This week’s Goop is good one! Which is nice, because the last several Goops have been sucking, almost as if Gwyneth Paltrow was too constipated to write something interesting. Anyway, this week’s Goop is a “Make” and Gwyneth gets Paul McCartney to write it! And he even included a really nice photo of himself and his two (older) daughters, Mary and Stella (below). The whole thing is about getting people to sign on for “Meat Free Mondays” – all for health reasons, environmental reasons, and animal-cruelty reasons, I think. The complete Goop newsletter will be online in a little bit (I get the newsletter in my email, because I’m special), so here’s the Goop site, and here are some of the highlights:
I am not a vegetarian, but when I heard about “Meat Free Monday,” I was intrigued. I had never thought about the environmental impact of raising livestock. Below are the facts presented by Paul McCartney, our favorite vegetarian cookbooks, and a meat free dinner recipe from Mr. Chow to get us off to a good start.
Love, GwynethFrom Paul McCartney:
my family and I launched Meat Free Monday in the UK, an idea which has been gaining support from people like Tom Parker-Bowles who, after a lifetime of denigrating vegetarians, recently wrote in his Daily Mail column, “I wince at the memory of my boorish antics” and who pronounced himself “intrigued”. Another supporter is Al Gore who stated that initiatives like Meat Free Monday “represent a responsible and welcome component of a comprehensive strategy for reducing global warming pollution and simultaneously improving human health.”Even a number of schools have already done this in the UK with great success. The town of Ghent in Belgium has a meat free day and, amazingly, Sao Paulo has one even though Brazil is a large exporter of meat. In Sweden, the government is now labeling food to give the consumer the opportunity to understand the dangers of indiscriminate food consumption and there are many more examples appearing online.
The point is that so many people these days are looking for ways to “do their bit” for the environment. We recycle – something we never would have dreamt of doing in the past. Many people now drive hybrid cars but most people understand that we cannot leave this important issue to the politicians of the world. Recently, at the Copenhagen Conference for Climate Change, this issue was not even on the agenda and so I believe it is once again left to us, the people, to do it ourselves.
It’s amazingly easy to take one day in your week, Monday or any other day, and not eat meat. When you think about it, there are so many great alternatives, for instance, in Italian cooking, so many of the dishes are vegetarian already and Thai and Chinese cuisine are the same. All it means is that you have to think a bit about what you’ll eat that day but, in actual fact, far from being a chore, it’s a fun challenge.
Having been a vegetarian for over 30 years, I find it very simple and in fact, tasty and most enjoyable.
So there it is! Next Monday – don’t eat meat and do your bit to save this beautiful planet of ours. For more information, ideas and lots of meat free recipes, go to the official Meat Free Monday website.
Thanks Goopsters! Thanks Gwyneth!
Rock on ya’ll!Paul

I kind of like this idea. It’s not arrogant or mean, it’s just like, “Hey, just try it, it may work out.” As opposed to “Vegetarians are the best, meat-eaters are the devil.” The vegetarian recipes included are kind of funny, though. Goopy shares a recipe for “vegetarian fried rice”. Which, you know, is just fried rice. You don’t have to call it “vegetarian”. If it had meat in it, it would be “pork fried rice” or “chicken fried rice”. Mmm… pork fried rice. Meaty Thursdays.
I used to really like her until she turned into a self-absorbed holier-than-thou snob.
Hey, it’s friendly, informative, and not condescending! Oh wait, Goopy didn’t write it, that’s why.
I’m not a vegetarian, but I probably only eat meat 2-3 times per week. Does that mean I get a Goopy Gold star? 😀
From what I’ve read, not all meat has the same environmental impact (I think beef was the worst), so this is a little basic, but I guess they’re thinking small steps add up.
YAY! I love Paul McCartney! I am a veggie for 18 years or so and it is really easy once you get used to it! One day a week for most people is doable I think…
HATE GWYNETH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
actually, when you order things in most places in China, you actually cant get away with just saying you are a vegetarian because cooks interpret that to mean you dont want big hunks of meat in the dish but will still use other animal products to flavor the dish. you actually have to tell them you are buddhist before they understand you want NO animal products in the dish. it may be getting better now in some larger cities where the ‘vegetarian’ craze has caught on, but when I was living in Beijing, you had to jump through all kinds of hoops to get vegetarian fried rice!
