Enquirer: Anderson Cooper is gay & adopting a Haitian baby

CNN Heroes An All-Star Tribute

As far as I know, everyone pretty much acknowledges that Anderson Cooper is gay. It’s no big deal, it’s just there, without Anderson ever confirming that one little detail of his personal life. The New York Post, Gawker, the National Enquirer and other media outlets have all run stories at various times insinuating, confirming or joking about Anderson’s homosexuality, about his boyfriend Benjamin Maisani, and about their big gay love shack. Actually, I wrote about their big gay love shack several months ago when the Enquirer ran a story about it – The Coop and his boyfriend have converted a firehouse. Complete with a pole. So to speak.

So, first comes love, then comes love shack, then comes… the formal adoption of a Haitian orphan, of course. That’s what this week’s Enquirer alleges anyway – the article isn’t online, but Gawker is running a story based on Enquirer’s reporting called “Anderson Cooper’s Casually Outed in Haitian Adoption Tale”. Who cares about the boyfriend? I want to know about the baby!

The National Enquirer says Cooper and his boyfriend will adopt a baby. Even crazier than that, the National Enquirer is talking about Cooper’s boyfriend on the front page. Even your mom is gonna see that at the grocery store!

It seems like the media coming out process is nearly complete for Anderson. On the front cover of the new Enquirer — which gives top billing to the latest heinous revelation in the John Edwards saga: he beat his cancer-stricken wife — is a headline that matter-of-factly refers to “Anderson Cooper & boyfriend.” Unlike when Page Six made a veiled reference to his relationship with Benjamin Maisani, this story is putting it out there in every supermarket checkout and news stand in America. However, much like the NY Post story about his big butch firehouse of love, it seems this story is just an excuse to discuss the details of Coop’s personal life.

The Enquirer doesn’t even address whether or not Cooper is in the closet, they just run with the very correct assumption that he is gay and in a relationship with Maisani. Now it’s not just going to be the New York media types and the gays who are hip to the story, but the Enquirer’s very middle-American, straight, and older readership — the same people who watch him on CNN.

After saving one on national television, Anderson is said to be bringing home a Haitian orphan of his own and will raise it with Maisani. Cooper’s transformation into Madonna is complete!

Anyway, the friend says that the baby will be moving into the with the couple in the fire house and this may keep Anderson from flying all over the world with his prissy parka to cover stories. Still gay bar co-owner Maisani is “totally capable of keeping things under control while Anderson is away.”

If this is true, than good on Anderson. There are hundreds of thousands of kids who need a home, and one with two, attractive, wealthy, homosexual gentleman is better than most. It seems like a big move for the anchor, who is reticent to talk about his personal life in public at all, to make such a bold move after so much hubbub has been made about his coverage in Haiti. After all, he always says he wants to cover the news, not be it. Rescuing a kid from the rubble was definitely news, and taking one home for good would be another valid news story.

Then everyone would really start looking in Cooper’s personal life. After this much attention why don’t you just come out and address the issue once and for all, Anderson, so that we can stop talking about it and fixate on something else. You want to raise your child in a home that prizes honesty, integrity, and forthrightness, don’t you?

[From Gawker]

I really, really hope this is true. I’ve been watching CNN’s coverage of the Haiti situation, and Anderson and Sanjay Gupta’s reporting is devastating. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Anderson (and perhaps Sanjay too) ended up trying to adopt some of the thousands of children left orphaned by the disaster.

Despite promises from the State Department that Haitian adoptions will be streamlined and prioritized, not much is happening. Thousands of adoptions are currently in a state of limbo because of the disorganization of both the American State Dept, the Haitian government, and the general concerns by many watchdog groups regarding child trafficking. I guess what I’m saying is that if Anderson really does want to adopt, he might be waiting for a long time.

I am very happy for him/them – I just wish Anderson and Benjamin had the right to legally marry – if they should want to.

  2. CadieBelle says:

That is I wish they could legally marry AND have their marriage recognized by the US government, which currently does not recognize any same sex marriage, thanks to DOMA – The Defense of Marriage Act. We have to dump DOMA – it is discriminatory and hateful.

  3. mel says:

Gay or not I love Anderson Cooper. He’s hot!

  4. Ursula says:

His boyfie is hot, him, not so much, can see the appeal, but he doesn’t work for me.

If he officially comes out as gay, it will affect his journalism, then he will be pushed to be the unofficial gay spokesperson, then he will not be competent to commentate about equality because his view will perceived as biased.

  5. lena says:

i don’t want anderson to be gay…simply because i want him for myself!

  6. DoMaJoReMc says:

First of all, VERY GOOD FOR ALL INVOLVED!

Second, Anderson Cooper has MORE than proven his journalism capabilities..Period!

Third, A Mother really knows deep in her heart if her child is gay, whether or not s/he confirms it. I say let them be. They both seem very happy and I don’t believe ANYONE’S sexual orientation is mine or anyone else’s business.

  7. Bodhi says:

then he will not be competent to commentate about equality because his view will perceived as biased.

Does that mean that straight journalists are perceived as being biased?

