Pete Hegseth paid a settlement to a woman who accused him of assault in 2017

Republicans are making a big show of being “shocked” by Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees, and many of them are tut-tutting the choices of Robert Kennedy Jr, Matt Gaetz and Pete Hegseth in particular. Kennedy is going to give everyone polio, measles and covid. Matt Gaetz is going to make the Department of Justice a haven for sexual predators. Pete Hegseth is going to ban women and people of color from the Pentagon and the armed services, all so he can create an ultra-right-wing white Christian army. But that’s not all – as it turns out, Gaetz won’t be the only sexual predator in Trump’s cabinet. Pete Hegseth paid a woman who accused him of drugging and raping her.

Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of defense, paid a woman who accused him of sexual assault as part of a nondisclosure agreement, though he maintained that their encounter was consensual, according to a statement from his lawyer Saturday and other documents obtained by The Washington Post.

Hegseth’s attorney, Timothy Parlatore, said that Hegseth was “visibly intoxicated” at the time of the incident, and maintained that police who were contacted a few days after the encounter by the woman concluded that “the Complainant had been the aggressor in the encounter.” Police have not confirmed that assertion. Hegseth agreed to pay an undisclosed amount to the woman because he feared that revelation of the matter “would result in his immediate termination from Fox,” where he worked as a host, the statement said.

The statement came after a detailed memo was sent to the Trump transition team this week by a woman who said she is a friend of the accuser. The memo, a copy of which was obtained by The Post, alleged he raped the then-30-year-old conservative group staffer in his room after drinking at a hotel bar. The person who sent the memo to the transition team did not respond to requests for comment from The Post.

The accuser, whose identity has not been made public, filed a complaint with the police alleging she was sexually assaulted days after the Oct. 7, 2017, encounter in Monterey, California, but the local district attorney did not bring charges. Police confirmed that they investigated the incident. After she threatened litigation in 2020, Hegseth made the payment and she signed the nondisclosure agreement, his attorney said.

The detailed four-page memo about the incident has set off debate among senior Trump transition officials, but so far Trump has stood behind Hegseth. Spokesman Steven Cheung earlier this week said: “President Trump is nominating high-caliber and extremely qualified candidates to serve in his Administration. Mr. Hegseth has vigorously denied any and all accusations, and no charges were filed. We look forward to his confirmation as United States Secretary of Defense so he can get started on Day One to Make America Safe and Great Again.”

In the letter to the Trump transition team, the victim’s friend described in detail what happened, which is that Hegseth likely drugged her and she lost about nine hours in the night in question, and what she does remember is struggling to find her way out of Hegseth’s hotel room. She had a panic attack and felt certain that he had raped her, so she went to the emergency room and got a rape kit. The whole thing sounds like it could be a pattern. I doubt it was the first time for Hegseth, let me just say that.

Oh, and there’s also an issue about his tattoos. Several of his tattoos are, like, known white nationalist and Christofascist symbols.

Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger (sp?) aren’t there anymore. Does anyone else here think that elected Republiscums are most likely to say that they’re shocked and appalled and back these scumbuckets anyway? The only way I believe that Trump’s nominees do not get voted in is if the Trump voters are upset or if there’s some billionaire or foreign despot who can block it.

    • HillaryIsAlwaysRight says:

Correct on all accounts. What worries me most is, with Tr*mp loving Christo-fascists in key cabinet positions, a coup attempt in 4 years to keep this regime in power could succeed. Don’t give up. Email your senators and house members and tell them you oppose these cabinet nominations. They have to see we’re still watching.

  2. Miranda says:

You guys. I’m so tired. He’s not even in office yet and I’m fucking exhausted.

Rapist heading up the Pentagon. Rapist AG. Rapist Supreme Court Justice. Rapist President. Goddamn. It wasn’t enough to refuse to vote for a woman POTUS; they’re just fucking MOCKING us now.

Also, those tattoos look like shit.

    • Mimi says:

Yeah, they are. And apparently, not enough people cared. Because we knew this was exactly what he was going to do. His first cabinet was shite, too.

      • Brassy Rebel says:

His first cabinet looks like the “best and the brightest” compared to this crazy train of criminals and hucksters.

      • Miranda says:

Remember how he allegedly wanted to put Jeanine Piro on the SC last time? If one of the Justices retires or dies, there’s no one to talk him down now. Grandpa is senile and watches too much TV. He’s gonna see a MacGyver rerun at 2AM and try to put Richard Dean Anderson in charge of Homeland Security.

    • Snaggletooth says:

I have spent the last few weeks off social media and tv, reconnecting with the things that make me actually happy: nature, literature, walks, a tidy house, taking my kids to activities and enjoying parenting them. I realized that my minute-by-minute, hyper vigilance was not doing anyone any good or keeping me safe in any way. I truly feel my nervous system settling. We deserve some peace and beauty and it will do you a world of good. This is a marathon now so it will be impossible to function keyed up all the time.

