Last week, Netflix finally dropped the trailer for Polo, a sports docuseries produced by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. While their names appear in the trailer as producers, neither of them appears in the trailer. I would assume that Harry appears at some point in the series though, right? If only to provide some commentary, although we know that cameras have been around for some of his polo matches. Here’s the trailer again:
Netflix has the money and inclination to do these deeper dives into various sports. Full Swing looked into professional golf and that series was a huge success. Break Point – which focused on pro tennis – was less successful, because (in my opinion) no one at Netflix thought to put actual fans of the sport in charge of the show and you could tell that they didn’t actually give a sh-t about the actual tennis part. Polo looks good to me, because I’ve always been curious about that elite world, and it looks like pretty standard Netflix fare – dialing up the glamour and soap opera drama. Obviously, the British media has been screaming and crying about the trailer for days. Now the Daily Beast’s Royalist columnist Tom Sykes managed to get Prince Harry’s “former friends” and a “senior Hollywood executive” to bad-mouth the series:
Former friends of Prince Harry who played polo with him in their younger years have told the Daily Beast they have been left in “appalled hysterics” by the new trailer for his and Meghan Markle’s “tacky” new Netflix show about polo. One Hollywood executive has cautioned the couple are “running out of last chances” to prove they can make compelling TV that is not about themselves, and speculated their futures may lie in social media influencing.
The trailer for Polo dropped this week, and has been either ignored or ridiculed in global media, a clear sign that Harry and Meghan’s once-bright star appears to be fading. Although their role as “executive producers” is flagged full screen in the opening credits, the cheesy trailer does not feature an appearance by either Harry or Meghan.
One former friend of Harry’s who played polo with him as a teenager said, “It’s hilarious, but not in a good way. It’s so tacky and cringey, it is literally all the worst things about polo. I watched it in appalled hysterics.”
Another former friend said, “The irony is that polo is actually a surprisingly inclusive sport these days. You do see plenty of rich kids but there are also plenty of kids from less rarefied backgrounds who just happen to be fantastic riders who are sponsored by the teams. It doesn’t look like this show is going to foreground that, which is a real missed opportunity.”
A senior Hollywood executive told The Daily Beast: “This looks like it has failed to capture the imagination. They still have Meghan’s cooking show to screen next year but there is very little tolerance for pissing money away these days. It’s debatable whether anyone cares about these two if they are not serving up outrageous stories about the royals. They are running out of last chances to prove that isn’t so. If they can’t, they could try to monetize their fame on social media. Plenty of people would still give Harry a million bucks for a post.”
The trailer was ridiculed by the prominent Daily Mail columnist Liz Jones. Jones was for many years a Meghan sympathizer but has recently turned against the duchess. In one particularly biting comment she opines: “What next? His own slot on the Shopping Channel? How can Harry and Meghan possibly travel the globe, preaching about poverty and diversity and inclusion, when not one black player can be spied… the funds required to run a polo team doubtless outstrip that of Formula 1. How can they lecture us about global warming when one player admits he flies to Argentina twice a week?”
Pick a struggle, you know? Or in this case, pick a consistent criticism for why this series (which has not been viewed by any one of these people) is bad or unwatchable. It’s bad because it features rich people who fly around the world playing polo! Yeah, we get that from the word “polo.” It’s bad because Harry and Meghan are involved yet they aren’t involved enough! It’s bad because it’s tacky and cringey, unlike every single tacky and cringey thing Harry’s brother does! Jesus. This whole Royalist piece reads like William screaming and throwing a tantrum. Polo belongs to Peg!!

“The trailer for Polo dropped this week, and has been either ignored or ridiculed in global media, a clear sign that Harry and Meghan’s once-bright star appears to be fading“
Fading? I thought they were already flops and Hollywood has no time for Harry and Meghan?
Another one talking out of their ass.
Yeah, Sykes saying that their once-bright star appears to be fading is funny. So you’re admitting it was once bright? But how? If they’re already flops? Or maybe it’s still bright and he’s just being a hater? Especially since we all know he’ll be watching the show either way. Sykes wrote critically about William last week so now he has to even the playing field.
