Do you know what I wore when I was 17 years old? Jeans. And the occasional goth-lite getup, like my favorite long black skirt (it was so flattering!) and black t-shirt. Back then, the one time I wore a slightly cleavage-revealing navy sundress to work, I was sexually harassed. So I learned to harness my boobs and hide my problem areas, like my thighs. I could never imagine traipsing around LA in Daisy Dukes like Miley Cyrus. Not only would my thighs be a problem, I wouldn’t want to. She looks ridiculous. Why do your girls/women dress like this? And why go with beaver-grazing short shorts, tank top and vest, and then add to it slouchy boots? Ugh.
Anyway, Miley continues her promotional duties for The Last Song. She sat down for an interview with Parade in which she talks about Michelle Obama’s beauty, her love for boyfriend Liam Hemsworth, and her love of both Dolly Parton and Lady Gaga:
Has her high energy ever been mistaken for ADD or ADHD? “When I was in middle school I was told I might have one of those and if I were in high school now they would most likely tell me I do have one or both of those and put me on some sort of crazy medication.”
Moving beyond her high-energy reputation.
“When I was eight years old, people were going, ‘Oh, my God. She’s crazy! What’s she going to be like when she’s 17?’ Well I’m 17 now and I’m doing pretty well for whatever it is that I am.”Finding unbiased love with Liam Helmsworth. “[Liam has] become my best friend in the whole wide world. I love him. He really respects me for who I am because coming from Australia, he really didn’t know me as the celebrity I am here. I got to tell him about myself on my own terms and my own way. He had no preconceived notion of who I was supposed to be.”
Tapping into her grandfather’s political legacy.
“My character’s name [in The Last Song] is Ronnie and that is in memory of my grandfather, Ron Cyrus, who died a couple of years ago from lung cancer. He was a politician in Kentucky and served in the state legislature for 21 years. A Democrat. I recently did a concert in Washington D.C. and I met all these people who knew my grandfather and told me what he had meant to them.”Did the Obama girls come to the concert?
“Yes. The First Lady brought them. I had met them before because I sang at the inauguration. I think Michelle Obama is the most beautiful person to ever live in the White House. When she came to my concert she was dressed so classy and yet funky. I didn’t feel like I was talking to the First Lady. I just felt like I was talking to a normal person. I think that’s what’s so attractive about that whole family.”Having Dolly Parton as her godmother.
“She is the nicest person in the world. She’s so easy to talk to. She’s awesome. I love her. She always tells me just to do what I love and if I’m not having fun it’s not working. I don’t know how old she is at this point but every time she is on the stage she is smiling from ear to ear.”What she thinks of music’s latest sensation, Lady Gaga.
“I love her. She’s really smart. I caught her on Oprah and she was really chill. I used to be like, yeah, I guess she’s talented but how much is she really singing. But I’ve become a convert. She has to be smart to come up with all her gags and the stuff she comes up with. She gets it. She knows exactly what she’s doing. It’s like Dolly Parton. Dolly plays up that I’m-a-cute-dumb-blonde but, believe me, she’s not dumb. She’s sitting on a ba-jillion dollars.”What she’s watching — and not watching — on TV.
“I am screwed up in the mind a little bit because I’m not like other 16- or 17-year-old girls. I have no perspective of who exactly my fans are, to tell you the truth. Teenage girls in general are hard for me. I’m not a girl’s girl. And I don’t really watch television at all. But there is one show I’m addicted to: RuPaul’s Drag Race. I love me some RuPaul. I love RuPaul’s motto. It goes something like, ‘A real lady is never bitchy, a real lady is sassy.’”Why she’s steering clear of the country scene.
“It scares me, that’s why. It feels contrived on so many levels. Unless you’re wearing a cowboy hat and cowboy boots and singing and whining about your girlfriend or boyfriend leaving you it’s not going to sell. I think that’s why my dad finally got out of it. You have to wear those cowboy boots and be sweet as pie. It makes me nervous, the politics of it all.Her relationship with the ever-present paparazzi.
“The other day I felt a little bit in danger for the first time because there were too many photographers following me in too many cars. And I have to ask myself, ‘Why would any other 50-year-old man who was stalking a 17-year-old girl go to jail, but not these guys? I’m not as American as anyone else?’ I mean, they couldn’t sit outside of a high school but they can sit outside my recording studio. It’s creepy.”Knowing her faith.
“The one thing I’m really strong about regarding my religious beliefs is that you should know a little bit about everything before you define your own beliefs. I think all religions have a good practice in them. Liam and I have been reading about Buddhism lately and it’s all about hope and love. To me, faith is about having a clean slate and a clean start.”Making mistakes and learning the power of forgiveness.
“You don’t have to say, ‘Well, I’m already a bad person so I might as well go ahead and do this other bad thing.’ It’s about knowing sometime that what you did wasn’t always the best choice but you now have the chance to start over again. That’s the biggest thing to me about my faith: you don’t have to live tallying up all the things you’ve done wrong. It’s all about forgiveness. If God who created the world can forgive you then you can forgive yourself.”Tweeting up controversy.
“There has been so much controversy sometimes about what I’ve said or done because I believe there are no mistakes because God is the only one who can judge us. That’s the reason I deleted my Twitter account because I said on there that I believed in gay marriage because everyone should have the right to love each other, and I got such hate mail about my being a bad person.”

