Over the weekend, Saturday Night Live had their big 50th anniversary blowout extravaganza. On Friday night, there was a three-hour live special, titled SNL50: The Homecoming Concert and on Sunday night, there was the live SNL50: The Anniversary Special. Both had such fun vibes. There were a lot of favorite SNL hosts, musical guests, and past and present cast members on hand.
The Homecoming Concert in particular really had a very Golden Globes feel to it, if you know what I mean. There were so many funny moments! I think one of my absolute favorite performances from that night was one in which Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer brought back their old sketch where they play everyone’s favorite dorky musical couple, Marty Culp and Bobbi Mohan-Culp. The Culps are married music teachers that perform popular songs in a very pseudo-operatic style. For their reunion sketch, they did a medley of songs including Sam Smith/Kim Petras’ “Unholy,” Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck Babe,” and the pièce de résistance, Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.” If you’ve ever wanted to hear Will and Ana dramatically sing “A Minoooooor,” in front of a room full of people, including Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, and Steven Spielberg, then I’ve got some great news for you…
The Culps are back to catch us up on the past 20 years in music (and more recent music feuds) during SNL50: The Homecoming Concert. During Friday’s SNL50: The Homecoming Concert, alums Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer reprised the hilarious music-teaching couple they portrayed on the NBC sketch comedy show from 1996 to 2002, complete with a cover of Kendrick Lamar‘s ‘Not Like Us’.
In addition to Britney Spears’ ‘Work Bitch’, Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ ‘Unholy’, Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘Body’ and Chappell Roan’s ‘Good Luck Babe’, the duo gave their rendition of Lamar’s diss track against Drake.
“Are Kenny Lamar and Drake Graham in the house, by the way? Maybe you two can hug it out tonight in the name of love and fellowship,” Ferrell’s Marty Culp joked. “No? Not in hell?”
Following the track’s five Grammy wins amid his feud with Drake, Lamar performed the song during his Super Bowl LIX halftime show, featuring Drake’s ex Serena Williams.
Hosted by alum Jimmy Fallon, the SNL50 lineup also features Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, The B52s, Jelly Roll, Brandi Carlile, Eddie Vedder, Mumford & Sons, Lady Gaga, Post Malone, Arcade Fire, Chris Martin, Backstreet Boys, Bonnie Raitt, David Byrne, Brittany Howard, Devo, The Roots, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Robyn, Jack White, Cher, Dave Grohl, Lauryn Hill, Snoop Dogg, St. Vincent and Wyclef Jean.
This was so freaking funny. Even though I knew they were doing popular songs, when Will whispered, “I see dead people” before Ana busted out into vocalizing the Not Like Us beat, my thought was, “Why are they bringing The Sixth Sense into this?” LOL. I just did not expect them to go there, but it was great. I cannot believe that they sang every lyric in that verse. I thought for sure they would censor out FDFile or do something funny with the “why you trolling” line but NOPE. They really got up there and did the whole damn thing. And, just like during the Grammys, the audience was into it. The bit when they asked “Kenny” Lamar and Drake Graham if they wanted to hug it out was also hilarious and completely in character. Kudos for the commitment and execution.
There were also some other really great musical moments during the concert. Miley, looking like the spitting image of her mother, performed “Flowers” early on, Post Malone joined the remaining members of Nirvana for a good rendition of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Cher kicked ass with “Turn Back Time,” and the B-52s blew the roof off with a rousing singalong of “Love Shack.” But, IMO, after Will & Ana, the big highlight of the evening was an amazing medley of Andy Samberg and Lonely Island songs featuring Lady Gaga, Chris Parnell, Eddie Veddor, Bad Bunny, and T-Pain. Watching Gaga singing “D*ck in a Box” and “Motherlover” was a delightful surprise.

Them singing “a minor” over and over again killed me. I also loved the Domingo skit 😆
The Culps sketches in the 90s were my all time favorite. I used to cry, I’d laugh so hard at them. The cast that Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer belonged to on SNL was a strong one.
WF and AG performing NLU in their signature style was a glorious thing to witness.
I haven’t yet watched every clip that is out there — time zones and other things got in the way, but I noticed that Jelly Roll took part in both SNL50 and the Invictus Games closing ceremony. What a busy weekend.
From the short clip that I saw, it was hilarious and I enjoyed watching it. I wish I can see the full show but I’m in the UK.
My absolute favorite duo!
Drake Graham is never coming back to the US
