The UK will use King Charles’s ‘soft power’ to deal with Donald Trump

I simply cannot emphasize enough how much Europe is freaking out right now because Donald Trump “won” the election. European leaders were at their wit’s end dealing with Trump in his first term, and they fully understand that his second term is going to be a lot worse. There are already reports that Trump will follow through on his long-standing wish of removing America from NATO. Even if he’s unsuccessful in that, he’ll be able to significantly weaken NATO and America’s NATO alliances. I certainly believe that he’ll cut off Ukraine and give Putin the greenlight to do whatever he wants there. That being said, Trump is extremely stupid and susceptible to flattery, and he loves nothing more than when European leaders or European royals are nice to him. Emmanuel Macron has his plan in place for how to deal with Trump, and it looks like Keir Starmer’s plan is just giving Trump a lot of facetime with King Charles and the royals.

The King is ready to use the Royal Family’s much-vaunted soft power to help smooth relations between Britain and Donald Trump’s incoming US administration. Keir Starmer has been working closely with the monarch on the international stage since July but Trump’s promise to shake up the world order now presents a serious challenge to the oft-cited special relationship between the two countries.

Quite how much King Charles or his family can do to help remains to be seen but once the new president takes office in January it is likely that the royals will be deployed to help get over Britain’s worldview to the new US president. The 75-year-old monarch has known Donald and Melania Trump and their children for years and, while they disagree on the threat from climate change and there are potential tensions on numerous other issues – not least Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – their personal friendship may stand the UK in good stead.

Starmer and his colleagues have spent the past few months trying to build ties with Trump and his team but face a few bumps in the road ahead. Trump’s closeness to Boris Johnson, Nigel Farage and Elon Musk – the billionaire X owner who has criticised Starmer over his handling of this summer’s race riots and claims of two-tier policing, and now inheritance tax raids on farmers – is a potential problem.

A row over Labour sending 100 current or former staff across the Atlantic to campaign for Kamala Harris in their spare time has not helped the new Government’s relationship with the incoming Republican administration. Nor has previous criticism of Trump from senior Labour figures, including the Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, former frontbencher Emily Thornberry, and London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Some British diplomats have privately expressed frustration with what they see as the new Government’s naivety and missteps, as well as the foreign affairs inexperience of Lammy and his ministerial team. But then others have pointed out that other world leaders have made similar criticism of Trump and survived: Johnson, for example, worked well with Trump despite describing him as “clearly out of his mind” and “unfit for office” a year before he was elected president the first time.

But the royals can bring an extra element of diplomacy, via official and state visits, informal chats, and meetings at international gatherings. Trump owns a golf course near Aberdeen. Might a private trip to Scotland allow the King to entertain him over tea at Balmoral? Time will tell. The US president might also be persuaded stop over in Britain en route to a Nato summit in The Hague next June or come to London on a European tour in his first year in office.

Evie Aspinall, director of the British Foreign Policy Group think-tank, said there would be much that the Starmer and Trump administrations would disagree on in the next few years so the UK would have to be creative in its diplomacy.

“I do think that the Royal Family is a really good way for the UK to strengthen relations, not least because, Donald Trump, he loves family, he loves the pomp of the monarchy and I think that’s an exciting way for him to feel important,” she said. “Being seen to be recognised by the Royal Family is something, I think, that he would like. So actually the more we can bring in people like King Charles, who he particularly likes, I think there’s an opportunity to get a basis of strong relations from that.”

David Lammy suggested an inbound state visit might come later in Trump’s presidency, even though the precedent for previous second-term presidents such as George W Bush and Barack Obama was tea or lunch at Windsor Castle with the monarch.

The Foreign Secretary, who met Trump for dinner in New York in September despite his previous criticism, told the BBC’s Newscast podcast: “State visits take a while to organise. So in the next year, I’ve got to tell you, I think that would be a bit of a tall order. But he was genuine in his respect and his affection for the Royal Family. It is always the case that as head of state the King plays an important role. We want to be generous with our American friends and as they will be, I imagine with us, particularly in a second term.”