How many times can their bright star fade? I wonder how bad it is for one’s mental health when one’s purpose in life is to be lie, to be bitchy and negative to smear and destroy lives. So you don’t need to do any fact finding, or investigation, or ask any questions, because all your angles are pre-determined. Spewing bile for a living has got to be detrimental to one’s mental health. Does one have to be cynical, lacking in happiness and self-esteem in order to carry out this mission? It’s just sick.
The real tell is that someone is trying to say that minorities and poor play polo. Sure they do, Willz!
He’s out in the world making his own money like the rest of us. It’s more than can be said for the rest of them.
This comment is true, actually. Nacho, for example, has been involved with Work to Ride in Philadelphia, which started in 1994. It was mentioned a couple of years ago on one of the morning shows when he was promoting one of the NYC Veuve Cliquot events. I was wondering myself if the series would talk about this at all. Haven’t done a deep dive on what other programs of this type exist, but presumably, it’s not the only one. WTR just hosted their third annual polo classic in Philly in September.
https://philadelphiapoloclassic.org/#who-benefits
https://worktoride.net
And this is true of every single sport. There is no sport that doesn’t put a strain on a poor family. No, not to the extent of polo, but each sport has something that costs a prohibitive amount of money, be it cleats, a racquet, etc. This clearly entitled prick needs to sit down about all the Black people in polo.
Do these people realize how lucky they make Harry look by not having to be friends with them anymore. Who is reading this and sympathizing with the former polo friends. Get some help, sincerely.
I thought Nacho is canceled cause he’s a Trumper. Well known person of influence have to ditch their MAGA friends.
@Aurelia – Can you point me to links please, because when I search the only thing I see are basically reddit threads that say he’s a Trump supporter. Did he like pro trump twitter posts or something? Thanks!
Polo is not a poor man’s sport. For them to scream about “you’re not featuring the poors” is so asinine. He’s featuring Nacho who is a man of color and has succeeded in the sport, no? But it is definitely not a sport that is accessible to most.
“Nacho is a man of colour who has succeeded in the sport”.
He’s Argentinian like many other successful players, and only a man of colour to Americans. If you ask him, he will tell you he’s white.
If they are so worried about the “the poor’s” why don’t they get those two slumlords to fix their shitty homes they rent to their tenants.
Man of color? He’s of European descent. Spain. Most Argentinians descend from Northern Italians and Spaniards.
Polo at the level that Nacho, etc. play is obviously not a poor man’s sport. But not everyone that plays polo is a high level professional making it a career. And the comment referred to people with “less rarefied backgrounds”, not “the poors”, though in fact, the individuals in WTR are, in fact, underprivileged Philly youth (many, people of color), some of whom have gone on to play polo on one of the college teams that exist for men and women (Colorado State and Texas A&M, for example). The commenter also mentioned that players can be sponsored by the teams, which makes sense if the aim is to expand the sport and develop new riders. If you look at the US Polo Association website, there’s a lot going on. I don’t know enough about the funding, but it certainly seems like there are wider opportunities, at lower levels.
What’s curious about that comment though, is that, unlike lots of other remarks attributed in articles to “friends/ex-friends” of Harry, it seems to be fairly accurate, at least for the US, and would have been made by someone with actual knowledge (so I’m guessing not by Will or KP).
They actually really do. My 8 year old plays polo and it’s really more one of those things where people who live near clubs play. Because so many horses are needed in a Chukkah (usually 8-10) most players don’t own their own horses. It’s far far more inclusive than say dressage.
I agree. Dressage is not inclusive, at all. Shout out to Anna Buffini. I exercised some polo ponies for owners at my barn and later played in a few matches. It’s such a different sport than people think it is.
