Robert Kennedy is accessing the private medical files of people with autism

Of all the predictable moves being made by the Trump administration, one of the MOST predictable was “Robert Kennedy gets appointed to HHS and spends taxpayers’ resources on his unhinged autism conspiracies.” As soon as Kennedy endorsed Trump, this was always the plan. Kennedy has zero interest in actual science or medicine, so he’s radically altering what Health and Human Services does and does not do. Flu shots? Nah. Encourage parents to give their children the MMR vaccine? Nope. Spread offensive and dangerous conspiracies about how people with autism are burdens on society who never pay taxes? Absolutely. After Kennedy’s offensive statements about autism last week, he’s doubling down. He wants HHS to get their hands on autistic people’s medical records, and he wants the government to monitor those people on a daily and intimate level.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the secretary of health and human services, is set to amass the private medical records of Americans for a new autism study.

On April 21, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya — director of the National Institutes of Health — announced that the NIH will provide Kennedy with data pulled from a number of federal and commercial databases, CBS News reports. Kennedy — who has previously promoted a scientifically debunked claim that autism is caused by vaccines — is also launching a new registry to track Americans with autism.

Bhattacharya explained that between 10 and 20 outside groups of researchers will have access to these records, and they will be provided with grant funding to carry out Kennedy’s autism studies. He added that this data will allow researchers to study “comprehensive” patient data with “broad coverage” of the U.S. population for the first time.

Bhattacharya said during a presentation that the data will include medical records from pharmacy chains, lab tests, genomics data from patients treated by the Department of Veterans Affairs and Indian Health Service, claims from private insurers, data from smartwatches and fitness trackers and more. The NIH director noted that combining the data could lead to “real-time health monitoring” on Americans.

“What we’re proposing is a transformative real-world data initiative, which aims to provide a robust and secure computational data platform for chronic disease and autism research,” he said, per the outlet.

This news comes on the heels of statements Kennedy made at a press conference on April 16, when he claimed that “autism destroys families…These are kids who will never pay taxes. They’ll never hold a job. They’ll never play baseball. They’ll never write a poem. They’ll never go out on a date. Many of them will never use a toilet unassisted.”

Remember during the pandemic when anti-vaxx idiots used to argue that vaccine mandates violated their HIPAA? In America, HIPAA is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act which federally protects Americans from the government (or anyone else) from accessing their medical information without consent. Vaccine mandates are not a violation of HIPAA. A worm-brained nutcase accessing thousands of Americans’ medical records without permission, all to “monitor” them and track them, is a violation of HIPAA. The only thing that will save people in this situation is that Kennedy is too dumb to actually create this monitoring system. All he’s doing right now is a gross violation of medical privacy.

This is a HIPPA violation, but this administration is lawless and without ethics. I hope that there is lawsuit slapped on the worm brained fuckers ass so hard the larvae from those dead work eggs are knocked out. I fucking hate it here!

    • HeatherC says:

HIPPA is a federal law. And we’re quickly and devastatingly learning every day that what the federal government has given, the federal government can take away. Everything from money/grants/entitlements to rights and protections to our very privacy.

I wonder if RFK Jr will be the one to review my son’s data when he plays baseball or goes on a date or goes to work.

  2. Side Eye says:

This is absolutely terrifying and right out of the nazi playbook. I remember when he was discussing putting people on ADHD meds in camps. I am really really scared for so many people.

    • BeanieBean says:

This is it. This is absolutely a Third Reich remake. To see an NIH doctor so blithely talk about data pulls knowing full well this is a HIPAA violation is breathtaking.

    • Lau says:

Wasn’t it Trump’s nephew who said that his uncle told him that his disable son would be better off dead ? They’re going to harm a lot of people.

    • pottymouth pup says:

It took Hitler 6 years to establish the Reich’s Committee for the Scientific Treatment of Severe Hereditary and Congenital Diseases. It looks like this administration can’t wait to implement their favorite nazi policies

  3. DancingCorgi says:

Next step, eugenics. Right on schedule.

