The Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise may have lost Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, but star Johnny Depp is allegedly hanging in there despite the departure of his friend and ally, Disney studio chief Dick Cook. Pirates IV may get another A-lister on board alongside Depp. Penelope Cruz is said to be in talks to star:
Penelope Cruz is in negotiations to join Johnny Depp and sail the seven seas in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” the fourth installment of the movie series being directed by Rob Marshall.
Depp is reprising his popular role of Captain Jack Sparrow, and while plot details are buried deeper than Blackbeard’s treasure, it is known the tale revolves around the Fountain of Youth.
Cruz’s character details are also being kept secret, though she is to be Sparrow’s foil and equal in many ways.
Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot wrote the script. Jerry Bruckheimer is producing.
For Cruz, the role reunites her with Marshall, who directed her in “Nine.” Her performance garnered her an Oscar nomination in the best supporting actress category just last week. She won the Oscar for best actress in a supporting role for 2008’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”
“Pirates” will set sail before cameras in Hawaii this summer. Disney plans for a May 20, 2011, release.

You know, I put more faith in Johnny than he probably deserves but I still tend to think something like Pirates IV is beneath Cruz. Maybe she’s doing it for the paycheck, though. She’s been in a lot of smaller films lately (excepting Nine, which kind of bombed relative to expectations) and a blockbuster couldn’t hurt.
ShowbizSpy has some kind of touching quotes from Penelope on what fame means to her in light of working class upbringing outside of Madrid. Penelope originally gave these quotes to Charlie Rose on 60 Minutes. “I still can’t believe that I won the Oscar last year because of the way I grew up. Just to dream about becoming an actress and making a living out of that sounded like science fiction in my environment.”
Cruz also talked about the discipline she learned from studying classical ballet for 10 years and how that made her determined and persistent. She said that she was inspired to become an actress at the age of 14 after seeing Pedro Almodovar’s Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down. “I’ve never felt so inspired and (I knew) this is what I want to do. And that week, I looked for an agent. And I did an audition, and she sent me home and she said, ‘You are too young. Come back next year.’ But I came back the week after. And she sent me away again. And then I came back the week after.” Almodovar and Cruz have since made four films together. I love hearing success stories like that.
please, no, no, no, nooooooooooooo!!!!!!
oh good finally she will have a hit movie
With all due respect to Penelope Cruz, at the risk of seeming flat out avaricious Disney may want to avoid another ‘Pirates’ movie, especially ‘Pirates meet the Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ She’s better than this. I would have thought the same of Depp but I guess it takes a lot to afford the upkeep of your own island.
Way to save the franchise! Go Pene!
Love Johnny Depp, love him as this character, and Keira and Orlando have played out their parts. Penelope would be great in a movie like this, and she and Johnny were awesome in “Blow.”
Ugh. I love the Pirates movies, but if she is in it, I may well not go see it. She is a horrible, untalented actress. She will ruin it.
Johnny is interesting as (in my experience) men who are movie-buffs tend to admire him as women do, and that is extremely rare for a pretty actor.
When it comes to Penelope, I do think she’s a good actress, but she does deliver her best work for Almodovar. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, she was mesmerising in “Volver” and in my mind deserved the Oscar every bit as much as Helen Mirren that year.
Penelope is a good actress imo. but please not another POTC
Pirates is beneath Penelope?? HAHAHAHA….
yeah because doing sh*t movies like Nine is a much better idea.
They were already in a movie together: “Blow” from 2001.
I just wish she worked on her accent so it was less thick and distracting. (It makes her acting in American movies seem comic, when she’s wonderful in Almodovar’s movies.)
I like this combination, the movie without a doubt will be a success! Johnny and Penelope are great actors.
Penelope was a voice in G Force, so she hasn’t defintely done something far, far beneath the level of POTC.
That said, I recently read a very interesting article that she and Almodovar are hated in her native Spain, and that they find her to be a terrible actress who is too commercial. While over here she is viewed as an indie darling.
IMHO she is a very good actress, and I see no reason to hate on her because she is so famous, but sometimes that’s the way the cookie crumbles.
cant stand JD, i dont think he’s attractive, and never got why women were so in love with him!?!?
ohohoh, i love this idea! jack sparrow is no end of fun and he’d do great with a sharp female sparring partner. i think penny could totally pull that off.
I love JD and Jack Sparrow is one of the best movie characters in a long time, but those films seem to get progressively worse. I loved the 1st, but imagine the 4th will be terrible.
As for Penelope, I think she’s a decent actress and have enjoyed some of her work, but there’s something about her that bugs me. I think it’s her voice/accent, which isn’t really fair, but can’t help it if it bugs me.
I hope this movie will be good. The last two sucked arse. Glad Bloom and Knightley are gone, that storyline was played out.
I love her. I love Almodovar. I love the films they make.
I love her hair. It always has so much volume. I liked her in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. I liked the first 2 POTC but the storyline is starting to run out.
Yaaayyyy, now I don’t have to see Keira Knightly speaking from the side of her mouth.
OMG! NO! I PREFER KEIRA KNIGHTLEY AS ELIZABETH 200 TIMES!!!!!! ….WTF! WHAT THEY DID WITH THE SPARRABETH STORY!….in the book “on stangers tides” …jack stays with Elizabeth , that will be a better script…for this movie…common!
penelope will ruin the trilogy!
Pirates ended up also referred to as corsairs who operated in the Mediterranean Sea between the 15th and 18th centuries, and the buccaneers who lived in the Caribbean for the duration of the 17th Century.