Kids in gangscarred UK neighborhoods, heading down to the rec center for a pony ride and discovering they have a gift… I just don’t see it. This isn’t like golf, which is also a rich mans sport, but at least the initial expenditure is modest, so with minimal sponsorship, any kid can master the game. But polo? Do they really offer that in schools in middleclass neighborhoods?
“Former friend (s)”, the same “friends” who made racist, homophonic, misogynistic comments and jokes in front of and about Meghan? Those friends? The ones that Harry cut out of his life? Yeah, I don’t think that Harry cares one bit about what those “friends” have to say.
I’m pretty excited to watch it and hope that the show is a success!
There are no “former friends” or “Hollywood executive”. This is just Tom Sykes badmouthing Harry and Meghan on his own and William’s behalf to trash Harry and Meghan’s projects, and attributing it to nameless “friends and Hollywood” to cover their tracks.
There are two different groups of “friends” — one is Harry’s ex-friends who are aristocrats, who made crass racist jokes in front of Meghan. Those are ppl Harry no longer speaks to. Then there are the “friends” who don’t exist, who live only in tabloid writers’ minds, who tell them whatever they want to hear. Different “friends.”
That inane royalist column got me to watch the trailer. It looks fun, dramatic, and a little bit “Real Housewives of Polo”. Tom Sykes and that uninspired “royalist” column dump is why I no longer subscribe to them.
The trailer looks excellent. Everything about Meg & Harry is ALWAYS so much better than what the left behind lazies are doing/make believe theyre doing. I can’t wait for the day they just shut up.
Yes this is Peg throwing his tantrum and finding a “friend” to bad mouth it. I hope it gets watched my millions.
The trailer doesn’t look that enticing if I’m honest. But I’m sure Polo fans will love it.
Can you please explain in what ways the trailer is not that enticing?
@julie, I know nothing about Polo. If I didn’t have a natural curiosity about all things I don’t know, I’m not sure this trailer would have reeled me in. I think that’s what was meant by “not enticing.”
@steph: I agree. I really enjoyed Drive to Survive on Netflix but this doesn’t interest me that much. I wish them lots of success but I don’t think I’m going to watch it
I wasn’t enticed either, @Boo. I actually would like to watch a doc about the history and mechanics of polo and I can see fun reality shows elsewhere. I’m not in the demographic to ever be involved in polo (read: don’t have that kind of money), so the actual game part is different and interesting. I will probably watch, thought1
So yet again, the BM prejudges something they haven’t screened? What a shock. When was Liz Jones a Meghan “sympathizer”?
Liz Jones is a tool.
Liz Jones was never a Meghan sympathizer. Apparently the last straw for Liz was Meghan wearing a red dress to the LA Children’s Hospital Gala.
When did Liz Jones become an expert on the financing of polo horses and Formula 1 cars? Never. This article doesn’t even cover the cost of flying/travelling/insurance costs of the F1 vehicles (from 2 years ago).
https://www.grandprix247.com/2022/09/17/how-much-does-it-cost-to-repair-a-2022-f1-car/
The trailer looks fun and interesting. Happy to know that “former friends” of Harry find it “tacky & cringey”. Since, imo, his ‘former friends’, are tacky & cringey.
Still cringing at the WanK’s last video and the 10th anniversary? one. Massengill meets Massengill meets Trojans?
I don’t think they’re angry about the documentary per se. I believe the annoyance comes from the documentary showing once again that when they’re not making public appearances the Sussexes are actually working on projects. The royals (with a small r) disappear for months on end and when they do re-surface it’s to smile and wave at cameras for 30 mins.
It can’t be a coincidence that people are beginning to compare the two working models. One costs the UK tax payer upwards of £500 million with very little to show in return. While the discarded model is proving to be cost effective and beneficial to everyone involved.
Now come on, you know that W&K worked very hard on their “Kate is doing well” video.
You made me laugh, better than cringing at that video. She says she is so much better so why wasn’t she at that dinner. Very rude to the diplomats.
