If I had millions of dollars, I would be getting the hell out of the United States right now. I strongly suspect that we’ll hear more stories like this in the next two months: American millionaires and billionaires getting the f–k out of the country because of the incoming Donald Trump administration. Right now, Ellen DeGeneres is the first celebrity to do it, or at least she’s the first we’re hearing about. Ellen and Portia have fled to England, where they’ve already moved into a home in the ritzy Cotswolds enclave.
Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi have moved to rural England and the couple plans to never return to the United States, telling friends the election of Donald Trump was their primary motivation, a person close to the former TV host told TheWrap.
Though the incoming Republican administration was the cited catalyst, a fresh start couldn’t hurt: DeGeneres has been open about being “kicked out of show business” after reports of toxic workplace behavior at the syndicated “Ellen” show in 2002.
DeGeneres has already moved to the Cotswalds, a rural area in south-central England, the person said, adding that her Montecito mansion, roughly 90 minutes north of Los Angeles, has been pocket-listed or will be listed soon. A representative for the prestigious real estate company she retains did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
DeGeneres reportedly bought the sprawling property in 2019 and she and de Rossi have made it their primary residence, and it wasn’t clear what would become of her other Southern California properties. A spokeswoman for DeGeneres did not immediately respond Wednesday to a request for comment.
[From The Wrap]
What surprises me is that Ellen and Portia chose England. Portia is Australian, and I could totally see them moving to Australia. I would also think Switzerland or Monaco would be in the mix for many American millionaires. Then again, Ellen has spent more time in England in the past decade, and she knows enough about English life to choose the Cotswolds. Princess Beatrice has a home in the area. So does Kate Moss! Benedict Cumberbatch’s parents live there as well.

They will be fine in England, because they’re WHITE AND RICH.
Taking a bet, on when they will be back.
I don’t think they’ll be back at all. I live in England but I mostly stay here because my husband never wanted to move abroad. But the toxicity of Ellen is part of the normal routine here, particularly in workplaces.
Maybe she can produce and star in a show with James Corden, Piers Morgan and Jeremy Clarkson…..
I was just thinking she’ll be fine in a country that embraces Piers Morgan and Jeremy Clarkson!
Those people are media personalities. The reason Ellen and Portia are leaving the US is because of the government that almost 80 million people elected. A president, Senate and House. Not professional provocateur TV folk who many in the U.K. heartily dislike anyway. I really don’t think there’s much room for people in the US glass house to throw stones about toxicity.
goodness, ellen is not a trumper…and lumping all brits as a monolithic racist hateful people is terrible. i said it…
Exactly. Ellen has enough money that the cost of living won’t make much difference. They are lucky to have the privilege to just up and leave.
Good. More annoying celebrities should move away.
I listen to this podcast by this BW who moved to Portugal. She interviews other black people who have moved out of the USA. She says there are a lot of ex pats in Portugal. My second pic would be Costa Rica
Hello @Bluesky do you mind sharing the podcast?
Blaxit Global
Blaxit Global also has a website (www.blaxitglobal.com) with step by step instructions on how to move and what places are best. It’s really well done and worth a look.
All of you are welcome in Costa Rica 🙂
@Jess…Thank you, so sweet 🥰
I watched a few YouTube videos of black families who have moved abroad. My eyes are on the Spanish coast when I turn 55. My Spanish is not good but I got some years to pull it together. Thanks for sharing the info, will be checking it out!
I wonder if the wealthy people who leave the States are also moving their money to non-US locations? I’m sure they already have money in Cayman accounts, but are they moving all of it?
I guess that, as a peasant, that’s one less worry I have. LOL
Will they have to pay two lots of tax (to US & UK) too unless there’s some way round that. I’m sure someone more knowledgeable will say what the deal is.
Yes they have to, I know this from an American woman who migrated to England.
Yeah, they definitely have to still keep filing and paying taxes in the US no matter where they relocate to. Mr. Jaded has dual citizenship — Canadian and American — and he has to file yearly even though he has no income from the states so he doesn’t have to pay anything. He lived in Wisconsin for 6 or 7 years in the eighties but moved back to Canada. It’s a real nuisance.
You have to file US tax forms as long as you are a US citizen, but there’s a cut off to avoid double taxation with most countries… you pay taxes when you cross that… like $100,000/yr or whatever the current cut off is
They absolutely need to file US taxes yearly, but it depends on their income if they will need to pay tax going forward.
My first thought was, well, who can blame them? But, upon further review, it’s the coward’s way out for wealthy celebrities to just leave. An exercise of privilege few people have, so sort of a f**k you to the masses. But it is very on brand for Ellen, who did one courageous thing in her life by coming out years ago, and has shown her true colors ever since.
Why blame her? After everything a large swath of the population voted trump so now America must leave with their choice and those who didn’t vote for him must put themselves first
People with resources will be needed in the coming years. The rest of us are just easy pickings.
