Selena Gomez recorded a tearful message about Trump’s mass deportations

Selena Gomez was a long-time supporter of Kamala Harris – Selena is a California resident, so Harris was her state’s AG and senator before the vice presidency and last year’s presidential run. Selena endorsed Harris for president and even posted on her social media about voting-by-mail. Selena has also been a longtime advocate for the Mexican-American community, the undocumented community and the immigrant community. Her grandparents came to America as undocumented immigrants. So… yeah, Selena is really torn up about what’s already happening in the second Trump administration. ICE has already conducted hundreds, if not thousands of raids, and many people are being deported without any due process. On Monday, Selena posted this tearful message on social media:

My heart really goes out to her, and to all of the families who are being ripped apart. I pointed out Selena’s politics and her political work in the opening for a reason – this is not one of those “FAFO” cases where a Republican-voting Latin voter is shocked that the leopards are eating her face. Selena knew what was at stake in the 2024 election and she voted to protect her community, and now she’s heartbroken that millions of Americans voted for mass deportations.

Selena later deleted this video, but it still became one of the stories of the day. So much so that the new ICE Director Tom Homan was asked about Selena’s video. His response? “We’re going to do this operation without apology. We’re gonna make our community safer.” Disgusting sh-t.

  1. Absolutely devastating!!! Sadly I don’t think that trump has reached the bottom of the evil that he wants to do to our world. She took it down from her site and I wonder if it is because of the crap that will be thrown her way by trump and all his evil minions.

  2. Sue says:

And of course, right wing news outlets and sites are having a great time ridiculing Selena for having compassion for other humans.

    • pottymouth pup says:

many of the comments on those sites and posts on RW SM are saying that she should be denaturalized because her parents were anchor babies that should not have been eligible for citizenship under the 14th Amendment which means she isn’t eligible either

      these people are craven

      • DK says:

Cool, then the Trump kids better be next since we know Melania, and I’d guess Ivana as well, were here working illegally, and lied on their visa apps. So send those anchor babies Jr., Eric, Ivanka & Barron right back.

      • Who Were These People? says:

Wish we could deport the Trump span but their sperm donor was a US citizen.

    • otaku fairy says:

It’s all they know how to do. They see qualities in others that they lack and they ridicule them.

  3. Lightpurple says:

Conservative pundits are covering her video as the biggest news of the day, all to distract from the news that Trump plans to stop all federal grant funding today. They’re all too busy attacking Selena to realize their disabled 24 year old is about to lose SNAP benefits and their own job at the lab is about to end for lack of money.

    • DaveW says:

I live in New England. Massachusetts sends more money to the federal government than they get back in grants, services, etc. Personally, I think MA and other states like this should turn around and keep their $$ of Felon47 wants to play these games.

      • Lightpurple says:

As a fellow Massachusetts resident, I would also be happy to see what we send to the federal government stay here for 4 years. Sorry, red states, the welfare stream is turned off. Do let us know how you fare without funding for critical access hospitals; highway repairs; emergency cleanups; and children’s healthcare

    • Ashley says:

The NYT estimates it’s $3 trillion in federal grant money — almost half the whole budget. When we’re talking grants, it’s operating funds for whole industries, including education. The only thing safe is Medicare/Medicaid.

As a non-American, I don’t know how you all are functioning today. I can barely wrap my head around it. This is going to tank your economy; the tens of millions of people affected won’t be able to buy necessities. I don’t understand how anyone could make these kinds of decisions.

      • KC says:

Medicaid is not safe. This is a really common mischaracterization in the media. Medicare covers people 65+ and some people with disabilities. Medicaid covers low-income people and low-income people with disabilities. Most Medicaid funding comes to the states in the form of block grants. Republicans have been trying to gut Medicaid long before running for president was a gleam in Trump’s eye.

      • DaveW says:

Medicaid/Medicare…for now. I think Medicare will ultimately be safe because seniors vote, AARP has a big cadre of lobbyists and they are excellent at grassroots advocacy and getting their members to show up.

        Medicaid…bigger concern.

      • Lightpurple says:

Republicans have been trying to turn Medicaid into block grants for 3 decades now. They’re constantly tinkering with funding & federal share and eligibility. States are allowed some flexibility in eligibility and scope of services, which means in red states, eligibility is extremely limited and only bare basics emergency services are covered.

      • Who Were These People? says:

This regime abetted by private interests will try to privatize all of Medicare using the Advantage model. Further, Biden’s hard-won price negotiations on common prescriptions are being rolled back. Nothing is “safe.” And, plenty of old people voted for Trump – twice.

    • DaveW says:

They are all on such a power trip right now, as well as showing their ignorance of how government works while making completely arbitrary decisions without a thought of the impact.