I think you have a point. To me this just sounds like bitterness that someone else’s documentary and work passion project has been roundly forgotten in a month. The Invictus lead up appearances in Canada, the Jelly roll video, and then the polo trailer, coupled with the frankly excellent article in Marie Claire, it’s just the latest example of a pair holding their own in multiple areas and being philanthropic, funny, and approachable without costing a single penny to anyone else.
It was such a bad idea. Kate is doing great, but she’s still not going to work! That video was so stupid.
someone in the comment section called nacho, “man of color” -lol. he may not be germanic but he is of European descent by way of Spain. Although Spain has a diverse history due to the Moors inhabiting Spain. The Moors invaded Italy and Spain and other parts of southern Europe. He has the same olive complexion like Meghan but not as pale as harry making him more colorful than harry.
Former friends? Hi William/KP PR person or just Tom Sykes talking to a fellow royal “journalist”.
I think the trailer looks good & I don’t really do sports documentaries & have no interest in polo.
The press’ pre emptive attacks on all of H&M’s projects is because they want their commercial enterprises to fail like Sophie & Edward’s & for them to be forced back into the fold like the Wessexes were. They could try be less obvious about their agenda.
I’d love to see press side by side reaction on something H&M have worked on that is uncredited v when they know they are behind it. It would be so revealing I’m sure
Agree that the preemptive attacks are because they want the Sussexes to fail commercially and pretty much in every way really. The series could be really good and fun to watch and they’ll still call it a failure. Spare is one of the few things they can’t say thag about. But even when Harry and Meghan have a modest hit that anyone else would be proud of the BM will still call it a failure.
@ABRITGUEST
Your last paragraph is a hoot. Bcos the result of that experiment wd be the same as that of the MAGAts who say they love the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and hate Obamacare & want to get rid of it, bcos they’re too stupid to know that the ACA & Obamacare are one and the same.
How can they criticise something they haven’t seen, and quoting a DM journalist, of course she criticises it, Harry and Meghan are keeping the Fail afloat.
Harry’s former friends are former for a reason.
Harry kept the friends from Salt Island, that he can trust, and moved on, why can’t they.
Didn’t W sell all his polo horses? How can polo be “his” if he has no horses?
I think this documentary will be a resounding success. It humanizes the players and what they go through for this sport. While it may be the sport of kings, it allows you to see the toll it takes on relationships. I got all of this from the trailer. Looking forward to watching.
And they’re fun to look at. Yum.
I agree @maxine branch! I was very neutral about it, but, after seeing the trailer, I’m all in.
Meghan and Harry are not slumlords who rent out homes scoring 1 out of 100 points on a 100-point scale in terms of them being “inhabitable.” Elizabeth was a slumlord. Charles and William are slumlords. However, these “former friends” are appalled by this trailer of a show no one has ever seen, calling it tacky and cringey and hillarious but not in a good way. Apparently, this is one of the Sussexes’ last chances. How about using this energy, “Former Friends,” for people named Charles and William, who will be given a ton of extra chances even though they rent uninhabital spaces?
Being left in appalled hysterics is so dramatic. So yeah, being left in appalled hysterics over a polo show when the Charles and William are actual slumlords really calls into question the mindset and intention of this source. (Cough, Willaim.)
Yes, this poor former “friend” doesn’t possess a “stiff upper lip,” does he? Appalled hysterics over a fricking polo trailer is certainly extra!
“Appalled hysterics” is certainly … a choice. They really are too much. LOL
Jais, yes, the “appalled hysterics” caught my eye, too. I think the former friend needs to go outside and touch grass. The trailer shouldn’t cause hysterics in anyone. There might be a need for counselling for this former friend.
What do “appalled hysterics” look like? These people truly need to get a grip for when something actually bad happens.
I couldn’t give a single fig about polo. Zero interest.
You bet I’m watching that series start to finish just to help the ratings though. 😎
lol same here
So William is the “former friend” who ran to Tom Sykes to wail about how tacky and cringey the trailer is, right?
I think it looks good. It might not break streaming records, but I think it will do well enough and be well received overall.
