Jessica Simpson: “I’m not as guarded as you would think”

I’m sorry if I gave the impression that I don’t care for Jessica Simpson – I do. I like her in the way you love a really dumb, shiny puppy who desperate for attention. I mean, of course I’m going to love the puppy. The puppy can’t take care of itself or hold a complicated thought and the puppy messes itself, but still, the puppy is cute and harmless and sweet and it does not have a vicious bone in its body. Same with Jessica. I get why men (and women like her): she’s uncomplicated, she wants to be loved, she’s vulnerable without seeming pitiful, and she’s shiny.

That being said, I rolled my eyes a little at Jessica’s latest interview. She sat down with La Seacrest as KIIS-FM, and they talked about all of the same stuff that she discussed with Oprah. And Jessica had pretty much the same answers. The only new stuff was her commenting on Tony Romo (“Tony was so great and so supportive and never ever made me feel like I wasn’t sexy” – because being “sexy” is the most important thing, right?) and Billy Corgan (“He’s a very, very dear friend”). Here’s more:

Despite John Mayer’s recent kiss-and-tell revelations about their sex life, Jessica Simpson says she remains, deep down, a trusting person.

“I’m not as guarded as you would think. I should probably be more guarded. I trust a lot of people, actually,” the actress and singer, 29, told Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM radio show Tuesday morning.

Not that she’s over feeling disappointed in Mayer, who later apologized. “That’s truly how I felt and still feel,” she said. “Somebody that you have cared about for a long time, you just hope they can keep the intimate things intimate.”

On a lighter note, Simpson – whose new VH1 show, The Price of Beauty, premieres March 15 – introduced her new single, “Who We Are,” and spoke warmly of Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, who worked on it with her. There has been speculation that the two are in a budding romantic relationship, though Simpson recently said they were just friends.

“I can’t find good enough words to speak about Billy,” Simpson said. “He’s a very, very dear friend. For him to give his time and his talents and share them with me, it was a great experience. And I hope we can do more music together.”

“Who We Are” is the theme song for The Price of Beauty, in which Simpson travels the world looking at what is considered beautiful in various cultures. The show was inspired by her weight controversy last year, when, she said, “if I put on 10 pounds, it was the end of the world.”

Looking back on those days, Simpson said then-boyfriend Tony Romo helped her through the worst of it.

“Tony was so great and so supportive and never ever made me feel like I wasn’t sexy,” she said. “I was embarrassed by what the world was saying, but I still had my friends and loved ones and family who appreciated me.”

Totally boring/tedious/please-be-a-bitch-once-please, right? I would love it if Jessica had one bitchy thing to say about Mayer, Romo, or her father. But I get it. This is the new Jessica, the girl trying to be a classy, enlightened woman. Unfortunately, not everyone feels that way. Gawker had a very scathing piece called “Jessica Simpson: It’s Time To Say Goodbye” which basically describes what a non-celebrity Jessica really is, and will continue to be. Here’s a short excerpt from the piece (full piece here):

She wanted to be a real star who could do things other than pitch unnecessary corporate goods. But her albums soon stopped selling and she skipped from dud to dud, trying to act in Dukes of Hazzard and something ineffable with Dane Cook. Then, like Jean-Claude Van Damme before her, her flicks went direct to DVD. She tried to make the switch from pop to country, but even stupid Christians in the Bible Belt didn’t want her at that point. Like a rotten tomato stuck behind the crisper, she was starting to stink up the joint, but no one could clean her out.

Why? Blame the Celebrity Industrial Complex! Even though we were no longer interested in her entertainment products, she’d started a career as a professional girlfriend, going out very publicly with musician John Mayer and then Dallas Cowboy Tony Romo. The rumors are still swirling that she’s inexplicably dating Smashing Pumpkins singer Billy Corgan, which would be the most interesting thing she’s done in five years. And when she needs a little career bump she hits the cover of Vanity Fair or Oprah—not to talk about a project, but her personal life. We find it hard to care about either.

Now she’s back for another round through the publicity cycle, as if she might have something new or interesting to share with us. Sorry, Jessica, you don’t. You’re like that sweater we once bought on sale hoping that we would one day fit into it, but we suddenly realized that we will never wear, no matter how hard we try. You won’t ever fit us and it’s better that we donate you to charity and clear you out of the closet. Because we only have room for so much, and newer, prettier things have come along that we like. Yes, Jessica we’re getting rid of you. And since we barely even wanted you in the first place, please do us the courtesy of staying away.

Totally harsh, right? I mean, I don’t hate the girl, and she’s funny sometimes, and she’s never mean. Which is, like, a million times better than what I can say about most “celebrities” these days. Maybe her job is just being someone harmless that we can all root for/sympathize with?

By the way, here’s Jessica new song, it’s for The Price of Beauty and it’s called “Who We Are”. Zzzzz…. Wha? Oh, here it is:

I think Gawker is spot on.
I know I couldnt care about anything she does, her 15 minutes have long past.
If it wasnt for the bashing she does get, I dont think she would get any media attention. My prediction is she’ll soon hit the reality shows for celebrity has-beens.

  3. Ursula says:

I find her personality way to plain to even waste my time thinking about her. I lose respect for any one she dates. She is like being born again, it takes a certain flaw in character for one to start bible thumping like they are on crack.

  4. canadianchick says:

I like Gawker but sometimes they seem to have their panties needlessly in a twist. She’s a cute puppy and I hope she finds someone to take her home soon so we can stop watching her trainwreck of a love life.

  5. Leticia says:

Ursula, your comment about born again Christians is prejudiced. where is the tolerance that you probably show to everything else?

totally love the way they use her old pics to promote her latest whatever it is she’s selling. how insulting.

I don’t see why Jess would be ejected from the celebrity pool anytime before Heidi Montag, any Bachelor/ette or Girl Next Door, the entire cast of Jersey Shore and all the Real Housewives, if that were possible. She’s a real celeb, at least, she worked at getting where she is. I’m so sick of the wastes of space that I’ll take any actual working musician, comedian or actor over the reality tv dummies.

I don’t think she realizes that she is as beautiful as she is…especially the times she ventures out sans the makeup. She is cute, talented, sexy and a wonderful example of womanhood. I wish we would meet!

Gawker is right. I have never thought Jessica Simpson is a harmless puppy craving attention. She is more like a terrible tick infestation on a puppy, desperate to feed. She attaches herself to whatever famous name she can and feeds off his fame until she can find another host.

I could totally believe she and her dad were behind the rumor that Jeremy Renner was interested in her just so Jessica could glom onto all the Oscar buzz he was getting.

I’m glad he denied the rumor because I am like Ursula and lose respect for anyone that dates her.

  12. scotchy says:

yikes, that is one awful song.

    she should stop singing.. immediately.

  13. Solveig says:

Is this the song Corgan wrote for her? If it is so unfortunately it’s the best I heard from him in a while.