[From i News]

“Trump’s closeness to Boris Johnson, Nigel Farage and Elon Musk…” While I’m no fan of BoJo, he’s not trying to “run” Trump like Musk and Farage. Farage has been trying to become Britain’s ambassador to MAGAland for years now. Musk has his own agenda, and it’s not a British agenda. But anyway, yeah – what the Brits need to understand is that Trump is profoundly uncomplicated. He worships the Windsors and he’s a starf–ker of the highest order. Get King Charles to really glad-hand him and put down the red carpet and Trump will give Britain whatever they want. The Macrons will do the same – Trump is a huge fan of Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron because they always doted on him and gave him special attention. It would never occur to Trump that people think he’s a childish moron who can be largely swayed with flattery.

Oh O this doesn’t sound good, Have the UK government just thrown Harry under the Bus ? where KC# appeals to DJT to deport Harry, in a Send him home deal? i hope Chrales realises the world is their oyster and they can go anywhere. Starmer needs to put on his big boy pants and Man up and deal with DJT

    • Julia says:

Visas don’t work like that. You can’t just deport someone with a legal visa.

      • Mayp says:

        Trump could….. and would.

      • Julia says:

@Mayp How could he since presidents don’t have the power to cancel visas and why would he since most Americans don’t care about this and he never mentions Harry unless baited by a UK journalist?

      • Mayp says:

@julia, I don’t know where you were during Trump’s administration but he put his cronies in top agency positions and otherwise exercised his influence (or threats) to get what he wanted, whether it was legal or not. CNN has a couple interesting articles today, the first was about federal employees quaking in their boots because they’re fearing huge layoffs to replace them with Trump’s cronies and in another article an attorney is advising certain people that Trump has targeted to leave the country!

The courts have made it very clear that Trump can do what he wants, illegal or not, as president without consequence. As far as Americans not caring about Prince Harry or his Visa status, there are an awful lot of Trump’s financial backers and hardcore supporters that would love to see Harry deported, or, at the very least, his visa application released.

Remember the children in cages? I think it is naive to think that Trump is going to follow the law to the letter. Besides, if the Republicans gain control of the Senate, Trump can just have the law changed.

      • Julia says:

Who are these hardcore supporters who want to see Harry deported? Apart from a few weirdos at the Heritage Foundation I can’t think of one? How does a British Prince affect them? What do unaccompanied minors have to do with a millionaire who entered the US legally and has an American wife? If this is such an important topic to Trump and his cronies why does he never mention it? The only one talking about it is Eric and only to British outlets when asked. As others have mentioned releasing Harry’s visa documents would open up a can of worms that help nobody.

      • Advisor2u says:

Right now, Prince Harry is a US entrepreneur creating jobs/an employer, an investor, a philanthropist, an employee (at BetterUp), a home owner, a Millionair times over, with residency since 2020.
He is also the father of two American kids – of which one is an American born – and married to an American woman since 6 years.
All these factors on their own made him eligible for a US Visa.

And him as a royal, could have (most probably) been granted an A-1 Visa on his entry in the country by mid March 2020, when he STILL was on payroll as a Sr working royal and as the grandson of a reigning monarch (the trial period of him and Meghan stepping back as Sr working royals STARTED two weeks later on April 1, 2020 and ENDED on April 1, 2021).
Therefore, for 12.5 mounts Prince Harry’s Visa could have remained on Diplomatic grounds.

As long as the current laws/rules for residency/immigrants apply, Harry is oké, unless he commmits a crime that can cause him to be deported, but….. only with a conviction.

So Prince Harry doesn’t have to care for anything reg his residency in the US for the foreseeable future. Meaning, to care much for what the gleeful British press rats, the RRs, tabloid hacks like Marreen, the HF, the RF, the MAGA crowd, or the Trump administration, would want to orchestrate to specifically target him for, like a nominated deportee. Changing laws and filing courtcases take a hell lot of time.

  2. Eurydice says:

OK, so what is “the British worldview”?

  3. Smart&Messy says:

Are we sure Trump cares about KC as much as he cared about being acknowledged by QE2? QE2 was a cultural icon, it was cool to be photographed with her, being invited for dinner to “the palace” etc. Does Trump feel the same about KC? And can KC really put aside his own need for constant special attention in order to give it to someone else? The left behinds are awful at diplomacy for that very reason, they can’t see further than their own needs for sycophancy.