It makes no sense that they are complaining about this. The Princess of Wales didn’t show up to the diplomatic reception last week, the King and Queen are old and ill, and The Prince of Wales is a rage-monster, but they’ve decided to trash a Netflix reality show? Things must be going very poorly for the Windsors. It won’t be long now, folks.
LOL They’re lobbying a DEI charge *against* the Sussexes! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH 😂
Truly! Now that comment was hilarious!
So they seek out alleged former friends so they can pan the show. May will is one of the bitter ex friends
There is nothing wrong with the trailer . It’s a cookie version of other sports , football, formula 1 .
Those saying it’s tacky etc are just pissed off that The Sussex’s are giving peasants a look behind the curtain.
But letting people have a glimpse of this world is nothing new .
Author Jilly Cooper wrote a novel about this world and called it POLO. .i don’t remember classing her as tacky. No her book It was a best seller and she was made a Dame .
So maybe it’s not the subject matter just the person doing the presentation.
Can’t the Sussex’s just be left alone to jget on with their lives all the criticism is very old and tiresome .
Two former friends and a senior Hollywood executive real names is Tom Sykes. Those people are truly ridiculous.
And yet they’ll be first in line to watch it…
I suspect these are the ‘friends’ who haven’t been invited for a lovely holiday in sunny California because they were racist about Harry’s wife.
I’m sure you are right.
Can any Brits describe horse culture for “less rarefied” groups to this American? Also, any Americans who are part of horse culture here, please.
I honestly don’t know where ppl with less RSS can get into this. Where are they living that’s low cost that has access to the real estate required to ride horses regularly enough to become good enough to be noticed and sponsored? Also, do polo ponies have a use outside of the sport? Could you learn off of any broken in horse?
Steph, in the comments above, you’ll find that there are nonprofits who are working with the “less rarefied” groups to teach polo and some have gone on to polo in college.
The phrase “less rarefied” makes me think someone put their nose up and sniffed when they said/wrote that.
The comment about the environment and flying for the sport annoyed me. Most other sports in the world require the teams/players to travel extensively. Did they have that complaint about pegs when he was president of FA?
Speaking of the environment, I’m sure the duchies’ residential rental properties leaking precious heat into the sky because the slumlord owners can’t afford caulk is bad for the environment also.
Cringe? Cringe was when Edward tried to produce programs and actually got the royals to dress in medeval clothes and be in a game show that bombed horribly@
The latest device to outright lie as a journalist is to invent fake former friends and attribute any derrogatory quotes about Harry to them. This has gotten worse since the Brit Johanna Coles took over as editor.
OH my freaking goodness! You know what documentary I would like to see? Behind the scenes at Buckingham and Kensington Palace as the BRF and courtiers desperately try and fail to take down the Sussexes all day, everyday and in every way and continue to fail! They’re still here. They’re still making things for the world. Give it up! You’re wasting your time. It doesn’t matter if Polo is a hit or not. Successful or not. You. Have. Lost!
After Kate’s ridiculous “cancer-free” video, nobody connected with the British royals gets to judge someone else’s work as “cringey”. I think Polo has a good chance of success, or at least finding a new audience for a sport that is not accessible to many people (like “Drive to Survive” before it). And what will be particularly galling for the Windsors is that this will encroach on their “exclusive” world. Please let there be a camera trained on William when someone inevitably asks him about a player from the documentary…
Whatever. Thanks Tom Sykes for promoting the show tho.
Polo was once ver y popular with Hollywood stars of the thirties. I saw newsreels on Turner classic movies, with stars like Spencer tracy and Leslie Howard playing polo. Film stars like Carole lombard would be in the stands watching.
Anything to keep from talking about the Real Slumlords of Windsor, I guess. Now that would be show wouldn’t it.
Yeah, I’d watch the hell out of that show.
i thought the series was announced as a first season. I think they might cover other aspects of polo other than its stars. Nacho’s program for example. And Nacho speaks in the trailer, so I would expect a broader range of coverage than just the “drama.” Also, the British seem to want to claim Polo as exclusively theirs, but the sport originated in Asia. So, they might even cover the history of the sport, who knows.