Rich white people aren’t gonna be the ones to save us, guys. Let them leave.
@Brassy Rebel…They know that they will be targets for the trump administration because 1. They are gay and 2. They openly oppose Trump and he has declared his intent to persecute and prosecute those who oppose him
You don’t need to be wealthy to leave the country. You don’t need to be white to leave the country and be OK or better off than in the US either as another commenter alluded to above.
Ellen is still an American citizen who has to pay taxes. If she doesn’t physically want to subject herself or her wife to this new administration, I don’t know why she should have to.
It’s quite a process to get a visa to live in another country.
Even if you have money and you’re black or brown, you’re still treated as crap.
When the trains were leaving Ukraine at the start of the war, they were refusing to let black students get on trains.
I’m an American who’s lived in several different countries. There are many channels to getting a visa, work being one of them. But since Ellen most likely won’t get a job, the other option is to provide bank account receipts to prove you can afford to live there. Living abroad is much easier than people realize and it should he noted that the American obsession with race, in particular the notion that being white provides global all access, is not always the case.
Lemon, the racism in Europe is off the charts. Black people who are looking to leave the United States must consider more carefully where they choose to move.
I live full time in France as a Black American woman married to a white Frenchman. There’s privilege in that, but I’m not exempt from racism though it’s rare. I think saying it is off the charts is a bit weird considering your comparison to the US…Like…POC are going to be safer in Western Europe than in the US, racism aside and included. I also didn’t mention Europe specifically, so you can choose to go literally anywhere you may feel safer.
I really dislike some of the comments here that seem hellbent on scaring Black and POC women from just leaving American toxicity. You don’t have to accept being seen and treated as lesser than. You don’t have to sacrifice your health and wellbeing to fight the regime. If you can live a happier life elsewhere, do so.
When people show you who they are, believe them. And the American people have ONCE AGAIN shown us who they are. Stop waiting for them to change. You deserve better.
@BrassyRebel, you are correct. At the same time, if push comes to shove I will willingly use every ounce of my privilege. I can’t blame anyone else for doing the same. When I said to my kiddo who is part of the LGBTQ community that we needed to renew their passport, they said “That’s such privilege, Mom. Do you know how many of my friends couldn’t even afford a passport?” Since then, I’ve paid the passport fees for 7 of their friends. I’ll use my privilege when I can to do what I can, so I can’t cast stones at anyone else doing the same.
Right. They’re just doing what all of us wish we could do.
One last thought on this. There are lots of potential targets for Trump’s retribution who could leave but choose to stay because they don’t want to “obey in advance” or just out of solidarity with the rest of us. They are the real heroes. If everyone who could leave did so, we wouldn’t have a chance of ever saving ourselves from fascism.
Thank you for this, @Sarahlee.
I would leave on November 6 2024 if I could. Nonetheless passports are ready.
I’m fine with not being any sort of hero. I just want to protect my kids.
Kudos to you, Sarahlee. I’m not going to cast a side eye to anyone that makes a decision to do what’s best for their family. I take pride in the fact I was blessed with a “real empathy” card. Remember driving 10-15 miles out of my way to support a small, up and coming gasoline business. Each year donating multiple gifts to “Toys for Tots” and making a concerted effort not to shop at the likes of Walmart. Always on the side of those less fortunate. But, we’re at the stage now where everyone has to look at what’s best for their loved ones.
I don’t blame them one bit for fleeing a country where their marriage will be declared invalid and Lord knows the hate the LGTBQ community is about to experience here. She is White and rich, but being White and rich doesn’t insulate anyone from rape, murder, theft, and hate.
I don’t think people have any idea what is coming here. Whatever your worst case scenario is – it’s that and on steroids. I myself am leaving. It’s not a good time to be a Brown skinned immigrant here. I am a citizen, but google what stephen miller is proposing – a de-naturalization project (where all 4 grandparents have to be citizens or yours gets revoked yes that makes the president elect not a citizen but he’s not the target demographic) that is on the chopping block. The goal is to suspend the constitution for a national emergency and round up people to put them in labor camps. This is not about deportation – it’s about modern day slavery and a population that thirsts for and has a penchant to cause Black and Brown suffering.
When people vote that having nice things is not as important as the people they hate not having those things we need to pay attention. When words like “vermin” “infested” “invasion” “diseased” “criminals” “illegals” start getting thrown around we should all be scared. This movie doesn’t end well. He is operating right out of the hitler playbook. And there are no guard rails to reign him in. There. Are. No. Guardrails.
Maybe I’m a coward for not wanting to end up in an internment camp. But I know how this movie ends and trust me, if you’re Black and Brown or LGTBQ and you can leave I can’t recommend it enough. There’s an entire reddit sub on this – I don’t know the exact name of it, but it was started by a Trans woman who has a list of things to pack if they are coming in 30 minutes (I have been declared illegal and they are coming to arrest me) to if you have a few months. There’s even a sub called Take Fido where I got info on how to take my dog. Hell there’s even going to be a hotline for Karens to harass all the Black and Brown people by giving their names and addresses as suspected “illegals”. With no knock warrants and trump in charge what could go wrong?