    • Lorelei says:

That’s a good question! I think he’ll still be taken in by the fact that they’re “royalty,” though, and still want to be seen and photographed with them. Especially William and Kate, lol. He probably cares less about Chuck (remember “the Prince of Whales?” tweet 😂) and Camilla, but I bet he’ll want to hob-knob with William and Kate. And I hope they’re not able to get out of it.

      • Tessa says:

Trump would want to enable Williams statesman dreams. I wonder how melani a and Kate will get along.

  4. Libra says:

Wait for it; a grand White House reception for Wm and Kate in 2025. They will “take America” .

    • seaflower says:

I can’t see the Brit govt letting WanK anywhere near Trump and co. Given their last few “r”oyal tours, the chances of the stuffing up are too great – the diplomatic ramifications would be appalling.

    • Jais says:

I mean if Charles doesn’t recover in the next 4 years, it’s gonna be president trump and king William. Yikes. I kind of don’t trust William not to ask trump’s people to somehow make Harry’’s life in the states harder. Idk William has issues and I don’t trust him not to be a vindictive pos. Not saying the Wales are going to be doing trade deals but they’re gonna be talking about petty shit imo. That said, trump would probably have a leaky staff so it might not be prudent to be so obvious.

    • Flower says:

@Libra I CAN see this happening.
The UK is so isolated that if Trump demands Royal attention – the foreign office will procure it for him.

Trump will have ZERO interest in Chuck and CamCam but he will enjoy using Will & Kate to triangulate and antagonise Harry & Meghan.

It will however greatly harm W&K amongst respectable people and forever link them to Trump and I LOVE that for them.

The white Patriarchy power couple stained with the indelible ink of Trump at a time when the Commonwealth is itching to break away.

  5. Julia says:

During the last Trump presidency Boris Johnson and his government tried to cosy up to Trump in order to get a trade deal. They gave him a state visit and a banquet with the Windsors, a private meeting with Queen Elizabeth etc… What did the UK get in return? Nothing….
If anyone thinks that just flattering Trump and giving him state visits will get Europe and the UK what they want they haven’t learnt anything from the last Trump presidency. The UK will get nothing unless it is in the interest of the Trump administration and no amount of flattery will change that.

    • Eurydice says:

Exactly. They think Trump admires the RF because he looks up to them, but his ego is just as big as theirs is.

    • Flower says:

Exactly this – Trump will string them along – enjoy the pomp and pageantry and then bounce.

I can also see Trump insisting that the Foreign office get H&M to pay him some attention (which they WILL NOT). And then I can see the usual UK rags attacking H&M for not cosying up to him.

I can see Ivanka especially wanting that link-up

      • maisie says:

For sure this time Trump will get his parade while riding in the King’s golden coach, something EII denied him. They’ll also probably force William to take the big photo ops Trump & minions were denied during his first state visit (fortunately Kate can still credibly beg off due to her illness). Wonder if the royal family will now allow Trump to pocket all the royal antiques he fancied and strongly intimated would love as “gifts” the first time around. Better put things away or use copies, Chuck.

Trump will probably be even ruder and more crass than he was when he met Elizabeth II – I’ll never forget all those photos of him walking ahead of her, talking to her over his shoulder. Hm. Maybe he won’t be able to take walks by then.

  6. Harla says:

Of course Charles and Don will get along, they’re both old, white men who feel that the world has done them wrong, who feel aggrieved that everyone sees through them and knows that the view is horrendous, they’ll sit in the corner chewing on the regurgitated vomit of their petty grievances. Special relationship indeed.

  7. Carol Mengel says:

Can Trump leave the country as a convicted felon?

    • Harla says:

He can leave the country but there’s scores and scores of countries that deny entry for convicted felons. His ability to travel abroad is severely limited 😃

    • Lorelei says:

It’s absolutely unreal to me that we’re actually having this conversation. But yeah, it will be interesting to see how that aspect of it plays out. My guess is he’ll flatly ignore any restrictions and try to go wherever and do whateverTF he wants, so I guess it will depend on each country’s leadership to decide how to handle it and whether or not to enforce their own laws? It’s fcking unreal that we’ll have a president who couldn’t even vote for himself. JFC

      • sunnyside up says:

Britain doesn’t usually allow in convicted felons. Most PMs would let Trump in but will Starmer, after all he is a barrister and hopefully respects the law.