      • Harla says:

@snaggletooth, I have been doing the same, disconnecting from social media, especially X, not watching/reading much news and so far my panic attacks have eased up and I’m sleeping better. We have 4+ years to get through so I’m working with my therapist to develop strategies so that I can stay engaged without the endless panic attacks. I don’t know how that’s going to look for me going forward but I wish all our lovely CBers much health and wellness ❤️

Update….. These are stressful times. Thought my plans were progressing along pretty good until I realized my son was dragging his feet helping with the minor house repairs he agreed to. When I told him I know he is busy and I would get someone to give me an estimate, he admitted he was dragging his feet because he doesn’t want me to leave. Whew! gutwrenching. I’ve compromised and decided to visit location for a couple months and he’s agreed to complete repairs, renew his passport and get them for my daughter-in-law and granddaughters. These are stressful times, keep check on your loved ones.

I agree on strategizing for the long run and staying mentally, physically, and emotionally healthy meanwhile.

While I note the insane names flying by, I’m not committing my brain cells to cataloging/remembering their useless bios… they’re all substandard characters… but I’m putting my attention on WHAT THEY ARE DOING. Policy matters, laws matter. They want to distract you with the clown car while trying to dismantle the system. Don’t be distracted imo.

I follow Public Notice for political round ups, Heather Cox Richardson for historicity and reflection, Jessica Valenti for abortion rights, Simon Rosenberg, my local Indivisible group for action points, etc.
Legacy media and social can go figure out why I left…

    • Brassy Rebel says:

Trump’s opponent in the recent election used to put rapists in prison. Trump puts them in his cabinet and is one himself. America chose this. Congressional Republicans enable it. We are so f**ked.

      • Miranda says:

That very thought is just as galling now as it was when I woke up at 3AM on Nov. 6 and glanced at my phone.

      • Trillion says:

@Miranda I hear you. I live in a blue state in a blue town, but there are some Trumpers who are very loud and visible. On election night, a lone house was setting off fire works in the middle of the (sleepless) night and one lone woman was screaming “FUCK YOU” after every explosion. As I laid there, terrified and deeply. confused by what just happened, she screamed for us. I will never forget it.

    • olliesmom says:

They flat out hate women. Only the best…….

  3. Snaggletooth says:

All I will say is that I appreciate getting bites of news from this site with the actual tone it deserves, as opposed to “how will this affect dem’s strategy” type bullcrap.

I fully unplugged from the mind numbing cable news both sides troll game, and would rather actually hear the one or two lowlights of the day that actually matter.

    • Kitten says:

The media coverage is exactly like we knew it would be: infuriatingly mild and tepid. Forced neutrality and benevolence even though we know that these nominees spell impending doom.

I joined Bluesky and my feed is cute animals, art, and politics but without the Trump trolls

Agree with others above that we should practice both vigilance and self/care. How each individual navigates that delicate balance is completely subjective and should never be judged.

  4. Jais says:

Not surprised by disgusted and terrified.

  5. Carol Mengel says:

Sexual predator as president, why not fill his Cabinet with them? This is what our country has to look forward to. And these disgusting pigs will get approved because all the Republicans are scared shitless of Trump. Come January 20 this isn’t my country anymore.

  6. Bumblebee says:

They might make a show of questioning them, but all his picks will be appointed. The military moves at the speed of a snail when it comes to making changes and you know the generals will not be hustling for a news host. So he’s going cause chaos in DC but not any real change in the military.

    • Walking the Walk says:

      yep

    • Alwyn says:

Quite the contrary. TFG wants to fire all military brass involved in the Afghanistan withdrawal and charge them with treason. Generals and lieutenants are shaking in their polished boots as they get picked off one by one. The National Guard will take over for the police in many areas, mostly cities (coded ‘urban’ for the uninitiated), meaning sniper-trained soldiers will have free
range to shoot, shock and awe. The likes of which we’ve never seen.

      • Brassy Rebel says:

The Afghanistan withdrawal (which he planned) is merely a pretext for a wholesale purge of generals loyal to the constitution instead of him. And Hegseth will do his bidding.

  7. aquarius64 says:

What’s really bad is Orange-zilla’s transition team had no clue about this charge before announcing Hegseth for Defense. That means they don’t bother to vet the choices. Cabinet picks go through a mandatory vetting process with the FBI and Trump doesn’t want to bother with it and use private investigators. We see the results.

  8. Sue says:

I think that he’s putting sexual predators in his cabinet to take the focus off of him also being a sexual predator.
What’s terrifying is that he is trying to normalize sexual assault. I am terrified for our safety. I purchased mace for myself on November 6.
Re: the cross tattoo….you guys know that’s also almost identical to the “Iron Cross” that the Nazis used, right?

  9. Lgtrent says:

Rape. He is accused of rape. I think ‘sexual assault’ is not a severe enough term, unfortunately it doesn’t hit people the same as calling it what exactly it was…rape.

  10. HillaryIsAlwaysRight says:

This guy has date rape written all over him.

  11. Meghan says:

My silver lining? These picks are the first round of fodder for the face-eating leopard. Very few, perhaps none, will make it past year one. Most, perhaps all, will become enemies with Trump and cry about how terrible he is while he maligns their character.

  12. Luna says:

Face and sneer of a serial rapist who can’t imagine why women won’t voluntarily have sex with him.
