This is the fantasy, isn’t it? After a 13 year friendship that has seen babies, blockbusters, Oscars, husbands, a parade of models and international fame, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet fall for each other at long last, giving into the collective desires of the world to find love and peace and stability in a real relationship. Too bad most of the reports that have Leo and Kate hooking up read like Titanic-era fan fiction. Here’s OK Mag’s take:

When Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio played Titanic’s lovers 13 years ago, they created a deep and lasting relationship. “Leo and I are kindred spirits — we’re cut from the same cloth,” Kate explained. “We’re like one of those old couples in When Harry Met Sally,” added Leo.

Now that Kate has officially split from her husband of nearly seven years, director Sam Mendes, insiders say the former co-stars’ “intense bond” has gone beyond friendship.

Leo was there for Kate when her marriage started to go south two years ago, around the time they reunited on screen in Revolutionary Road.

The film was directed by Sam, who, an insider says, became uncomfortable with how cozy the co-stars were on set.

“Kate became closer to Leo than ever, “explains a friend. “And that became a problem: The more she drifted from Sam, the closer she got to Leo.”

Meh. Sure, I’ll buy that Leo and Kate are tight. And I’ll even buy that Kate is leaning on Leo (and probably many friends) during this rough time. But I just doubt this is “on”.

The Enquirer is running a similar story, though. Their sources are claiming that Kate and Leo have been too close for years and years, and Kate’s relationship with Leo is what sabotaged both of her marriages:

“There’s no question that Kate’s openly loved Leo for a very long time, and her feelings for him drove a wedge between her and Sam,” a source divulged.

“Kate and Leo talk on the phone all of the time, and she opens up to him about absolutely everything. I think her relationship with Leo has made things with Sam unfixable.”

“They basically grew up together,” the source said. “When Leo needs advice on something, he turns to Kate., He says she knows him better than he knows himself.”

“Kate knew her husband always sensed her closeness to Leo, which turned him off and made him think about where the marriage was headed,” the insider said. “Finally, the two of them were honest with one another – Sam admitted he needed someone else in his life and Kate confessing she wanted to move on.”

“Kate had the same super-close bond with Leo while she was with Jim [her first husband] as she did while with Sam,” a source says. “No other guy can compete with her feelings for him.”

Really? Do you think Leo and Kate have been super-tight ever since Titanic? Or have they just been friends who see each other occasionally and sometimes call to check up? I really don’t know. But they do look nice together, don’t they?

Meanwhile, those Sam Mendes-and-Rebecca-Hall rumors won’t die. Star Magazine has a quote from “TV pundit” Ricky Sky who claims, “Rebecca is stunning, and she and Sam are close. It’s easy to see why Kate went crazy over the friendship.” Star also sort-of confirms the rumors in the British tabloids, claiming that towards the end of Sam and Kate’s marriage, Sam was spending more and more time with Rebecca. A source claims: “He’d been withdrawn and shut himself off from Kate. She had been trying her best to keep things together for months, but in the end it was too much.”