Anyhoo, I think it would be wonderful if the Silver Fox were to adopt! I don’t know about Sanjay, though. He & his wife had a baby recently (one of the reasons he passed on the Surgeon General’s office) & i think the new baby makes, like, 3 or 4 for them. Not that it really matters… Yes, I am a giant CNN nerd…

  8. Essie says:

I don’t care if Cooper is gay and I don’t care if he adopts. I do care that there are people who want Haitian children to be adopted quickly. There is a reason the U.S. State Department is hesitating with allowing adoptions from Haiti. Didn’t you read about the American church group that tried to smuggle 33 babies and small children over the border to the Dominican Republic? The group had actually STOLEN the children from parents who were made homeless by the earthquake by telling the parents the babies would be taken care of and given back to them when things got better. These people were going to give these babies away to Americans and the babies had parents!! It’s right that the State Department has stopped allowing adoptions from Haiti for the moment. There are bad people out there and these children need to be protected.

P.S.: I doubt Anderson will adopt a baby right now anyway. It would cramp his lifestyle. The man is always packing up and flying off to some dangerous hotspot. Not the lifestyle to bring a baby/small child into.

  9. I could see this happening. He stayed in Haiti alot longer than I expected him to. Even through the State of the Union address.

  10. Seer says:

@ Essie: I agree with you. Just the other day I was saying the same thing you were. There needs to be some sort of regulation, becuase there are some people (not all) who claim they’re doing things for the good of all, when they’re actually in to score for themselves or even the organization they represent($$$$).

I’m glad for Anderson Cooper. Everyone deserves to find love and happiness.

  11. Kait says:

Haiti doesn’t allow single males or gay couples to adopt.

  12. Icecat says:

I just wish all of these media outlets, gossip sites, etc.. would stop OUTING people if they are choosing to live a private life.

I LOVE LOVE the Silver Fox and yes I think he is gay..BUT until he comes out and says it – Leave him and his sexuality alone people…

This headline could’ve easily said: “Anderson Cooper adopting a Haitian baby”

  13. Cheyenne says:

Kait is correct. The following are NOT allowed to adopt in Haiti:

    1) Single men
    2) Gay couples
    3) Straight couples with more than two natural children

    NE’s story is false.

  14. meme says:

I love Anderson and wish him all the best. He’s a class act.

  15. Cheyenne says:

I wish these tabloids would stop fabricating bullshit. The requirements for adopting from Haiti are available to anyone with access to a computer. Check it out:

    http://haitiadoption.org/Qualifications.aspx

If Cooper and his partner are adopting from Haiti, they would have to do a private adoption, and I can see all kinds of complications from trying to go that route. The Haitian government has stopped all adoptions for the time being because of people trying to kidnap Haitian children out of the country. That American church group Essie referred to should all spend a long time in jail.

  16. Maritza says:

They make a cute couple, I hope they do adopt a kid or two, why not? I think Anderson Cooper is so sweet, he would be a great father.

  17. lucy2 says:

@Essie, I agree too, and am glad there are big restrictions at the moment. Hopefully when everything has calmed and gotten a bit organized, adoptions can begin again.
I like AC. If he chooses to not discuss his private life, then that’s where it should stand.
I do think it’s sad that so many countries and groups don’t allow gay couples to adopt, especially when there are so many kids around the world who need good homes.

  18. Cheyenne says:

@lucy2: ITA. I work in a child welfare agency and we have placed several children with gay couples. We have found gay couples have provided excellent homes for hard-to-place children who may have medical, emotional or developmental problems that straight couples often don’t want to be bothered with.

  19. irishserra says:

I just wish Cooper was straight and mine! ;o)

  20. The Bobster says:

I’m reminded of the old MJ joke: Why rent when you can own?

  21. dk88 says:

I wish I wasn’t the only one who can’t stand him. I find him pretentious and fluffy. He has a dumb ape look and he comes across looking confused and dumb to me. he’s supposed to be a serious newscaster and yet he seems to have a lot of time to go to hollywood hot spots and wear clothing too young and hip for him. And I thought that all, long before I found out, he grew up a spoiled rich kid. I think he got that job through his connections. I know I’m the only one who feels this way haha

  22. Sincerity says:

Going in and scooping up Haitian children at this point is a “bad idea” unless it can be proven that certain children were already orphans before the earthquake. It’s always a good idea to proceed with caution especially when the welfare of a child is in question.

If Anderson Cooper is in fact trying to adopt a Haitian child, I wish him and his domestic partner the best of luck; however, it seems the Haitian government may have issues with his chosen lifestyle.

  23. TaylorB says:

He has never denied that he is gay, he simply has decided to keep his private life private. He once said he didn’t want his personal life splashed about on PageSix etc. like his mothers (Gloria) and the other Vanderbilts lives were. He said that he always hated seeing that stuff in the papers when he was young.

  24. MYOB says:

With all of his money he can’t buy himself a pair of lips to offset that big nose?

  25. Aspie says:

I wish him the best. He’s a class act!

  26. lanette says:

I hope this is not true.

  27. kelly says:

if he didnt come from so much money.. we wouldnt know who he was.

    brat

  28. imo says:

Actually Kaiser, he’s already denied the rumors about the adoption. Here’s a link for anyone that’s interested http://twitter.com/andersoncooper/status/8643736946

  29. imo says:

@ MYOB…It doesn’t cost a thing to have some class, maybe you can try getting some 🙂
@ Kelly, may I ask what makes AC a brat?

  30. david tracey says:

he is a man. men can be gay. this is pretty basic especially if not straight. logic 101. however i think it’s pretty sad that people in the u.s. and the world think that is important. some parts of the bible need serious revamping. happy easter!!!
