Jeremy Renner: “The Anti-Taylor Swift”

I know most of you couldn’t care less about Jeremy Renner, but he’s starting to get right up there with Gerard Butler as far my imaginary boyfriends go. And this video (below) just added to my undying affection for this kid. The backstory is that Renner, Anthony Mackie and Kathryn Bigelow were scheduled to be interviewed together (for The Hurt Locker) on the Today Show, right after the Oscar nominations were announced. Some smart producer kept the camera (not live) on Renner before the interview started, just as Renner was watching his name being announced for the Best Actor Oscar. The look on his face is truly adorable – he looks like a little kid for a second, and he and Mackie share a huge, manly bear hug. It’s lovely:

New York Magazine is calling this Jeremy’s “Anti-Taylor Swift moment” because they describe his reaction as a “genuine moment of human emotion.” I agree that he was genuine – but I tend to think Taylor is too. Whatever:

In the wake of Taylor Swift’s phony, faux-shocked, “What, me?” reactions during her numerous acceptance speeches, it’s good to be reminded that genuine moments of human emotion still exist in Hollywood.

While there weren’t many surprises to come out of this morning’s Oscar nominations, Jeremy Renner just so happened to be on the set of the Today show when he got the news that he had scored his first Academy Award nomination in the prestigious category of Best Actor. Cameras were rolling as a clearly thrilled Renner launched into an impromptu bear hug with co-star Anthony Mackie, reminding us that not everyone is as jaded about this Oscar race as it may seem.

[From New York Magazine]

I love the underdog stories of the Oscars. That is, until the underdogs start engaging in some cut-throat Oscar campaign that makes me feel queasy. But I don’t think Renner will do that. He seems like the kind of guy who would be very happy just having received the nomination. Once he got off the Today set, he released this statement about his nom: “This is more exhilarating than I could have ever imagined. What a tremendous honor from the academy – a blazing stamp in the passport of an artist that can never be taken away and will always be cherished.” Aw…

seriously I couldn´t care about Taylor Swift for one second, never even heard her music…but she really MADE IT I suppose, tho only in the U.S.

    which is kinda weird nowadays

Jeremy renner, well, he seems as genuine as one can be, despite the fact he is an actor.

  2. meme says:

forget taylor swift. TEAM RENNER here. I hope Hurt Locker all the awards it’s up for because it’s an amazing movie and he is fantastic in it. and oh that impish little face when he hears he got nominated. priceless.

  3. juiceinla says:

I really thought I would not give two turds about the Oscars this year, but between Firth, Bridges and Renner- I don’t know who I want to win more!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Clooney gets it, I will lose my mind.

  4. Ron says:

What’s up with the Taylor Swift hate? Whnen she won album of the year she literally jumped up and down, like one would expect from a 20 year old. Talk about a stretch comparison. Congrats to Jeremy much deserved.

  5. Giz says:

I remember watching Mr. Renner in Dahmer. It was obvious even then the guy had talent. However, the film creeped me out!

    Good luck Jeremy.

  6. Andrea says:

Taylor Swift has the same smile as the Joker.

  7. Maddie says:

I have to second with the why the hate with Taylor Swift, I don’t like her music but she is a talented young woman, who only months ago everyone was loving on.

Now that she is winning all these awards she’s being hated on.

  8. Snarf says:

It’s the “What!!! Who? Me!!!!!???” reaction she keeps giving that people are getting sick of. She’s won awards previously for this piece of work so to be nominated and win shouldn’t be that huge of a shock to her. Being humble is an asset, fake modesty is not.

As for Remmer, it’s great this is happening for him. Hope he enjoys the ride, saw The Hurt Locker over the weekend, and was blown away.

  9. meme says:

i don’t hate taylor swift i’m just tired of her. she’s a talented young woman. now let’s get back to TEAM RENNER… i will projectile vomit at the screen if bullock and clooney win and i think they are going to. bleech.

    AGREED!

Haven’t seen the Hurt Locker yet. But I will. The buzz has made me curious.

    Hey Kaiser,

You were right about this guy toiling and paying his dues. I just saw an old “ANGEL” episode where he played a Puritan Vampire. Good episode, good actor……I hope he gets A-list treatment after this…

  12. Camille says:

Is this guy married? Because if he isn’t and as he seems to be the latest ‘it’ man in HW, then expect a gossip item about him and Aniston being seen on a date in 3..2..1..

  13. M says:

    Loved the movie, love him!

  14. fee says:

I have adored him since that Angel episode marky mark mentioned and since SWAT. Good for him-I’m happy he’s getting some recognition.

