be faced. Politico has a good piece here on Latino voters: https://www.politico.com/news/2024/11/06/democrats-latino-vote-trump-00187991
Yes, I’m watching the news here in NYC right now and they’re talking about the large shift in the boroughs toward the GOP. Reps from the Latino community are saying that the most important issues for them were public safety, the economy and immigration. They’ve been very worried about resources being taken away from their communities in favor of the migrants.
I’m in TX where I watched the local affiliate KHOU discuss demographic shifts using the state map w/ voting results from the prior 2 elections, stressing the big change on the TX/Mexico border counties w/ large Latino communities
2016 had large blue sections as did 2020
But 2024 was solid red. And statewide, less than 11 counties went blue.
I currently have up on my YT page: NYT Opinion | If You Think Biden & Harris Were Weak on the Border, Think Again.
The 16min segment was uploaded 5 days ago, but 30days too late. IDK if it would have made a difference.
People keep insisting that voters are just sick of liberalism and want change no matter what the cost. That’s bull. If the problem were just liberalism you would have seen a shift right amongst all groups, yet Black people voted for her. As if liberalism hasn’t screwed over Black people too.
I live in Canada and I’m sick of liberalism as much as the next person, but no amount of being fed up with the status quo would ever, EVER make me vote for a man who has openly and proudly vowed to deport millions of people, gut the healthcare system, dismantle the education system, promised to be a “dictator on day one”, and whose policies his own campaign team members said will destroy the economy.
What cost Harris the election was a toxic cocktail of racism and sexism, full stop. But no one who voted against her/stayed home would ever admit that. They might not even realize how deeply ingrained their biases are. From trying to play “gotcha” with her about her policies while soft balling Trump in interviews, to the fact that everyone calls her by her first name while calling Trump by his last name (because referring to someone by their first name is less formal and heaven forbid we treat a woman formally), the campaign was permeated with sexism and racism.
But it’s easier to simply blame liberalism for her loss than to acknowledge that Americans just don’t want a Black woman in charge of their country.
PP is our own little dictator wanna be, bought and sold by China.
My mom wound up in the hospital shortly before the election, so I jumped in a plane with my kids to see her. Thankfully, she’s okay.
Welp, my effing MAGA relatives called her up after the election and gloated. Mom never dpeaks about her childhood, and she was really upset: she talked snout the Vichy government and this girl who hid messenges in her bike frame for the Resistence. I had to call relatives I fon’t often speak to to explain that my mom needs to recover and she’s been retraumatized because this election reminds her of her childhood during WWII, please don’t talk politics or leave her alone. I heard a lot of crap about the economy, and some worse stuff. I texted my siblings to ask if mom has their names in the telephone so she can screen their calls.
I realized the difference between my Democrat & Never Trump relatives and my MAGA relatives now: the MAGA ones don’t have any recent history or many interactions with people who experienced persecution.
And they’re less likely to be the kind of people who care.
I saw several young women talking about the 4B movement online yesterday. And if these young women really hold to it then Gen Z baby boys have very low options for partners.
I attended an election night party at a local ale house decorated w/ Harris/Walz signs. Seated next to me on a bench were a group of young women (early 20s) quietly having a 4B convo.
Good for them. Protect themselves and their peace.
Someone shared a tweet from that Nick Fuentes pig:
Her body. My choice. Forever.
May the worst possible plagues fall upon him and his ilk.
Also seeing on TikTok that young women are going to boycott bars and clubs—-get together at home, in parks, with friends. No men.
I hope they stick to it.
❤️
Gen X’er mom of 18 and 21 yo sons. Sadly, this doesn’t surprise me. We live in Austin, which is this wonderful little blue bubble in the red hell of Texas. All of our friends are moderate to liberal to very liberal. Not one Trumper. And yet most of my kids’ male friends are either Trumpers or apathetic. Many were energized this summer, but it faded. Interestingly, though, their girlfriends and I would have great Harris chats, but in retrospect, those were when the boys weren;t around. Almost like they didn’t think they should be talking with me about it. Having analyzed this in depth lately, I’m blaming TikTok for corrupting this generation. They are all about the 10-20 second soundbites that make them laugh. The Orange One did this super well. Harris and the Dems… not so much. Like, my kids laughed at the microphone bit this past weekend, and thought us old adults just didn’t get it. I’m fairly convinced my sons didn’t vote for Trump – I work in local politics so unlike their peers, I feel like they get it. Bu watch me living in a romance novel like the rest of us Dems in America. Anyway… its all scary AF and I am terrified for the future. I feel like Tuesday was the second plane hitting the Twin Towers. When you finally realize just what is happening here in Gilead.