I applaud this. We try to do a few veggie meals every week for health and environmental reasons.
Livestock production produces more greenhouse gases than all of the transportation in the world (cars, planes & boats).
Paltrow looks great. Am I the only one who thinks that she has had a tiny nose job? Not a major overhaul, just a small tweak to narrow her nose?
Going meatless just takes a little more thought and maybe some preparation. A stirfry with veggies, tofu & brown rice is one of my favorite meals.
I. Just. Cannot. Like. This. Woman.
I usually have to order vegetable fried rice. If I just say fried rice, I believe they usually do pork. I’ve been a long time vegetarian, and think its great that people who like the idea but can’t handle life without meat are trying to at least cut back.
maybe she should have sir paul write all her goop entries. then they wouldn’t be so…well, so goopy.
I’m a ferocious, bloodthirsty carnivore but even I don’t eat meat every day. It’s just not possible or necessary. Some days we eat meat, some days we don’t, and it has nothing to do with having a consience or protecting the environment- also, environmentaly speaking wheat and many other vegetarian crops cause just as much damage to the environment as many meats. Deforestation, the use of machinery which uses fuel etc plus destroys the habitats of many animals, pesticides which flow into rivers and kill river flora and fauna. There’s no green option here, and even if we were all to eat organic vegetables, there would not be enough food to go around even for the people who are currently not starving. Organic food is slower and more labour intensive to grow, therefore, we can’t all eat it or there would be a lot more starving people in the world. But back to my comment- who eats meat every day and can’t go without it for one day? Who?
@ Snapdragon! I know! Paul is, as usual, sunny and funny. Meat free Monday has been simple for me, though there maybe an egg involved. Hummus, anyone?
Meatless Monday has been a movement on Facebook for awhile!
She had never thought about the environmental impact of raising livestock? For reals? She is one enchilada short of a deluxe dinner.
Stella is unrelentingly ugly. What a mug!
@anoymynous: Where did you read the even if we only grew veggies that there would not be enough to feed all the people in the world? I ask because I am reading Skinny Bitch right now and the authors say the opposite, that if we used the land for cattle and instead grow crops, we could feed everyone easily and end world hunger. I am not being a smart *ss, I really want to know. As I read the book and read stories like this… well I haven’t ate meat in three days. And trust me, when I started reading- I thought- oh please, don’t tell me that BS about not eatting meat!
And the cattle are still gonna die, meat has more substainable healthy nutrition than crops that can fail or are unavailable to consume in most of the world. The predator/prey condition goes on with out mans’ liberal weak mind interference.. learn about real life and wildlife and before you foolishly make the farmers, fishermen and ranchers suffer you idiot Goobers. I want Gwyn and Paul to go on ‘Survival man” and eat vegan off the land for a few days.
@bros: You are absolutely correct. Also, even here in the states when you get “Chinese” takeout, if you don’t say “vegetarian,” you get pork. You have to specifically say that you don’t want any animal products, and even then they smile, nod and give you meat. **sigh**
@BEEBEEC: Might want to do a little more research. Actually, there may be a lot of nutritional value in meat, but our bodies do not absorb most of that nutrition, which is why body builders have to eat so many grams of it in order to benefit.
However, with the right combination of a few greens, our bodies get the enzymes necessary to create protein.
Wait, Gwyneth is NOT a vegetarian? What with all her blather about her superior macrobiotic diet, I was sure she was. Hmm. She must be stopping off at KFC after her Pilates sessions.
I cannot believe how many unintelligent people there are out there. serving meat was a rarity a couple of generations ago. people appreciated what they had. now animals are brutally torchured so that we can eat meat 3 times a day- of which about one third lands in the garbage. it’s just not right and in the end the human race will have to pay big time.
Hmm, McCartney’s other daughter’s ok, but that Stella . . . she’s just hard to look at. Her face is all sorts of weird. And I don’t get why she’s a successful designer; her clothes are not cute!
