What do you think of the ‘Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy’ trailer?

I still maintain that the first Bridget Jones’s Diary movie is a masterpiece. I love that movie (and the book) and Renee Zellweger absolutely deserved all of the awards, nominations and praise she got for it. But every film after that has gotten progressively worse. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason had some okay parts, but it was pretty bad overall. Bridget Jones’s Baby was catastrophically bad. And I do not have high hopes for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. There were rumors for years that Renee wanted to make another Bridget film, and they finally put everything together this year.

If you’ve read Helen Fielding’s book, you know that the setup for Mad About the Boy is a huge bummer, and the first trailer doesn’t pull its punches. You know upfront that Mark Darcy has died and that Bridget is a widow with a young son and daughter. The whole storyline is about Bridget getting back into the dating pool as a single mother over 50. From the trailer, it looks like Colin Firth returned for some ghostly appearances, and Hugh Grant also returned for what is possibly an extended cameo. But the bulk of the action falls to Leo Woodall (playing Bridget’s much-younger lover) and Chiwetel Ejiofor, playing a handsome and age-appropriate man in Bridget’s orbit. The trailer:

Yeah… I’m happy for Chiwetel, because he usually doesn’t get roles like this, where he’s playing a straight-forward romantic lead. But this doesn’t look great. That being said, it looks like a pretty straight-forward adaptation of the book, so at least there are no huge surprises. In fact, the biggest surprise is that they’ve dumped this on streaming – it will be on Peacock exclusively, with no theatrical run. Interesting. They must not have a lot of faith in it.

I love trailers that are basically the entire movie. Gurrl, mind blowing sex with a 29 year old is fine but he’s mafia and tried to kill Portia. Run!

First they killed off Big and now they’ve killed off Mark Darcy?

To the Brits here, how do you rate her English accent?I always thought it was a muddled mess.

I was thinking I would likely check it out even though, yes, it doesn’t look good, but I don’t have peacock. I hate the way streaming works sometimes

They really always made bridget look like such a mess. I mean, ok, I can sympathize with not being happy with your shape and wearing loungewear and feeling frazzled, but at least brush your hair sometimes! My goodness

Same. A month of a streaming service is cheaper than renting a movie, but it feels so wasteful to me.

I guess I’m in the minority as I loved the third one….. Really looking forward to this and hope Hugh Grant has more than just a cameo.

I really liked the first one, struggled with the second, and found the third surprisingly enjoyable. My biggest issue with the last one was I wanted her to end up with Patrick Dempsey’s character, Jack. I know, I know, she has to end up with Darcy. I love Colin Firth but I just felt like Jack was a better fit for Bridget. Mark was too uptight.

Now she’s a widow? Three movies for them to get married (at the very end) and boom, it’s over? Ugh. I need a minute. OK, I’m good. Well, I guess I’ll check it out on streaming.

Oh, I totally agree they should stop making her look so frumpy! Even in the second movie where she didn’t have kids consuming her energy, she looked like she didn’t wash her hair or something. It bothered me. And it’s not even like she has difficult hair? It’s fine and pretty straight with a slight wave. All she needs is shampoo, conditioner, a blow brush and maybe a spritz of light hold spray. Yeesh.

I love the first movie and actually really liked the 3rd. The 2nd I would never bother to watch. But this looks pretty fun I must say!

Does it look moderately bad? Yes. Will I probably watch it anyway? Also yes.

The Bridget Jones books and first movie are my guilty pleasure. I love them! (not overly fond of films 2+3, and books 1+4 are my favorites). In the fourth book, Daniel is really sweet and a good friend to Bridget and her kids. This actually looks kinda good?

Feck! only streaming on Peacock? They missed a real chance if they don’t put it out in theaters. By Valentines Day (cringe – not sayin’ Galentines) – we will all be desperate to gather with comrades in the comfort of a laugh and non-alcoholic popcorn.

I will watch this. If it’s only Colin Firth’s ghost I will watch.

      With you!
I’m also trusting Hugh who said he found this one really touching and meaningful. he’s a harsh critic and if he says it’s worth it, I’m double sure I’ll watch it.
I loved them all, actually. The first one hit so close to home… Bridget Jones was a generational icon in my younger days.

I don’t know, Kaiser. Years ago when I first heard the storyline for this, I was married and so disappointed that they would break my heart by offing Mr. Darcy. But now I’m on the other side of a contentious divorce, so glad to be out, and I say, yeah, out with the boy; put Bridget back out there. Onward with some adventures for Bridget.