I wonder if TikTok will really be banned from the U.S. in January as scheduled. Will they go forward with it or will Dump have them vote again and reverse the order?
Who the hell is Nick Fuentes?
What a disgusting PIG!
Look how open these vicious bast**ds are already. They HATE females.
Power mad, creatures.
She should have done the Joe Rogan podcast… as much as I despise him…. She could have cut in on the bro vote
It wouldn’t have mattered. They hate no matter what.
No she shouldn’t have. It wouldn’t have mattered and we shouldn’t expect an educated and capable black woman to kiss the ring of some podcast bro with absolutely no credentials. F*uck Joe Rogan and anyone who takes him seriously. OP, I’m not directing that comment at you personally. I’m just so frustrated with everything.
Nah, they resent her for being an accomplished, intelligent minority woman who had been able to beat the odds (which is why they used the dog whistle tactic of calling her “dumb”). What they want is to have the same easy, “failing up” kind of life that Rogan has, so they too can pick on minorities. If you compare Rogan’s trajectory to Trump’s, it’s pretty similar. Mediocre men continue to catch lucky breaks. These men don’t want to work at or for anything; they want all opportunities and resources handed to them.
I just want to add that in addition to SM it’s that we haven’t taught this generation to READ.
There was a great piece in The Atlantic recently about how Ivy League English lit classes can’t assign novels bc the vast majority of students can’t read anything longer than a page or two (due to schools teaching for tests and the fact that there is nothing longer than an excerpt on a standardized test). Besides this being terribly sad, it had direct impact on empathy, understanding, problem solving- everything we’d hope that these kids had under their belts by the time they got to college.
We have deeply failed our children by fundamentally misunderstanding the purpose of the American public education system- we are trying to build a robust democracy. To do that we need educated voters. People who can read more than 4 paragraphs, hold lots of information in their heads, and make informed decisions. This is what happens when we teach for tests.
That is so sad! How did they even make it to an Ivy League not being able to read novels? I hope universities fail students like this instead of letting them skate by, otherwise we’re heading for Idiocracy.
I can’t imagine not reading. My daughter is five and she already likes us to read her short novels. Massive parenting fail and a failure of the education system.
As an english Literature major who went to a non Ivy League school, this upsets me greatly. Social media and the internet have killed people’s attention spans. I read Count of Monte Cristo and Dante’s Inferno(amongst other things) in high school!
Absolutely agree that social media has decimated attention spans.
How do these kids even get admitted to English Lit programs or to college/university in general? The dumbing-down is alarming, but, hey, AI will save us. Not.
I’m proud of my 18 year old son who voted Harris. But the comments from his classmates, both male and female, are shocking. They are so immature they don’t remember the first Trump presidency. They actually said “It wasn’t so bad the first time around” – yes, maybe because they were 10-14 years old at that time. And, they are virulently pro-Gaza. Good luck with that. They don’t remember all the Arab bans that Trump put in. The lack of historical knowledge for the Zoomers is shocking. Never mind the rise of Nazism in the 40’s, these kids can’t even remember the first Trump presidency.
I’ve had pro-Gaza supporters in my mind for several weeks. If a protest gets out of hand, I have no doubt Trump will make an example of them by deploying a militia as a flex for Netanyahu. There seemed to be no recall of the BLM protests & people getting swept up into unmarked grey vans. It left me w/ the feeling they never considered such scenarios when threatening to withhold support for Harris on the campaign trail.
It’s shocking. But it seems the universe is now saying this ignorant generation needs to be taught a lesson. And they will see for themselves what it will be really like as Trump is their president in their 20s. It’s going to be very painful for many of them. This term will be worse – if they’re complaining now – not sure if they will be able to survive a Trump presidency unless they have a fat bank acct.
