On Sunday, President Joe Biden pardoned his only living son, Hunter Biden. It was a full and unconditional pardon for any and all crimes Hunter may have committed in the past ten years. My first, second, third and fourth reactions were all variations of: good for Joe Biden, I’m glad he pardoned Hunter, and President Biden was probably very worried about what Donald Trump and his minions would do to Hunter if Joe didn’t pardon him. To me, the pardon says more about what Pres. Biden thinks about the incoming Trump administration. But to hear Democratic Party elected officials, podbros and seemingly all of the Beltway media, Joe pardoning Hunter was the biggest political catastrophe of all time. Give me a f–king break. The biggest political catastrophe of all time was normalizing Donald Trump’s violent white national fascism for nine years and holding Democrats to wildly different standards. That’s how we got here. Anyway, the NYT had a story about why President Biden made the decision:
Inside a borrowed vacation compound earlier in the week, with its views of the Nantucket Harbor, Mr. Biden had met with his wife, Jill Biden, and his son Hunter Biden to discuss a decision that had tormented him for months. The issue: a pardon that would clear Hunter of years of legal trouble, something the president had repeatedly insisted he would not do.
Support for pardoning Hunter Biden had been building for months within the family, but external forces had more recently weighed on Mr. Biden, who watched warily as President-elect Donald J. Trump picked loyalists for his administration who promised to bring political and legal retribution to Mr. Trump’s enemies.
Mr. Biden had even invited Mr. Trump to the White House, listening without responding as the president-elect aired familiar grievances about the Justice Department — then surprised his host by sympathizing with the Biden family’s own troubles with the department, according to three people briefed on the conversation.
But it was Hunter Biden’s looming sentencings on federal gun and tax charges, scheduled for later this month, that gave Mr. Biden the final push. A pardon was one thing he could do for a troubled son, a recovering addict who he felt had been subjected to years of public pain.
When the president returned to Washington late Saturday evening, he convened a call with several senior aides to tell them about his decision.
“Time to end all of this,” Mr. Biden said, according to a person briefed on the call.
The Times went on to write: “Mr. Biden’s decision has tarnished a storied public legacy…” It didn’t tarnish jacksh-t. Biden is still the same principled man. He’s the same man who was squeezed out by his party, a man who watched as tens of millions of Americans voted for an insurrectionist lunatic. Americans didn’t want Joe Biden’s principles, so he’s taking them back to Delaware, along with his only living son. The Times’ sources also said that President Biden was “deeply concerned that the pressure of the trials would push his son into a relapse after years of sobriety.” I think that’s a reasonable fear, and President Biden wants to do everything to help Hunter’s fragile sobriety. Now, does anyone think that Joe Biden would have pardoned Hunter if Kamala Harris had won? I’m not sure.

Would he have done this if Kamala had won? i dont think so, but am not sure. I know I’ve felt over the past year or so that the anti-Hunter Biden sentiment is ramping up again in MAGA, not calming down (it seemed for a while to me that it was going away but we saw Trump use Hunter to attack Joe at the debate and it worked.) And if Harris was committed to not interfering, this could have played out in a bad way for Hunter.
I think Joe’s concern was that things were going to get worse for Hunter, and that under a Trump presidency there would be no limits to what Rs would do to him to punish Biden.

The first Trump administration had the IRS audit the Clinton Foundation nearly to death — they tied the Foundation up in knots looking for something, anything, that would allow them to shut it down, but that Foundation is totally above-board so there was nothing to find, it was all just years of unjustified harassment by a federal agency — that was pure “revenge” against Hillary Clinton. Anyone who thinks the second Trump administration wouldn’t do absolutely anything to get “revenge” on Joe Biden, including target his son in prison, is a fool.
The NY Times is showing its ass again. Holding the Democrats to a ridiculously high standard. Former drug addicts are not prosecuted like this. Back taxes have been paid. Some people hate the presidential pardon stage of an administration every time it rolls around, it’s part of the system, always has been. It’s not tarnishing Joe Biden’s legacy.
I applause President Biden for choosing his son & family over his personal “legacy” in the history books. (Especially since the MSM seldom talked about his many accomplishments during his presidency.)
Joe knew what the MSM, political pundits and some people in his Dem party would react to the pardon, he still decided that being a loving father, grandfather is more important than sacrificing his son to pretending America is an utopia of democracy & fulfilling the impossible standards set for him & MVP.
When circumstance changes, one is allowed to adjust one’s decision.

Kamala lost because she was held to exacting standards and Trump was held to none. An incompetent man is, according to the media and a small majority of the voting public, a better choice for president than an accomplished woman. Only Democrats have to meet principled standards. Republicans do not. At this point, Biden would have been a fool not to pardon his son, as his son was going to be a major propaganda target for the Magats. The damn president has been convicted of worse than anything Hunter Biden ever did, and apparently that doesn’t matter. The incoming president has pardoned more criminals and incompetents than Biden ever will and then appoints them to high government positions. Any outcry against Hunter Biden is an absolute joke. Come January 20, 2025, it’s every person for themselves in the USA. The idea of principle will disappear completely from political discourse. All the sturm and drang over Hunter Biden will seem utterly ridiculous. I’m so glad I didn’t pursue journalism like I had considered in college. The profession has been killed by corporate interests and engagement metrics. A functioning democracy needs a fourth estate to hold it to scrutiny and that scrutiny has now become dangerous, just as it has in Russia. God help us all. Not enough Americans really understand what could be coming.

Hunter’s the classic f***up kid for his family. Not very bright, substance abuser for years, always relied on big bro Beau or Daddy to bail him out until the pals of old trumpdump put on the screws. Joe’s “career” has hit sundown so he has nothing to lose by giving Hunter a pardon. He might have been a more effective pres if he hadn’t been constantly worrying about Hunter & never missing their daily phone charts. Certainly he’ll enjoy his retirement more now.
Maybe Hunter will finally grow up, wise up, stop his get-rich-quick business schemes with shady pals, learn humility, & do something honorable with the rest of his life. He sure owes his daddy big-time for a gift which can never be repeated.
I’m thrilled he did this. Good for him. I think in the totality of the entire situation, it’s completely appropriate.
You elected a criminal who will pardon increasingly more dangerous criminals and continue to stack the Supreme Court with Christo fascist rapists. It’s exactly accurate that Democrats are held to a wildly different standard. If the left, center, and people on the right who aren’t bat shit crazy want to be able to pause and reverse the decent of the US into becoming comparable with North Korea, you’re going to need to unite! You’re going to have to stop amplifying the random little controversial things all politicians do that prove they are human and not in fact, living saints, and start working on coming together for a common good the way maga comes together for a common evil. Biden, as usual, did the absolute right thing. He should have had Trump arrested after the January Insurrection against our government. America, you made your choice. Shame on you.
I’m so glad he pardoned Hunter. My only hope is that he will use the time left to pardon other deserving inmates.
The Dems need to stop fighting amongst themselves and concentrate on winning the midterms.