  4. Sue says:

I was so naive and thought when Trump announced he’d let Bobby “go wild on the medicines” that would be the final straw that lost Trump the presidency. I thought that must scare every single parent into not voting for him. Oh, my sweet summer child, I thought too highly of my fellow Americans’ intelligence.

  5. MsIam says:

Lawsuit incoming. I don’t see how anyone with a conscience supports this gross administration.

  6. Abby says:

This is terrifying. There’s lots of places where a diagnosis might be disclosed. Summer camp forms. Therapy. Applications for grants. Field trip activities. And they just plugged into servers when they wanted SS records, you know?

This is really scary to me. And right on track with becoming Nazi 2.0.

  7. SarahMcK says:

Also, no one gave their consent for their data to be used in this research so it’s an enormous ethics violation as well.

  8. wolfmamma says:

Maybe the most mentally ill of all the mentally ill folks in the regime. Dangerously so.

  9. TeamMontecito says:

What the f-cking f-ck? Federal eugenics. Right on schedule.

  10. UpIn Toronto says:

Push back, HARD. We are seeing this administration get slowed down by people pushing back and asserting rights bc this administration is violating so many of them. Autism advocacy and supporters need to find the lawyers that will fight Trump in court. This nut job has nothing but his good family name, which he is using to shame them all. I pray the autism community pushes back mega hard

  11. DebDowner says:

The government, under these losers, is closing/deleting legitimate research databases affecting actual scientific work across many fields of study, and yet the same idiots are trying to cobble together their own database, with no grounding in research methodology, statistics, science…what a joke.

  12. Kittenmom says:

“a new registry to track Americans with autism” has a very nazi ring to it 🤔

  13. bisynaptic says:

I do hope there’s a class-action HIPAA suit in these people’s future. Because we’re headed to concentration camps.

  14. TUCKEREDMOUSE says:

If this doesn’t scare you it should. What’s next? Obesity? Diabetes?Depression? Lupus? If their getting into our medical records for Autism what’s to stop them for something else? This reeks of 1930s Germany and its discrimination. We need to leave this to Scientists not to a hairbrained idiot who doesn’t know his right hand from his left.

    • BeanieBean says:

Yeah, little worried now that I OKd the Mayo Clinic taking some blood for future genetic research (I have an hereditary neuropathy). Then again, these people are accessing data WITHOUT permission.

    • Blithe says:

This does scare me. They’re not asking for permission to access multiple records from multiple sources— that should be confidential and protected. Beyond that, is there an accurate way to get this information— and ONLY this information — without also swooping up other information? Probably not. So their “research” will be identifying quite a lot of information, and none of us will know who has what should be protected medical information about us and our families OR what they will do with it at any point in the future.

I agree with @UpInToronto. All of us should be pushing back against these violations.
Does anyone have ideas about ways to do that — beyond using our professional organizations and urging our Congressional representatives to take a stand?

      • Blithe says:

What does it even mean that data will be collected from smart watches, fitness trackers “and more”? It sounds like private corporations are providing access to lots of personal data — that goes way beyond the stated purpose, which is itself a violation of privacy rights.

  15. smcollins says:

As the mom of a non-verbal autistic 9-year-old this is fucking terrifying. I would never consent to her medical records being handed over for something like this, or her being monitored & studied like some lab rat, but apparently her privacy rights don’t matter because she’s not a real person in these disgustIng people’s eyes.

  16. The Great Mimi says:

    Scary stuff.

  17. Maja says:

There is already very good research on chronic diseases, and I look forward to all the serious and high-level researchers leaving the US and coming to Europe. These right-wing cadres there are not looking for science, they are looking for incompetent people to say what the right-wing politicians want. Pure fascism.

  18. QuiteContrary says:

This is indeed terrifying. RFK Jr. also wants to reduce the use of anti-anxiety meds. And obesity meds. He’s insane.

  19. Anon @ Work says:

    This can’t possibly end well.