Once again, I kind of have to give it to Miley for maturing before our eyes. She sounded pretty intelligent with some of those answers, although I would imagine that if you could hear her voice, that would go away. I thought her answer about the “politics” of country music was funny. I don’t follow that country music scene, is what she said true? Is it all about hats and heartbreak? And I also kind of adore how she seems incredibly open-minded about drag queens and gay people. You know she’s totally alienating a significant percent of her Bible-belt fan base, but I think she really feels this way. Bless her heart.
I’ve thrown in some photos from Miley’s shoot with Parade too. You can see the full slideshow here.

Miley has a killer figure, but those jeans and that top are not flattering.
I like her. As much as I can’t stand the other tweens from Disney she really stands out and I like her. She does sound very mature….not all stupid like some other young stars, like that Taylor girl from Gossip Girls. I also enjoy booty shorts and dressing kinda goth. I like different fashions.
i wonder if they cleaned up her conversation. read other quotes from her and they’re full of “like,” etc. smoke and mirrors, these mags.
i would not say that is all country. Carrie Underwood does not go around in her cowboy boots and hat, neither does Taylor swift or Shania and Martina nor does Reba. Many of the men do, but that’s their own choice.
And i’m pretty sure Billy Ray was kicked out for his mullet.
how long do you think it took to actually come up with these answers? she seems like she might possibly be maturing but i’m not holding my breath
She’s a TEENAGER!!! I was at the mall last week and I was appalled by some of the clothing that the parents of some of these girls let them walk out of the house in! But, Miley does not look bad. In fact, she is more covered up than an s-load of the girls walking around in schools! Compared to what you say you wore as a 17 year old, what she wears is vastly different, but her clothing is not any more controversial or scant than any other 17 year old!
Hmm, not really a Miley fan but I have to agree about loving Gaga, Dolly, & Michelle Obama. Don’t love bootie shorts – but to each her own there. Many people don’t get my love for blazers either. :^)
I don’t really follow country music that much, but i don’t really think there are any more politics there than in standard hollywood. everybody has to fit into a certain mold. each person has a personna, thats how the biz works. I will say though that most people who are successful in country can actually sing, well. the autotune sound is not appreciated in country like pop.
as for the shorts, ehh, if you’ve got the legs, may as well wear them now, cuz you won’t be able to for long!
Well, I have to admit that is the one time I have heard Miley say things that sounded remotely intelligent. I am with whoever who said that they probably edited out about 487 “like’s” from the quotes and random gum smacking. I don’t know what it is, but Miley just makes me want to scratch my eyeballs out! I rarely have such a negative reaction to celebrities, but there are a few who I just cannot stand the sight of! It might also have to do with the fact that I am a lawyer in my mid-30’s, so Disney stars are not my forte. For me, the disdain started when Miley came to the Oscars (BTW I hate that they invite these teeney boppers just to get the teen audiences to watch) and she just acted like a redneck entitled little girl who did not belong. The girl has no humility about her whatsoever.
Agree… It is impossible to see “mature” and “intelligent” when looking at that photo… the pose may be a split second of awkwardness, but those shorts were an intentinoal choice…
I love Miley Cyrus! After being sort of forced to watch Hannah Montana M-F when my 7-year-old and her friends LIVED for the show, I shockingly found myself mildly entertained by it. Then I saw a mini True Hollywood Story about her — Miley’s baby pics are the cutest things ever. Ever! (My 18-year-old daughter says she never liked her, and my 10-year-old is over her. Neither really like the fact that their mother likes her – so I’ll be in the closet if anyone needs me.)
#4, to be fair, many people who are fans of country music put Taylor into the realm of “pop” country, i.e., not really country.
I mean, her team effin puts her nominations in awards for Pop categories and contemporary categories.
AS true as that maybe she is a member of the Grand Ole Oprey, which is one of country music’s highest honors so she is country, but i do not disagree with you on your point. There have been quite a few cross over artists, but i think my point stands-mainly jsut the men of country have the “hat and boots” thing going on. A majority of the females do not. And Billy Ray was part of the old days (as is Dolly) of country, and it is much more main stream now.
Hated her at first, mainly because I watched Hannah Montannah when extremely hungover and was totally confused by it. But now, I can’t help it, I’ve liked her for a while. And she likes RuPaul’s Drag Race?! Never would’ve picked that. I love that show!
she’s looking kinda chubby and untoned. ew.
“He really respects me for who I am because coming from Australia, he really didn’t know me as the celebrity I am here. I got to tell him about myself on my own terms and my own way. He had no preconceived notion of who I was supposed to be.”
Ahahahahhahahhahaa!!
Okay.
Hannah Montana airs here on the same network that supposedly showed Liam in that lame-ass soap opera, Home and Away.
It’s hard not to be impressed by some of those answers.
I think you have to lean on the “be sweet as pie” part of country music politics. Country music fans will turn on you if you have an affair, do drugs, etc — unlike rock and pop fans, who forgive and forget a lot. (I’m from the South, so I’ve heard conversations that make me think this way.)
I am SO HAPPY to hear Dolly Parton get some love. Not only is she stinking rich, but also she’s the reason why Sevier County in Tennessee is no longer the pit of Hades that it used to be. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park screwed up the economic ecosystem there, and people were sadly dirt-poor until Dolly kicked up tourism with Dollywood. She also sends every kid in Tennessee a book each year until they’re five.
