Many world leaders figured out how to “deal” with Donald Trump during his first term. Trump is an idiot who enjoys flattery, pretty pictures and the trappings of fame and wealth. He loves meeting celebrities and royals, he enjoys getting photographed at big events, and he loves getting his ego stroked. President Macron understood this. So did Boris Johnson, who was the British prime minister for a good chunk of Trump’s first term. The Johnson government happily organized some of their biggest diplomatic setpieces for Trump: a state visit, with full access to the Windsors. Trump ate it up. Keir Starmer’s government is basically running the same play – they sent Prince William to meet with Trump in Paris, and it’s more than likely that King Charles and Camilla will have to immediately host the Trumps for another state visit next year. The NY Times breaks down why the UK will be deploying the Windsors to massage Trump’s ego a lot in the coming years:
The Starmer government will deploy the royals: With the Trump restoration imminent and the British government now led by a left-of-center prime minister, Keir Starmer, who could find himself politically at odds with Mr. Trump, the crown may end up being a useful weapon in Britain’s campaign to keep the president-elect’s affections. On Saturday, Mr. Trump forged ties to the next generation, meeting Prince William, the 42-year-old son of King Charles III, after both attended the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. His comments afterward left little doubt that Mr. Trump savors his exposure to royals of any age.
Trump’s comments about Charles’s health: Some interpreted his reference to the king as ominous, while others brushed it off as an innocent case of oversharing by Mr. Trump. Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace, where William has his office, declined to comment on the remarks or on the health of Charles.
The British plan to stay close to America: Either way, Mr. Trump’s affection for the Windsors is palpable. Diplomats and historians said they could imagine Charles being an emollient presence if Mr. Starmer proceeds with his plan to draw Britain closer to the European Union — something Mr. Trump vehemently discouraged in his first term. “Britain’s relationship could become much more strained with the United States,” said Ed Owens, a royal historian. “You could see them using the monarchy strategically to maintain as warm relations as possible while continuing the process of rehabilitating the relationship with Europe.”
Can King Charles really change Trump’s positions though: There is a deep disquiet in London about Mr. Trump’s plans to impose tariffs on trading partners and withdraw support for Ukraine in its war against Russia, not to mention his suspicion of NATO and hostility for the Paris climate accord. Some cautioned that Charles, for all his well-honed diplomacy, will not budge Mr. Trump from these positions. “It’s a useful piece of soft power, but up to a point,” said Kim Darroch, who served as ambassador to Washington during Mr. Trump’s first term. “I’m not sure you’re going to get any big concessions from him because he likes the royal family.”
Charles & Trump both like the Middle East: Sally Bedell Smith, who has written several biographies of the royal family, noted that Mr. Trump had encountered Charles before. He played host to him at Mar-a-Lago during the prince’s visit to Palm Beach County, Fla., in 1988, in which he played polo. And Mr. Trump’s younger brother, Robert Trump, who died in 2020, was a major benefactor of the prince’s philanthropies. Ms. Smith said Charles and Mr. Trump had moved in some of the same rarefied circles, including among the royal families of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which could play into the president’s geopolitical agenda. “Trump is portraying himself as a peacemaker, and Charles has great relations with all those Gulf leaders,” she noted.
[From The NY Times]
They’re correctly pointing out that the Windsors will be used to keep Britain on Trump’s good side, but that the Windsors won’t be able to fundamentally change Trump’s politics or policies. No amount of wining or dining at the palace will change Trump’s plans for Ukraine or NATO. But I think the Starmer government’s math is that the wining and dining doesn’t hurt, and you never know who will be able to reach this lunatic. Macron is making a similar plan of action, and I would imagine there are several European and Asian leaders who are doing the same.

PORTSMOUTH, ENGLAND – JUNE 05: (R-L) Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, Queen Elizabeth II, President of the United States, Donald Trump and First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump prepare to meet veterans during the D-day 75 Commemorations on June 05, 2019 in Portsmouth, England. The political heads of 16 countries involved in World War II joined Her Majesty, The Queen on the UK south coast for a service to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Overnight it was announced that all 16 had signed an historic proclamation of peace to ensure the horrors of the Second World War are never repeated. The text has been agreed by Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Poland, Slovakia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
Why would we think that they’d try to use the Windsor’s to do anything but fellate Mango Mussolini, let alone try to change any of Trump’s political views? With the exception of Charles’ attitude toward organic gardening and some claim of his and Willie caring about the environment, I would not be surprised if The Windsors actually share Trump’s political views which are boiled down to rich white Christian people can and should be able to do whatever they damn well please, and everyone else is a peasant to be subjugated.
The way rich oligarchs are buying up real estate in the US, we’re seeing a return to feudalism. It’s just a race to the top for them at this point to become the King of the biggest pile of ashes. Trump backing out of NATO is going to be a disaster. What’s so dangerous about him though is he’s so unhinged, that some nice canapés and the best seat to a polo match may actually convince him to not back out of NATO right away. I mean, whatever it takes to convince Emporer Baby Fists to just play golf for the next four years and let the Repubs devolve into madness, in-fighting, and money grabbing, to the extent nothing actually gets done… I’m all for it. Please bring on the world leaders who will wine, dine, and entertain him and endlessly challenge him to golf games. It’s probably for the best, national security wise.
Trump can’t just back out of NATO. But what he can do is “quiet quit” it. Basically not appoint anyone to NATO HQ or to the senior SHAPE positions. Things like that. Or appoint people who hate it to destroy it from inside. I could totally see that based on some of his cabinet picks.
Ah, that makes sense. I wonder if a lot of the destruction will be carried out this way at first. Not necessarily bold moves but a lot of silently letting any and all measures of security and decency for the American people and the few remaining embers of democracy, just sort of quietly die out.
Doesn’t trump claim to be 6’3” or so? Willy is towering over him.
Alexa tells me Willy is 6’3”. Maybe the lifts didn’t get packed?
As for the rest…god it’s just embarrassing.
Just googled this out of curiosity and Redditors say he’s 5’9”-5’11” max without his lifts.
It’s quite possible that he has shrunken with age, but I’m sure he always exaggerated anyway.
When you are a trash king and king-in-waiting, you deserve this role. Enjoy.
As future king and queen the government will not let William and Kate off the hook schmoozing Trump, not with tarrifs on the line and if Trump insists. Doubly worse if Elon Musk tags along
That everyone is scrambling to stroke this monstrous fascist’s ego to try to prevent some global calamity is beyond sickening.
@BrassyRebel It’s disgusting. I feel like I am in some awful waking nightmare. Why are we letting this monstrous cretin govern anything, or do anything for him except lock him up in a prison cell?!
Agree. Everyone who’s rich is normalizing him. The ones who won’t be affected by his policies. Seeing Willy with him makes me like Willy even less, if that was possible.
The Willing MAGATs of Windsor. Who could have seen that coming? Well deserved.
Couldn’t have happened to a nicer Tampon, Rottweiler and Bulliam the Incandescent Fanboy.
Let’s see if FakeyKatie Missington will mumble her way out of appearing with Felon 47, or if the lure of shiny objects can prove to be stronger.
Or maybe she will have bad days? Or the school run?
So happy for H&M that they don’t have anything to do with that!
Boris Johnson’s government didn’t invite Trump for a state visit. It was Theresa May’s government, much to the consternation of a good proportion of the British public, myself included.
