Unnamed sources are convinced that Justin Bieber is ‘facing demons’ these days

I swear, I’m not even a Justin Bieber fan, but the way people treat him these days has turned me into some kind of late-in-life Bieber-defender. From where I sit, Justin was a really screwed up kid who did a lot of drugs, made a lot of mistakes and had a lot of toxic sexual/romantic relationships. In the past five years, he got clean-ish (he still smokes weed), he married Hailey Baldwin and he became a father. He’s also largely put his music career on the back-burner. He sold his catalogue for $200 million, he fired Scooter Braun and much of his management team, and he has shown zero interest in ever touring again. He’s had health problems and mental health problems, and he goes to therapy and he goes to church. Like… this is kind of a success story for a child star, you know? He’s doing what he wants, he spends tons of time with his wife and child and his priorities have changed away from the grind. But people keep trying to say that Justin is at a breaking point or that his behavior is especially wild these days. He’s just posting weird sh-t on Instagram!! The latest is this Hollywood Reporter story about Bieber’s “crisis of faith.” Some highlights:

He split from his team last year: Professionally, he separated from his longtime team last summer, joining a number of uber-successful musicians who self-manage, like Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars and Morgan Wallen. In taking the lead on his business affairs, the singer has enlisted a tight-knit crew of compatriots who share his resolve to chart a new direction. Many in his inner circle also share his faith, ascribing to the beliefs of Churchome, a nondenominational Christian community with an outpost in Beverly Hills that is run by 44-year-old pastor Judah Smith, who also serves as a spiritual adviser to Bieber.

He unfollowed a lot of people on IG: Concern for Bieber’s well-being turned into a full-on public discourse when, in January, he unfollowed a number of his former friends and associates — including Braun and deputy Allison Kaye (who, after running point on all things Bieber for the better part of two decades, resigned in January), Good (who was the best man at his wedding) and longtime security chief Kenny Hamilton (who shielded him from music industry vultures, bad actors and others, like accused sex trafficker Diddy, according to multiple people present at the time), among others.

THR relies heavily on “former team members”: “Seeing him disintegrate like this … it’s watching the embodiment of someone not living their purpose,” says one ex team member. “He’s lost. There’s no one protecting him because there’s no one there willing to say no to him. You say no, you get blown out.”

An insider says Bieber is just arty: “Artists are artists — they don’t look at the world the way you and I do,” says the insider, who laughs off the notion that Bieber is in distress. “He’s healthier than all of us — physically and mentally.”

Bieber on his own: “He’s managing himself through his own family office now, and there’s skepticism on if he can do it alone,” says Chris Anokute, a veteran music executive who’s worked extensively with Katy Perry. “He’s leaving home for the first time. He’s building a business without the team that took him here. I’m sure he’s feeling that pressure. But he can [do it]. At the end of the day, Justin Bieber is a star, and consumers still want Justin Bieber. … He’s showing a lot of courage and foresight on what the industry is going to look like in the future.”

How is he doing financially? While one might think that Bieber, who sat at the top of the pop heap for the better part of the 2010s, would be flush with cash, multiple insiders, who until recently were familiar with his finances, suggest he’s overstretched — real estate purchases and renovations (he owns six homes, including a $26 million estate in Beverly Hills’ exclusive Beverly Park neighborhood, a $16 million home in La Quinta, and a property in the tony Gozzer Ranch Golf and Lake Club in Idaho, where the Kardashian-Jenners are known to holiday) and destination vacations with friends are particularly taxing — even on the heels of a $200 million deal for the publishing rights to his catalog, executed in January 2023. (Bieber’s reps vigorously deny the assertion, telling THR, “Any source that is trying to sell you a story about alleged financial distress … either doesn’t understand the entertainment industry or, more likely, is trying to paint an unflattering portrait of Justin, which bears no resemblance to reality.”)

[From THR]

Here’s the thing – the conversations about “can he manage himself with an in-house team” presupposes that Bieber wants to make a musical comeback or have the same kind of career he had a decade ago. And I don’t think that’s what he wants at all? He’s obviously working on music and he’ll eventually release it, but stop thinking that he’s interested in going head-to-head with Taylor Swift or whatever? Because that’s just not what interests him at this point (imo).

Additionally, similar “unnamed sources” went to People Magazine to say that Justin is “facing a lot of different demons right now. He is making some really poor decisions lately, further impacting friendships, money, and business…People are worried about him.” Bieber seems especially upset with the broke-ass accusations, because his rep went to People Mag and said: “This is just clickbait stupidity based on unnamed — and clearly ill-informed — ‘sources,’ disappointed that they no longer work with Justin. As Justin forges his own way forward, these unnecessary stories and inaccurate assumptions will continue. But, they won’t deter him from staying committed to following the right path.”

It seems like people want him to be unhappy, more than it is him being unhappy. Just like it disturbs me how much people seem to want him to have been abused as a child. It doesn’t come across as them wanting justice, but them wanted salaciousness. It’s really gross.