I have been sounding the alarm. I have studied too much history.
SIde Eye, I agree with everything you’ve written here. I don’t think most people can imagine how bad it could get. Whatever our problems here, we’ve had political stability for generations. That is about to end.
@Side Eye…. I don’t think you’re being alarmist in the very least. Was reading a few days ago where someone was talking about hitler and how many people were going around saying he wouldn’t do this or couldn’t do that. Well, we all know how that turned out.
@Sideyey: If allowed here, could you link or let me know the Reddit sub? And does it link to the info about dogs?
I agree with you 100% and gathering all the information I can so my husband and I can get out w/our 2 dogs. I’m mad at myself for not starting this process the first time he “won”. No one is safe outside of wealthy, white, conservative “Christian” men.
I know too much too, having been an attorney, and also sounding the alarm. Call me crazy all you want, I inderstand how all of this has been set up and put in place by GOP (and American oligarchs modeling Russia) for decades and nothing will ever be the same here again. Truly a nightmare.
I understand Dr. Who is just a show, but there was one episode where Donna’s neighbours were being rounded up in vans. They were neighbours for 30 years I think, and the minute the new govt. implemented its policies, the vans came for the immigrants. No packing, finding your pets, proof of citizenship or medical necessities, just thrown in a van and driven away. It was shocking to watch, plus Donna’s panic and fear, realizing her friends and neighbours just lost everything in life, because they were Italian, not British. Watching, it was too easy to imagine that happening in WW II, and now I’m starting to think the same thing is going to happen in the US and Canada.
The last time he was in charge, they were separating babies in internment camps.
I am just so flummoxed by the fact he was voted in again. Why?
@Jeb
Sideye is likely talking about r/twoXpreppers. If not that one, you can do a search on reddit for the word “prepper” and then click Community for filtered search results of communities rather than random posts with the word in there somewhere.
I was married to an American citizen and am a green card holder. I am also a black Canadian woman, we got divorced because I had wanted to leave and he a white male dual citizen never wants to leave the US, and with this happening am in the process of sending back that green card and never going down there again.
I lived down there his first term and ended up having a stroke due to the stress. I will never do it again. I am so grateful to be a Canadian citizen so that I can go. Even though its a mess up here and we have fight to prevent our country from going the same direction. This world is breaking my heart.
People that wanna leave should be able to go if they want to but the grass is not always greener on the other side. If you’re a very sensitive person and easily offended than living abroad will be a shock to you since people in other countries can be very direct.
People need to stop believing everything they read. I work in healthcare and most of us at work ar immigrants or first generation Americans. None of us are worried about deportation. This country needs doctors, nurses, pharmacists, etc. Trump wouldn’t deport citizens or residents for the hell of it. A country needs people in order to work. Who is going to replace the labor force? Doesn’t make any sense
Bamaborn you are correct and the parallels to Hitler are alarming! Thank you Derps for linking the sub for Jeb. That’s exactly the sub. the pet one is called Take fido. there’s a ton of info on there.
Lady D i am also Canadian and obtained my kid’s Canadian citizenship certificate during his first term as well. If you have ancestry connected to other countries many countries will extend citizenship to you if your parent or grandparent was a citizen. Even if you were born in the US.
Fabiola – Trump works for Putin. Do i think he gives a you know what about the American workforce? He doesn’t! His mandate is to crash the country. He’s implementing it! We were abroad during the first term and I was watching TV with subtitles on in Europe. Their news reported back then that Putin referred to Trump as Russia’s asset. And make no mistake about it he is their asset. Putin has been on a mission to dismantle democracy and he is doing just that.
Trump recently said immigrants are poisoning the blood of the country. He means Brown and Black folks. Where have you heard that language before? Sound familiar? Remind you of the way hitler talked?
I am out before he is sworn in. That’s with or without selling my condo. i’ll leave my realtor the keys and bounce. i will try to close virtually but if i have to return it will be using a Canadian passport visiting. My child is now applying to Canadian universities when the time comes.
Yes it is serious. I say this as a lawyer. He can do whatever he wants once he suspends the constitution. – all your rights go out the window! At the very least you should be getting to a blue state specifically one whose governor has the balls to tell him to shove it (California Illinois come to mind). If you’re in a red state your governor will not protect you.
So yes leave the country! If you can’t, get to a blue state. Network talk to relatives and friends. Do everything you can to get out.
Fabiola – Melania is not the target demographic. They couldn’t care less about White folks here illegally and instead targeted Black ones (Haitians in Springfield) here legally. This is about White Supremacy and having a White country.
I don’t think this is remotely true
Show us the proof, it’s all over the news, it’s true.