I’m surrounded by white men and women. I’m never going anywhere again.
White people are so overrated. I’m one and don’t get it. Stay safe.
Parent of 2 teenaged boys here. I am working so hard to keep my boys from becoming radicalized Joe Rogan (or worse) Andrew Tate sheep. I have been diving into the “manosphere” lately and researching incel influencers and content creators so I can keep my boys away from them. I have also been looking at how to nurture and parent them to feel confident and secure so that they don’t seek out this type of community. This massive shift is a sign that we have a boy problem. Many don’t have fathers or stable homes and look for other father figures ti teach them how to be men. Sadly they are turning towards the alpha males who speak to their insecurity and offer them community where they then slowly push them to misogyny, racism, xenophobia and homophobia. These are all threats to a fragile white male. No shade with that statement, these are young boys who do have fragile egos, low self confidence, and massive self doubt.
“Many don’t have fathers or stable homes and look for other father figures ti teach them how to be men. ” Research has shown again and again that men raised in single mother’s homes are in no way deprived of self esteem and are largely better in managing their emotions which automatically means being a person capable of rationalizing and less likely to extremize.
These boys need role models like Tim Waltz. The Trump campaign repeatedly tries to emasculate Waltz for caring about women, like it was a weakness.
Why do they need a man to teach them how to be men? Last time I checked, the qualities that make a man truly “successful” in life (intelligence, curiosity, concern for others, emotional maturity) are also present in women.
If they were mad that women wouldn’t f**k them before, well they can expect to never touch a woman again with draconian bans on women’s healthcare. Women don’t want to be with men who do not see them as human.
For just a few days, I don’t want to hear anyone blaming democrats for this. The problem is men who have been radicalized by a lot of far-right bullshit and that is incredibly insidious and difficult to combat. Trump won the popular vote and turnout was down largely because of widespread voter suppression in largely minority and lib-leaning areas (just look at Georgia). Our country is broken. It’s not the dem’s fault for not reaching people who were unreachable. These f*cking men of all races, religions and creeds happily voted for Trump knowing full well what he would do. There is nothing Harris could have done to stop that. The fascists have taken control.
Two things stuck out to me. Algorithms have ruined peoples consumption of information. You only see content that you already have shown interest in, therefore you never see any other information. My 60 year old cousin “never heard” that Jared got 2b dollars from prince bone saw, a true fact, but he knew all about comet pizza, a proven lie. Secondly, these Z’s and millennials didn’t know life before the affordable care act. They have no clue what a hellscape it was that well care was not previously covered, lifetime caps tossed people with chronic or terminal diseases off the bus and that there were exemptions for any sort of pre existing condition the insurers could find to exclude you from coverage. They’re about to find out though, and just in time for most of them to start having to really deal with health issues for the first time.
Yes! I’m an older millennial and I remember that I couldn’t get insurance as a young woman until the ACA came into being. (I also remember the tea party and their “death panel” fear mongering) Anyone younger wouldn’t have had that experience and don’t understand how many people want to strip it away.
Yet in TX, the “death panels” of lawyers that OB GYNs must consult & obey before attending to a pregnancy in distress are alive & well. ProPublica has been combing the TX death records to uncover & publish the stories of women who have died as a direct result of the Dobbs decision.
Biden campaigned heavily on student loan forgiveness, and Kamala barely mentioned it as far as I saw. I think that was a big reason so many younger people voted for Biden, but they saw how it didn’t work out as expected over the past four years and so they weren’t drawn back to the polls for Kamala.
Yep–I’ve always thought that Biden should have at least given everybody whose student loans were forgiven a big, cheesy certificate saying “YOUR LOANS ARE FORGIVEN BECAUSE OF PRESIDENT BIDEN AND THE DEMOCRATS” the same way Trump autographed everybody’s pandemic stimmy. It’s dumb and inaccurate, but you have to hit these people over the head with that kind of information.