He was a kid who got ridiculously famous super young, made some really poor decisions, and lived his life out in public which of course exacerbated a lot of it, and has now pulled back. People need to just let him live. He’s not interested obviously in being the Justin Bieber of 2014. Let him live.

Seriously, this reads so similarly to what they have done to Harry for his entire life. This could be an article about Harry’s old friends crying about how they have been cut out. Could Justin just be, I don’t know, growing up?

      • Megan says:

I think the Diddy arrest has shaken him. I would not be the least surprised to see his name on the list of victims.

    • Mtg_ie says:

Agreed. Press is so focused on negatives. Negative sells.. He is responding normally to a variety of abnormal negative situations around him. I’m not anyway a Bieber fan, but I hope he keeps with the wife and kid and uses them to base him emotionally

  2. molly says:

I mean, yeah, “previous child star who went through some serious trauma (allegedly!) has a drug problem.”

Statically, the fact that he’s still alive is honestly surprising, given his history.

  3. Jais says:

The Hollywood Reporter strikes again. But but… it’s legacy media! Please. Penske owns this one right? The sources saying he’s not living his purpose…to make music and money…sounds like a bitter person no longer making money from Justin. I barely know Justin Bieber and was never a fan but even I’m like gmafb with this.

    • BeanieBean says:

Exactly. This whole thing reads like a lot of folks got booted from the gravy train & they’re unhappy about it.

    • Lucy says:

1000% that’s how I read it too. Never been a fan, and he was definitely an a hole out loud for a bit there. He was also exposed to some really awful stuff (at the minimum). But this just reads like someone telling him that he needs them back, because he can’t handle his own life or make his own decisions. Which maybe he can’t, but that’s on him and the weird cult “church” he’s a part of.

  4. sevenblue says:

He started being more active in social media. I think, it is probably because he is a new father, which can be overwhelming and there were a lot of reports before that Hailey is his emotional support. Now, they have a baby, so that part of their relationship probably changed.

On the other hand, Scooter is the kind of guy who will spread hit pieces on you if you try to leave him. He did the same thing to Ariana when she first left him. He spoke on record that his people were telling him to destroy her on the media, but he didn’t, because he knew she was gonna come back to him. So, the latest weird pieces on him and the negative social media campaign on his wife would just be that.

Wow. There’s a whole lot to unpack here. Overall yeah he sounds like he’s in a good place and doing what he wants with his life. The former much larger team that is no longer needed and the ex-hangers-on are whining and trying to create noise that a media industry that loves the idea of personal drama and pain so it can profit from reporting on it are doing all they can to make a story where there probably isn’t one.

Given the stories we were reading about him back when he was still actively making music and touring this sounds like a success for him personally.

  6. Jaded says:

His parents, especially his father, forced then fed off his talent and success. They were enablers of the worst kind and promoted his drug-taking. His dad partied with him and allowed him to spend time with some pretty dangerous people. He was out of control and didn’t have a safe or caring home environment with parents who could raise him properly. No wonder he spiraled out of control for a while. I’m sure his marriage and fatherhood have caused him to reconsider a LOT of stuff like getting rid of some of the toxic people in his life and making his own career decisions. Team Bieber.

  7. TN Democrat says:

So. The executives and hangers on that fueled his addictions and bad behavior to exploit him and make him compliant are bigly mad they can no longer mooch off him and are running to the media complaining and planting innuendo? Hopefully, he is living his best life and okay, but unloading Scooter and all those sycophants has got to be an improvement.

  8. VilleRose says:

This all sounds rather infantilizing? He is 31 years old now, not 11. I know he really never got a childhood, he was constantly touring and being exposed to all kinds of things that child stars have no business dealing with. I didn’t really follow him because I was too old for his demographic when he made it big but I’m familiar with his biggest hits. I doubt Scooter Braun protected him from all that. I bet becoming a father made him realize just how messed up his childhood was. I have no idea what his relationship is like with his wife. But sometimes people who had a wild and partying lifestyle in the spotlight in their younger years realize they want privacy and more stability as they get older. It sounds like Justin doesn’t want that crazy lifestyle anymore. He’s not necessarily a has been and I bet he’ll still make music but it might be more low key and not the crazy touring of sold out stadiums. Which is fine! Not everyone has to live like Taylor Swift their whole lives.

  9. Mia says:

His team doesn’t realise his popularity is due to him not them. He hasn’t released anything in 4 years yet IS competing with the likes of Taylor Swift on the charts. In fact he’s on track to overtake her monthly Spotify listeners in the next couple weeks based on both of their average daily gain/loss. He gets more daily YouTube streams than her too. The fact he is doing so well without lifting a finger and his ex team being disgruntled shows the demand for his music remains massive. He could release the worst song ever later this year and it would go #1 on his name and demand for new music alone. He’s good. The team seems annoyed they can no longer milk him dry

  10. Durga says:

He’s the equivalent of Amanda Bynes, except that his horrid upbringing & mental illness have hurt more people than just himself.