If he/they delay on reinstating federal grants, etc., although I also assume it’s in part to allow the billionaires time to figure out how to get more of the government pot of $$, I hope they are prepared for the increase in unemployment claims and impact on the economy. Having worked on/under federal grants, many of them are done as reimbursements. Meaning an agency is awarded, for example, $100,000. They are not cut a check for that amount, the agency submits reports/expenses to draw down on the amount. And not all agencies receiving federal grants have big bank accounts, endowments, reserves, to float salaries and other operating expenses while the government gets their schitake together, potentially meaning layoffs, unpaid rent, etc. Oh, and it’s not just the libs this will impact (eyeroll). And while it’s a while for mid-terms, many of these people who work and may receive services, also vote.

      • Ciotog says:

They know exactly what they are doing. This is evil, not stupidity, at work.

      • Veronica S. says:

They’re also trying to get people angry and riled enough to lash out. They’re chomping at the bit for an excuse to enact martial law or the Insurrection Act. All of this is a targeted specifically to hurt certain people and outrage the rest.

  4. Abby says:

I’ve been thinking a lot about ICE agents. What kind of career is it where this is what you have to do for your job? I cannot picture the person who agrees to be one for work. The moral injury every day would cripple someone’s psyche.

    • aang says:

I agree. Decades ago I considered taking the test to get into my city’s police academy because I knew someone who was doing it. I really thought about using deadly force against a human being in order to protect property. I decided I could never do that. That person is retiring now with a huge pension and healthcare but the damage to the soul would not make it worth the money in my opinion.

      • Who Were These People? says:

These careers attract authoritarian personalities and you have plenty of those in the USA.

    • DaveW says:

I could be remembering wrong, but I thought I read an article that a lot of ICE employees are former military who didn’t have any other skills when they got out of the service, or liked the structure and testosterone rush of the service but for whatever reason didn’t want, or couldn’t cut it in, a military career.

      • JEB says:

I was a career prosecutor-from traffic court up to being an assistant ag trying to uphold convictions on appeal for the worst of worst crimes, mainly brutal murders & SA, before the Supreme/highest court in two different states. My 15yr legal career consistently showed me: ACAB. What finally burned me out was working on appeals to keep actual sex offenders or heinous murderers in prison but not always able to be successful because the cops on the case were dumb, racist and/or deliberately cheating and violent. Their grave mistakes hindered my ability to seek and achieve justice for the most vulnerable. ACAB.

    • agirlandherdogs says:

Unfortunately, all areas of law enforcement are catnip to people who enjoy being able to exercise that kind of power over people…

    • QuiteContrary says:

I watched a video of an ICE raid last night and the smirk on one of the agent’s faces filled me with rage.

These guys are on a power trip and they revel in it.

  5. Kitten says:

I hate the rash of shit she got from the RW trolls for this.

The core problem of all of our social media platforms becoming safe spaces for bigoted, angry assholes to out vice-signal one another is that this toxicity and hatefulness compounds and perpetuates. It is a monster that feeds itself and eventually we become the thing they are and the thing they want us to be. I can feel it happening with the return of ableist, racist, misogynistic and homophobic slurs with no accountability for the people that use them. The hate is spreading like a wild fire and it’s gross to watch Americans not only embrace but proudly flaunt their worst instincts, masks fully off.

As far as what Selena says, the cruelty is always ALWAYS the point. Attempting to revoke the 14th Amendment, mass raids in working places (interesting how “freeloading” immigrants are always caught at work) and all of their other attempts to remake our country in their image–it’s all for the sake of cruelty. Those dumb fuckers will finally learn that no WWC American wants these jobs–they are grueling, low pay, bad working conditions, long hours and mostly non-union. This will be a case of FAFO and our economy and businesses alike will pay the price for it.

    • Looty says:

You took the words right out of my mouth. Amen.

    • DaveW says:

That’s a really good point…they are raiding workplaces, where those lazy, etc. people (sarcasm!) are, you know, working. Even if they are getting paid under the table they are buying food, shopping at, for example, WalMart (thus keeping WalMart stockholders happy), paying rent, etc. There is ample evidence that they contribute far more to the US economy than they take.

    • pottymouth pup says:

there are already reports of people with hispanic last names receiving notice of benefits being canceled because “they are not citizens” (they are citizens) and being purged from government systems that handle medicaid/medicare and staff at agencies don’t know how to handle the situation because the people’s info has been removed

    • MMRB says:

      RIGHT ON THE MONEY

I remember years and years ago my mom told me the reason there weren’t many white north american people working on board a cruise line, was because they wouldn’t take the jobs, because they were beneath them. Low paid, long hours, non union bad working conditions, etc. etc.
So, lets see how quickly people figure out how difficult it is to work at your local donut shop or convenience store or nail salon.