So Trump plans on deporting his own wife and son? Vance plans on deporting his wife and kids? People really believe anything they read.
Not a millionaire, just a “lowly” teacher, and I got the heck out of dodge this summer… Moved (back) abroad to teach (kind of strange timing but I moved back to the US the year trump was elected and now leaving the year he was re-elected). I was terrified of this result and knew I couldn’t live in a country that supported going back in time and stripping rights of its people. Sold my condo, car, etc… and then have had to watch from afar as the unbelievable happened.
I thought I was being too much when I made the decision, but I’m glad that I did it.
Won’t be coming home for the at least the next 4 years. And then I’ll do a temp check and see if it’s a place I’d want to call home again.
It sounds like a totally rational decision, as someone from a country that Americans are moving to (Australia). Good luck!!
Huh. The cotswolds are a cute area but talk about a change in weather.
I’m sure they’ll have a pied à terre somewhere warmer for the winter, I know I would!
The election was 2 weeks ago. No way they applied for a visa, got it, went house shopping and moved in that time. No matter how rich they are. They have obviously had this move in the works for a while and we’re just hearing about it now. I have a feeling this was more about Ellen’s reputation and they are using the election as an excuse.
Louisa- I agree 100%
@Louisa — they probably started looking months ago when the writing was on the wall, not just in a couple of weeks post-election.
Do people read the articles, or just headlines before commenting? It says RIGHT UP THERE that they bought it in 2019.
@Louise that seems to be in context of the Montecito property bc then it references their “other” Southern California properties.
I’m from the UK. Can someone tell me if Donald Trump is a true threat to the absurdly wealthy white celebrities, like Ellen? Wouldn’t their money buy them out of any sticky situation? What could possibly happen to someone like Ellen? I don’t understand.
She is gay and a woman and Clarence Thomas wants to invalidate her marriage.
Do you want to live in a place where you have to buy yourself out of any situation because you are a political dissident or you are LGBTQ or a POC? Like what? I would choose to just…not live there and go somewhere I was accepted.
Um, YES? He’s absolutely a threat to anyone he labels an enemy and that’s literally anyone who denounces him.
And yes Ellen is wealthy but please remember that Trump has the support of the richest and most powerful man in the world. Her wealth ain’t shit compared to that.
NO.
Yikes, just trying to understand!
Although Kathy Griffin is not gay she was harassed by the secret service and fbi just for that parody magazine cover she did during the first term. It was hell for her.
Lots of rich celebrities who were vocal once are going to be quiet this time too.
Girly pop, them MAGA nuts are gonna come for gay marriage faster than they came from the first girl who would blink at them twice when they hit 25.
YES, money is their main motivation, but if you don’t fit their “type” (straight, Christian white cis-male) they don’t care about your $$$ either. A lot of people who thought they’d be “exempt” from Mango Mussolini’s policies are about to go through some things.
It’s a shame that my grandparents (who raised me like their own daughter) and my 18 year old brother are here and I’m so clingy, because I’d be eyeing Panama or Italy to move to right now, and I am so serious. I wish my husband would’ve followed up on his dual German citizenship when he’d turned 18 cause we could go there too. Racism is everywhere- my black @$$ would definitely prefer to experience some “new” types of racism over the hell we’re about to get here in the US in the next 4 (plus?!?!?!) years.
@Sasha
This take just blows my mind.
Um…….lessons from history, perhaps, for answers to these questions? Any story of the rise of authoritarian regimes anywhere in the word, would be a signal lesson as to what is very likely in store for America, at the rate its going right now.
Anyone n America or anywhere else in the world looking on and still wondering “if it could happen here,” are simply not paying attention and are ignoring the lessons from even very, very recent history of some countries on every continent.
When MVP Harris spoke of the fragility of democracy and that it is only as strong as the people’s ability to hold on to it, she wasnt telling bedtime stories.
When democracy is weakened or dies, then what takes its place is authoritarianism, of a type ranging anywhere from the benign to the extremely oppressive.
The way I see it, after trump is sworn in, any card can play, as the saying goes. Best-case scenario, I see America being under a hybrid type of government between a very weakened democracy and a personalist/monarchist/oligarchic regime………which, of course, is trump’s dream.
It wasn’t a ‘take’. It was a question. I said in my original post I didn’t understand.
All true, but Sasha has a point that you can live in a bubble when you are super wealthy (and white). There will be plenty of people who are thinking they will just sit it out. Not everyone with wealth cares about democracy because they don’t see the immediate threat. They care about what changes this brings to THEIR life. Ellen is no Melinda Gates donating buildings or Jane Fonda protesting in the streets.