Gripes aside, I’m all for this initiative.
haribo, I understand what you are saying but really, a couple of generations ago people did not eat meat because THEY WERE TOO POOR!! I’m probably older than most people on here and when I was growing up, we had chicken on Sunday and beans/rice and veggies the other six days. In fact, the first time I had a hamburger sandwich was my graduation day when I went with a bunch of kids to a restaurant and we had burgers and fries . . . totally foreign to me!! I didn’t eat a steak until I was 22. I grew up very, very poor and I had no idea I was eating healthy!!
Anyway, I usually have two or three days a week when I don’t eat meat. It’s easy to do and I know it’s good for me but I don’t think I could give up meat entirely. I think it’s foolish to think anybody could get people of the world to give up meat. As someone said, growing grains and other crops is kind of iffy with the weather and all and we need to have meat are suffer starvation. OR, we can all do what the Maasi do . . . drink cows blood!! They don’t eat their cows, just drink their blood!!
@MM . . . I don’t think Stella is bad looking at all. In fact, she is quite pretty in person. Also, the clothes she designs are lovely. Not arguing, just stating my opinion.
Macca gave up meat b/c he was eating lamb w/Linda and saw lambs outside playing on a hill and watching Bambi. I swear. He doesn’t give a fig about the environment but he does care about animals. Gotta give it to him. However Paltrow just deboned (wrongly) a chicken carcass on goop video. Why did anyone ever think she was a vegetarian is beyond me since she doesn’t really have the discipline to do anything for long b/c she copies and emulates others. If only she was intelligent enough to know how silly decent, smart people think she is. Silly people defend her also. Stella and her use each other.
Paltrow’s make up person put the highlighter in the wrong face and man does she need eyebrows!
I love meat, bloody, juicy, gorgeous meat; but we eat free range, mostly organic animal products and if we cant afford them that week or whatever, we just go without. I think a lot of people are actually letting go of the ‘meat=real meal’ old skool attitude and moderating their habits.
BTW, every farming model is different vis a vis its environmental impact and sustainability. Vegetable monocultures are no more virtuous than grass-reared livestock operations, just for different reasons. Our home vege garden is pretty organic and we still get excellent yields so the person who thinks spraying the everliving shit out of everything is the only way to feed people is pretty uninformed.
But how much do I hate the Gwenethffff? Heeps man, heeps. Dont you love being preached to by greedy resource-sucking hoes like this?
Wish we could have a Hypocrite-free Monday!!
How about…”you eat what you want & I’ll eat what I want”? Make too much sense?
I didn’t know Gwyn ate meat…or food. I thought she existed on water w/ a lemon thrown in for flavor.
I’ve been a strict veggie for 33 years. Some countries deal with it better than others. I went to Italy a few years ago. I was given for my main course a plate with 3 cheeses which included an enormous hunk of parmesan!
Don’t Catholics already have a meat-free Friday?
Sorry, but I’m a meat eater and always will be. When I don’t have it I actually crave it.
And as if there will ever be a time when there are no animals being raised for food. Just not gonna happen, people.
You eat what you want and I’ll eat what I want – just don’t shove it in my face and tell me how bad I’m going to end up from eating meat.
Is “Meat Free Monday” the day of the week that her husband cheats on her?
I think this is a great idea. Im not a huge GOOPY fan but i do agree with her and sir Paul on this. Just for the health benefits alone everyone should ditch meat at least once a week if not many more. They pump these animals up with so many unnatural steriods etc its havoc to the human body.
Its not about saving the animals or vegans trying to make us feel bad. Its about being healthy (meat is awful for you) and its about how much the meat industry and breeding cows for meat comsumption just wreaks total havoc on our environment. Its not good for the body or environment regardless of how you feel about the animals – feel good about yourself and dont eat this crap. Those who say they crave it are just craving protein and there are many other ways to get that.
Fuck Goopy in her smug ass.
But what about blue plate monday @ yo sushi, does that count?
Now if only Sir Paul could convince her to stop wearing and promoting fur. I’d be much more interested in his email to her regarding that issue.
If only Sir Paul could convince Gwyneth to disembowel herself and post the film on youtube. I might subscribe to Goop’s final issue then1
Thank you, very useful. I wasnt really a big fan of Spinach for many years ( lie, I hated the stuff), but after shacking up with a vegan I kind of had to put up with it, and have gradually come to absolutely love the stuff. Spinach curry is now my absolute favourite! I even found adedicated spinach recipes website which is my new favourite site now, you should take a look!