      • DaveW says:

More likely the donut shop, convenience store, etc. will have to cut service hours, close, or the owner will be running themselves ragged because those North American white people still won’t take those jobs.

      • Kitten says:

@ Dave-EXACTLY. You see it with both large and small agricultural companies–wages are up because of the deportations and a need to attract new labor but white Americans aren’t filling the void. As wage pressures and labor shortages drive up costs, inflation emerges and costs increase for essential goods and services. But yeah, the dumbasses on the Right think that they’ll just deport workers, force companies to increase wages and benefits, and create new jobs for Americans but that’s not how any of this works.

And we have precedence with the meatpacking industry in Postville, IA raid in 2008. Workers were deported, companies filed for bankruptcy, town lost a large portion of its population, the cost of meat went up, and the local city council declared Postville a humanitarian and economic disaster area.
It cost $6M to decimate a town–all because we hate people that aren’t born here. These raids are shortsighted, costly, impractical, self-sabotaging and completely unnecessary but they’ll still do it because, cruelty.

    • otaku fairy says:

      So true.

  6. trillion says:

I hate so much that (ignorant) people/Trumplickers equate undocumented Latinos with violent criminals, as if removing them is making us safer.

  7. Brassy Rebel says:

We are in a hellish place right now, but the consequences of Felon47’s actions will be felt soon enough. Then, even his own supporters will face a choice between continuing to support him while he causes great harm to them or turning on him. He is doing illegal, unconstitutional things like withholding money which Congress has already appropriated. And these deportations have already caused large chunks of the Hispanic community who make our society function in so many ways, especially providing food through agricultural work, just go underground. Food shortages and price spikes are sure to follow. So, there will be a reckoning down the road. It can’t come soon enough.

  8. DaveW says:

I’m NOT advocated/supporting these raids…I do find it telling that he’s not telling ICE to raid those chicken/beef processing plants down in Arkansas and the like. You know, the ones where Sarah Huckabee Sanders abandoned child labor laws so kids, many of illegal immigrants, could keep her plant owning supporters happy.

And the Pope needs to excommunicate “good Catholic” JD Vance for promoting raids on churches and saying those blocking ICE are “just afraid for their bank accounts.”

  9. Brassy Rebel says:

One of Felon47’s orders was that all government workers return to the office. No more WFH! Yesterday was a workday. Just a week following the inauguration. Felon 47 was in Florida golfing. All of these unconstitutional orders are being issued by the Project 2025 Heritage folks who have been deputized to work in the administration.

    • Becks1 says:

My agency is supposedly going to announce this week that they are not going to comply with the collective bargaining agreement in place that solidifies WFH agreements for another four years or something, so that’s going to go to the NLRB (who will side with the union here) and then the DC courts (who will also side with us) and then the Supreme Court. I think its easy to assume the supreme court will side with the administration but I’m honestly not sure. It’s going to be very very messy.

but it is kind of funny bc you can tell Trump/Musk just thought that they could write an order and 5 days later everyone would be back in the office. Um, no. Agencies have downsized significantly, moved away from public transportation hubs (because those buildings are cheaper and with fewer people coming to the office PT isn’t as important), amenities like on site cafeterias have long closed, hiring has continued over the past 5 years but parking has not increased, etc.

They keep issuing these memos that are 100% written by a P2025 henchman but also make it clear they really have no idea what they are doing. We’ve had two canceled meetings already to talk about the return to work order because no one knows what it is happening.

If this wasn’t going to affect my life significantly I’d just be laughing because they really are that incompetent. But then I think that my returning to the office is probably the least evil thing this administration is doing and I don’t feel like laughing anymore.

      • BeanieBean says:

At my specific office there’s not enough room for all of us to be in the office all day, every day, five days a week. And I do mean this literally–as in not enough chairs for all of us to be in there at the same time, not enough network connections for all of us to hook up our computers, not enough dedicated phone lines, etc. We share cubicles & work out amongst our fellow/sister cubie-mates which days of the week we’ll be working so that the others from that cubicle can work from home. We’ve had no official word yet from leadership, not even a ‘we’re working on what it means’ email, but I specifically asked today & was told that the top person is very supportive of our work & does not intend to shaft us. We’ll see.

  10. aquarius64 says:

What gets me is Trump’s DOJ is Nnot going after the employers who hired the illegal immigrants. They violated the law too and you can’t tell me those employers didn’t know their legal status.

    • DaveW says:

Of course not…they are prospective donors. And when are the Trump property raids coming because hard to believe that there isn’t a high percentage of the every groundskeepers, maintenance worker, back of house, housekeeper, crew etc. at Felon47’s properties that are illegal immigrants….

    • Calliope says:

      They’re actually raiding churches?

Lazy, cruel officials all the way down, only targeting nonviolent offenders and those “easiest” to find. May all the employer collaborators get the cruelty and destruction they’ve wished on others.

