Sade is back and she’s allegedly 51, but the woman doesn’t look much different than she did in the 80s. Sade is the singer in the British group Sade, known for their 1985 hit Smooth Operator. She’s got a new album out that she’s promoting called Soldier of Love and she sounds and looks just as good as she did over 25 years ago. If she had plastic surgery I want the number of her doctor because she looks incredible. I saw her on The View this morning and was blown away. Sure she’s still rocking the big earrings and the slicked back hair, but somehow the look still works for her and doesn’t make her look dated at all. Here’s more on Sade’s comeback after a ten year hiatus:
The singer Sade is as well known for what she doesn’t do as what she does.
She doesn’t ordinarily sit down for extensive interviews. She almost never pops up on the red carpet or in the lenses of the paparazzi. And for someone known for her music, she hasn’t released all that much of it.
Her new album, “Soldier of Love” — which came out Tuesday — marks only her sixth studio album in 25 years, and her first since the very successful “Lovers Rock,” which came out in 2000.
Message boards and fans have been buzzing for months about her return.
“She has had an unusual career path, but I think for her it’s worked because she sits outside of trends,” said David Prince, news editor for Billboard.com. “She keeps it rare and special.”
Technically, Sade is a band — the singer and musicians Stuart Matthewman, Paul Spencer Denman and Andrew Hale along with drummer Pete Lewinson who has joined them on tour.
But ordinarily when people refer to Sade, they are talking about the smoky-voiced Helen Folasade Adu, daughter of a Nigerian father and an English mother.
Her first album, “Diamond Life,” contained the hit singles “Smooth Operator,” “Your Love Is King” and “Hang On To Your Love.” It went multiplatinum and established her around the world.
Her deep, sultry voice quickly became a staple of U.S. radio stations featuring the “quiet storm” style of music, heavy on mood and romance.
Her performances over the years were lush in their understatement — Sade resplendent, hair pulled back, jamming with her band. No guest rappers, no samples and no frenetic backup dancers. Just the music.
According to Billboard, all of her albums — including a live album and a greatest hits album — have made the Top 10, with “Lovers Rock” selling 3.9 million copies. She’s also had eight Top 10 R&B singles in a row, including the latest, “Soldier of Love.”
[From CNN]
Sade said on The Today Show that her 13 year-old daughter is singing with her on her new CD. It sounds like she took time off to raise her daughter, and now she’s back better than ever. “Soldier of Love” was released in the US yesterday and is currently the number one album on the iTunes download charts.
Here’s Sade on Letterman yesterday performing Soldier of Love.
And on The Today Show. The audio on her voice is too low but you can tell that she still has those beautiful pipes:
And here’s the official video for Solider of Love.
Why did she ever go away anyway? she has a timeless talent as well as beauty…
It has been waaayy to long. Welcome back Sade!! Just in time for Valentine’s day. 😉
Her secret is that she is a goddess, and goddesses don’t age.
love her music, so refreshing to hear music of substance…check out her newest song called Skin…love this woman
Her voice does naughty things to my ladybits.
She still sounds and looks incredible. She is like a bright light in this fog of mediocrity and general lack of talent that is the music industry today.
Sade’s always been a class act and it’s great to have her back!
She looks fabulous, for any age. Love her voice. Glad she’s back from wherever she went (lost in a sea of bad music probably). She sounds great!
That’s what real talent is. Pay attention wannabes.
@Jess:
Exactly.!
Well she’s black, and blacks (that take care of themselves well) don’t crack!!
Well her mother is a white BRIT father is nigerian
@Kim. I know, but she is still a black woman with a white mother. And blacks (that takes care of themselves) don’t crack. My mother is 54, but most ppl think she’s still in her late 30’s.
I just brought her CD from Borders. Welcome Sade
truthSF — You are so right. I am not black but the women I know who are have the most beautiful skin and it gives them a timeless beauty. Any time I try to guess their age I’m usually ten years under…at least.
Yep. Black don’t crack.
(hummming) your love is the sweetest taboo
or she’s a vampire. JK.. I love her.. but really, maybe she’s a vampire?
She looks like a typical Nigerian lady. Classy and ageless…LOL
She looks great and is a talented singer, that’s why she is still around and people want to hear her songs, unlike others who disappear with time.
Sade and her music are a perfect embodiment of a very rare combination: elegant, intelligent sexiness. And it hasn’t diminished with time or age. Jess is right – she is a goddess.
Tsk… black DOES crack, it just does so at a later age. And then all the years catch up. A 75 yr. old person looks 75, whether they’re black, white, asian, etc. It’s at 50 that the melanin-caused difference in skin aging is remarkable.
*sigh* I love her.
I am so glad she is back, the purity of her voice and talent, along with her absolute physical beauty, are a welcome relief from all the garbage that is in the music industry today.
I agree with Jess, a goddess is she. 🙂
I never get tired of listening to Love Deluxe. It’s timeless perfection, just like the artist herself.
I love Sade, had the pleasure of seeing her in concert several times, the whole band is incredible live.
Re the long time between albums and appearances it was rumoured that she suffers/suffered from depression and decided that living in the limelight was bad for her general wellbeing. Looks like she made the right call. So nice to see her back a class act all around.
Sade’s band helps her make THAT SOUND. But, she is like Sting. You always know that sound, no matter how many years go by. Sade, yes, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
@Moops
You don’t know what you’re talking about. Given the same skin care regimen, people of color will look younger at any age. Look at Tina Turner and Susan Sarandon.
