Michelle Obama: Barack wanted a third child, ‘and I was like ‘Dude.”

First it was the Duchess of Sussex’s Archetypes and now it’s Kylie Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie podcast – both women dethroned Spotify’s “golden boy” douchebag Joe Rogan from the top of the pod charts. Kylie’s podcasting success is no surprise – she’s a very normal person married to one of the most beloved retired football players in the country. She’s got the relatable-mom-married-to-a-sports-bro act down pat. Her family is basically a sitcom already. All of which to say, it does not surprise me at all that Kylie is booking some big-name guests. In this week’s NGL pod, Kylie spoke to Michelle Obama. They seemed to bond about so much – having daughters, being early-to-bed people and more. Michelle also revealed that her husband wanted a third child, and whether she would ever run for president.

Michelle Obama is content with being a mother of two. The former first lady, who shares daughters Malia Obama, 26, and Sasha Obama, 23, with her husband, former president Barack Obama, got candid with Kylie Kelce about her and Barack’s differing opinions on the size of their family on the March 20 episode of Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie podcast.

“I was like, I think I’ve been lucky with these two,” Michelle said of Malia and Sasha. “Barack was like, ‘We should have a third,’ and I was like, ‘Dude.’ ” Kylie, 32, who is currently pregnant with her fourth child with husband Jason Kelce, noted of Michelle’s girls, “Two good sleepers, I’d call it too.” The Becoming author agreed, adding, “You know, I’m thinking we’re gonna get a crazy one.”

Getting candid about her fears from early motherhood, Michelle said, “I think the sadness or the postpartum that I felt with my kids really came from, like, you love these babies so much. You immediately, you’re connected, and you think, ‘Oh my god, all you have is me. I feel so bad for you. I wish you had a parent.’ ”

Michelle and Kylie, who are both mothers to girls, also quipped about their husbands being girl dads. “That’s because that’s what your husband deserved,” Michelle told Kylie. “That’s what I told Barack, ‘Dude, you need a bunch of women in your life to smack you around.’”

And while she’s been approached about running for president countless times, Michelle added that she’d never consider it, due mostly to her role as a mother.

“I wanted them to have the freedom of not having the eyes of the world on them,” she explained. “And so when people ask me would I ever run, the answer is no. If you ask me that, then you have absolutely no idea the sacrifice that your kids make when your parents are in that role.”

Noting that she’s “not interested in politics in that way,” the author added, “The thought of, like, putting my girls back into that spotlight when they are just now establishing themselves. I think we’ve done enough … they’ve already served their time.”

It’s still crazy to me that Democrats still eagerly pitch MO as their dream candidate when she’s spent years and years saying the same thing, which is that she has absolutely no interest in politics. That’s especially true at this point, after she saw what happened in the last election. As for Barack wanting another kid and MO shutting it down… she’s spoken and written about how tough those early years were when their girls were young, and how she felt like Barack wasn’t pulling his weight as a father. I imagine that, more than anything, was the biggest factor in not wanting a third.

In this clip, MO and Kylie talk about how they love to go to bed early. It truly is one of the best gifts you can give yourself at a certain age – a quiet early bedtime.

I really miss having a regular family in the White House…

I’m looking forward to listening to this particular conversation. I love that Lady O is doing this podcast with her brother Craig.

  3. Dee(2) says:

They only keep mentioning her because she keeps saying that she doesn’t want to do it. The second that she showed any real interest in fundraising, doing caucuses or primaries, and forming an exploratory committee they would turn on her in 5 seconds. They literally did the same thing to Kamala Harris who they just loved when she was grilling Kavanaugh, and then became the devil incarnate in the fall of 2019 when she announced her bid for presidency. And they are doing the exact same thing to Jasmine Crockett right now.

    • MrsBanjo says:

This exactly. The folks pushing this are just using her as a prop.

    • Brassy Rebel says:

The folks who elevate Black women before turning on them are white leftists, mostly dudes.

      • Dee(2) says:

Not just dudes. There’s a whole bunch of it right now and towards Kamala, asking why she isn’t showing allyship and why isn’t she out in front organizing protest and things like that. It’s definitely a high interest point for a certain type, but we do need to acknowledge that is not just The Young Turks/PodBros listeners that are the problem.

      • Brassy Rebel says:

Wanting her to lead a protest is itself very revealing. Just say you want her to get shot! I truly hate these people almost as much as MAGAs. Of course, some are bots.

Kamala knows what she is doing in maintaining a low profile. All the people who f’ed around are now finding out. She does not want to get in the way of that. Trump and Musk would love for her to be more visible so they could distract their cult with her.

  4. Brassy Rebel says:

Michelle Obama would be the Democrats’ “dream candidate” until the moment she announced she was running for president. Then her life would become a totally terrible hellscape. The right wing propaganda attacks would be swift and brutal to the point that her great polling numbers would fall like a rock. She’s smart. She knows this. And she’s not falling for the okey doke. I mean, Republicans attacked her relentlessly while she was FLOTUS for (checks notes) wanting school kids to eat healthy. Now, we have an anti-vaxxer as HHS secretary. Leave her the f**k alone!

Going to bed early—the gift I gave myself when I turned 40. I don’t know how I survived before.

I don’t enjoy podcasts as much as a lot of people.

Not Gonna Lie- is the only podcast i listen to every week. I love it.
I am not a mom, nor will i ever be one- but she is funny and smart and does not take her self too seriously. Her conversations are always engaging.

Also, she caps her podcasts at 45 minutes. And i love that.
I don’t want to spend more than that on a podcast really.

Also, hosting Mrs. Obama is a HUGE deal.
Mrs. Kelce generally starts her interview saying- this is someone i have no business talking to….

I bet she REALLY felt that this week.

    • Murphy says:

Everyone who loves NGL mentions how much they love the 45 minute cap, its interesting how such a simple act could garner so much praise (and thus attention), I agree too-I love the cap. I can actually listen to the whole thing in one go

      • amb says:

Depends – 45 minutes is way too short for a good pod, and way too long for a bad one. Personally my minimum is an hour, but I’m ruthless about axing the natterers.

  7. Amy G says:

I would love to see Meghan Sussex on this podcast. I think it would be an interesting conversation.
And I agree that the moment Michelle Obama announced, there would be so much fanfare and excitement and then 3 months later she’d be attacked for existing and blamed for everything under the sun.

  8. L4Frimaire says:

Never listened to this podcast but will check it out. Haven’t really heard much about Michelle’s new podcast. I think a lot of people are right about Michelle bring the dream candidate but if it actually became a reality they would attack and tear her down. What the Democrats need are the current elected leadership to rise to this occasion and stop looking so passive around Trump and what the GOP are doing.

  9. Square2 says:

Some men, *sign*, it’s not you have to carry another life for many months and risk your life carrying it & give birth. Take a seat.

Didn’t Michelle say she went through a lot to get pregnant? That process must be traumatized to Michelle.

(Some) men like to think women are weaker than them, but let them experience menstruation pain & childbirth pain, they would cry like a baby.

  10. QuiteContrary says:

Michelle and Kylie are both such gems. This is a combo I needed.