  11. Togive says:

An who will pick the fruit and vegetables now? It will all gonto waste. Prices will soar. This orange tvrd intends to end immigrants just as much as he intends to end the poor. With food prices rising, people will starve. I am latin. Shame on all my latin people who voted gop. You’d do well to remember your ancestors were once immigrants looking for a better life for their families. Shame on you.

    • QuiteContrary says:

They’re going to use prison labor to pick crops. It’s appalling.

      • Side Eye says:

QuiteContrary you nailed it This is exactly what they are doing, and why the stocks for private prisons started to soar a few days before the election. Modern day slavery.

Get ready for Draconian criminal laws that target certain demographics and the poor, and with harsher penalties – except people will be shipped off to private prisons. The same for the detention centers. They will basically be labor camps.

The Regime wants everyone to take to the streets so they can declare Martial law and suspend the Constitution. Once that happens, all individual rights go out the window – there is no one phone call. They get to lose your paperwork and good luck to your relatives trying to find you. They did this trial run with the child separations during the first term. There’s a method to the incompetence and a reason for it. I won’t say what I think will happen to those people who are too old too sick or unable to work.

The Supreme Court just criminalized homelessness, and the average American is how many paychecks away from being homeless? One? Three? How many people just lost their jobs again? That’s the nearly free labor force.

Also, I’m old enough to remember when he had to be stopped from firing on protesters during the first term…

I’m so sorry for the people who voted against this.

One week. We are one week in.This was week one. I can’t pack fast enough. This is absolutely crazy. We’re seeing democracy collapse in real time.

      • Emily says:

Trump and his admin are disgusting. They see anyone who isn’t a white, rich man as sub-human. They parade around the blonde white women so they can say “see I love women” but they are tokens.

  12. ariel says:

Y’all understand this is the holocaust right?
Mass deportations is how hitler started the holocaust.
There will be camps where any undesirable people are “held”.
And we have little to no free press anymore to report on it.
Social media is rife with censorship.

One day those 7oM+ americans will say that’s not what they voted for, that they didn’t know.
But we are now germany in the 30s.
    It will only get worse.

    • Serena says:

      That’s fascism for you.

    • Robert Phillips says:

The only difference is the Stock Market. When all this hits the fan in a few weeks. And the stock market starts going way down. All the billionaires who paid to put Trump in the office. They will start panicking because they are losing money then. And stuff will change then. All the Trumpist’s greed might be what saves the U.S.

  13. RiaH says:

I scared someone this weekend, and I feel so bad about it. I saw a young dog playing in the road in front of a house with an open gate. I rang the doorbell twice, and I decided to just put the puppy back in the yard and shut the gate. As I walked off, this ten or so year old boy peeped out the door I told him what I was doing so we got her in the yard and locked up.

It wasn’t till I read ICE was in our area knocking doors that I realize I must have terrified the poor kid.

  14. agirlandherdogs says:

Whenever someone says this is about making American safer, we need to push back with statistics about crimes and criminal perpetrators. If this were about making America safer, there would be stricter DV laws. If this were about making America safer, there would be stricter gun laws. If this were about making America safer, legislators would be doing more than sending thoughts and prayers after yet another school shooting carried out by a white male. This is about racism. End of story.

    • SIde Eye says:

Thank you for this agirlandherdogs! Yes. Statistically, immigrants commit LESS crime, not more. Responsible media in a real democracy would be reporting this. But no one cares about facts anymore, cause you’re right this is about Making America White Again. The audacity of people to get whipped up into a frenzy about immigration on stolen land.

    • bisynaptic says:

And sexism. Don’t forget the sexism.

  15. Andy says:

She has the right to express her feelings and opinions, but it’s contradictor y to me tha she feels this way and at the same time is part of a movie in that is a mockery of one of the worst tragedies of our present, directed by a man that speaks so ill about mexicans

    • Friendly Crow says:

I’m not following what you are saying. Could you clarify please?

      • Cee says:

She’s talking about the film Emilia Perez, directed by a Frenchman with no knowledge of Mexico and its people, with a Eurocentric narrative, no Latin* cast and crew, with Selena decimating the Spanish language to the point most of us need subtitles to understand her dialogue.

*actual Latin, born in Latin America with knowledge of the language. No mexicans either

    • Normades says:

Huh? I’m totally ok to forgive some of her career choices (Woody Allen) when as Kaiser says she is absolutely not FAFO and a long time supporter of democrats and democratic causes. I won’t extend that good will to Ronan “all sides are the same” or Snoop “I got me a check”.

  16. Luna says:

So…are there Trump voters out there who are surprised the leopards are eating their faces? Or is it just who voted for Harris who are suffering? I am truly curious about whether the people who voted for him support all the things he’s doing. My guess is they are not getting much of the news.