The economy IS terrible right now. They’re not lying about that. Everybody knows it and neither party has said a word about the world we live in: the world of independent contracting without benefits, the tools of Artificial Intelligence getting ready to take everybody’s job. Ten years ago I knew people who could successfully side-hustle with Uber/Lyft, but those algorithms have changed so much that it’s impossible to make a decent living doing that work now. The zoomers have opted for anger and I don’t blame them, honestly. I just wish they weren’t so right-wing about it all. The accountants and lawyers I know are out of work or underemployed and they now have ai robots cleaning hospital floors at the University of Chicago.
From a political standpoint, I’ll say this: UBI may be the only answer for anything close to a “normal” economy in the near future, but these MAGA youths will never even consider it.
The economy is TERRIFIC, right now, according to the metrics used to measure it.
4B
Now.
Makes total sense to me.
Racists should come clean. They’re normalized now. Instead of the n-word, you have people saying Harris has a low IQ. Really? I wonder how many of these a-holes could pass the CA Bar exam, one of the toughest in the nation?
And others were saying, “There’s just something about her I don’t like.”
Yeah, we know: her race and her gender.
These voters should be loud and proud bigots.
As many have said, Americans continues to demonstrate how sexist and racist they truly are.
And how intimidated they are by a strong, powerful, intellectual woman. I have dated many left-leaning men in my 20s (43 now) who made fun of me about my vocabulary, quizzed me on whether I knew a certain vocabulary word I just mentioned, etc. Men bottom line are intimidated by a strong, independent, smart woman because their fragile egos and low self esteem cannot handle them appearing inferior to women. I broke up with many men because they never seemed okay with my intellect or my independence and these were democrats!!!! My first bf was a republican voter and he wanted me to be a trad wife and got mad at me that I wouldn’t allow him to impregnant me at 20/21. I have determined I need an intelligent BDE man who can handle me. But most men can’t, thus, Harris was a threat to their egos. These Gen Z men think they should be there one day like Trump and social media has taught them they can become a rich influencer too. It really is as simple as that.
I don’t think the point is Trusting Trump. It is to send the Democrats a message that they will continue to lose unless they change their ways. I disagree. I voted for Harris. However, I understand why some young people made the choice not to vote.
Those 200,000 to 300,000 registered democratic voters that were missing in Michigan, who do you think they were? I think they were a combination of Arabic voters and young men. I don’t think Kamala lost this election only because of sexism; although, I think it was a factor. Another reason; however, was Biden’s handling of the Israel-Palestine conflict and Kamala’s comments about how she wouldn’t change a thing. Yet, no one wants to talk about this. Ignoring it won’t make it go away. It may cost us the young male vote and the Arabic vote again if we don’t address it.
Your lot can make a thousand excuses for the inaction in the face of an existential threat to women and minorities, but to be clear, the rest of us are done listening to it and will be focusing on what’s needed to protect our own. When the rights you take for granted, the ones hard won by the older generations, start rolling back, we won’t be showing up to the protests. You can take that bullet yourself.
I hope they don’t think GenZ ladies are going to be wanting to sleep with them now?!
From what people are repeating from younger men, they’re not going to ask. As someone said ‘your body, my choice’. And they’ll likely decriminalize it. Happy days!
I was shocked also by these statistics that Gen Z (esp gen z men) went for Trump. And that Trump took the popular vote. Im sorry but that also doesn’t add up at all. My thoughts are
1.)With Gen Z men in the US going more far right it’s no wonder why gen Z (US)women now prefer staying single and handing out with friends Or meeting/dating guys from overseas instead(my niece is one example). Gen Z American men are going to have issues as they grow older. And if they don’t have a big fat bank account, it will be extremely tough for them these next 4 years.
2.)those who have been empathetic towards these people are pretty much Done being empathetic for people who just voted against their own interests and get what they deserve.
3.)I’m still very suspicious about the results, esp winning the popular vote- we’re not stupid. And he hardly put Any effort to his campaign, no ground game, or paid for many ads. And who’s backing him – with their $ could very well engineered the whole thing.
My hope is that Gen A learns from all this and be better world citizens. My kids have been traveling the world since 3 yo and they spent 6 mths in Spain earlier this year. And I see more families these days do the same instead of a trip to DisneyWorld.