His far-right white Christian supremacists like Leonard Leo, Supreme Court Justices Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, Alito and hundreds of Trump appointed Federal/state judges are going to come in hard against the LGBTQ+ community no matter how rich and famous they are. And they’re still trying to boot Harry out of the country for dabbling in drugs, even medicinally approved ones. Read this and weep — https://www.hrc.org/news/the-list-of-trumps-unprecedented-steps-for-the-lgbtq-community
@Sasha…yes he is an actual threat to everyone. If you are LGBTQ or have had any opposing words for or about him you are deemed an “enemy from within” and will be targeted for prosecution. He is America’s Hitler. Just look at what he is proposing to do to people living here and to the news media…it is exactly what Hitler did. State run news media is all we will have…we will only hear what He wants us to hear and nothing negative about him at all…but negative about everyone else is fine.
Of course no one knows whether wealthy white queer women like Ellen and Portia are safe or not. They don’t know, either. But they own a house in the UK and don’t feel safe in the US. It’s totally reasonable for them NOT to wait until their passports are revoked and the brownshirts are breaking down their door.
Maybe it won’t happen, there are definitely others with less money at greater risk, but I think this wealthy couple made a perfectly reasonable (not the only reasonable) choice.
Ellen is leaving because everyone hates her now. She’s using the election as an excuse. She bought this property years ago. She just wants attention
It’s been two weeks since the election and that doesn’t seem like enough time to buy a house in another country and completely move there, millionaires or not. Perhaps they had this as a contingency plan for a possible Trump return. Or something else is going on and they’re using Trump as their excuse. I dunno.
It could be completely untrue as well, but as you pointed out this is a very fast turnaround. They could have already owned this property and just decided to make it there primary residence for the near future. It’s not going to hit the news for everyone but I’m sure that there are plenty of celebrities that own homes around the world that will be spending a little bit more time there than they have in the past, and probably a lot of non celebrities that have homes in the Caribbean and Central America. I work with quite a few people that have homes in Mexico and the Bahamas and DR and I’m sure that they will be spending as long as they possibly can there without becoming official residents. None of them have to worry about ( at this point) not being allowed back into the us because their names sound like their native born of those countries.
The piece says that they’ve had the house in Cotswolds since 2019.
I think they’re talking about the Montecito house because the purchase date comes right after discussing how Montecito is up for sale and then they go on to mention E&P’s other California properties in the same sentence.
Ah ok. I wasn’t sure if that meant the UK house or the Montecito one.
They bought the UK property in 2019. They own several houses (at least 2 in Montecito), I think 13 overall. They bought fixer uppers for rich people and sold them after extensive renovations and living there for a while. Increases the selling price when the new owners can brag they bought a house Ellen lived in. She was very popular for a very long time.
In the article excerpt above, it says that they purchased the UK house in 2019. I’m sure they had an exit plan in place so they could set that in motion and bug out quickly just in case the unthinkable happened. Can’t say I blame them. I’d like to get out too.
The story doesn’t say they purchased a home in the UK, only that they are living there. They could be renting a home like the Sussexes did when they were living there before the wedding until the Fail outed the location and they went back to Nott Cott. Ellen and Portia could be renting with an option to buy the property or just staying there until they find the home they want to buy.
@MsIam A literal copy & paste from the article excerpt above: “DeGeneres reportedly bought the sprawling property in 2019 and she and de Rossi have made it their primary residence…” I guess the word “reportedly” is potentially doing some heavy lifting there, if that’s what you’re getting at?
Replying to myself again because I can now see how that “bought in 2019” mention is ambiguous and could mean either the US property or the UK property!
yeah I dont know if that’s a result of any editing or copying errors or if its how the article was written, but I think its referring to Montecito since it then references the “other” southern california properties.
regardless I think ellen has had property in England for a while. Isn’t that partly why she visited H&M after Archie was born, she was in england staying at her house?
If I had the money, I’d get tf outta dodge too. Not England though. Portugal, Thailand or Costa Rica imo!
Me too!!!
You can teach in those places and get paid. Do not believe the lie that you have to be wealthy to leave.
@S808, don’t know your family dynamics, but, do some research. There are many areas abroad, from what I’ve read, that offer stability and a low cost of living. Many people are finding success with jobs online. First, make sure you get a passport (if I can figure how to cover that through Celebitchy, I will). Good luck to you.
Yes, Cotswolds can be great, but after having lived in California in a Balinese super mansion with pools and spa, all that rain and grey can get real old real quick. The English are heroes for living with their weather and it’s a great place to be when you have money. I would choose Bondi Beach to live and visit the Cotswolds, if I was Portia. As an equestrian she will have plenty to do, but I see Ellen get bored.
Part of the article makes it sound like the move is more related to her being outed for bad behavior. It sounds sort of like when the Osbournes were going on about moving.
@somebody
The original bad behavior compounded with her material based on it in which she took on the mantle of victim and all around seemed not sorry for what happened to employees on the show. No lessons of compassion learned.
I believe there were paths of redemption to lead her to whatever she wanted to do in the entertainment industry after Ellen. I don’t think she was interested.