She obviously received “the best” genes from both sides of her family. Her look is “timeless” because she’s a very secure individual who’s not trying to “over sell” her image to the public.
I really admire how both she and Denzel Washington handle their celebrity status. Entertaining the public is their “livelihood” not their lives and they do what’s necessary to keep their lives private so they can enjoy their families in peace. They may not be the wealthiest celebrities; however, they are very well admired and respected. I just love Sade’s music and it’s always wonderful when these musicians get together and perform. Their new albums is very classy and I’m sure it will do quite well. I wish all of them continued success. I can’t wait for them to tour the States!
Nah, Lisa, everyone looks old eventually. Susan vs. Tina is a bad example, since both ladies have been pulled and tucked. Lainey herself talks about the phenomena in Asian women – calls it the Blessing (looking young for a long time) and the Curse (when years of aging catch up with you, sometime around 60). If looking 20 years younger than your real age could be maintained forever, we’d seldom see any ancient-looking people of color.
My all time favourite artist. The Queen Sade…
Welcome back Lady. I have been missing you.
Welcome back Sade, a first class act! We missed ya!
Wow, I love all her freckles!
It’s a Nigerian thing! My kids are half Yoruba like she is, and I am getting tired of dragging my wrinkly middle-aged white self around radiant middle-aged African in-laws. We of pale complexions age worst of anyone.
Methinks a little judicious tweak has occurred. But she doesnt look freakish or desperate, which is always good. She sticks to her shit, does what she does best, doesn’t seem to care if noone likes it. That’s more punk than anything.
I can’t wait till she goes on tour! I will be getting tickets when she comes this way! She is still beautiful.
WOW. That’s all I can say. As for “black don’t crack”…lucky bitches 🙂
It’s “slather on the sun screen” for us pale ladies…
welcome back sade! and btw TruthSF she’s not black she’s mixed race. white AND black we Brits dont apply the one drop rule like in america, so she’s mixed race.
Yeah – that’s how it is for us browns. We hold it up over time. You do see “older” looking black women, but if we take care of ourselves at all, our looks will last. She looks 51, to me. Other folks just look busted…
Oh YAY! I danced my first “husband and wife” dance to “By Your Side”. She is amazing!
Thanks so much for posting this about Sade…been listening to her new album all day, about five times already! And she’s just so classic…and even in the trendy times of the 80s her music doesn’t age…just as her queenlyness and grace..the songs Skin and The Safest Place are amazing, moving and deep.
her voice gives me goosebumps. yay new cd!
Love her!
Fantastic song, she looks great.
Her eyes are quite swollen but she definitely looks much younger than she is. Amazing.
When I was a kid and my sister listened to her music I was fascinated by her voice and her beauty, although her forehead scared and still scares me.
In the main picture she looks like Nefertiti.
She has a good voice, but I don’t like her music.
She doesn’t look like she has had plastic surgery to me either. Most people do not succeed in looking the same, they usually look tweaked. She hasn’t changed her style so she probably wouldn’t change her face. Her face isn’t very symmetrical at all. She looks great.
Some more racist bithces in this post.
Wait,isn’t Susan Sarandon 63???!!!
That’s not a good comparison is Sade is 51,is it?
Geesh,people.
Love her.
dont know her. I’ve heard the song Smooth Operator – however, it’s not really my type of music.
She’s gorgeous though – must say
my mom is like that…
love her…simply timeless.
Sade’s back – YAY! And another 80’s songstress that I’d like to hear and see again – Anita Baker! (Come on back girl – we miss you!)
Yes it true black does not crack and blacks have amazing skin, my mum is 60 and her skin is wonderful not a single wrinkle… but the thing is we don’t take care of our bodies, we become obese and this is the norm for us, what’s the use of great skin if you are fat….
lol @ the truth, i think that’s the norm for anyone if you don’t take care yourself….and it’s common sense people, folks with more melanin age better (if they take care of themselves), it’s science
She´s okay had her first album eons ago. I was always mesmerized by the size of her mouth, it looked huge.
It’s a scientific fact that melanin does give your skin some protection against sun damage and the more melanin the more protection, thus the old saying that “good black don’t crack”. But while we have a serious obesity problem in the black community, obesity is not the norm. I’m black and I’ve always been slim, thanks to a great metabolism and a smallish appetite.
Still one of THE best concerts I’ve ever seen!
I’ve never seen grown men act like teenage girls at a Joanas Bros. concert!
She could put out an album every 20 years and I would still buy it without having heard a single song.
love love love sade.
I have been in Love with Sade’s music since i was 6 she is a timeless beauty as well as an artist when i first found out she was putting out a new CD i was so excited too bad im deployed in afghanistan or id have it ima get it as soon as i get home my favorite song of all time is “Bullet Proof Soul” so amazing I JUST LOVE HER
What’s Sades secret?
Lot’s of money poured into publicity and advertising by her record company. Lot’s of money to supply millions of CD’s to all the major department stores.
Lot’s of money to spend endless hours in the studio getting it perfect.
Sade never had surgery obviously u would be able to tell nor any botox she’s just aging beautifully she dosent look as young as she use to but she looks good for her age but definitely can tell she has age but hey she’s 53 what u expect lol …..any way the woman don’t look like your typical Nigerian woman she looks middle eastern, Egyptian, arabian, indian, latin, puerto. rican,Brazilian, labanese,European, east. african mixed she has a very diverse look always been gorgeous and exotic love her features and picture perfect profile face and glad she’s back on the scene
