I totally understand the allure of Malibu – the proximity to the beach, the vibes, the ultimate California dream. But Malibu is experiencing another catastrophic wildfire, the second in five years. The Woolsey Fire of 2018 decimated a huge part of Malibu, and people spent much of the past four years rebuilding. Currently, the Palisades wildfire reached Malibu and Santa Monica, and there are 3,000 acres of destruction, with everything burned to ash. So many celebrities have lost their homes. Including Mel Gibson, who has long had an estate in Malibu. He lived there with his wife Rosalind and their son Lars. Rosalind and Lars managed to evacuate before the house burned down. Mel was out of town when it happened – he was in Texas, appearing on Joe Rogan’s show.
Mel Gibson revealed that he lost his Malibu home in the Los Angeles wildfires while he was in Austin to record a podcast interview with Joe Rogan. In a telephone interview on NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports, the Mad Max actor tried to remain upbeat as he spoke at length about the “devastating” feeling of losing the home he had lived in for 14 to 15 years. “Obviously, it’s kind of devastating. It’s emotional,” Gibson said to host Elizabeth Vargas. “You live there for a long time, and you had all your stuff. You remember George Carlin talking about your stuff? I had my stuff there, and it’s all like, I’ve been relieved from the burden of my stuff, because it’s all in cinders.”
When asked about where he was during the fire that consumed his home, Gibson said he was in Austin, Texas, at the time to record an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience. “I was doing the Rogan podcast… And [I was] kind of ill at ease while we were talking, because I knew my neighborhood was on fire, so I thought, I wonder if my place is still there. But when I got home, sure enough, it wasn’t there. I went home and I said to myself, well, at least I haven’t got any of those pesky plumbing problems anymore.”
Gibson said that his wife, Rosalind Ross, and their son, Lars, were safe as they had evacuated their home. He added that fellow actor Ed Harris’ home, down the street from Gibson’s, was also burned down. Despite the devastation, Gibson said his chickens survived the fire.
Pushed by Vargas, the Braveheart star offered more insight into what he lost in the fires. “I had a lot of personal things there that, you know, I can’t get back…All kinds of stuff, everything from photographs to files to, you know, you know, just personal things that I had from over the years, and clothing, you know, pretty cool stuff, you know, but you know that can all be replaced,” Gibson said. “These are only things. And the good, the good news is that, you know, those in my family and those I love are all well, and we’re all happy and healthy and out of harm’s way, that’s all I can care about, really.”
How the hell did the chickens survive? Were they in a coup? Did Rosalind release the chickens before she evacuated? While Mel Gibson is a piece of sh-t, I feel sorry for everyone in Southern California right now. I can’t imagine losing all of my “stuff” and being so sanguine about it – I wouldn’t be able to function, honestly.

It is a very very sad situation going on in California and while I can’t stand Gibson it’s sad to lose your home and all the things you’ve collected from family over the years. All the things that you treasure are gone (except for your family). Yes they are just things but it doesn’t mean you won’t miss those things. I truly hope the fires will be extinguished soon and I hope all the thousands of people who have lost their homes (even those I don’t like) will come through all of this and be ok. It’s going to be hard but I wish them the best .
I’m glad the chickens survived. That’s the most positive thing I can say about anything related to him.
Amen.
So glad for the chickens! And his wife and son.
No humility from Mel though. All those words read like macho man to me.
Nothing about family photos and memories. Just HIS stuff
Flee, chickens, flee! While you have the chance!
Good for the chickens, Rosalind and Lars. That fire was a monster and the losses will be felt for a lifetime.
It’s funny how racism, hate and stupidity will turn an attractive person ugly as sin. Gibson is an ugly old sucker.
I can kind of sympathize. Several years ago, there was a small kitchen fire in the apartment above me and my whole place was flooded by the water coming down from the ceilings. The people above didn’t have a lot of damage, but I had to move to another apartment for 3 months until my place was renovated. I didn’t lose everything, still had most of the important stuff, but I threw lots and lots of things away – papers, furniture, clothes, linens, boxes of yarn and projects. It was chaotic and upsetting, but then a kind relief to start fresh in a renovated place.
I forgot this guy was married to a woman half his age. Ah, Hollywood…
It really would suck to lose all the irreplaceable shit and I would imagine a lot of actors and celebs collect valuable memorabilia related to their field etc…those items that have sentimental value that we all hold dear. If I were Gibson I would definitely store that stuff in my 12,350-acre ranch in Montana, my 6 bedroom house in Australia, my tropical hideaway in Costa Rica or on the private island in Fiji that I own–you know, just to be safe.
Talked to my cousin and husband last night and they fled their bungalow in LA due to the surrounding damage and smoke. I’m happy they have friends they can stay with but she said the devastation is like nothing she has ever seen before. She said whole blocks, entire communities–GONE. It is all so incredibly sad and I feel so much for every Californian that’s suffering right now.
I’m glad your family members are safe!
My cousin hasn’t been in contact with me since Wednesday. Her father-in-law, whom I’ve never met, kindly reached out to me this morning and her friends & family to tell us she was safe but her phone died and she’s in an area without electricity. I think she’s basically in a tent somewhere 🥺
Omg, Gilly. I am so sorry—your poor family 🙁 Really happy your cousin’s FIL got in touch—at least you have a little peace of mind to know that she’s ok.
They must have taken the chickens with them? If they left them there and the flames didn’t kill them, I would think smoke would. This must be devastating to all the small wildlife animals, insects, and pets.
A chicken coup? Haha, they all joined together and overcame the fire and said, “Not today, fire! Not today!”
I always think of the area around a chicken coop with no vegetation, so there probably wasn’t anything to burn. And it may have been far enough away from the house that the fire missed it altogether.
Years ago I worked in Malibu and did go to Mel’s home, it was quite nice but a lived in family home, the property was gorgeous though. I was in Malibu when a fire burned through about 28 years ago and the devastation was unreal, people lost everything.
Isn’t there already a housing shortage in CA? Where will all of the people who do not have second homes go?