She and Portia seem like awful people unless you are an A-list celebrity, (thank you Diane Keaton for posting that she was always very nice to you).
Most billionaires and millionaires will be staying the US because Trump’s going to renew the tax cuts. Anyway, I saw Richard Eden tweeting about this saying that Ellen is moving to the Cotswold’s where Harry and Meghan had a home. I didn’t know had a home there since 2019. It just sounds to me that they’re going to stay at their UK residence for the time being.
I knew that they were going to take that approach when I saw this yesterday. They are now going to write a million stories about “Are Harry and Meghan going to come back to the UK and visit their friends in the Cotswolds?!” “Are Harry and Meghan longer friends with Ellen and Portia, have the been SnUbbEd?! They haven’t been to visit them since they’ve moved in!” Ugh.
@Dee(2): You’re absolutely right. Richard Eden is probably writing his piece right now.
US citizens who are non-US residents still have to pay US federal taxes by nature of citizenship not residency status — I do it every year that I’ve lived here in the UK. So whether they live in the UK or US, Trump’s tax cuts will still benefit them.
@TQ: I know this. I’m just saying there’s not going to be this huge exodus of billionaires and millionaires from the US just because Trump won the elections. In fact what they’re doing is just selling a lot of stocks in anticipation of the imposition of tariffs.
Did they “flee” to England or are they just there on an extended trip?
Maybe they do plan to move to australia or somewhere else and are just in England now because they have a house there, who knows.
This is why I was so annoyed at Clooney’s op-ed though. The rich always have options. They had option if Biden lost and Trump won. The rest of us don’t. Now I think Harris ran the best campaign she could and I dont think biden would have won, but at the time he wrote that op-ed we didn’t know how things would play out, and this is exactly why so many of us were mad at him.
That op-ed — and Clooney’s arrogance in writing it from his very protected, very privileged perch — continues to infuriate me, right up there with James Comey’s curious and poorly timed public “concerns” about Hillary. Let’s see where Clooney ends up spending the next 4+ years. If it’s primarily out of the country, I plan to project quite a bit of my fury his way.
GOOD LUCK because England is in the midst of is OWN Hard Right movement.
Yeah so true @ALEXANDRAS, too bad people don’t really keep up with international news…
Movement though, not government, which means their LGBT+ rights are, at least, protected for their next 4 years.
People can’t just pick up and move to another country in a heartbeat. Every country has immigration rules and visa requirements. Something is missing in this story.
The article states they’ve had the property since 2019 so it wasn’t quite “pick up and move” to another country. I don’t know about the immigration rules and visa requirements and all that though
People are misreading the article. They bought the house in Montecito in 2019. I googled it to make sure.
It hasn’t been a heartbeat though…It’s been almost 3 weeks. That really is enough time if you already have a home elsewhere and money to take care of the harder things like international shipment of your belongings.
You still have to follow immigration laws. For example, in the US and Mexico you can’t stay longer than 6 months on a visitors’ visa. If you want to stay longer you have to apply for a visa that allows you to live full time. That was complicated and document-intensive and had to be done in Canada. If I had not done that I would have had to go back to Canada at the end of 6 months.
Well, I’m sure that whatever the process is, there won’t be any problem for someone like Ellen or Portia. If the UK has something like the US with permanent residency status, then they may stay there under that. It’s not like it’s some impossibility especially if you have money. Doesn’t Tom Cruise have a home in the UK now?
I don’t blame them for leaving, but I don’t think the country with an infamously compromised press with voters that went along with Brexit/BoJo is necessarily the best option despite them both being wealthy and white.
I don’t know if you’re in the UK but if so I apologise for the incoming exp. I’ll give you the stupidity of UK voters & Brexit but if some random had been leader of the Tories then they would’ve been Prime Minister regardless of whether you believe they’re fit to be in that position. Can only blame his moronic constituents for voting for him. Thankfully they’re out of power but that twat still floats about.
C4 had him on for coverage of the US election and a quote from the Independent newspaper “Krishnan Guru-Murthy said Mr Johnson had been “fired for banging on about his book too much””.
I need some Canadian CBs to get me into Canada. I’ve always wanted to live in Nova Scotia. :))
@Jackson: Canada may not be safe for long. Elon Musk has already started signaling that he’ll buy next the election there
The ford government just gave starlink
100m.
Elon is already here & has been for quite some time.
Trudeau will lose, the election has been bought.
We’ve got 1 year left.
As for Ellen, I find it distasteful that she has hosted a woman who is still being horrifically abused & chose to move to the country responsible.
No, not every person hates Meghan. But the press, the king, continue that abuse multiple times daily.
She’s so wealthy, she could literally buy her way anywhere.
Unless she’s setting up a safe place for the Sussexes to land in the UK, I’d be hard pressed to continue the friendship.
But Meghan is a better person than me.
It is not true to say the election was bought. Lots of Canadians are easily fooled by propaganda and sadly I know Trudeau haters because they are just irrational when you ask how he supposedly destroyed the country.