  8. Steph says:

Do they plan on sending Charles to the states often? Last I checked, Trump’s 34 felony convictions ban him from the UK. I think France well but don’t quote me on that. Shit, now I gotta google the locations of all the big heads of state meetings.

    • Sue says:

I think the first thing he’ll do is pardon himself from his 34 convictions. Then he’ll pardon the 1,500 domestic terrorists that he sent to murder Congress.

      • Harla says:

A president isn’t allowed to pardon himself but he’ll just have the Supreme Court do something to overturn his convictions. But yeah, he’ll definitely pardon all the insurrectionists and election officials that interfered with the election.

      • Steph says:

His convictions are state crimes. He can’t pardon those.

  9. Sue says:

Well, at least there are adults in the room when it comes to U.S.’s European relations. Seriously, just keep setting up meetings between him and the Windsors and he’ll think he’s doing busy work. Just keep distracting him with meaningless, shiny things so we can minimize the damage. Thanks, Europe for babysitting the fascist toddler that too many Americans (not me) think is a good idea. Love, your stupid younger sibling, America.

  10. Kingston says:

I see a whole lotta humiliation in chucky’s future & I can’t wait to watch.

During betty’s time trump & his family were cringeworthily obsequious to the royals. But I believe that now he will be feeling his oats & will expect them to be unctuous.

Can’t wait to see chucky lying prostrate in front of trump. LMFAO Figuratively, of course.

    Do it for England, chucky!

  11. janey says:

they’d be better off sending Andrew, far more in common with Trump

  12. ThatGirlThere says:

Chuckles and Diaper Donny loves themselves more than they love anyone else.

Even if they’re somehow forced to move back to England (I can’t imagine how) Harry and Meghan will be fine. They’re wealthy smart and will figure it out. Will is the one to be concerned about. The obsession with his brother and wanting Harry’s life and wife (in my humble opinion) has always caused him to lose weight and grow that ridiculous beard. He’s gonna lose it, if Harry is back on Shutter Island and still thriving.

    • Flower says:

They will NEVER be forced back to the UK.

Meghan is a US citizen as are her children.

They have a home in Portugal amongst other options.

This is a deranger fantasy so can we stop stoking it please.

  13. aquarius64 says:

I said this in a post yesterday: William and Kate are really going to have to earn their keep when it comes to Trump. As future king and queen consort they are required to do meet and greet and class photos with him and the Trump clan that come along. Kate will not be able to claim that day is a bad day; and Trump will see it as a
snub if she and William are no shows.
Kate will have to get over the crude comment Trump made about her nude
photos on France; and William is going
have to get over the crude things Trump said about Diana. Trust KP is aware a big swath of Americans still see Trump as the monster that he is (to the point they are cutting off friends and family who voted for Trump) and the Waleses don’t want pictures with Trump or be associated with his vileness. Well, the Waleses are vile on their own, but suck it up buttercups, you have to play nice with Orange-zilla of the UK pays the price.

  14. Anonymous says:

Maybe Dems should try this here. Too bad we would all be too disgusted to last even one second attempting it.

  15. Brassy Rebel says:

So, the future of the western alliance depends on European heads of state kissing Trump’s ass sufficiently? We’re truly f**ked.

  16. Hypocrisy says:

Two sub par geriatric white men who by an accident of birth were given extreme wealth and privileges and it has never been enough.. we live in a sad world that would rely on either of these pathetic men for any leadership. Maybe Trump won’t even meet with him for fear of catching his cancer also Trump does have a history of not liking to be around or photographed with sick or injured people. So who knows. I care but I don’t anymore at this stage.

  17. Gremlins says:

Two narcissists who thrive on toadies and flattery.

  18. Lau says:

Bojo is the Btitish version of Trump, let’s not forget that. Macron is a coward who gets along way too well with fascists.

  19. FancyPants says:

Malignant narcissists are easy to manipulate. Flattery over minor things and present whatever you’re trying to get them to do as a question so they can think it was their idea all along- I deal with my surgeons the same way.
