Zoe Saldana: “I have to give myself permission to be pretty”

self1

Zoe Saldana appears on the May issue of Self Magazine, most likely to promote her new movie, The Losers. The Losers actually looks like a cool film, and it stars certified hotties Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Idris Elba. So, Saldana should be raving about them, right? Not so much. She just talks about her fashion and her style vibe. I actually believe that Saldana is a little fashionista – her stylist is Rachel Zoe, and Saldana has made a few appearances on The Rachel Zoe Project. Saldana seemed very opinionated, and like a difficult client to dress because of her very strong opinions about what she should be wearing. That being said, Rachel Zoe seems like a bad-fashion enabler for Saldana, considering some of the cheesy, cheap-looking crap that Saldana wore during the awards season.

Saldana talks to Self about the difference between sexiness and being aggressive: “Sometimes you’re sexy confident or you’re aggressive confident. When I’m sexy confident, I always want to wear red pumps. The more disheveled they got, the more I loved them. My mom said, ‘Zoe, honestly, you can wear boots that are worn, but red heels? It just looks wrong.’ But I haven’t thrown them away yet. As long as I’m not out with my mom, I will wear them!” She also tells the magazine, ““You should never feel as if you’re hiding. My stylist [chooses clothes that] complement my personality, my character.” Here’s more:

Don’t be confused by Zoë Saldana’s glamorous red carpet looks–in real life, the star of Avatar and Star Trek isn’t exactly a girly-girl: “I’ve never really been that feminine,” she says in the May issue of SELF.

“Look in my closet and you’ll see things that are elegant, sexy, tomboyish, sophisticated, beautiful, aggressive. It’s harsh. It’s a lot of black. Pretty is the last word you would think of.”

The 31-year-old cover girl has held her personal fashion preferences since her childhood growing up in the Dominican Republic.

“The Caribbean is the most floral-happy culture in the world, and my sisters and I were like three little Jackie O’s with big sunglasses, reading all these sophisticated magazines and dressed in black at all times,” she says.

But that’s not to say the actress doesn’t occasionally enjoy playing dress-up.

“These florals [I’m wearing] tell a story… I was channeling that South Beach-looking-for-a-millionaire-husband-from-Switzerland kind of thing. I live in constant storytelling mode,” she says of a hot-pink strapless confection she wore during the shoot.

“Sometimes, I have to give myself permission to be pretty.” To hear more from Saldana, pick up the May issue of SELF or go to self.com.

I totally know what she means when she says “Sometimes, I have to give myself permission to be pretty.” She’s saying that she’s afraid to be too girly, too feminine, too over the top, and she has to remind herself that fashion can be fun. But I’m still giggling over that line. My immediate response was “I have to give myself permission to wear sweatpants.” Or, “I have to give myself permission to go for a chocolate run when I’m PMSing and wearing my pajamas.” We can’t all be so fancy!

By the way, does anyone else think she’s got a mini-Jada Pinkett-Smith vibe going on?

  2. ogechi says:

    Lovely looks.

  3. Ali says:

So pretty. However, last night she was on a talk show and the first thing my boyfriend said is, “can someone get that girl a sandwich?”

  4. Sudini says:

    She’s stunning.

  5. canadianchick says:

She’s lovely. So Rachel Zoe is responsible for that purple dress monstrosity?

  6. Jag says:

Yes, she does have that vibe.

I wish that instead of the purple lower half of that gown, they had made an entire gown of the material on the top half. That would’ve been gorgeous.

  7. Sumodo1 says:

That imp Rachel Zoe! She knew she was sabotaging Zoe Saldana by putting her in that purple chenille bedspread for the Oscars. Rachel Zoe is cracked out.

  8. Anna says:

She’s so pretty and she obviously had a sense of style before she got famous. I just don’t understand why these stars need/want stylists at all. If I had all that money, I would enjoy spending some of it on my dream clothes and I definitely wouldn’t want anyone else to determine my look. The great thing about that kind of money is that you can buy pretty much anything that will truly be to your liking, so why let someone else pick your clothes? Colour me majorly confused.

See, if I had that money I’d definitely hire a stylist and someone to do my make up!

Why? I love to wear great looking clothes, but I hate shopping for them. And, make up is not my specialty nor one of my interests. I’d definitely get a make up artist if I could!

Everyone’s different. I’d rather use the time saved turn my attention toward other pursuits..

I love Zoë! And I loved her in the purple Oscar dress. She should have been on the Vanity Fair cover for sure. I will watch almost anything she does, except for those sci fi movies, they just aren’t my thing. I too would hire a stylist and makeup artist. Not to determine my look but to help me find all those fabulous clothes out there!

  11. gaby says:

This girl is so scary thin that I’m sure the people at Self magazine avoided putting her in just a swimsuit for the cover. That’s usually what most of the people on the cover wear but here they made her wear a cover-up on top of the swimsuit probably because of her tiny body. Maybe she is that naturally skinny but it looks unhealthy for a magazine that is about promoting health

  12. Just a Poster says:

I get what she is saying about giving herself permission to be pretty.

But I am on the other end of the spectrum, I am a busy Mom of 3 hooligan kiddos and well sometimes I get stuck in the jeans and tees look.

I am a girl damn it! I am allowed to be a knock out!

  13. t says:

I liked her in that purple dress too. It was unusual, but she was able to pull it off…really beautiful!

  14. snapdragon says:

    i love her leopard purse.

  15. Anna says:

@Iggles – I guess I see your point 🙂 Still, I’d find it weird to have someone else dress me and I love doing my own makeup, so yah. But I do get it more now, Iggles.

  16. Kaye says:

I just want to say that I loved her purple Oscar’s dress. People were mostly so negative about it, but I thought it was great on her.

  17. Cheyenne says:

She hardly needed permission. She is very beautiful.

Agree with Jag. The top half of that purple Oscar dress was gorgeous. The bottom half was a disaster.

  18. Other Laura says:

Gah, brown skin is so beautiful…

  19. Leigh says:

Newsflash, when your vajayjay sags, your hair falls out of your head and your boobs droop, your teeth fall out and you have hypotension, etc THAT is Anorexia. She is just naturally thin!!

  20. LUCI LIU says:

GET OVER YOURSELF ZOE. IT WON’T BE LONG BEFORE YOUR REIGN IS OVER. REMEMBER THAT.

  21. LUCI LIU says:

YOU HAVE TO GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION TO BE PRETTY. BIOTCH PLEASE! YOU’RE JUST ANOTHER AVERAGE-LOOKING LATINA/BLACK GIRL WHO HAPPENS TO BE THE FLAVOR OF THE MONTH CHOCOLATE GIRL RIGHT NOW. YEAH, I KNOW, YOU AND LALA ARE NOT BLACK. GO RUN THAT BULLSH!T BY JLO, OR EVA MENDES, OR ANY OTHER LATINA WITH LIGHTER SKIN AND STRAIGHTER HAIR THAN YOURS! LMBAO!