The conservative leader is an idiot who got help from Modi to get the position but the elections have not yet been called and we have paper ballots. Elections Canada is a neutral entity that manages the process.
We have to accept that there are just dumb Canadians. After all there was the truck convoy idiots as well as the ones with that stupid F Trudeau flag.
It is a form of denial to say an election that doesn’t go to one party is rigged. Unfortunately there are just going to be many Canadians who vote against their own interests. That said the NDP is a viable party that leans more left than the liberals. There are options here. People need to vote. Low turnout gives us bad results. E.g. Ontario.
The polls have been bad for Trudeau for almost a year so Elon has nothing to do with this. The current conservatives have just used social media for years to target Trudeau. And in general most Canadians don’t like a government in power for more than 10 years. Same thing happened with Harper. It is a bunch of factors that have nothing to do with Elon.
@Kokiri
Not “mistreated” or “poorly received”, but “horrifically abused”? Seriously? Then what words would you use for women in war zones and refugee camps?
@Nic919 — thanks for posting this. What many Americans don’t realize is that it’s impossible for someone like Musk to *influence* or buy an election here. We have an airtight national voting process that prevents this and other American tactics like mass disenfranchisement, a crooked electoral college system and gerrymandering in individual states. However that being said, I do think Trudeau has outlived his usefulness. I live in BC where a Conservative nutjob nearly won the election this year but the NDP squeaked in again. Unfortunately I think Poilievre may win in next year’s federal election, but his platform is fiscally conservative, not going after whole swaths of gay, black and brown people and putting immigrants into mass internment camps. Our abortion rights and LGBTQ+ rights are enshrined in the Canadian Human Rights Act. Also, our Supreme Court judges don’t have lifetime appointments, they must retire at age 75. A judge on the Supreme can also be removed by the Governor General at any time “for incapacity or misconduct in office before that time”. No Clarence Thomas’s here.
@Nic
Elon is half Canadian. Of course he & his billions have been influencing Canada. He’s everywhere. It’s strange to think he’s had his fingers in so many pies but somehow left out Canada.
The NDP was once a viable option. Jack Layton was a strong leader. Not so much anymore. The Bloc has more clout imo.
I think you’re downplaying the trouble we’re in, which is another form of denial.
@ jaded
Impossible? The Indian government bought PP his leadership.
Abortion is NOT enshrined. It’s decriminalized. That’s all. For heavens sake.
But I’m out, this is just not the place for me. It never was, I just kept trying in hopes.
@Jaded I normally agree with you, but this is an overly rosy picture of PP.
> his platform is fiscally conservative, not going after whole swaths of gay, black and brown people
His platform most definitely prioritizes going after trans people, especially trans kids. He presses the government to restrict immigration. He is routinely photographed with avowed Nazis and convoy leaders.
As for the safeguards you mention, Supreme Court justices serve for a lifetime until age 75, and the GG has not removed one in living memory (maybe not ever?). Abortion rights and LGBTQ+ rights are protected by judicial interpretation of the Constitution, so a change in judicial personnel could revoke those rights, if the Cons were in power for long enough to secure a hard-right majority.
And RW billionaires own all the major news outlets, which drives low turnout (they told Ontarians the last election was a nothingburger, so we got four more years of Doug).
There is absolutely no reason for complacency in Canada. We would be wisest to work to prevent PP from being elected than comforting ourselves with comparisons to the worst of the US. The absence of an Electoral College won’t protect queer, pregnant, Brown, Black, or Indigenous people under a PP reign.
Listen to @Nic919. They’re right.
@jackson Whatever you do, don’t move to Ontario with Doug Ford in power. I moved from Toronto to Ottawa last year. I would seriously consider Quebec personally if things keep going south in Ontario. New Brunswick has a new Liberal premier (they kicked out the crazy far right guy), so you may wanna look into that province. It is hard to immigrate honestly. I am American born and it took me 4 1/2 years to get PR with an American bf at the time and we couldn’t move until we got PR because no one would hire us prior to that. We applied in 2008 and moved 2012. Now a dual citizen.
I agree with Kokiri—I love YFB and the Bloc leader.
I am voting for Trudeau in the next election because PP won’t get his security clearance when all other party leaders have gotten it on top of his awful slogan rhetoric that doesn’t work on me and that group he was a part of on You tube scares me the most (look into it).
Child please…they’re rich whites. Seems like people forget about Brexit — shit is not all that better in England and a France is always on the brink of some far right infuriation.
I mean we have free abortions, universal healthcare, no death penalty and bi-partisan agreement that climate change is real. Our food also isn’t as full of industrial chemicals. So I would say that actually it’s quite a bit better.