That’s what they are really upset about. Harry has produced a documentary about polo but is presenting it as a sport played internationally and focusing on players from the Americas rather than the UK. These British snobs want to claim polo as theirs and are angry Harry isn’t leaning into the British polo scene.
Exactly my thoughts! And I’m glad they made this more American leaning than British to avoid some of those critiques. It makes sense anyway because they are not marketing to a mostly British audience but an American one and this flashy drama style is what works here. It is pointless for the British media to keep viewing H&M’s projects from their narrow and tainted lense. It is not intended for their audience. This is why I’ll never understand why reporters over there don’t focus on the royals they have and leave H&M alone. They are not going to dance to your tune.
They only want to taint everything they do to force them to come back. It’s why they claim that everything that they do that don’t involve mentioning the RF is a failure. They want them to think they need them.
I love how this feels like a Bravo reality TV series but for polo enthusiasts. I will absolutely watch this while knitting or working on a personal project.
Absolutely! I mean, yes it is tacky but so is like 99% of reality television. It is meant to be entertaining, salacious, and silly, with some stakes thrown it. It looks just as tacky as Drive to Survive and Break Point is. It feels like the press is grasping for straws here. Like what is the criticism- reality show appears to be made in the vein of all other reality shows?
I can’t wait to watch.
Tom Sykes is doing what Tom Sykes does. Why do all of Harry’s former friends sound like bitter losers? Also they wanted to see Harry and Meghan in the trailer and they’re not featured, which for some reason pisses them off. Did they expect some dry documentary narrated like an Attenborough nature film? Anyway, it looks like a fun watch.
In all seriousness did anyone expect these people to write anything good or even fair about the Polo series? They have done their best to try to tank every single project or cause the Sussex’s have. It always starts with the lies before anyone has ever seen the finished product. As for people criticizing the soap opera aspect they have obviously not lived a sport with teams and their families, between the competitive personalities and politics there is always drama.. I will be watching and probably rewatching the Polo series.
It’s been explicitly pointed out that the UK royal press is not allowed to write anything positive about the Sussexes. Everything they do will be dragged, whether good, just ok, or amazing. We know this. Also, we’ve seen the content they produce with Harry and Meghan series, and Heart of Invictus. They’re starting to develop a style and point of view. This docuseries seems focused around a specific tournament, the players and what goes into it, not a history lesson. Hopefully we’ll get some of it, but think we’ll see it through the lens of the players and those who follow the sport.
So “Polo” is considered tacky, but the British media had no such criticisms for the cretin Mike Tindall’s lecherous stint on that Australian reality show?
Oh, okay.
I will be watching.
Me too.
“A senior Hollywood executive” most assuredly has no time nor inclination to answer his own phone to discuss something he hasn’t been paying attention and isn’t something they are working on. It shows that whoever is making up this bs has no clue what a “senior Hollywood executive” does. Do we ever have quotes from the executives about other Netflix stuff?
I’m sure these “sources” will be praising William when he announces a two-part doc about how he intend to erase homelessness through the power of polo.
HAHAHAAAHAAAA. So he has conquered American media and society. Since they claimed he is more popular in the US than Harry and Meghan. Just a reminder, Boston and the Celtic fans would like to have a word.
Daniela Elser had the same headline .
I wonder who she copied it from , she plagiarises most of her stories I think .
I didn’t read it and I won’t read this one either .
These so called journalists are just disgusting .
I wish Meghan and Harry all the best in trying to navigate the road of hate that continues to try and destroy their life .
This one makes me angry. Quick vent.
1. I doubt an American so-called Hollywood exec would use the term “pissing money away”. That’s very British.
2. The comment about inclusion and “not one Black player” Inclusion does not apply only to Black people.
3. They always act as if global warming is caused strictly by airplanes. Harry does what he can to offset his travel. He created a whole nonprofit with global reach to do just that.