  15. mollination says:

HAHA! Ohmygod the Taylor Swift Backlash. This is so fucking predictable my eyeballs hurt. What is UP with people? Everybody rallies and then those SAME exact people all reach the threshold at the same time (usually the moment when love for the person/thing/film whatever is universally recognized) and then they always have to be the first to jump off the bandwagon. Taylor swift’s smile has been the same since day 1. Yet no one said anything then. People can be so g-ddamn trite.

  16. Amy says:

    Taylor is overated

  17. Andrea says:

mollination: Most people didn’t even know who Taylor Swift was until the Kanye incident.

  18. Sarah says:

What’s the deal with Taylor Swift anyways? I always thought she is some sort of a music genius, especially at her young age, since she got all those awards. Now I eventually got to listen to her songs for the very first time during the Grammy’s… and was sooo disappointed! What’s all the fuzz about her? Those songs were more than random!

On a lighter note… kudos to Jeremy, he seemed genuinely amazed. :o)

  19. Carrie says:

Love him, love the film, love Katherine Bigelow.

I choose to imagine that Colin Firth had the same reaction when his name was called- adorable smile and huge hug!!

I love it when the academy recognizes people who have been so good for so long/new faces- and he’s both!!

I too can’t possibly choose between Firth, Renner, and Bridges- I’m honestly such a fan of all three!!

  20. flicketyflack says:

“HAHA! Ohmygod the Taylor Swift Backlash. This is so fucking predictable my eyeballs hurt. ”

Well her team should’ve predicted it when they sent her out on her showmance with Taylor Lautner because that sure accelerated the process, not to mention her really poor live singing which dates back to well before the Grammys (SNL, CMA, and so on and so froth).

IMO the Kanye West incident only postponed the inevitable backlash and it’s a backlash being brought on by massive overexposure and overrewarding. Taylor seems like a nice precocious girl who can write a cute lyric but she is relentlessly commercialized (rereleased albums, remixed songs for pop crossover by a major label, dress line, greeting card line, and so on and so forth), she has put her own personal life out there for the tabloids (Joe Jonas, various tween video idols, Taylor Lautner, possibly John Mayer), and her team has been drumming up the hype without interruption for a couple years. One thing that hasn’t happened: her singing hasn’t improved. That grimace on Stevie Nicks’s face said what a lot of people had been thinking and now there’s an outpouring.

Back on topic: Jeremy Renner has not been the beneficiary of the kind of relentless PR hype and he comes from a small indie film. He isn’t exactly your likely success story, at most he seems like a career character actor. So this has the feel of a “let him enjoy his moment because he deserves this”. Good for him.

  21. archiepelago says:

The Clooney nomination feels like a publicity vote (ie, so that people will watch the actual televised show). I’ve read other editorials that have commented on the power of the celeb nomination (warranted or not) to draw in those viewing figures. I love Jason Reitman but this movies does not belong in the Oscar race. It was an interesting piece but the two main characters were basically unlikeable and the movie’s overall message was not to my liking (won’t go into it in case I spoil it for someone who hasn’t watched it). I repeat, NOT Oscar worthy considering the other bodies of work being celebrated.

  22. Iris says:

he was pure sex in SWAT, which was sadly the last thing I’ve seen him in

  23. Tru says:

Taylor is overrated and I was sooo disappointed when I took my lil cousin to see her live..BIG mistake.

    The kid cannot sing.

Mr. Renner is a great actor and not bad on the eyes..

  24. Jane says:

I agree with everyone who said Taylor Swift sucks on singing live, I was really mad for Stevie Nicks because she had to have a duet with her.

@Iris: i didnt realize that he was in SWAT until you mentioned it lol he was really HOT in SWAT

  25. rosalie says:

Jeremy Renner had played his roll like he was a debombing pro; he must have loved playing that part for he made it seem very real for his audience to feel his strength and his confifdence in himself while disarming the bombs.

    2/7/10

  26. Ahrean says:

He’s my favorite actor and it’s about time he got some mainstream attention because the man, besides being HOT is T-A-L-E-N-T-E-D as HELL.

Netflix the following and tell me you disagree:

    12 and Holding
    Neo Ned
    Dahmer
The Assasination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford

For him, the nomination is the win itself because he’s finally getting the attention he deserves with this, but he could pull a Penn and take it and that would be even better.

  27. Carrie Whitcomb says:

Taylor “NOT SO” Swift is NOT a country star and never will be. She is immature, under talented, over rated, and irritatingly annoying. No wonder every boy she has dated has dropped her, she needs to see a shrink to work out her problems.Personally I wish she would move to Hollywood permanently with the rest of the idiots in LaLa Land, and ge the hell out of the Nashville area. Country she AIN’T and country she will NEVER BE. She is a creation of her agent who doesn’t know a thing about country music or else he would not have signed her.A pop-tart/teeniebopper is NOT WHAY COUNTRY MUSIC is all about. Bye, Bye, Taylor “NOT SO” Swift.