Bracing for the onslaught of making this about the Sussexes
Like many of the people on this thread I cannot afford to move, my parents are aging boomers and I am their remaining only child, AND I work for the Federal government. I would love to move to Portugal. Alas, I will have to wait a very long time. The good news is that my mother has been preparing me for a long time about segregation and what it was like and what I need to do. We’ll see what happens. I have to make do with the system that is in place and find a way to survive and thrive.
Why is Portugal the only European country you Americans seem to have heard of? Kaiser, you probably qualify for a digital nomad visa. We offer one here in Italy now, so come and enjoy la dolce vita!
@Simone I have no problems pointing out the general ignorance the American public has of the rest of the world but to say that Portugal is the only country Americans seem to have heard about shows how little you know about us. Up until very recently, Portugal was barely a blip for most Americans and probably still barely registers with most of the country. That said, Portugal has become the new hotspot for wealthy Americans to retire to because of the climate, ease to get citizenship after 5 years and the beneficial visa situation when it comes to traveling to the rest of the continent. Italy has also seen an uptick in American ex-Pats. Both countries were marketing themselves as a place for Americans to retire to.
Italy has high second home residency taxes and although Ellen wouldn’t certainly have this issue but many foreigners now avoid to buy property in Italy from abroad.
Portugal, until recently, had very lax regulations in terms of buying property. In addition, Portuguese people are about 10 million while Italian are almost 65.
Lisbon has not even 600k people living there, which is less than the population living in Florence, Italy.
Up until 10/23 Portugal’s golden visa program included real estate, so it was in a lot of articles about best places for Americans to retire abroad. I think it was also typically the only European country included.
@Simone, in my case, at least, any decisions that I make involve race. As a Black, American, woman, who isn’t fluent in any language except English, where will I and my limited resources be not only safe, but possibly welcomed?
@ Simone — and others— I welcome your suggestions.
I look at both Portugal and Spain. I am from Southern California. The weather is similar. That is why I look there. I want similar weather as well as personal safety.
There are several countries, in fact an entire continent, where brown people are the majority. Take Europe off the table and consider the rest of the planet. And from someone who’s been there, move race down the list of priorities because if you carry that with you and see it as a burden, others will pick up on it and you might find yourself facing the same issues one finds in the US. At least for the moment, being an American still has a certain cache and I suggest to anyone moving abroad that they start with a clear mind and leave as much of the bitterness this election has brought behind.
@Nicole, I hear you! I’ve been reminding myself that I and my ancestors have centuries of survival skills that have been developed in and for times like these.
I get that we all hate Ellen here but this is like the least problematic, most understandable thing she’s ever done. I would GTFO dodge if I could too.
The Cotswolds is lovely. So beautiful. If I could afford it, I would be there!
Everyone can make their own choices and that’s cool. But I’m not going to let that fat orange bastard drive me out of my country.
👌👌 agree
I’m not leaving. The MAGAs cannot just comandeer this country after one battle. And we need the wealthy liberals to stay and help us mount the response. Yes, let’s take some recoil time to grieve this election. But then comes the planning and the action.
It’s the wealthy liberals like Cloony that got are partly to blame so I say good get out
As a senior trying to survive on Social security I already can’t afford it here and am being priced out of my mobile home park due to them raising my space rent to the point I will have to sell and live in my car. So I am terrified of what Trump and his band of crooks are going to do. Wish I could move somewhere else.
I am so sorry you are in that situation, @Lisa.
must be nice to have money. relocating to another country is expensive. I would not have chosen England
Maybe one of them has family there? Or, more career opportunities than other English speaking countries?
I’m fortunate that I live in a blue state which will fight to not do what the fascists want. I’m 69 and intend to be one of the protestors, because there will be many.
People should wait to see what the recount in PA to be finished. I believe we’re going to be quite surprised.
It’s so funny rich White celebrities moving to Europe due to the political climate. My 87-year-old Black mother said to me a few days ago, “Black folks were able to survive 400 years of slavery and oppression and we stayed put. Leaving is a weak.” And I had to second that—women, gay folks, and immigrants, have survived generations of hate and never made a run for it. I wish Ellen and Portia good luck, but the move is not a look.
@Freddy….much respect to you and your 87year old Mom. But, to be fair, our fore parents did not have the resources, technology or wherewithal to escape the brutality of slavery. Sure, things might surprise us and be fine. But, I think what a lot of people, myself included, are saying is…if I can avoid the chaos they are telecasting, I’ll take my chances elsewhere.
Jeremy Clarkson, Ellen? Is he looking for forgiveness from your friends The Sussexes? I really dislike that man.
I wonder if Meghan took in any more of Ellen’s chickens.
I left the US for Canada 12 years ago (Sarah Palin and the tea party scared me, boy did it get far worse). I file taxes every year with the IRS, but since I pay Canadian, I only have to pay on anything made over 100k. I stand to inherit from my parents when they die and I am still unsure how that will all work out, but I think it is safe to say I have zero plans of returning. All inheritance I plan to move up here.
Australia is a small pond. Most celebrities live here part time.
