Why are the Dallas Mavericks smearing Luka Doncic after they traded him?

On February 1st, Luka Doncic was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the LA Lakers. Doncic, a 25-year-old from Slovenia, is generally considered to be one of the greatest basketball players of his generation, and he backed up that hype during his years in Dallas. Mavericks fans LOVED Doncic and they were heartbroken when Mavs’ management traded Luka to the Lakers. This controversy has been playing out for the past month, the “why did the Mavs do this trade” and “what the hell were they thinking” and “poor Luka, he thought he was going to be in Dallas forever.” Luka is in the process of bouncing back from the trade though, and he seems to like his new environment in LA, and LeBron James has seemed a decade younger since Luka joined the team.

One of the weirdest parts of this story is that the Mavericks’ camp have launched a full-blown smear campaign against Luka as a way to justify the boneheaded trade of their biggest star. For weeks now, there has been a very loud “whisper campaign” coming from Dallas that Luka got traded because they were concerned about his conditioning, his weight and his off-court activities. This week, the New York Times reported this after the Lakers beat the Mavericks this week, Luka’s first time playing against his old team:

Nico Harrison heard the chants. Of course, he heard the chants. The Dallas Mavericks general manager, whose choice to trade Luka Dončić might go down as one of the biggest blunders in the history of the NBA, and who sat there in that dapper blue suit for all the Crypto.com Arena fans to see in the reunion game on Tuesday night, couldn’t avoid the sarcastic gratitude that was heaped upon him. “Thank you … Nico!” the Luka Nation bellowed several times during the Los Angeles Lakers’ 107-99 win.

Give Harrison credit for this much: The 52-year-old former Nike executive is, as you surely have heard by now, a man of great conviction. Once his vision is crystallized — no matter how uncomfortable it might be — he sees nothing else but the decisions that must be made to bring it to life. And in the case of Dončić, whose poor habits both on and off the court were at the crux of this controversial call, that meant parting ways with a player who most believe is on track to become one of the all-time greats for an older, injury-riddled big man in Anthony Davis, who was the centerpiece of their return.

Make no mistake, the people who witnessed Dončić’s last days in Dallas do not paint a flattering portrait of the 25-year-old’s professionalism. They call him lazy. They talk about the weight issues that were such a frequent frustration within their walls. They mention the social habits that The Athletic has reported on — such as a taste for beer and hookah — which have been a point of concern for NBA types since he was a 19-year-old star for Real Madrid who was entering the draft. They predict his basketball demise, highlighting a health history that, as some see it, will likely lead to catastrophe in the next five years or so.

[From The NY Times]

This is what I don’t get: why fat-shame or conditioning-shame Doncic if you’re the Dallas Mavericks? I can understand wanting to justify an especially bad trade, but these Dallas sources are the ones who look completely unprofessional in this situation, insulting a guy who took them to the finals and smearing him after they threw him out like he was three-day-old garbage. If you genuinely believe that Doncic’s conditioning is that big of a problem, why not sit back and smirk and say “the Lakers will see soon enough?” Instead, Doncic has been kicking ass in LA and from the looks of it, he’s dropped like twenty pounds in the past month.

This was a scraping of the bottom of the barrel to attempt to justify a shocking trade of an extremely popular and talented player. Mavs fans are pissed and the owner had to come up with an excuse, no matter how illogical.

He paid for the fans’ parking at one of his first games with the Lakers, so he is already winning hearts in LA!

I’m in Dallas, and they’ve thrown people out of places for booing the exec when he shows in public. He got booed at an smu basketball game and they threw a fan out for booing him at the mavs games. Workers at the arena have been removing shrines as they go up. It’s a total cluster.

I don’t know why they’re so committed to doubling down on this shit, other than it distracts from the talk that the new owner is throwing a fit that she can’t build a sports casino plex here like she thought she’d be able to just waltz in and do. She might be doing this so everyone’s pissed enough she can move the franchise to Vegas, where she already owns casino/hotels.

Texan and Dallas native here. It’s fair to say that Texas makes A LOT of stupid decisions and every now and then, those decisions happen to be sports related. Mavericks fans still can’t wrap their mind around this move. Even casual sports fans who may not even pay that much attention to basketball are like WTF. Nobody understands this at all and I’m pretty sure that nobody is buying those lame ass excuses for getting rid of our best player. I don’t think this would have happened on Cuban’s watch.

This is the American athlete version of the buyers remorse the UK tabloids have had since they ran the superstar Sussexes out of the country to embiggen the left behind duds. Fafo. Dude can’t be in that bad a shape if he already has those stats as a 25 year old. Running back and forth during a game of basketball is no joke. Remember Major League? The owners are crashing the team intentionally and can’t stand being called out on their bull 💩. Go Luka and LeBron!

Lol at this comparison. I don’t follow basketball but wow these people seem like real assholes. Wish Luka the best and nothing but shame for the shit talkers.

As a Trae Young fan, I’m sitting back and laughing. For years the Hawks/Atlanta were told Dallas got the better player in the trade, even though, Dallas & Atlanta have moved in similar ways with Atlanta reaching the Eastern Conference finals before Dallas made the Western CF. Until the Mavs gave Luka competent players to support him, they weren’t going anywhere with just him. Same with Trae.

It is baffling why he was traded, probably has to do with money, but let’s be real here, he did look slow and out of shape in the weeks preceding the trade. Outsiders were commenting on it. And if he was vaping/hooka-ing more, I could see the red flags being waved. In the end, this will blow over.

Luka will probably go on to win a championship with the Lakers. The Mavs may put together a team that will win in the future. Who knows. But right now, it’s funny watching the self-righteousness of NBA fans/podcasts/Twitter when players willing leave teams to create super teams to win championships. The rich just got richer.

I will never understand this trade.

  7. NBA employee says:

It’s not shocking that he was traded. It’s shocking what the trade pieces were. The Mavs should have gotten MUCH more (even though AD was having a stellar season before his injury). Yes, Luka is generational. But that’s not enough to get it done. The commitment that it takes to excel in the NBA is unreal, and the Mavs rightfully didn’t believe he was willing to commit to it.

There is real chatter behind the scenes that Adelson wants to tank the team and lose local allegiance so that she can move to Vegas. She was shocked when they turned down her casino. Adam Silver doesn’t like to look stupid though, so it’ll be very interesting how that all plays out….

    • TheOriginalMia says:

Ah…that makes more sense than anything I’ve heard. Vegas will get a team sooner than later.

I forgot one of the players traded didn’t pass his physical.

  8. LightPurple says:

    And they kept Kyrie.

    Deliberate tanking
