My family discovered Bluey just before the pandemic started, and those earlier seasons really lifted us up together through some of those darker times. Since it’s the best children’s television program to come out maybe ever, Mr. Rosie and I both enjoyed watching it too. Now, just when it once again feels like we’re entering into dark, unknown times, the Heeler family has come through yet again and given us something to look forward to. On Tuesday, Disney and BBC Studios announced that a full-length Bluey movie is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2027. Ba da da da da ba da ba da movie!
There’s no question that Bluey has been one of the most popular shows for little kids in recent years, and now it’s about to get even bigger with a full-length movie—for real life!
The Australian animated series is being made into a feature film, according to Variety, with a global theatrical release from BBC Studios and Walt Disney Studios scheduled for 2027. Following a run in theaters, the movie will be available to stream on Disney+ and ABC iview and ABC Kids in Australia.
Written by series creator Joe Brumm, the Bluey movie will star the same voice actors viewers already know and love from the show, including Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack. The music will be familiar, too, as series composer Joff Bush is providing the score. Richard Jeffrey, who directed the first three seasons of Bluey, will co-direct with Amber Naismith producing.
“I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that,” said Brumm in a statement. “I’ve always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together.”
He added, “I’m excited to continue to partner with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell and the team at BBC Studios, and Dana Walden, Alan Bergman and Disney to bring this new Bluey story to the big screen.”
Since Bluey’s debut in 2018, the show has launched a line of toys, a touring production, a podcast and an album. It’s been nominated for a Critics Choice Award three times and won two Television Critics Association Awards (2023 and 2024).
I’m so excited about this news and fully believe that the Bluey production team will do a great job with a full-length movie. My only concern is whether this means that we’re not getting any new Bluey content until 2027. (Right now, they’ve been releasing batches of “mini-sodes” that are one to three minutes long; regular eps are seven minutes long.) After 30-minute special episode, “The Sign,” the showrunners were adamant that we’d get a fourth season, so will the movie be a standalone thing or a bridge in between seasons a la The X-Files: Fight the Future? Ahh, I don’t want to have to wait until 2027! Even if my own kids may have aged out of Bluey by then (they’ll be 13 and nine), I will absolutely go see the Bluey movie in theaters by myself.
As a 57 year old who has watched “Bluey” EVERYDAY since 2021 and who saw the “Bluey Live Experience” this past summer
💙💥💙…I am ELATED regarding this news❣️
@Rosie, my kids will be 12 and 14 and even if they don’t want to see it in theatres, I bet they will watch it at home with me. Bluey was that perfect thing for our family and it’s just so comforting.
We should find a day when it comes out and all the adults go to the movie to see it, without the kids! It could be a Bluey Movie Movement!
I LOVE THIS IDEA!!!
The best children shows come from Britain, Canada, and Australia because they create for the kids. When Disney or any part of the U.S. corporate offices get involved they include coordinated merchandising. I hope the movie is good for the originators sake.
Our kids are about to finish uni, but they will watch with their little godchildren. Of course they’d watch too for no particular reason at all.
But it’s nice to have small kids around for situations like this, when it could be potentially embarrassing to have to admit you watched a show/movie for kids!
And hubs and I would be watching because everyone else is…
😇😁
Joe Blumm has released a statement saying this will be instead of a season 4
Nooooo
We only got into Bluey last year after our daughter was born but became fully in love with it and how good it is! But 3 years is so long to wait and then just get a movie instead of 50 different episodes to watch!
