Duchess Meghan spoke to ‘Highbrow Hippie’ founder Kadi Lee on COAFF

The Duchess of Sussex’s Confessions of a Female Founder podcast drops their new episodes on Tuesdays, and this week’s episode is an interview/conversation with Kadi Lee, the colorist who founded Highbrow Hippie. Kadi Lee has been Meghan’s colorist since 2020, and Meghan invested in Kadi’s Highbrow Hippie. This conversation was so interesting! Meghan ended up talking about the “American Riviera Orchard” trademark issues and how the name ended up feeling like a “word salad.”

The Duchess of Sussex has claimed she didn’t like her old brand name American Riviera Orchard. Meghan ran into trademark issues when the US Patent and Trademark Office said geographical locations could not be patented, and she eventually renamed her venture As Ever. But in the latest episode of her podcast Confessions of a Female Founder, Meghan called the old name “word salad”, adding: “I didn’t love that so much.”

The duchess recorded a conversation with her hair colourist and “dear friend” Kadi Lee, co-founder of hair wellness brand Highbrow Hippie, which Meghan reportedly invested in last year. After she was forced to turn to a new name, she insisted it was “really just helpful to have that quiet period” before her As Ever name was unveiled, “when no one was sniffing around”.

The former Suits actress said: “I had secured As Ever as a name in 2022, and then, as everything started to evolve last year, and bringing in a partner the size that it was, it was just so interesting. You remember, I said ‘I like American Riviera as an umbrella’, and then be able to have verticals beneath it. And maybe have the Orchard really small. But when that’s not feasible… suddenly it became this word salad. I didn’t love that so much. I was like ‘OK, let’s go back to the thing that I’ve always loved. Let’s use the name that I protected for a reason that had sort of been under wraps’. And then we were able to focus in the quiet and put our heads down and build on something that no one was sniffing around to even see about. It was really just helpful to have that quiet period.”

Meghan greeted Lee by saying: “Disregard the state of my hair right now. I’m so excited I’m seeing you next week. I should have a baseball cap on.”

The Duchess said the pair met in 2020 – the year of Megxit, when Meghan and the Duke of Sussex quit the working monarchy for a new life in the US – and told of her attempts to dye her hair at home during the pandemic. Meghan said: “It was 2020 – it was very much 2020. My family had just moved to California. We were staying in our friend’s home and because it was the pandemic, I kept ordering boxed hair dye, and I thought I’m gonna look just like she does on the box. And instead it was this very inky, almost Elvira-esque black hair.”

Lee, who was called in at the time to help Meghan with her hair, said: “I remember meeting you guys, and you were so warm and both you and H wrapped us up in these big bear hugs and I was like ‘I don’t even know these people and I’m not a hugger but let’s do it’.”

Reflecting on having to close her hair salon during the pandemic, Lee added: “It felt like such whiplash and it felt like, gosh we cannot get a break, you know?” Meghan laughed and added: “Oh, I understand.”

[From The Telegraph]

I was fine with the ARO name but I wasn’t in love with it, and I like that Meghan admits that she wasn’t in love with it either. It’s also a confirmation that ARO, however unintentionally at the time, was the “cover name” while Meghan made up her mind to go back to As Ever. I also wonder if Meghan ever considered putting her own name in her brand name – as in, American Riviera Orchard could have become something like Meghan’s ARO, and As Ever could have been As Ever, Meghan. As for at-home box dyes… I use box dyes! You sort of have to go a touch lighter to get a dark color which doesn’t look too inky. But yes, it’s better to have a professional colorist on hand. PS… Kadi is a Leo, like Meghan. That’s why they get along so well.

  1. “It felt like such whiplash and it felt like, gosh we cannot get a break, you know?” Meg’s reply was gold “Oh I understand “. I don’t care why or how she changed the name but the gutter press does. I’m just happy she is on the ground running with her project and being very successful doing it!

I liked all of the episodes so far. They deliver a different view to entrepreneurship and I like that I gain insight to Meghan’s relationships with the founders. The conversations are light hearted but very insightful. The vibe I get when listening is like chatting over brunch and getting tidbits of information on being a founding entrepreneur. I am proud of how Meghan pulled together 3 projects in tandem (Netflix show, As Ever business, COAFF podcast). That’s a lot to do within in a year (or maybe 18 months?).

I wonder, if Meghan didn’t put her name on the brand in case she sells it in the future. When a brand name includes the founder’s name, it looks weird when the company is sold to someone else and they have a right to use your name. “As Ever” is such a pretty name for a brand, so the change was a good decision on her part and she also said that gave her and her team space to work under this name discreetly, because no one was following their every move while they focused on ARO.

I worked on a small hair salon when I was young. We had a very good colorists who had a good number of loyal clients. She kept a notebook with all her clients’ hair color mix ratios. It is really an art even coming up with the right color for each person.

I’m thoroughly enjoying Confessions; every episode is so intimate and the conversations flow so smoothly – I must admit to preferring this format over the structure used for “Archetypes”.

Meghan seems more relaxed and open, which encourages her guests to feel comfortable and be somewhat unguarded. It makes for an engaging and interesting listening experience.

I get what she means about the box color looking weird. Even for at home stuff you still need to have a little bit of a touch to get the result you want. Back when I was still relaxing my hair in the early 2000s, I could never get it as bone straight at home as my cousin could, she just had that touch. I imagine it’s probably like that with color too, that you can’t just grab a color there’s some technique there too.

And I cracked up when Meghan was describing using the Marcel oven in her sorority house, because I immediately smelled that burnt paper towel/crispy hair/Motions combination and it took me back immediately! The entire floor of our residence hall would smell like that during homecoming and we’d get the same reaction from our non POC floor mates.

All my best friends are Leo’s.. so I loved that acknowledgement. I am enjoying her Tuesday podcast so much. I’m so happy she is topping charts 📈

I didn’t mind American River Orchard but I like As Ever too. But I’m not a business person so I’m not one to even know. The episode sounds cute and I can’t wait to listen to it later today.

So is the Telegraph going to report on every episode? I did wonder how the British press was going to navigate the discussion about race and black women in business. Their solution was to not mention it at all. I really enjoyed this episode.

Torygraph wants the click & big money from mentioning Meghan’s name (even in reports/stories having nothing related to Meghan), of course they’re going to write many articles on COAFF. Using “M3gxit” and quote & unqote “dear friend” were the Torygraph’s way getting their dig in. I mean, they thought Meghan was lying that Kadi is her dear friend? Stop reading anything published by BM, except Byline Times, is my humble advise to everyone who does not want toxicity & negativity.

I enjoyed Archetype and the expert’s inputs in them, because I’m a scientific thinking person. I’m really enjoying COAFF, too, for the cozy, informal conversation style and learning a lot from Meghan’s podcasts.

  9. Eurydice says:

Really, the press is so awful. Ignore the 50 minutes of Kadi Lee telling her story and focus on the 2 minutes of Meghan mentioning…anything about herself.

I enjoy these podcasts. I won’t say I’m learning anything new about entrepreneurship, but I love hearing people’s stories.

  10. Over it says:

Thank you Kaiser and celebitchy for always posting the episodes of Meghan podcast. It’s truly appreciated.

  11. Calliope says:

I was never thrilled with the name although I love the images it evokes. Very curious about the idea of it as an umbrella for verticals and looking forward to what else she’s wanting to do.

And their 2020 conversation reminds me of my hair stylist mixing color for me those months so I could do it myself, so great. Helped me feel more like myself in the chaos.
